I used to think the same thing but man when you start learning the differences between all the sparrows, or all the warblers. They really do look drastically different.

That's probably why it escaped notice. People who saw it thought it was a common, known bird.

Yes, that is what it says in the article. That these were considered to be part of another species but were found to be distinct through a lot of DNA anlysis and stuff like that
