Yes. He does. A large part of diplomacy is not alienating people. Trump is possibly the worst diplomat in modern history and is incredibly sensitive because of his narcissism. The bar for not alienating Trump is set so low that you have to sycophantically crawl under it. Rutte is an excellent limbo dancer. The only people Trump doesn’t require fawning sycophancy from are Putin, Netanyahu and Mamdani. Putin and Netanyahu because they are bigger and better bullies. But I have no idea why he is so enamoured if Mamdani. Possibly he sees him as some kind of route back into New York.

Fox News are not news and shouldn't be taken seriously. Said so themselves.

Probably one of the worst jobs I can imagine is being NATO Chief during a Trump administration Have to say anything to keep the alliance together or the world burns

One?

Dead_Internet69420 3 days ago +7
Absolutely. It’s a lie, and he knows that everybody else knows, but it’s the only thing that might convince Trump to stop saying and doing the stupid things that are wrecking the global economy. Trump needs to believe that people think he’s actually winning so he can escape the mess he made with his ego intact.

ObviouslyRealPerson 3 days ago +3
Rutte knows all he has to do to save the alliance is placate Trump's ego at every turn I do not envy him, that's a lot of ego to manage
3
accushot865 3 days ago +43
He’s just placating Trump. Everyone knows the best way to get Trump to do what you want is to butter him up, and plant a suggestion. Two weeks later, he’ll be spouting that suggestion off like he thought of it.

MentokGL 3 days ago +41
Placating and appeasing someone like him will never end well. Why don't we all know this lesson by now??

Nextasy 3 days ago +12
Appeasement? Never heard of it /s

It will end once the hamburbers catch up to him.

Did you want Rutte to say *"You've made a mess of this, now leave and think about your actions?"*
4
MentokGL 3 days ago +13
I want him to be honest and not lie and kiss ass.
13
fattygragas 2 days ago +1
I'd love that too. But sometimes you have to brown your nose to keep the shit going on your favor so I kind of understand.

Trump is going to pull us out of nato, pretending trump has valid concerns and playing along is pure folly. They could do everything he demands and more and it won't change the result. The goal is to isolate America so they can more easily extract wealth and fill those ice camps.

Have you ever asked why Zelensky has run along Trump too? He is in charge of the survival of millions of people and if running along some old demented man gives him an extra edge to protect them then so be it, it's the same with Rutte, with most adults in real life, you get a job and you take flak and sometimes it's all you can do, now both Rutte and Zelensky are dealing with the mistake millions of americans did, and they are doing it remarcably well all things considered.

“See? Rutte said I won, so I’m done. All of these problems everyone’s talking about were caused by someone else (probably Biden).”

anachronistic_circus 3 days ago +2
yeah we got a president with a 10 year old's temperament, what else was Rutte supposed to say? Trump does not have the power to leave NATO, but he can make things very difficult for the alliance.
2
Shoot_from_the_Quip 2 days ago +2
Just because he doesn't have the power to leave NATO doesn't mean there aren't many ways he could effectively do that anyway. Relocating troops, assets, etc and who knows what else. For now, placate the toddler to keep NATO intact and hope for the inevitable blood clot sooner than later.
2
anachronistic_circus 2 days ago +4
that's what I meant by *"...but he can make things very difficult for the alliance."*

He does have the nickname 'the Trump Whisperer'.
1
SidewaysFancyPrance 2 days ago +1
Nah, Trump will turn on him again in a heartbeat since Putin has put a hit out on NATO, so to speak. Trump won't get closer to NATO and become friends. He wants to rule NATO or see it destroyed by tearing it apart or coaxing it into offensive action outside of its charter, either one works for the big big guy.

_Litcube 3 days ago +6
His only job right now, is to keep NATO together. If that requires saiting the narcissist for a few years with a few (relatively) harmless words, then so be it.
6
Maeran 2 days ago +3
I don't think its years now. Rutte's comments yesterday about NATO members being "slow" to help with Iran misrepresent the alliance to a fatal degree. His words justify Trump's planned withdrawal from NATO.

If struggling to pay for gas and food is safe I shudder to think what is unsafe. People's lives across the globe are starting to suffer from this war and it will get worse if not back to normal soon. Increased poverty also increases crime and lowers peoples safety.

Ok, Rutte, you're solving the oil crisis then?
2
NoBSforGma 3 days ago +2
I don't blame him for trying to placate Trump with words that are essentially meaningless. The "meaningful" part was when he refused to get NATO involved, after all. He probably sent a quiet message to Iran that said, "Sorry, but you understand I had to say that." lol.

Just lip service they’ve all turned Trumpstein down for help with his distraction war crimes now they’re going to brainwash him by telling him what he wants to hear and still not helping him. Trumpstein is too dumb to understand what is happening. Imagine voting 🗳️ for this guy getting played by the world 🌎 and owned by Iran 🇮🇷

Can say alot about Rutte. But he isn't dumb. He is doing what he can to keep NATO from imploding. He sure as hell is not happy this is the way but he's a diplomat for 99.99% and a human being for 00,01% in this particular situation.

Will personally donate $5 billion USD to a charity of his choice if he can articulate exactly how that is true. He directly caused further attacks, violence, region instability, strait closures, economic turmoil, and regional animosity towards the US in return for absolutely no benefit or tangible return.

NATO is currently so dependent on US that they have to rub Trump's back to keep US in NATO fold until it can do without them or when US really do leave.
