Wondering when Listnook Gold had options to turn off ads? Was that announced at some time? I wish it was a bit more selective - I'd love to leave the side ads on but just cannot abide moving, noisy or political ads.
Would be great if this had more granularity - like a down arrow for an ad puts it on some kind of black list.
Even though I have Gold (yes, you may worship me now) I still don't mind adding some extra income since Listnook is great and completely un-gamed unlike another site which will remain unDigged.

Ah. But you didn't shoot fireworks out of the screen so I guess I missed that. 8-(
Nice. Well, as I noted for my preferences the granularity would be directed towards the contents and type of the ad. I'm not sure if that would be the preference of other folks. Maybe you'll get some additional comments.
1 additional item which would be nice would be to list the date that one was joined to the Listnook Gold elite. Then I could know about when to donate some more (weekly, yearly, per millennium or whatever your favorite interval is).
A final ass kissing to say thanks and keep up the good work. Smooch.

Just click your username. And you can hover over the gold expiration information for a precise date.
BTW, thanks for not only subscribing, but for being willing to continue looking at at least some of the ads. That lets us know we're doing a good job screening them.

Dear Listnook Overlords -- I *was* one of the people who was thinking the new subscription stuff was.... well, bad. I figured it was the beginning of the end.
I am going to say that I am still a little leery about where all this is going. I don't like the idea of paying for access to the Internet. I know Listnook isn't the whole of the Internet, and is better than most of it. But I've been online on Mr. Happy Internet for probably as long as you dudes have been alive.
I was involved in BBSing when it was new and cool! I will add -- Just for the record, I will always believe that Fidonet sucked ass! But that said, Tom Jennings is still and always will be cool. WWIVnet, WWIVlink, IceNET were and always shall be better. Yeah, so I have weird contradictory opinions.... I am large, I contain cheese-balls.
Anyway, did I have a point? There was a point here somewhere.... Oh, yeah.... I've decided to abandon my discomfort and become a Listnook Gold Member. You're giving the extra features of the masses convinced me that you really are trying to do the right thing.... and aren't just filling a room with hundred dollar bills where you all retire and have money fights.
I still think the Conde Nast needs to pull their corporate heads out of their asses and give you guys some of the funds from the corp sofa cushions.
I'm still a bit leery, but figure for $30/year I'll try it. I can always get together a posse down the line and hunt each of you down and read you some Vogon poetry if this doesn't work out. Remember, I have access to Vogon poetry. So, you best not mess this up.

Is it possible to implement a feature to allow me to choose to render less than 500 comments per page? The "load more comments" thing doesn't bother me, and I'd be perfectly fine with only initially loading the first 50 or 100 comments per page. I usually only glance at the top ones anyway.
I would be happy to choose to render less comments if it helps listnook run faster.

Our goal is to sign 1% or 2% of listnookors up for gold. In particular, if the number is ever more than that, we'll know we have too many gold features.
18
thoraxAug 9, 2010
+14
To be fair, there's a few weaknesses in that logic.
This assumes that the only reason people pick Gold is to get the features. In fact, there are many of us (especially charter users) who do it just because we want Listnook to make money and continue to grow, etc, stay non-slimy. The same sort of reasons I can justify giving NPR money-- I want you to stick around however I can. If someone has to pay, it might as well be me.
So if you convince 30% of Listnook the same thing, it sounds like you'd then kill all the Gold features. Yet they might not actually be related to the $problem$. In fact, if overall traffic grew substantially and Gold user percentage also grew substantially, you might have struck just the right balance that those people were convinced Gold was the best thing for Listnook.
I'd say your goal should be to sign up as many Gold members as you can that doesn't decrease the overall site traffic. Other listnookors will vote with their feet and when they do, you've gone too far. Admit it, scale back then.
Yet don't set arbitrary percentage limits on the features because it's an artificial (and weak) method of seeing what should stay Gold and what shouldn't.
14

He means that if they get more than 2%, they will roll those features out to everyone.

