I know he's a Tolkien super fan, but I was not expecting this headline lol -- especially given that David Ellison killed his show and will now own Warner Bros

Well this deal has 0 to do with Ellison because the deal still has to go thru, so Warner and hbo still operate like business as usual where they (ellisons) have no real power & the people in charge are still the same people who did Superman and sinners and everything last year, been doing game of thrones for all this time, curbed, the Pitt, etc etc. So this movie and contract are not under their approval yet and he could even finish it before that finalizes. It depends on a few things. Most ellisons can do is put pressure to do or not do what they prefer, but they still have to pass all the regulation and not just of the USA.

I hated this at first but read the article - Colbert isn't remaking the movies. he's adapting the early part of Book 1 that Jackson did not adapt. GREAT

He is not. Colbert wrote a fan fiction.

He wrote a fanfiction framing device to place the content of those chapters in a new adventure set 14 years after Frodo leaves. The source is the article. Sometime fan fiction is ok.

That's not what the other poster said. The meat of this sounds like the Tom Bombadil stuff everyone of my Tolkien fan friends complained about being left out of the Peter Jackson movies.

Tom Bombadil is a weird omission but even in the book I remember just him existing being weird.
He's basically implied to be incredibly powerful/a demigod, the ring has no effect on him and the only reason he's not given the ring for safekeeping is that he basically doesn't give a sh*t about it so he might lose it.
Along with having the power to end the story, it's also one of the 100000 stops that breaks the pacing in the book.

Your standard is so low that Stephen Colbert and his son are credible enough for this IP?
no wonder Hollywood has gone downhill so much

He’s a hell of a lot more credible in being he’s a massive fan of the books as opposed to Amazon crapping out rings of power

Awww come on, Seth MacFarlane's passion for Star Trek that make Orville better than Trek. So expect whatever Stephen Colbert cranks out to be better than Tolkien. /s

it's one thing to make a terrible comedy based on Star Trek but he didn't remake Star Trek. so not the best comparison. plus I already said I would rather not see it done. there has not been anything good put on screen in the LOTR universe made since the original trilogy.

He had passion for late night too and the result wasn’t good. I love the Colbert Report though. I think LOTR is fine, and the Rings of Power is fun to watch

I don’t know if that format is just too dated for me to enjoy, I did love Conan in the 90s, but I couldn’t get into Colbert at all. I loved the Colbert report and his work in the daily show. I think I just enjoy him far more as a character actor than I like him as himself.

That’s definitely an opinion, definitely an opinion. He isn’t Jimmy Fallon levels of bad, but when Kimmel is the better host you wonder whatever happened to Conan

This is a tough one. Colbert knows the books and movies more than anyone else, except maybe Peter. He's arguably the #1 superfan. However, I don't think he has experience in writing and producing movies, and I don't know if these six chapters are enough to make not only a movie, but a compelling movie. So I don't know.

porkywoodMar 25, 2026

And unless he decides to fund it all himself, everybody will want to have a say in the production and then we’ll see some ham-fisted attempt at script-writing by focus group.
Or maybe South Park will have another Kathleen Kennedy style episode.

The difference is that there is a whole ton of material that Tolkein wrote. That material could be adapted into new movies or show. However, the Tolkein estate has been hesitant to grant those rights because they did not like the LOTR movies. Ironically, that is leading to lower quality adaptations than if they just let people use the actual source material (SIlmarillion, books of lost tales, etc.).
4
DaJellyMar 25, 2026

star wars had like 30 years of material written before disney took over the ip. most of it very good. they could have easily adapted those stories but chose not to.
8
gs181Mar 25, 2026
+7
The only good stuff was by Timothy Zahn. Kevin Anderson wrote a ton of the star wars material, and that guy is all volume and no quality. He also wrote like 20 of the dune books after Herbert died. I appreciate the effort but god damn can we get a writer that goes for the right amount? Either we get George RR Martin that won't finish his shit, or we get a guy that finishes way too much stuff.
7
ye_olde_green_eyesMar 25, 2026

That decision was criminal. There was plenty of trash in that canon but SO MANY great stories and characters that would have been SO MUCH better than most of Disney's Star Wars output.
