I've heard of so many countries subsidizing the cost of gas, either through tax cuts or direct subsidies
Bringing prices down will only lead to worse issues. It's a simply supply and demand problem. Supply is reduced, so demand has to follow suit. That only happens with higher prices or shortages

> I've heard of so many countries subsidizing the cost of gas, either through tax cuts or direct subsidies
That shows you who really controls the world: the fossil fuel industry.
Imagine subsidizing a dying technology instead of subsidizing renewable energy which is increasingly cheaper and lets you stop being dependent on rogue states like Iran.
37
TurelSun1 day ago
+19
If there is a silver lining to all this it is that at least some countries will likely start kicking the transition to renewables and other associated technologies into higher gear after this. Obviously the US likely won't be among them, but plenty of others will see that this is just the start of energy related disruptions that are to come.
19
Shamino791 day ago
+2
Why do you say obviously not the US? Texas is going nuts with renewables. Seems to me that they know what the future is, they are just trying to cash in on their reserves and limit competitors before demand eases.
2
Stonp1 day ago
+2
We do subsidise renewables. In Australia fossil fuels are subsidised $16b per year and renewables by $10b.
Of that $16b though, $10b is the FTCS (fuel tax credit scheme) which refunds on fuel not being used on public roads, like machinery that’s being used for well digging. So fossil fuels is less of a tax burden than renewables

They've reoccupied the area of southern Lebanon that they agreed to leave in 2006 in exchange for Hezbollah's disarmament, which ultimately never happened.
The whole area south of the Litani river has been a UN buffer zone ever since, established by UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
When you read through the terms of that agreement, it's not particularly surprising that Israel has responded to Hezbollah attacks by reoccupying the area.

Lebanon was asking for peace talks as soon as it became clear Hezbollah had decided to enter the war.
There was a moment when it seemed they had the willingness to disarm Hezbollah.
Lebanon expelled the Iranian ambassador and IRGC officials, but he declined the expuksuins and just stayed. The IRGC also.
Lebanon also officially outlawed Hezbollah's military wing... and for a minute it seemed like there might be arrests. But they didn't end up acting on that either.
Then rockets and bombs started flying and negotiations were over.
Israel and Lebanon peace negotiations are easy. There is no actual contentious issue between them. The problem is that the Lebanese government isn't really sovereign over Lebanon. They can't tell Hezbollah what to do. Can't control their borders or prevent militants from doing what they like.
The two (long-shot) angles on peace are (1) Lebanon somehow transcends sectarianism and gains sovereignty (2) the Lebanese state meditates a peace between israel and Hezbollah.
The first is unlikely. The second makes Hezbollah the sovereign.

It’s always felt odd to me that Israel has taken such a violent approach with Lebanon rather than trying to bolster anti-Hezbollah forces from within Lebanon and ally with them to disarm Hezbollah
A supermajority of Lebanon wants Hezbollah disarmed yet they’re super entrenched - it seems like a missed opportunity for Israel to not take a more collaborative approach with Lebanese people to get rid of them rather than doing scorched earth shock-and-awe raids of southern Lebanon every couple years then pulling out
The cynical part of me assumes it’s because Israel doesn’t actually want a stable Lebanese government

There's 10,000 peace keepers in southern lebanon right now who have been there for 20 years. But the UN keeps their hands tied and prevents them from being effectual. If the UN was a functional organisation this could be solved already but they're not.

>It’s always felt odd to me that Israel has taken such a violent approach with Lebanon rather than trying to bolster anti-Hezbollah forces from within Lebanon and ally with them to disarm Hezbollah
They literally did - the South Lebanon Army was propped up to fight against Hezbollah in the 90's and collapsed in 2000.

>bolster anti-Hezbollah forces from within Lebanon and ally with them to disarm Hezbollah
That is the Lebanese armed forces and they could have asked for direct military help anytime from other countries or the UN for the past 20 years since the UNSC resolution ordering Hezbollah to disarm.
Israel did what you asked for the past 20 years and what did it get them other than well armed Hezbollah before the recent wars?

Emphasis on Lebanon.
Not Hezbollah.
There lies the issue.
It cannot and will not happen because as long as Hezbollah exists, it will not be possible for Lebanon to ever make a peace deal with Israel.
Lebanon's army and security forces do not have a monopoly of arms in Lebanon and the non-state actor is armed with more powerful arms than them by Iran.
So this is not happening until Hezbollah is dismantled.
