New listnook gold feature: filter sublistnooks from /r/all

Posted by bsimpson

We're releasing a new gold feature today: the ability to filter sublistnooks from /r/all. Just go to www.listnook.com/r/all-exclude1-exclude2-and_so_on. Tired of cute animal pictures? Check out www.listnook.com/r/all-aww. If you want to see content from the sublistnooks you don't frequently visit there's a button on /r/all to exclude your subscriptions. To go with this new feature we're ungating the "Per sublistnook karma listing" feature. Everyone can now see their karma per sublistnook on their userpage. See all the gold features at www.listnook.com/gold/about and [buy some gold today](http://listnook.com/gold)!

what if you filter /r/all from /r/all

Try it.

For those looking for an explanation, it's filtering posts that are specifically submitted to /r/all. You can't post to /r/all, so nothing in filtered.

She's definitely not saying "stop". She might be saying "Stah" or something like it, but it's impossible to say "stop" without your lips touching to make the P sound. Try it. Downvote away /r/TheStopGirl denialists, but in the cool hours of the pre-dawn night, when you're laying sleepless and alone in your cold bed, the truth will find you.

I admit, when I first went there I thought she was saying "no", then when I understood the reason for the sublistnook, she suddenly started saying "stop", and now I can't see her saying "no", no matter how hard I try. There's magic in that there gif.

for all the "you're ripping off RES!" sort of comments: I've got no problem with it. It's not like I created every idea in RES myself. RES is mostly a response to all of you and what you want out of it. I just bash on some keys to make your ideas happen. Sure, some ideas are my own, but many if not most of them come from you guys. It's not like listnook's stealing my brainchild. If you guys want it from RES, you probably would want it equally if not even more from listnook proper -- so good on them for noticing and listening. You should still get Listnook Gold even if you use RES. Listnook Gold's highlighting of new comments alone is worth it for me - but so is supporting a site (and by proxy, the staff of said site) that I use quite a lot.
1528
Deimorz Jan 8, 2013 +188
Exactly, both RES and listnook try to add features based on common user requests, so a lot of crossover should be *expected*, really. And having it built into listnook itself is always superior to requiring a browser addon, for quite a few reasons (returning a full page of posts, support on all browsers and mobile, etc.). I imagine you probably think of it similar to the way I do with AutoModerator. I'd love to have a lot of its features built into listnook officially, it would be a *good* thing if they "copy" features from it. Things like RES, AutoModerator, etc. get created to fill feature gaps in listnook proper, and it's great when some of those gaps cease to exist.
188
SystemOutPrintln Jan 8, 2013 +3
I'll praise the day when listnook adds native NeverEndingListnook support so it won't have to remove half the page like RES does due to the posts changing posistions
3
honestbleeps Jan 8, 2013 +5
not possible, really. RES can't do it because javascript / browsers can't do it - assuming I'm interpreting you correctly. If you're talking about the back button thing: it's impossible to do, because when you hit your back button, your browser presents the page *as it was before any javascript had run*... RES then has to say "oh, it looks like you got here by hitting the back button" and use what it stored in memory to do its best to put you back where you were. there's unfortunately no way around this simply due to how browsers work.

publ1c_stat1c Jan 8, 2013 +105
Agreed. But one problem with having both is now [I have two save comments](http://i.imgur.com/0vWv3.jpg). And to be honest I have no idea which one is for RES and which one is for Gold.

feature request/biz idea. Golden RES badge? Only visible to RES users, and available to persons that chipped in a dollar the last 12 months? I'd love for there to be a functioning marketplace for you to trade that bashing of keys at a value above zero, while still keeping it fairly real.

