Movies you watched for one actor, and their co-star stole the show

Posted by CeruleanBlew

This may seem like a strange example given the cast in question, but my main reason for wanting to see Seven Psychopaths (2012) was Sam Rockwell. Fast-forward to watching it, and the best part of the movie for me ended up being Christopher Walken. They all did a fantastic job (Colin Farrell was brilliant as well), but Walken just killed it, IMO. Any similar experiences where your favorite performance came from someone you weren’t expecting?

This is what happened with "The Godfather". It was somewhat marketed as a Brando movie, and the relatively unknown Pacino just jumped out of the screen.

Aromatic-Speed5090 Mar 29, 2026 +31
I am old enough to remember this. There was so much press about the movie before it came out, all focused on Brando.
31
ihaveadarkedge Mar 29, 2026 +18
From stuff I've seen and things I've read, Pacino was pretty disliked by executives of paramount during filming as they didn't like his performance. He clearly changed their minds at some point.

They hated him going in - Robert Evans called him dwarf and midget …😡 As Al has said, the first scene they filmed - Connie’s wedding- did him no favors. As he was portraying Michael, at the beginning he was quiet, lacking charisma…he wanted to gradually show Michael growing into who he became. Paramount was unimpressed and wanted him gone  Francis moves up the filming of the restaurant assassination scene, and that convinced Paramount to keep Al

He was unproven as a big role at that time. Going up against Brando and James Caan was something else!

Apparently that point was the scene in the restaurant where they sold the best veal in the city.

Remaining in “gangsta theme”, I’m pretty sure a lot of people watched Goodfellas for Deniro and Ray Lotta blew everybody away.

The Birdcage for Robin Williams. But Hank Azaria steals every scene he’s in.

Wouldnt necessarily say I watched Mission Impossible Rogue Nation just for Tom Cruise but he was definitely the franchise. But I came out of that movie thinking about Rebecca Ferguson. I was like "who is she?!" Such a breakout role.

I’ll watch anything Rebecca Ferguson is in, even Peaky Blinders The Immortal Man 😭

I was so pissed when they killed her character
11
trylobyte Mar 30, 2026 +8
Same. I thought it was gonna be a fakeout and she triumphantly return in Part 2 (Final Reckoning). But nop. I love how by Fallout, we got a solid team with Ilsa as the female co-lead.
8
doctoranonrus Mar 30, 2026 +1
And then they killed off Luther too. I kinda want to pretend they ended with Fallout.

No kidding, I guess they can't pair Cruise with anyone over 30.

“What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” This came up last week; I went to see it because of Johnny Depp. But, it was this young kid, playing a disabled person, who stole the show. Some kid named Leonardo DiCaprio or something like that…

The Last Samurai lead is Tom Cruise. Ken Watanabe steals every scene he's in.
53

He's the superior actor. That's not a dis on Cruise in that movie but Watanabe is just especially good.

Leo was fun but Sean Penn was just amazing
9

I thought Sean Penn was great, actually the whole cast was great, but I just thought Leo was stellar. His scene with the passwords was brilliant.

Watch the trailer for The Hangover. Ed Helms and Bradley Cooper have all the lines and are in almost every shot, most of the time together. Yet Zach Galifianakis is easily the reason to rewatch that movie. He blew up after it and was in everything. https://youtu.be/TZc39afdeXU?si=tpVLnKvShgFDzufg

Yep. Good one. I had no idea who he was, but he stole the show. To a lesser degree, Ken Jeong made a name for himself, too.

Went into Spider-Man: No Way Home psyched out of my mind for Tobey Maguire. Came out wanting more Andrew Garfield.
35
Professional-Owl415 Mar 29, 2026 +90
I was born the year it came out but I imagine Tombstone was similar to this with Kurt Russell being the front man as Wyatt Earp, and then Val Kilmer gives one of the greatest performances ever.

