Murder Mystery Thriller

Posted by Yash00875

Suggest me an awesome murder mystery thriller. it could be of any country. Just it needs to be worth it to watch. I am more attracted towards the mystery to solve the who is the murderer or the guilty. A flash detective or police chasing around a mind bending killer. If it's a philosophical killer i like that too. As in seven movie. if so please suggest...

Two of the very best imo are the Korean flick Memories of Murder by Bong Joon Ho and the Japanese film Cure by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Both are truly excellent!

Memories of Murder is one of the best movies I have ever seen.

*Tell No One* (2006) It's French, and one of the most satisfying murder-mysteries of the past 30 years, filled with emotion and feeling and the best foot chase since *Point Break*.

Loved it.

I’m a fan of the Peter Ustinov Poriot movies. Death on the Nile (1978,) Evil Under the Sun (1982,) Appointment with Death (1988). All a good whodunnit’s you can try and guess along with.

Evil Under the Sun is still the best Agatha Christie movie imo. I love that one

Murder on the Orient Express?

Also excellent, it’s just not one of the Ustinov Poirot’s. Most people would say it’s the best one tho!

The Knives Out films are always a good time. If you like mystery, you’ll probably like Primal Fear (1996). I would give more of a description but I think it’s best to go in blind.

Knives Out is so phenomenal, the second and third fell off (IMO) but I can watch the first one whenever.

3 is so much better than 2 any day of the week though.

Dependent-Laugh-3792 Apr 2, 2026 +2
It’s based off the first book of a trilogy!

One of the movie adaptations of the novel Red Dragon. I prefer the one called Manhunter with William Petersen from the early 1980's. But Ed Norton made a version in the early 2000's (I believe). The way the FBI agent figures out who the killer is is pretty cool. Good detective work.

"Clue" from 1985 is a parody of the murder mystery/whodunit genre, but it's a lot of fun, with a fantastic cast. I revisited it recently after reading Tim Curry's autobiography, *Vagabond*, in which he said "Clue" was his favorite of all the films he's done.

Subject_Customer3254 Apr 2, 2026 +2
There's no mystery whatsoever in this. Great thriller though.
2
Fall-Patient Apr 3, 2026
I saw the Devil - the mystery is watching the cops trying to find him and discovering clues along the way

You specified Mystery so I'm still going to suggest them because they are but the mystery in those is "How does the bad guy get away with it.": Columbo.

Se7en wasn't a mystery, it was a procedural. Death on the Nile is a mystery.
4
Flat_Fox_7318 Apr 2, 2026 +5
Ehh. Finding out who the killer is as well as realizing his motivations are a big part of the story, so it certainly has mystery elements.
5
No-Koala1918 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Of course, almost all procedurals have mystery elements. Dirty Harry has mystery elements. And all mysteries, have procedural elements. But the primary characteristic of a mystery is a group of likely suspects. A procedural may have puzzling methods or motivations, but the murderer, as in Se7en, as in Dirty Harry (a more classical procedural construction), is a random individual with individual motivations, not one of a group of potential suspects all with potential motivations, like in Murder on the Orient Express. To be clear, I'm not saying one makes a better movie than the other, just that they are different. Try writing the same story both as a mystery and as a procedural and that becomes clear really quickly.

Death of the nile was boring though
1
No-Koala1918 Apr 2, 2026 -1
The latest version was. The movie made for tv was much tighter. Unless you really don't want to watch a mystery.

Well excuse me for pointing out obvious differences between two often conflated genres.

jawshankredemption94 Apr 2, 2026 -1
They just want movie recommendations, it’s not that deep
-1
No-Koala1918 Apr 2, 2026 +1
But do they want mystery movie recommendations? And how is discussing that a call for snark? It's really not interesting telling me you're not interested, though I guess you think it's clever.
1
jawshankredemption94 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Not everyone is out here trying to be clever. Hence my initial comment lol

Dept. Q on Netflix. It’s pretty dark though. The Devil’s Hour, on Prime. Also very dark. They’re both British.

Okay will definitely give it a watch

The most recent mini series of Agatha Christie’s “And then there were none” from 2015 shown on BBC One. It was very good and highly reccomesdd.

check out "Gone Girl" if you haven't seen it yet; it's got that mind-bending vibe and some wild twists. also, "Zodiac" is a classic that dives deep into the hunt for the killer with a philosophical angle.

WritingUnicorn2019 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Both good recommendations!

I had a similar itch recently. The Invisible Guest scratched it for me. It's a good one that most probably haven't seen.

No Way Out (1987). Kevin Costner, Gene Hackman - if you haven't seen it, don't Google it, just enjoy it!

Unusual suspects, surely

I recently watched Jack’s Back and was pleasantly surprised by the bold swings the film takes. It’s not A+ or anything but it’s unique and enjoyable a watch.

People have suggested Knives Out - love them all. Great ensemble casts. In that same vein is Gosford Park and Only Murders in the Building. but I realize now that those are more in the "black comedy" type of film categories. Thriller AKA darker films? Silence of the Lambs is pretty dark and may fit what you are looking for!

A lot of Giallos I think fit that mold. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Deep Red come to mind.

Secreto en Los ojos is Argentina movie about death and life and mystery and politics. Kind of fits your description but it's very good foreign movie. Got remade but not as good.