> supporting a site (and by proxy, the staff of said site) that I use quite a lot. I like to think about this, at the very least, as *paying for the servers*. When I visit, and enjoy my stay I'd like to be an asset, and not a liability that needs to be offset by sleazy advertizing dollars, deep-down-the-rabbithole privacy-breaching data mining (much can ble attained by publicly parsing listnook, but I'd like for listnook proper to not dabble in that shit for cash, at least they'll keep those server logs to themselves etc.). tl;dr: put Gold in one end, listnook comes out the other. that's why they call it Listnook Gold(tm).
5
Iggyhopper Jan 8, 2013 +8
As an extension developer for another site, this rings too true. You don't create the extension to compete with the site you developed it for. That is not the intention. In fact, having the site add the features themselves makes it easier for you, because you now have less code to maintain, and can focus on other awesome features! Hurrah!
8
[deleted] Jan 9, 2013 +22
for my first 6 months of listnook i thought RES was a phishing thing because of the advert spam people did/still do
22
paulsteinway Jan 8, 2013 +3
This comes in handy if you browse listnook on someone else's computer that doesn't have RES installed.
3
Polycephal_Lee Jan 8, 2013 +2
Plus it's way easier to change on the fly than RES is. I like it, and I bought gold for it finally. I've used this site for years and it's been amazing, I've learned tons and been entertained. I figured I should pay a little for it, at least to encourage it's continued development and support.
2
Jedimastert Jan 8, 2013 +2
Did you make RES? If so, I love you from the bottom of my heart. If not, I still love you, but just from the middle-to-top. Also, I feel like it should be "the staff of a site (and by proxy, the site itself)" rather than the other way around. Just a thought. I completely agree with you.
2
honestbleeps Jan 8, 2013 +11
> Did you make RES? If so, I love you from the bottom of my heart. Indeed I did.... thanks!
11
Deimorz Jan 8, 2013 +55
Excellent, thanks. This is definitely something that a lot of people have been asking for. A nice future enhancement to this might be to just add a button on each post in /r/all for "exclude posts from this sublistnook in the future" and make the configuration persistent, instead of users needing to manually update and keep track of a URL with all of their filters. You could have a box shown on the right side of /r/all (similar to the one on http://www.listnook.com/listnooks/mine) to be able to unfilter sublistnooks.
55
FirstVape Jan 8, 2013 +10
Yes, having to put it in the URL is crazy.
10
redtaboo Jan 8, 2013 +3
Yes, very nice, thank you admins! Now all the people that hate /r/aww (there are surprisingly a lot of listnookors that hate cat pictures) can remove it. Also, good call on the button to automagically exclude subscribed sublistnooks. In addition to what you mention; I would love to see the ability to save different multi-views within listnook in the future to go along with this functionality.
3
[deleted] Jan 8, 2013 +1
It's working for me - except for AdviceAnimals: http://i.imgur.com/HAzq9.png *(censored filtered list because I started with my subbed sublistnooks)* Note that I copypasted after it failed the first time, so I verified it's spelled correctly...

DTanner Jan 8, 2013 +181
This is a great idea! I never go to /r/all because it's always over 50% /r/Funny. After a few weeks of this feature being active, I would love to know the "top excluded" sub-Listnooks.

39
sacula Jan 8, 2013 +6
Completely agree. I have a good friend/coworker we make good money. My friend started smoking weed for the first time at 26. He quit his job to smoke weed ( we work in law enforcement and go through routine drug tests) he now delivers pizza for papa johns, this guy is now like the spokes person for rtrees, he acts like a 16 yr old, moved in with his mom and smokes weed all day everyday. I know this sounds like an after school special, but it happened. I find it sad.

[deleted] Jan 8, 2013 +4
I think there are default sublistnooks which generally do their jobs. r/worldnews, r/technology and r/science typically work as intended, and as for more 'interactive' sublistnooks r/iama works fairly well, and r/asklistnook often works well despite the quality of questions that get high up often being variable. I can see some people getting a little annoyed by the latter two, but I can't imagine people getting frustrated by having to see headlines of stories about world news, technology and science. "Argh, this pisses me off so much! I hate being informed about what's going on in the world!"

I don't see r/atheism getting too many front page posts. Tho I only generally check the first two pages of r/all. I got RES to filter r/aww and r/circlejerk, and eventually threw in r/starcraft(annoying when there is a big tourney), r/trees, and most sport subs.

Do you ever go back to your old accounts? I've got one that I haven't posted with in *years* which still gets PMs in response to old comments/submissions pretty regularly.
8
[deleted] Jan 8, 2013 +8
I used to delete the accounts after I left them, but now I leave them intact. I do go back every once in a while, mainly if I want to leave a 'throwaway' comment but don't feel like making a throwaway account. It is fun to see those 3 month old messages, though. Sometimes I'll reply just to throw people off.

