I mean, the next 20 to 30 years are already planned, but it’s great that everything is on track due to Artemis II’s success.

Saying things are on track is a pretty optimistic view point. The next mission is supposed to be a year from now testing the Orion space capsule with a lunar lander but no lunar lander is functional yet. My understanding is that it was originally just supposed to be SpaceX as the lunar lander but since they are behind schedule NASA has opened up the opportunity again to alternatives but that doesn’t mean any alternatives are ready.

You forgot about cutting the NASA budget by 5.6 Billion... after saying we are going to settle the moon, then cut funding for said missions. Sounds like headline-gathering Trump plans. Not intelligence, headline-grabbing.

We are probably quite a few years away from being able to develop a functional lunar lander. The tech 50 years ago was so much better in specifically just Lunar Landers and Lunar ATVs.

Pndrizzy Apr 13, 2026 +3
How’s that possible that the tech before was better?

My best guess would be lack of institutional knowledge, among other issues. All the people who designed and built the original Apollo LMs in the 60s/70s have since died or retired, so it's not as simple as just spinning up a factory again and making some more. Plus, our tolerances of crew safety are higher now than during the space race, so we would likely need to retrofit the whole thing anyways just to get it up to par

Just gotta get the exit valve on the shitter working...

I don't understand why they couldn't just pee and poop into space. We've all had to go to the bathroom somewhere we didn't want to

I mean the current admin is trying to cut NASA's budget so things could very easily get off track

If it goes like during Trump’s first term, Congress with rewrite the bill and pass the budget either way. What’s funny is that this amendment is what funded Artemis II.

The moon landing is going to be wild. I hope we can stop killing each other and do more of this to progress humanity.

Marcysdad Apr 13, 2026 +26
Their biggest challenge will be the cuts of over 7 billion dollars Trump made out of their budget

Broue Apr 13, 2026 +4
The bigger point is that the White House throws out big NASA cuts, then Congress rewrites them anyway, just like it did during Trump’s first term with Artemis II. Artemis III was already funded during Biden, and the supposed cuts mostly affect Artemis IV and V, but there is a good chance Congress pushes the full budget through like last time.

How is he going to do that next year if he doesn't control Congress?

Send Musk, Bezos, Zuck and Cook to Mars? 🙏

This is what gets the youth excited about STEM. The problem is Isaacman is viewed with mixed feelings with his close ties to Elon and clear financial conflict of interest. We need to get back to the moon, and then get to Mars. These are things we can do and the inventions we create going to Mars will continue to propel us forward.

GeekFurious Apr 13, 2026 +2
Considering anyone else Trump could have put in that position, the space community is pretty relieved it was Isaacman.

Next is cutting NASA out of the picture and giving all space exploration contracts to SpaceX

Trump wants to cut NASA funding next year.
3
GeekFurious Apr 13, 2026 +2
He's going to have an interesting time trying that if Democrats take the House in November. And an even worse time at it if they somehow take the Senate too.
2
call-lee-free Apr 13, 2026 +1
Since Trump likes to break laws and not follow the constitution, he will likely come up with some BS to do away with the midterms to keep the Republicans in power.
1
GeekFurious Apr 13, 2026 +1
Stop elevating this moron's baby babble bullshit to king status. He can try whatever he likes, but he keeps losing in court when he tries to do things he has NO LEGAL AUTHORITY to deliver.
1
call-lee-free Apr 13, 2026 +1
Not elevating. Just being real here considering all the bullshit he's done since last January. Anytime someone says he can't, he ends up doing it anyways and I wouldn't put too much stock in the courts since they've allowed a lot of this c*** to happen 🤷‍♂️

Love that NASA’s response to “we went around the Moon with people again” is basically “ok, what’s next.” Maybe toss a fraction of that ambition toward climate satellites and asteroid defense while we’re at it.

GeekFurious Apr 13, 2026 +2
NASA is going to deliver what Congress tells it to deliver.

How about the doing something challenge? Artemis I empty around moon. Artemis II people sitting in capsule going around the moon. How about DOING SOMETHING like actually landing on the moon? Two USELESS test missions instead of just getting to the point.

americans are super sensitive about death thats why

Except when it's on TV, in their schools, on their streets, or when their bombs land on yet another school full of kids.

The Artemis program is extremely aggressive. It took apollo 12 missions before they actually attempted to land on the moon, because they needed to test different parts of the mission at each step along the way. Artemis 2 is roughly analogous to Apollo 8 (a very broad comparison but accurate enough for purposes of this discussion). For the next mission the plan is to get the lunar lander (which they haven't selected yet) into orbit, fuel it up in space, connect it with the Orion spacecraft and flying that all around the moon. so that's multiple huge portions of the mission that they're trying to complete all in one mission. If they actually pull that off it will be a mind-bogglingly impressive feat. There are valid criticisms of the Artemis program, but this is not one of them.

sonofeevil Apr 13, 2026 +1
They're testing this experimental prototype what do you want from them? The space shuttle was retired so they've had to make a whole new system and because of the issues with the shuttle program they've gone back to a capsule style system that we used during the Apollo program. They've got to relearn this stuff over again and create an entirely new machine. That machine requires tests, the first was unmanned the second was manned. How can you possibly be upset that they aren't doing more? These things take time, if you're upset and live the USA, maybe write a letter to your local politician and request they increase funding and support for NASA?

premature_eulogy Apr 13, 2026 +1
Imagine it's 1969 and you're saying this about ten USELESS Apollo missions.
1
Frrrenchtoast Apr 13, 2026 +1
What a silly comment. Imagine someone you care about aboard those missions and NASA not doing everything in its power to assure success. Additionally, this country is too fragile right now to have another space tragedy. Something like Columbia would likely lead to them scrapping Artemis programs all together.

You sound like a lot of fun at get togethers...humans just traveled the furthest they ever have and thats useless? Seems pretty cool to like 99.9% of the population. I don't think I've ever seen anyone this excited about NASA and Space in a long time.
