It's a tactic that creates a "us vs. them" mentality. It hardens loyalty, makes people believe everything you say, and not believe anyone else. It unfortunately seems to work somewhat. 

Because type of people who believe in them are same. They are using same method to get and keep power. It worked 2000 years ago, it keep working today.

It's quite simple, imagine a moral person that has limited actions available to him.  Now imagine someone without morals that has unlimited actions available to him.  Who do you think wins?

That’s the most defining question in history right there. Because for the most part we’re dumb credulous creatures innately primed for voting for and following the big strong man who talks tough confidently and eloquently and offers simple solutions to every problem. That feels good and cozy to our brains, either because we don’t realize how complex things are or because we realize it’s above our comprehension but want to believe that the manichean promises and solutions that demagogues like him offer will work *this time*.

Because power corrupts. Money corrupts. And desire for a legacy without working for it corrupts.

It’s because the same kind of people use morally questionable but promising tactics to manipulate, gaslight and grab power.  While decent politicians don’t have a chance with explaining the real deal because very few people read more than a headline.

These are classic abuse tactics too. The same tactics that occur in interpersonal situations but writ large. Once a person leans the tactics abusers use, the pattern becomes clear one person or a group as large as a country, it’s the same.

Nothing says raising your own people’s morales like: - signing tens of thousands of them to irregular and endless reserve duty without proper compensation, watching their businesses and personal lives collapse - sneakily funneling hundreds of millions of dollars away from core education, medical and other assistive budgets over to a population that does not provide to the country at large in any way - opening more fronts to the war while the number of people who can actively serve keeps decreasing - signing laws that keep alienating the Arab population and enabling two tier policing - alienating the opposition parties with statements like “deep state” and turning the left into a negative connotation - refusing to rein in extremists on the right who keep stirring shit and committing actual literal illegal actions, for fears that it will collapse your government due to how fragile it is - moving away from western, secular quality of life benefits just to appease the religious parties in hopes that, again, their complaints won’t collapse your government - refusing to speak to media for weeks after opening new fronts in fears that opposition might be heard too early

I agree, but it would require more than just the liberalization of the country. It would require the decision to eschew a core component of Zionism, that the ultimate goal should be the biblical Israel, or at least pre-WW1 Palestine + Transjordan, and, relatedly, that any interim achievement should be used a stepping stone to that eventual goal.