[deleted] Jan 8, 2013 +19
Previously admins were opposed to this because it would prevent people from downvoting content they don't like, thus undermining the ranking system. What changed?
19
spladug Jan 8, 2013 +42
This is in no way like filtering. This is essentially another option at the subscription level. The problem with filtering is that it takes away content *within* a sublistnook. This removes whole sublistnooks from your view. Rather than shirking your franchise by ignoring content, this is essentially like just not subscribing to the sublistnook at all. I still strongly oppose tagging and filtering (such as what RES does) for [the reasons I've stated many times before](http://www.listnook.com/r/ideasfortheadmins/comments/15x7sj/listnook_needs_tags/c7qnkno).
42
redtaboo Jan 8, 2013 +9
This is a bit different though; I'd bet they are still against filtering within sublistnooks themselves for the reasons you stated; however votes from /r/all are generally from people that have no interest in a community and votes from people that don't care about a community can be detrimental. This seems to be a way to give users another way to "unsubscribe" from a sublistnook, which itself is a form of filtering.
9
kemitche Jan 8, 2013 +4
That argument is for filtering from within a sublistnook; /r/all-whatever is more akin to subscribing/unsubscribing, which is an integral part of listnook.
4
psYberspRe4Dd Jan 8, 2013
http://www.listnook.com/r/all-pics-videos-wtf-aww-politics-atheism-leagueoflegends-minecraft-pokemon-starcraft-gaming-funny-gonewild-adviceanimals is pretty interesting Damn amazing, didn't think this would get featured when I read a /r/ideasfortheadmins post about it [\(there were many posts suggesting this, find them here\)](http://www.listnook.com/r/ideasfortheadmins/search?q=r%2Fall&restrict_sr=on) --- Edit: got an idea now, browse /r/all with all sublistnooks beside the ones you're subscribed to by going to **http://metalistnook.com/format** and getting a list of all the subs you're subscribed to, then replace all the pluses with minuses (someone please have a nice site or script to do this [eventually I could make this happen I guess]) and place it after /r/all . Is there a maximum of sublistnooks to exclude ? Edit: didn't see that link on the sidebar - however it's not all of my subscribed subs just 100 or so of them. I guess there is a limit but I will test it anyway later, got a little console application doing what I described above if needed.

So... Like [Listnook Enhancement Suite](http://listnookenhancementsuite.com) does then?
1411
legatic Jan 8, 2013 +54
[Listnook Enhancement Suite](http://listnookenhancementsuite.com) does this on the client side, meaning you get less than 50 links per page (it just hides the ones you have filtered, but you'll be missing those numbers on the list) The [Listnook Gold](http://www.listnook.com/help/gold/) version does it server side, so you still get 50 links per page. Which is good because... uh... daddy needs his medicine...
54
smog_alado Jan 8, 2013 +30
I imagine the listnook gold version would avoid wasting bandwidth with the filtered stuff though. RES probably just hides things after they have been downloaded.
30
FermatsLastRolo Jan 8, 2013 +154
RES just hides them, so if 50 of the top 200 posts on /r/all are from sublistnooks you've got filtered, you'll only see 150 posts. This method won't return posts from those subs at all, so you'll still get the full number.

They could try selling karma, I'm sure some ~~idiots~~ people would buy that! Edit: This wasn't a serious suggestion btw, I know it would undermine the integrity of the upvote downvote system we all love (most of the time) so much. Edit 2: To elaborate, I was thinking that people may be less inclined to contribute to the site if karma becomes 'c****' or bought, I believe people like to have more karma than others for the 'prestige', for lack of a better word, so the value of having high karma points would drop. It's a gamer thing, people want the high score, but if the scores can be bought there's less value in achieving it.

Actually listnook admin raldi [said](http://www.listnook.com/r/announcements/comments/cotz3/this_was_a_triumph_tldr_thanks_everyone_for/c0u4qos?context=1) that listnook gold was always supposed to be about new features and not merely a donation (or supporting listnook as you said it). But I have to agree that historically it wasn't really used for new features, maybe it's changing now.

Does anyone remember how much anger and gnashing of teeth there was when Listnook Gold was announced over how introducing money was going to disrupt and destroy the community? Still waiting for that one to happen. Edit: If there's a way to figure out where this came from I can't figure it out, so I can't give the deserved thanks personally, but this was a kind, thoughtful, and endearingly ironic gesture. Warm and sincere thanks!

It was definitely a game-changer. And by weird happenstance, the same day I first gifted someone listnook gold, I recieved it myself for an 11-month old comment. Karma in action!

I call it the "golden upvote" for this very reason.

