Now if he could only stop being a military dictator that usurped a highly popular democratically elected government, that would be nice. Honestly, apart from the whole Rohingaya situation and Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar flies disproportionately under the radar given the shit that goes on.

Its because the coup was during covid and everyone was too busy for that. Now its 5 years later and nobody cares

The whole thing is pure political theatre. The dictator is reinventing himself as a democratically elected president following sham elections. Prisoner releases like this serve only to free up prison space for more prisoners. Many of the released are immediately re-arrested. Given the extrajudicial killings that go on around the country, banning the death penalty means nothing except to allow them to trumpet to the world how civilised they've become.

Is he the result of the coup that unfolded behind that young TikTokker?

Not sure she was a tiktoker, but I remember the footage of a lady either doing yoga or aerboics when the coup began in the background

Yes, it has been going on since 2021 and its been a brutal series of nonstop warcrimes from the junta but no one in the west gives a shit when its brown vs brown

People give a shit. Unfortunately there's just not much people in the west can do unless they find out that this too is some CIA shit. At least with Palestine, Iran, Sudan and Congo, external influence and funding is obvious.

I care about Myanmar but I don't go around making a big deal about it because there's nothing I can do. It feels like shit, but if you saw me on the bus on my phone you'd probably think there's another guy who doesn't give a shit because it's brown vs brown.

Yes there is. Help support the schools of the refugees in Mae Sot on the border with Thailand. There are 64 schools that are severely underfunded. Your concern is worth shit.

Nice joke. Self appointed President scrap all death sentences but regularly bomb villages and kill off rebels like it's breakfast.

Reality is, in our current flawed systems of governance, positions of power attract greedy/evil people. The real solution is to root out evil from society for evil will find a way to power. This can be accomplished through education. Until humanity achieves a higher level of collective education, we will continue to be in turmoil.

***The Telegraph reports:*** Myanmar’s president has commuted all death sentences in a blanket order in one of his first official acts since being elected. Min Aung Hlaing led a military junta which seized power in the country in February 2021 and promised to hold elections and return to civilian rule within a year. But he was only sworn into office last week following an election that critics say was neither free nor fair, and was orchestrated to maintain the military’s tight control of the country. Mr Aung Hlaing said his government would implement amnesties that would contribute to social reconciliation, justice and peace and support the country’s overall development. A communiqué on behalf of the president said “those serving death sentences shall have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment”. In addition, more than 4,500 prisoners have been granted amnesty and others have had their sentences reduced under a pardon order to mark the traditional new year. **Full story:** [**https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/04/17/myanmar-scraps-all-death-sentences/?WT.mc\_id=tmgoff\_listnook\_news/2026/04/17/myanmar-scraps-all-death-sentences/&accesscontrol=facebookchannel\_open**](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/04/17/myanmar-scraps-all-death-sentences/?WT.mc_id=tmgoff_listnook_news/2026/04/17/myanmar-scraps-all-death-sentences/&accesscontrol=facebookchannel_open)

It's an objectively good thing, no matter what you think of the place and/or man.

If it meant anything, maybe. Given that the country just shoots anyone it feels like without trials/courts at all, that the few people who actually get brought through the courts no longer get death sentences doesn't mean a lot.

If only the junta would scrap all the extrajudicial killings and bombing of civilians while they're at it

Which Myanmar? There are about 5 different factions controlling various parts of the country.

Just wondered if this was posted via telegraph, then I looked up when the name change occured. 1989 is surprisingly recent. Fair enough. About the same time frame as the germans still referring to the "new" parts of the country.
