This is a lot of good advice, and he’d probably have gotten advice like this if he hired qualified advisors rather than people who can kiss his ass the most, but let’s be honest, he cares much more about the ass kissing.

“Defensive pact not applicable to random acts of unprovoked violence. Conservatives shocked. Tariffing themselves also not the key to ushering in a golden age of prosperity… something that every other leader on the planet and anyone who even half paid attention in basic economics was already extremely aware of. Conservatives EQUALLY shocked.”

Trump is not dumb, he is just evil. He wants to undermine NATO. All of the above was carefully orchestrated, so NATO allies move away from USA and in turn, Trump has arguments for reinforcing is cause against NATO membership. Convince me otherwise.
9
JeanClaude-Randamme 2 days ago +27
Nah, he is dumb AND evil.
27
desmonea 1 day ago +7
I think he is causing chaos on purpose. People handwave it as him just being dumb and laugh at him, but miss the more important issue - Trump is using every tweet as a way to manipulate markets, people, and to advance his own goals, which mostly involve lining his and his friend's pockets and securing his position of power. It's easy to dismiss him as being senile / crazy / dumb - and while all of the above may be partially true as well, his communication strategy is very deliberate, and to me it appears most people are blind to it.
7
JeanClaude-Randamme 1 day ago +5
Oh there is no doubt he is a corrupt piece of shit. He has a lot of experience in ripping people off, and he’s good at it. However none of his strategies are particularly clever, well thought out or long term. He can only think in the short term, and what is good for him, and how to bully people. He 100% didn’t plan for Iran to happen like this, he was dumb and thought he could just bully them int submission and it would be easy and consequence free like Venezuela. That backfired because it was dumb. So now he’s just doubling down on the only strategy he knows, to bully and threaten. It’s not working. But he does his bullying and then profits from it because of his market/insider trading experience. He’s still stupid though.
5
Witty_Formal7305 1 day ago +5
No Trump is definitely dumb, it's generally always been known he's actually a moron but he's a malignant narcissist so he surrounds himself with yes men so when he lies out his ass about shit he knows nothing about (which is basically every time he opens his mouth) he says it with the confidence of someone with a doctorate on the subject because he's literally incapable of feeling shame or regret & the people he surrounds himself with know that if they don't agree & spout whatever he says then they fall out of favour and get the boot. I think he's indifferent to NATO in its true form, what he actually wants is NATO to increase their spending and pump it all into American defence contractors and be his goon squad when he steps in shit. That's why he's extra pissed right now, he's bullied them into spending more but they're not buying as many U.S weapons which means billions of dollars not flowing to the U.S and those companies, who pour millions into lobbying every year to make sure that U.S govt policy does everything it can to use its global soft power to push other countries to buy American military hardware. Top that all off with the fact that his dementia is pretty advanced which means that he's losing his filter in his brain and is not only even more impulsive than he was before, but hes also making decisions based 99% on emotion, which with Trump is either happy or angry there's no in between with him, that's why his daily briefing on Iran is some clips of the U.S blowing shit up every day, his handlers are feeding him only the information that they've curated to keep him under control and stop him from totally flying off the handle.

A lot of NATO countries let the US use their bases for ***defensive*** operations. NATO is a defense treaty, after all. Did Trump even say 'thank you'?
2
HousingThrowAway1092 1 day ago +4
Also recognize that NATO is a defensive alliance. There is no reason whatsoever that NATO would ever have considered getting involved in Trump and Israel’s illegal war
4
Rinzwind 1 day ago +2
Yes but NATO often does help with a defensive stance if is does get a heads up. Like secure the borders. -or- stock up on oil and other stuff. That last one is what kills our economy and could be avoided. What I think ... Trumps knows he wont last long and informs his friends before an action so they can get or sell corresponding stock so they can make millions and millions. Same with Russia: it made more in oil sales that ever before. Russia also got a heads up.

The whole idea that NATO should be interested in "helping" shows a MASSIVE AND FUNDAMENTAL LACK OF UNDERSTANDING of just about everything about this mess. Trump doesnt understand NATO. Trump doesnt understand diplomacy. Trump doesnt understand Iran or the Middle East. Trump seems to have zero concept of grand strategy. He's just in it for the highlight reel and to stay out of prison, a couple weeks more.

