The CDC lists a few symptoms of NWS in mammals, including: * Feeling maggots (larvae) move or seeing maggots within a skin wound or sore, or in the ears, nose, eyes, or mouth. * Painful skin wounds or sores that worsen within a few days. * A foul-smelling odor from the site of the infestation. * Bleeding from open sores.

>NWS is typically found in South America and parts of the Caribbean. However, the fly has steadily moved northward from South America through every country in Central America and Mexico since 2023. Also the larva eat living tissue. Which is why it's a concern.

>According to the Center for Disease Control, the New World Screwworms (NWS) are a species of parasitic flies that eat the tissue or flesh of both warm-blooded animals and people, and lay their eggs inside body openings such as wounds, the nose, eyes, ears and mouth. >The eggs then hatch into maggots/larvae which then eat live tissue. This can cause a painful and foul-smelling wound. No thanks.

So glad they cancelled the USAID dollars! Fyi - I'm being sarcastic but if I recall there was a lot of money we spent to prevent shit like this from spreading using USAID as the funding source. Since then we are still finding it but having to use other means including the USDA funding.

CMWalsh88 Apr 15, 2026 +1201
The us ran a program of breeding the flys and then radiation zapped them so they were sterile. They then spread them in Panama to keep the breeding flys south. The main thing that broke was illegal cattle transportation moving through. It will take a lot of time, money and corporation to push it back down to Panama.

The illegal cattle transportation issue is actually a big deal not many people know about. I run a small infectious disease startup lab and am getting funding way too easily for a bovine tuberculosis (bTB) test I'm working on. Normally I have to jump through hoop after hoop just to be denied funding on a project. HPAI and Coggins tests are 2 other ones that have unusually hot pathways to development right now.
71
Rich-Pomegranate1679 Apr 15, 2026 +827
The Trump admin defunded the program that stopped them from spreading to the U.S. *That's* the problem.
827
Pitt_CJs Apr 15, 2026 +85
I don't believe they defunded that program, it was another monitoring program run by the UN that also included the screwworm among many other parasites worldwide. They actually increased funding on the Panama program by an additional $21 million to double the output of sterile flies produced in Panama to 200 million flies per week. They also announced the construction of a second facility in Texas to produce an additional 300 million sterile flies per week.
85
chainsawinsect Apr 15, 2026 +316
They did originally defund it, then decided later it was a mistake and re-funded it with a higher budget (essentially). But the U.S.-based efforts to contain the screwworm spread are still being hampered by the after-effects of the prior funding cuts (including cuts and layoffs impacting adjacent, related agencies).

Konnnan Apr 15, 2026 +250

The containment program is much cheaper to run if they can beat it back to Panama because of the bottleneck between North and South America

I worked for USAID in Central America before DOGE screwed us. We closely monitored the advancement of screw worm. Our ambassador was very worried about it. Alas... we had no funds to do anything about it because all of our health related funds were cut years before.
284
Sour_Patch_Drips Apr 15, 2026 +90
Whoa! I'm so glad someone on the ground and with experience can back this up. I'm so tired of all these people just throwing shade at USAID as if it did nothing of value.
90
cityofklompton Apr 15, 2026 +75
The idiots who throw shade as USAID for doing nothing and hold the mantra "America First" don't realize that investing in things like USAID that does work in foreign countries actually *is* America first because it prevents a lot of things from reaching America while sowing good will abroad. DOGE and anyone who supported it are either the most shortsighted people in America or just incredibly dumb (or both).
75
LeafsWinBeforeIDie Apr 15, 2026 +12
The same people make financial decisions for us all based on next quarter performance. When the guy at the front is near expiry, there is no incentive to plan beyond that expiry. Squeeze out what you can until there is nothing left. The squeeze is on what is left of middle class. Be thankful (in the short term) if you are in the top part of the K? The great churchill quote about pilots in the battle of britain: "Never was so much owed by so many to so few" has a whole new meaning taken in the context of today's regime. The destruction isn't just monetary, and the screwworm is just one of many newly undefended attack vectors, what other diseases and blights are also free to spread? Is the screwworm even the worst of whats coming?
12
WhyAreYallFascists Apr 15, 2026 +34