SpiffySpacemanSpiff Mar 29, 2026 +14
You ain’t no daisy!
14
joeypublica Mar 30, 2026 +6
I remember being very excited for Tombstone, because it had three of my favorite actors at the time in Russel, Biehn, and Kilmer. First scene with Kilmer I had to laugh, his accent was just.. strange. After a couple scenes though I totally bought into it and by the end of the end of the movie I had one favorite actor. Tombstone was full of great performances, but Val stole the show.

The best character in GO was the drug dealer (medium part). The best character in The Girl Next Door was the P*** Producer (medium part). The best part of Alien:Earth is the Synthetic Human Philosopher (Big Cast, Medium part). Timothy Olyphant is the guy behind all 3 roles, but the first 2 movies were at the beginning of his career. He just Owns the Camera when he is on screen. Justified is one of the best shows ever, because Walter Goggins as the villain WOULD Have stolen the show, if not for TO matching him as the Hero.
53

Goggins and Olyphant sharing a screen is always amazing. They’re absolute scene stealers by themselves so seeing them in a show together is a brilliant example of stage charisma.
9
on-a-pedestal Mar 29, 2026 +10
Little Justified trivia note. IIRC: >The final contract they got after season 4 covered 5, 6 and 7 to finish the series (TO, WG, Writers, etc), but after season 5 the 2 leads and showrunner had a chat and decided an extra season would be filler. They were ready to bring the story home in S6 and end it, and that last season was 👨🏻‍🍳💋. >They all took a voluntary pay cut of a season to "end the story the right way" and that is some professional class act stuff.
10
Polite_Suggestion Mar 29, 2026 +55
Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men is probably the greatest breakout ever, up against no less than Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin.
55
qwrrty Mar 30, 2026 +7
I wouldn’t call it a breakout role. Bardem had already had prominent roles in films by Pedro Almodóvar (one of Spain’s most internationally successful directors) and had been nominated for the Best Actor Oscar in 2000. No Country For Old Men did cement his status as an A-lister though.

Don’t forget Woody. Woody is almost never not-great.  A stellar actor, and always a joy to watch.

Val Kilmer in Tombstone. He will always be the best example of this in my book.

Benicio del Toro being the main acting highlight in One battle after another was a big surprise. Even in a movie so packed with great acting, what he does is spectacular.

tkingsbu Mar 29, 2026 +12
Easily the best part in the movie, next to the daughter… What was funny to me was all the time and energy spent on the revolutionaries, while Benicios character is quietly and methodically doing and succeeding at what they were kinda failing at…
12
dumbBunny9 Mar 29, 2026 +16
Yeah, I was surprised Sean Penn won the Oscar over him. Benicio was the best part of the movie for me.
16
GaracaiusCanadensis Mar 29, 2026 +3
He was great in my first exposure to him: Way of the Gun with Ryan Philippe.
3
schmearcampain Mar 30, 2026 +1
He also made a huge impression with very limited screen time in The Usual Suspects.
1
Acrylonitrile-28 Mar 29, 2026 +9
Not really an example where costar outshined the lead, but for me it's The king of comedy. De Niro's best ever performance imo, considering that Jerry Lewis was certainly able to hold his own and deliver a memorable performance.
9
joe12321 Mar 29, 2026 +12
Elia Kazan's **On the Waterfront** is known for (among other things) Marlon Brando's acting, but Rod Steiger knocks it out of the park! Actually very similarly Toshiro Mifune gets all the love for his flashy role in Kurosawa's **Seven Samurai,** but Takashi Shimura holds it down just as much as his character does in the movie.
12
CeruleanBlew Mar 29, 2026 +2
I still haven’t seen Seven Samurai, 🫣 but really liked On the Waterfront when I saw it. Will definitely have to watch/rewatch both!