Listnook gold does nothing that RES can't do. The entire point of Listnook gold is to help support the site that ~~you~~ I spend all day on.
95
Baron_Wobblyhorse Jan 8, 2013 +43
Not totally true. Any Listnook Gold features that were previously in place weren't added to RES (most notably marking new comments in threads that you've visited already)...

tell me about it. i hate using listnook on my phone. i am constantly shocked at how much stupid shit reaches the front page of r/all. then again, it can be a good reminder of the actual demographics of listnook.

17
ryeguy Jan 8, 2013 +18
Yes? I don't know what you're looking for here. Is listnook not allowed to implement things server side that RES fakes client side or something?
18
Entropis Jan 8, 2013 +15
RES isn't mandatory or owned by Listnook. Believe it or not, there's users who don't use RES, so for them, they can't filter. Now, with this addition to Listnook Gold, they'll be able to (assuming they have it).
15
neutronicus Jan 8, 2013 +3
A little better, because blocking things in RES doesn't replace them with anything. Of course, the *real* awesome Gold feature would be the ability to block imgur.com, rather than specific sublistnooks.
3
reseph Jan 8, 2013 +10
Most likely, why? Isn't it good to have a server-side feature available?
10
doctuhjason Jan 8, 2013 +116
You should hire /u/honestbleeps. A lot of the gold features seem to be including things in RES!

Shadow14l Jan 8, 2013 +92
Writing browser extensions is very much different and less difficult than writing server and database management code. In fact, Listnook is open source, so if he really wanted too, he could write the code himself too right now.
92
AerateMark Jan 8, 2013 +19
Except the admins have to manually accept these edits, and you can't just add features against their will. The open source code is more handy for having people fix bugs, especially small ones. Also, RES is made in Javascript mostly, and Listnook is in Python and some other programming languages. It's an entirely different structure.
19
reseph Jan 8, 2013 +56
>Except the admins have to manually accept these edits, and you can't just add features against their will. Yes, but this is fairly obvious. >The open source code is more handy for having people fix bugs, especially small ones. Not at all! I added the mark NSFW feature.

I'd imagine a front-end engineer at listnook doesn't have to write too much back-end code. At least I hope so, for their sake.

are you sick of being asked to hire me yet by people who aren't me? it's getting kind of old for me to see comments like this, and then debates about technical stuff from people who don't even know what they're talking about, etc... so um.. sorry this keeps happening? if moving to the west coast ever hits my radar I'd certainly drop you guys a line though ... in fact I'll be out there in Feb. I should buy you guys a beer.

Didn't you guys say when listnook gold first came out that you weren't going to make features gold-exclusive? I recall the idea was that you would give gold members access to features before the rest of the listnook population, but not that you would simply never give them to the whole population.

Time to get some Listnook gold and finally say goodbye to /r/atheism forever.
408
DOTAnLOLrTheSameGame Jan 8, 2013 +374
/r/atheism shouldn't even be on the front page. I'm an atheist but that place is just filled with ignorance, bigotry, and hatred.
374
bartonar Jan 8, 2013 +99
Something that people don't realize is that /r/atheism is filled with New Atheists, not atheists. Atheists believe there is no god, but generally don't care what other people believe. New Atheists believe that not only is there no god, but that atheists and theists cannot co-exist, that theism is the most dangerous force in the universe, and that telling a child about religion is abuse. They essentially follow the teachings of Dawkins, Hitchens, and Harris.

>I recommend filtering all default sublistnooks All of the defaults quell opposing opinions and post stupid shit. There was a rug on the front page of /r/wtf the other day. /r/funny isn't actually funny. /r/aww is f****** annoying. /r/gaming is all DAE 90S KIDS?? ZELDA MARIO NES ZOMG. Almost all the posts in /r/science are sensationalised. /r/adviceanimals is full of 10 year olds. ([DAE INSIDE JOKES???](http://i.qkme.me/3shfln.jpg)) I'm fairly certain most people on /r/politics think any Republican has an IQ below 70. I unsubscribed from almost all of the defaults, but I browse /r/all on my phone because I'm too lazy to log in on it. Honestly, the quality of the comments and posts in small sublistnooks is *vastly* superior to those of large ones. There are almost literally no pun threads, it isn't an attempt to make the same regurgitated joke, people post actual opinions and thought-provoking discussion instead of karma whoring circlejerks about friend-zones and democrats and the incoming police state (cringe).