AnalTinnitus 2 days ago +15
Trump's unwavering narcissism and arrogance assume that people will rally to him no matter how badly he has treated them. In fact, in his mind, he has not done them any wrong at all. This is why you will never hear him suggest ANY regret for his actions or words regarding others. Sadly, Trump has very infantile worldview that will never mature to anything beyond what we currently see.

Also, NATO is a DEFENCE-alliance, not an attack-alliance.
35
Too-Much-Plastic 2 days ago +2
It's also geographically limited, by the insistence of the USA at the time. So basically it's outside of NATO's operational scope and outside of its area of operations. Having said that, had there been some mutual respect and some form of a plan then a few nations may even have chipped in, Iran hasn't made many friends in Europe. But since America has been contemptible in its communication with its supposed allies and since this war was a profoundly stupid idea that America just yolo'd its way into before anyone could stop it no one, strangely, feels much like sticking their dicks in the hornet's nest on their behalf.
2
The_Krambambulist 2 days ago +4
But it's not uncommon for NATO countries to assist in certain operations. Why they would help you if you just do whatever you want and actually jeopardize safety, is a whole other question.
4
Local-Echo-5613 2 days ago +5
Some countries that are also NATO countries have cooperated with the US on military operations (along with non-NATO countries) but that has nothing to do with NATO. Afghanistan was the only time Article 5 was invoked and that was because the US had been attacked in the NATO area on 9/11.
5

Trump isn’t big on asking for consent, whether it be Iran, 13 year olds, or otherwise.
4
The_Frostweaver 2 days ago +222
Trump demanded europe accept one sided tariffs. Trump made a big deal of cutting Ukraine off financially and saying european countries in NATO needes to pull their weight and take care of their own backyard. Then he tries to bully NATO into giving him greenland. Then he starts a war with Iran without consulting NATO and is surprised when they don't want to help with his war. NATO is a defensive alliance, if you want allies to help with an aggressive war of choice you can't just invoke NATO after the fact. You need to treat your allies well and consult with them before you start the war if you want their help. And of course instead of engaging in any kind of introspection about the choices Trump has made which lead to both the conflict in Iran and caused allies not to be there for him he just lashes out and makes more threats. 3 more years of this is going to feel like 3 eternities.

32
Buff1965 2 days ago +12
It won't last 3 years. The Republicans have lost every off year election but two. Even in the two they won their margins were cut in half. Trump has the worst rating of any President going back to the 1970s. He is showing obvious signs of dementia and that can only get worse. One way or another he will be moved out of there.
12
Alcogel 2 days ago +40
You say that, but clearly he and his group are not planning to let go of power.  Jan 6 was what happened when Trump was told to transfer power to the new guy, when he was surrounded by a relatively normal administration that wanted to do things by the books.  This time he will have his team of loyalist sycophants who have fired everyone who might side with the constitution over MAGA, who will help him fight the transfer of power.  I hope the American people vote the republicans out in November, but I have no hope that what comes after that will be smooth or easy.

He seems to be doing what he can with what he has, much like Ukraine’s President had to change his tune after that blow out at the White House. Mind you, that comparison is a bit apples to oranges (pun?) due to the fact that Ukraine is life or death vs NATO needing the US. Rutte said as much some time ago. So he’s got to ride this out as best he can and keep the Alliance intact, because it’s looking more and more that widespread conflict is coming beyond what is already taking place. I do hope I’m wrong.

Being up his ass just means Trump views him as a disposible tool to toss around. Appeasing him does not work, he does not have the mental faculties or concentration to remember the last time you sucked up. Next time Trump will say/do something outrageous again and it will not be stopped. He will expect you to bend or make a silly nickname for you. Only clear signs of defiance, like Greenlandk, like chinese tarrifs will make him pause and try to squirm out of it.

Win a war and the whole world wins with you. Lose a war and you lose all on your own. Trump is pissed, he started an international war and expected NATO to bail him out. And because they didn't, he had to capitulate to all of Irans demands. And now Israel has screwed the pooch by continuing its attacks on Lebanon, which means he surrendered without telling his allies and will probably get pulled back into the war that he's already lost. Thr more he tries to explain how he actually won, the more weak and pathetic he seems. That might work with your MAGA base but the rest of the world knows that he tucked his tail between his legs and ran away the moment it got too hard for him. A weak and pathetic president.