I watched that one from hearing about Jolie's performance and thought Murphy stole the show. What would be yours?
6
Crazy-Inspection5622 Mar 29, 2026 +10
i thought the hype of jolie's performance was warranted, but murphy was right up there. was just interesting at the time that it was suppose to be a huge leap for ryder's career, but faded a bit after that and the shoplifting
10
scruffigan Mar 29, 2026 +8
I just watched this again and while the whole cast is really solid, I do have to say Ryder's onscreen fragility and disconnection was such a necessary part of the movie working.
8
NotUrbanMilkmaid Mar 29, 2026 +9
I watched Legends of the Fall for Brad Pitt, but I noticed how perfect and 'in the pocket' Aidan Quinn delivered every line and became a fan. He is under-utilized as an actor.

The Blue Angel. Audiences came for Emil Jannings, but it turned into the starmaking vehicle for Marlene Dietrich.
8
maeldwyn Mar 29, 2026 +14
I watched Excorcist III basically for George C. Scott, who was great, but Brad Dourif absolutely ran away with that movie.
14
TheCarrier89 Mar 29, 2026 +9
That’s typically the case for any movie Dourif is in. I genuinely believe he is one of the best actors of our generation but doesn’t really get that recognition because he’s been in a lot of trash. If the dude was more picky about the roles he took he would be considered one of the greats alongside De niro, Nicholson etc.

The new Frankenstein. Went in for Oscar Isaac and was blown away by Jacob Elordi.

WookProblems Mar 29, 2026 +17
Controversial take. Please dont come for me. When Get Him to the Greek came out, the sell was Jonah Hill and Russell Brand. But Diddy's minor character stole the show for me. Looking back, its probably bc he wasnt acting and now im grossed tf out, but at the time...I thought Sergio was the best part of the movie.

Blade runner 2049 for Harrison Ford, whole cast overshadowed by Dave Bautista, I still can't process how it happened. Movie peaked in the first scene
19
santaslittleyelper Mar 29, 2026
We were so hyped for that film. Then we get that opening! And then the rest of the film just is not nearly as interesting. I mean it was fine. But did not capture a lot of what made the original good.

Mandalore108 Mar 29, 2026 +3
Disagreed on the second part, it was much better than the first film.
3
Dottsterisk Mar 29, 2026 -2
That is a HOT take. I remember thinking Bautista’s delivery was wooden and unconvincing, especially the “you’ve never seen a miracle” line. I was very relieved when the rest of the film had much better acting.
-2
Mandalore108 Mar 29, 2026 +5
Not hot at all, it's the common opinion that his small role was great.
5
Dottsterisk Mar 29, 2026 -2
It’s common opinion that Bautista overshadowed Gosling? Wright? I see his performance get praised a lot on listnook but don’t hear much about it elsewhere, even when 2049 comes up. Even Leto gives a more compelling performance IMO. (Yes, I know Leto is likely a sex pest. That doesn’t mean he’s a bad performer. See: Kevin Spacey.)
-2
poorloko Mar 29, 2026 +1
I've heard lots of praise for his performance. I'm sure it's not a universal opinion but it is a common one.

Dottsterisk Mar 29, 2026 +3
A lot of people on listnook praise the performance but I haven’t seen people saying it was so good that it overshadowed Gosling’s performance.
3

Seven Psychopaths has a pair of random characters who were killed on the bridge/dam and they're actually two of the most important characters in Boardwalk Empire. My headcanon is that the two were in town for a convention or appearance and got pulled into the movie by the director or producer because they had worked together. I watch anything with Ben Foster in it because he was the stand-out in 3:10 to Yuma with Christian Bale and Russell Crowe.
3

Well, I can’t remember why exactly I went to see the aviator, but presumably it’s because of Scorsese and DiCaprio. But once Cate Blanchett is in the screen you can’t take your eyes off of her. She was amazing.  Looking back at her filmography I must have seen her in a role before, but I had never noticed her. She had done a comedy with Bruce Willis and (I think) Billy Bob T in 2000 that I had seen.

I think everyone now knows whose performance stole the show. Blew my mind once I put it together while watching the movie. “Wait……is that ‘Data???’ No….it can’t be!” It WAS. Other than that, the scenes with Geraldine Page in Pope Of Greenwich Village comes to mind.
