Okay so I know I am very late and just finished watching this, couldn't stop crying having similar experiences.
Can't stop but think, was Brian's dad also into kids in some sort of way? Where was he that night when It happened. I can't find anything about him or if it was just coincidence or something else. Brian confronts him and he just says that he can't help him.
Someone has any thoughts on this or is it just meant for the father to not play such a big role (although I think he does)