yglm2 Jan 8, 2013 +27
They leave it so people will sign up to remove it.
27
[deleted] Jan 9, 2013 +2
It got there using the same rules as all the other sublistnooks, so it would be unfair to remove it specifically. I really don't understand a lot of the hate for /r/atheism, though. The content sucks, but the comment sections are often average or better (only considering defaults) than other sublistnooks. Whenever an OP is misleading or just plain wrong, the top few comments are generally a pretty thorough debunking of the claim. /r/adviceanimals is far worse both in terms of content and the discussions (*hello rampant racism/sexism*), but /r/atheism catches all the grief because it's content is about a touchy subject. People on every sublistnook are assholes, but if you're being an a****** about religion or politics suddenly it's a whole 'nother problem, apparently.
2
fucking_drunk Jan 8, 2013 +8
/r/all doesn't have anything to do with which subs are defaults.
8
[deleted] Jan 8, 2013 +6
But the defaults have more subscribers and more activity, so they tend to turn up on /r/all more often.

Okay, now can everybody shut the f*** up about this being an RES feature, there is an obvious and significant benefit to having this feature server-side rather than browser side and that is you can have it anywhere, like colleges and work-places who don't allow extensions on the browsers, also since it uses URL's you can share your lists with people, that I like. [**EDIT**]Also, [here](http://www.listnook.com/r/all-AdviceAnimals-announcements-AskListnook-atheism-aww-bestof-blog-funny-gaming-IAmA-movies-Music-pics-politics-science-technology-todayilearned-videos-worldnews-WTF) is /r/all with all of the default sublistnooks subtracted.
8

F*** it, I'm signing up. Bye bye /r/gaming and your rubbish in-jokes that no one else gets
18
biffbobsen Jan 8, 2013 +3
Ok honest question from someone who doesn't have gold: How is this any different than being able to customize your sublistnooks with a regular account? Isn't that what being able to subscribe/unsubscribe from individual sublistnooks is for in the first place?
3
PlNG Jan 8, 2013 +10
Not to sound hipster, but at times the noise from the bug subs tend to drown out the small subs. While sub filtration from /r/all is great I would genuinely be more impressed if there was an /r/all that didn't include the defaults. Maybe ~~/r/Other~~ /r/Different?
10
Deimorz Jan 8, 2013 +21
Well, [if you have gold you can get that now](http://www.listnook.com/r/all-funny-pics-announcements-AskListnook-blog-worldnews-todayilearned-science-IAmA-gaming-WTF-videos-technology-politics-Music-movies-bestof-AdviceAnimals-aww-atheism).
21
t21spectre Jan 9, 2013 +4
How is this any different from unsubscribing from sublistnooks so they don't appear on your front page?
4
Silpion Jan 9, 2013 +2
The one and only feature that would get me to buy gold (and I would buy it instantly) is **good support for deep comment searches**. I'm an /r/AskScience panelist, and so often I will have answered a question wonderfully 6 months ago and not be able to find it to help someone out now. So much of what I've written is essentially lost because I can't find it. This also came up with the Best of 2012 awards. Many of us gave up trying to find nominees because the search is so bad. Google is no good for comment searching.
2
BauerUK Jan 8, 2013 +5
For everyone saying "RES has done this for ages!", listnook implementing this feature makes it more useful. Consider you have 25 items on the front page, and 10 of them are from /r/aww and you have filtered out /r/aww In RES, all that can happen is that RES can hide those 10 posts and leave 15 posts (this is why you might notice missing numbers on the left) On listnook, instead of just hiding the 10 posts they can show the next most relevant 10 posts, giving you a full list. Not to mention that the feature can be faster since it's delivered by listnook instead of hacked on afterwards in the browser.
5
bboe Jan 8, 2013 +3
Question: will /r/all-whatever go back up to 1000 listings? If so then that should be mentioned because the feature provides more data than the RES equivalent.
3

[GOD F****** DAMMIT](http://i.imgur.com/k6fv5.png)  Also, interesting factoid, I actually got my two months listnook gold  from the thread where you first announced Gold giving through  comments, which makes today exactly two months since then.  If you add another feature exactly two months from now I will probably  start to suspect that you post these on a monthly/bimonthly basis so  the upsurge of people who buy it when these threads are posted will  be running out just as you add another feature so you can get people  into rhythms and use habit-forming marketing strategies to manipulate  people into buying more of your product.