NATO needs to play the long game. Who cares what Trump does with NATO, he would never honor it anyway. Maybe, just maybe there will be a time in future where it is rekindled and at least NATO hasn't been drawn into offensive wars by a Mad Pedo King. Think about it, if NATO had responded, they would be getting to the strait about now taking fire from Iran. Trump wasn't/isn't willing to put US forces in the strait, because he knows its a suicide mission. He just thought he could bully someone else into taking that fire.
9
Adavanter_MKI 2 days ago +3
Because you don't just throw around wars... simply because you *can.* The U.S is straight in the wrong on Iran and Venezuela. NATO never had any responsibility to join wars of choice. Seriously... this shouldn't have to be explained to anyone. It's just one giant evil f*** up by the current regime doing a bang up job of ruining the U.S. The only thing more painful than how blatantly stupid they are... is their supporters still somehow finding ways to pretend this is somehow a good thing. Like holyshit... this is grade school levels of governing. How lost are you people? Do soda cans present you with a challenge? FFS.

Does Trump and his administration even understand what NATO is, and how it works? The only time NATO's Article 5 has ever been invoked was for 9/11. Quite a number of nations assisted the US in Afghanistan. A lot of lives were lost. Did the US even say *thank you*?

Please remove this guy from his position as the Chief of NATO. He doesn't understand what NATO is for AND he's biased towards Trump.

What were we supposed to do? Invade Iran while we let the US plunder their oil reserves? And what then? Another round of riots in Europe? Defund Ukraine to spend money on a useless invasion while Israel conquers the middle east? What kind of mental gymnastics must we do to make ik make sense?

Wait so he’s upset the world didn’t explicitly kick off WWIII to cover up his pedophilia?

And we are 'clearly disappointed' by US starting this war, I guess it makes 2

Should have invoked article 5¾: Mutual assistance clause in case an ally attacks someone.

The biggest disappointment is of course the Orange Lunatic. If he had one more brain cell he’d be a plant.

Well allies are probably not that satisfied with trump either

I hope the NATO Chief explained that NATO is a defensive alliance, not an offensive alliance, and certainly not a personality cult.

If nato joined Iran then Putin would have an argument “ you’ve been saying NATO is defensive alliance when getting closer to our borders “
1
ghostbannomore 2 days ago +1
Ah so he must have formally asked them to get involved then.

Agitated-Zebra4334 2 days ago +1
Perhaps Rutte could clarify that NATO’s purpose is defence in the North Atlantic region (hense the name). Did he?

It's only been like half a year since Vance gave us shit for helping them in Afghanistan. Now you suddenly want help, without being attacked, without consulting us? We lost soldiers for you. Families were destroyed.

Allies typically join for defenses, not for offensives... Speaking of allies, it wasn't long since EU countries had to scramble fighters because it was seriously believed he might attack Greenland. His idea of an ally is a country to abuse when he sees fit.

Political leaders with experience in political leadership won’t agree to follow a billionaire playboy with Bo life experience into an international war. Cool.

US allies "clearly disappointed" by US refusal to help Europe defend itself against what NATO is made for.

Who backs a clear war of aggression by a serial pedophile psychopath who instigated trade wars for no reason against his own allies?

It’s pointless to counter his arguments with facts because he doesn’t care, nor does his following. They know why nato didn’t act, they are trying to justify leaving the alliance. It’s just theatrics.

US allies and NATO in this context are two different things. Trump has no comprehension of this.
1
scarab1001 1 day ago +1
All the other reasons people have listed from defensive to illegal war to war crimes and zero consultation before starting. Also, NATO is only for North Atlantic - a clause insisted upon by... America.

Big_Option_5575 1 day ago +1
But Trump also said he asked Nato for Greenland and he is upset they wouldn't give it to him.....   so too bad, so sad, piss off.

NATO is a \*defensive\* alliance and has nothing to do with an idiot starting a war for no reason. Sorry.

Why would a defensive alliance join a war of choice?
1
Objective-Clue5087 1 day ago +1
Trump starts a war out of nowhere to help Israel and Russia. Now, he wants to get a piece of the profit in charging countries for ships to pass through the straight. He expects NATO countries to be okay with this? It reminds me of being at a gathering and wondering when someone will finally tell the same unruly child who ruins every gathering - no more!
