jojo's fans can kinda be annoying when you suggest skipping parts (i should know, i'm a jojo's fan), but yeah Steel Ball Run is a very good starting place

Yeah, it being a clean start without all the baggage of what came before makes it really accessible. It also helps that it (imo) has the best cast of characters outside part 4.

What would be the correct order to watch then? Just watch it in chronological order time period wise?

Literally just start from the first part and go in part order. If you don’t like it and are interested in part 7 then I’d say skip to it. Part 1 - 6 are probably best watched in that order, but part 7 is kinda a soft reset so while it references other parts it’s a different universe so it’s not that important to watch the others
Edited: universe instead of timeline
113
KnownEaterFromMMar 20, 2026

I’m of the opinion that even part 7 hits a lot less harder if you haven’t already consumed 1-6, especially towards the end. No jojo fan would tell you that the world reveal would have done absolutely anything for them if not for the previous parts and it’s easily one of the best plot beats in all of jojo
32
2796MattMar 20, 2026
+10
Yeah, I follow up in a later comment that part 7 is definitely better if you follow the normal reading order. Especially for that reveal which spoils part 3 biggest surprise. I’d say it’s the second best entry point in the series but not the recommended one.

It doesn't really, this is just an entirely new story that only has superficial connections to previous stories

Practically Part 7 is in alternative universe from the previous parts. There are some characters that are alternative universe equivalents of part 1 -6 characters but they are essentially very different characters for the most part. The plots are completely different and mostly unrelated to previous parts. Hence, you’d probably get greater appreciation and enjoyment if you do go in part order but it’s not strictly necessary even if highly recommended. I’ll give you a warning, part 7 towards the end does spoil a certain thing of part 3. It makes a big reveal in part 3 much easier to guess.

Huh, this is news to me. I've kept up with the anime, not the manga so I wasn't aware of this reset.

The first 2 jojos are season1 you have something like a castlevania story, then something like a Indiana Jones story. (26 episodes total)
After that, the 3rd Jojo (second season) is a super long journey across the desert with tons of monster-of-the-week episodes. (48 episodes total) for me, this was the first time I put the series down
Next Jojo is crazy zany town, which almost turns the show into something like Ranma 1/2 (similar to Dandadan). This is when I realized that every season of Jojo is it's own genre, all within the same show. And every season, wildly different, each Jojo still manages to be "the most Jojo thing ever"

Jojo for me at least, have always been about the absurd and hype moments. And I would say that there are at least a couple of side characters who outshine the mc.

Absurd hype moments that are spontaneously clashed with legitimately some of the best character writing I've ever seen. The ending of part 1 left me floored when I first saw it, and it's easily my least favorite part of the show. Absolutely wild.

You need to watch them in order or start with part 7 (Steel Ball Run). The first six parts are all chronological and follow a linear story over time, but part 7 is like an alternate timeline where you don’t need to know anything from the first six parts.
4
DieHarderDaddyMar 20, 2026

It might, but not too much. The parts vary in production value, but even the first one from 2012 hasn't noticeably aged the way most 90s or 00s shonen manga adaptations have.

They’re all pretty good. You can appreciate it, because this season is in an “alternate universe” where things are remixed. For example, part 1 and part 7 both have the same main character (Johnathan/Johnny” Joestar, but they are foils to each other. They both come from well to do families, but where the former has starts out righteous, the latter is a pretty shallow person and has to grow into their heroism.

ConnivingSnip72Mar 20, 2026

I’ll second all the other people, one of the best things about JoJos is that every part has its own unique style and story, with only some plot threads or characters overlapping. So even if this part has the best quality so far, the difference is more so stylistic choices than actual quality ones.

The rest I highly advise watching in chronological order.

I'd consider it different for something like JoJo where events are interconnected but you're also looking at differing anthologies.
I especially don't think this holds true in manga and western superhero comics where everything is so unusually dense. I can't blame someone for maybe wanting to browse around to figure out if something is for them
Especially JJBA, where the first few episodes of the series will absolutely not secure whether or not it's a show for you. There are a TON of people who love Stardust and Diamond who couldn't be bothered to go back and rewatch Phantom Blood - or even Battle Tendency - in a thousand years

Honestly the jump in quality between Part 7 and Part 1 is pretty big. Part 2-6 are of varying quality of good but Part 1 is kinda whatever save for some iconic elements and Part 7 is an all timer.
I can see someone wanting to start at a high point of quality that's airing RIGHT NOW specially when it's almost standalone. There's a reason creators do these kind of safe soft reboots when the baggage gets a bit too big.

For most JoJo fans this has been the case for as long as they’ve been into the series. The manga this part is being adapted from came out in 2004 and everything made since then has been in this new universe. Generally, the new universe has been received very positively, and it’s a little less crazy here than it would be in most other series because each part of JoJos is pretty compartmentalized anyway. Not only do they feature different casts, locations and time periods, but they’re essentially each a different genre as well.

Technically, the Jojo anime itself started airing nearly 30 years after it started (not counting a cut down version of one of the Parts in the 90s), so they REALLY waited a long time for Jojo as a whole to be animated lol.

I think most fans see the new universe as a leveled up version of JoJo. It simultaneously gets rid of the baggage of the old timeline while also "remixing" familiar characters and stories from the old universe. It also helps that the new universe has easily the best writing and art we've seen from the series. Part 7-9 are incredible.

Part 7 (Steel Ball Run) is also when the series went from weekly publication to monthly publication, so in addition to it being a new timeline, it also served as a huge leap forward in the quality of the art and allowed the author to play with the structure a bit where you had longer chapters compared to previous entries.
It’s also technically when the series switched to publishing in a magazine that targeted a more mature demographic, which came with more creative freedom and resulted in a story that is more focused around character depth.
It was a confluence of factors that worked in Steel Ball Run’s favor to the point where you rarely hear people complain about it being an alternate timeline, and in fact you will most often hear people praise the “reboot” for revitalizing the series.

EDIT: The comment above me told such a good joke that I genuinely didn't even get it. Disregard my statement below; they're hilarious and are in NO SHAPE OR FORM trying to insult SBR.
Do you think JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is Umamusume, the anime/gacha series about Real Life Horses Portrayed By Cute Anime Girls?
Because it's just baffling to see JJBA described as "some horse racing anime," even by its biggest haters.

Jojo isn't about horse racing, it's about bizarre ass pulls.

couldn’t even get the number of parts right. you really don’t miss much by skipping straight to sbr, plus you’ll still get the experience of the callbacks, just the other way around. instead of “oh, urmd avdul is like avdol from part 3,” you get “oh, avdol’s like urmd avdul from part 7.” same experience, other way around. araki himself has even stated that part 7 is a great jumping in point, that was a big part of the reason that sbr wasn’t even called “jojo’s bizarre adventure” for its first year or so of publication. he wanted it to be viewed as its own thing, and not have the baggage of being a followup.

Long time Jojos watcher and avid fan, I got to disagree. After the universe reset, this really is a great place to start. Sure you might miss some references but it's not going to be anything that's a detriment to a newcomer's experience