[well for the record there actually was a bug](http://www.listnook.com/r/announcements/comments/cz6mn/new_features_to_start_your_week/c0wcy3y)
But to answer your question directly: we're treating it as a short term thank you to everyone who bought gold and then we'll push it out to everyone shortly. One feature I'd like to see, similar to the "load 1000 comments", would be something that would automatically unfold all loaded-but-hidden comments >= a certain threshold. I find that I often have to go into my preferences and change my comment threshold lower for the discussions that really interest me, and then later I need to raise it back up to resume a reasonable S:N ratio.
tl;dr: It'd be great if I could view just the current page at a different "threshold" without affecting my preferences.

Don't worry, it's not like we're going to have five days of really obscure logos this week.

It is written in the Book of Listnook, chapter 4, verse 56:
As the Admins taketh away Gold feature exclusivity,
so be it that new features shall be made available for the faithful.

is alt text something that has to be tested so extensively that it needs a beta?

Thanks guys for all the hard work! But, I have one request for a new feature. In the listnook toolbar that you can have come up with external links, can you have a link on that to the comments page?
Just an idea. Thanks!

They're probably just making it exclusive to gold members for a few days before making it public so we can see some jokes/references that the lurkers can't.

I still can't believe that Listnook has turned into a site that charges people for features. It isn't a donation, this isn't a charity, it is a charge for exclusive features.

MatmaRexAug 9, 2010

It's a charge for letting you be a beta tester. Go read more announcements.

Bills? Give it up Raldi. We know Listnook is on the cloud.

* infinitely scalable
* RAID 99
* works offline

How is it that other sites that are in the top 500 most viewed on the internet most often don't charge anybody any money at all? Update how you do your ads and a site redesign would also help bring in some revenue (by bringing in more advertisers and more users who are more likely to click).

I feel like I'm the only person who is adamantly against the whole Listnook Gold thing.
First of all, in the beginning, the admins said Listnook Gold was supposed to provide features to paying members that couldn't be rolled out to the community at whole, due to resources. Alright, that's fine. Until a gold member screenshotted the post in /r/lounge about how it was a glorified beta testing program.
So... they completely lied, first of all. Then they tricked users into paying for new features... only to later tell them that they're just being test beds. If they had just waited, then they would have gotten the features regardless. And then they continue charging them a subscription? How is this in any way better than a donation system? Listnook makes more money by raping the users in the ass harder?
God damn, Listnook. I am beyond disappointed.

If you feel deceived or regretful in any way, just say the word and I'll give you a full 100% refund, no questions asked.
If you don't like the idea of us paying for our servers through the use of subscriptions, what would you prefer? More ads? More annoying ads?

From then on, I read it all in the Professor's voice until:

And then finished reading in Oprah's =(

Where is all the outrage, where is all the backlash now? The listnook admins did exactly what they said they would do, unwaveringly mind you, throughout all the negativity. Thank you, admins and Gold members -- you are the ones who are making these improvements possible for listnookors now and prospective listnookors of the future. What a f****** great site this is.

I'm not sure this is the place to put such a request ... but one feature I'd pay for as a Gold member is the ability to embed listnook comments onto my webpage.
That is, I could submit a link to listnook and then embed the comments for that link within my webpage.

I think [this](http://www.listnook.com/r/programming/comments/cxh3a/we_just_added_jsonp_to_listnooks_json_api/) should allow you to do that.

It's not sorting through all my comments. For instance, if I sort my top [all time], my top comment is 162 points 2 months ago, yet if I change it to top [this week] my top comment is 195 points 1 day ago.
I'm not so much complaining or trying to make waves as I am just informing. It's not too important to me, I just seemed to notice it doesn't seem to be reading everything unless specified while playing with the new features.
Thanks for improving the site though, with updates and upgrades and all!!

well for the moment *everyone* is clicking on user pages.
Also, the new db we brought up this morning is priming its RAM cache.
Both of these are temporary problems and we're rebalancing the cluster accordingly.
Hovering over a logo does not bring up any text for me.

Hurray! I have been wanting title text on the logo for ages!
However, said title text displays on the front page but not comment pages. I assume this is likely related to custom css for different sublistnooks? It would be nice to see the title text on sublistnooks without custom logos/css.