For this who arnt aware Screwworm is a flesh eating parasitic fly. Screwworms lays their eggs on wounds with the resulting maggots eating tissue. Unlike most flies that eat dead tissue, these fly larvae exclusively eat living tissue often resulting in massive gaping wounds that can become infected quite easily. Fortunately human cases aren't super common and the parasite primarily impacts cattle. This parasite was eradicated from the US in the 1960s. This was done by releasing sterile male flies. The flies only make once so by releasing sterile flies the female cannot lay viable eggs. The fly species was pushed down to the darien gap, and a border has been maintained there for several decades. **Videos with more information** Estimated cost savings for this parasites eradication is about 900 million dollars annually in the United States since the 1960s. [7 min video on parasites biology ](https://youtu.be/AkXfYKi3vMQ?si=nkEPSx6l4zAG3jnu) Recently the current admin has been trying to blame immigrants for the resurgence of this parasite, but this is just disinformation and it's much more related to cocaine smuggling and illegal cattle trade. [7 min video debunking misinformation ](https://youtu.be/61wts9flz_8?si=XbXLPF4f7l0guBz4) **Full disclosure**: I made these videos. I make educational videos about Parasitology In case any people are nerdy like me and want to learn about a really cool biology topic like toxoplasmosis (cat lady parasite), rfk's brain worm, and horse crab parasites.

136
Count_Rousillon Apr 15, 2026 +135
They were reinstated, but they still aren't as effective as they used to be. This is one of those programs where any extended pause hurts in a way that's hard to make up for with raw money.
135
FuzzyAd9407 Apr 15, 2026 +30
Id say with the same amount of money. The program being delayed means that it needs a massive boost to make up for lost ground but this administration doesnt give a f***, theyre too busy spending that money to kill kids in Iran

I thought the HVAC was cancelled because it was for a black history museum? But you're right, they cancelled transgenic research because they thought it would be a nice way to kick trans people (the cruelty is the point ). Unfortunately for everyone, transgenic research was cancer research, still got cut. [Elon also has a lovely anecdote about cancelling ebola vaccines](https://youtube.com/shorts/P4To-CU5SIM?si=rR_Ijwx5uuAGFiIK) (he thought this was proof that DOGE is good because they "fixed it pretty quickly")

I imagine it is because some areas do it with mosquitos, but Lyme disease isn’t taken seriously yet. Doctors don’t even test for Babesia, which is often tick born, even if you show all the symptoms. It’s also recognized as a long term infection, which Lyme disease is still fighting for.

7

It is not related at all to immigrants, cocaine, or cattle. It's because we were funding a program to hold the line on these worms in South America and Trump cut that program as part of DOGE. That's why the worms are up here now.

Not_so_ghetto Apr 15, 2026 +70
I'd recommend the second video. The funding to form the barriers wasn't cut. It was purposed just didn't actually happen. And these first outbreaks occured in 2024.

A-Halfpound Apr 15, 2026 +37
Outbreaks have happened sporadically throughout the decades since the 60s. That is nothing new. What is NEW is DOGEs disastrous fallout — federal agencies that would be involved in the screwworm effort are being affected by reductions in force (RIFs), travel freezes and hiring freezes—at a time when travel and interagency collaboration are necessary for this issue.

Stuff like this spreads quietly and then suddenly it’s everyone’s problem. Not trying to be dramatic, but anything that literally eats living tissue is nightmare fuel. Hope they get ahead of it fast before it turns into something bigger.

It's been our problem for quite some time.  There's been a solution silently chugging away for decades that went down. It's one of the pieces that led to beef price spikes. Just part of the deluge of issues we were dealing with in the US last year.

Nocoffeesnob Apr 16, 2026 +7
That went down because of Elon and Trump. Say it by name, why are you acting like it just happened to randomly stop?

mrpickles Apr 15, 2026 +34
Lol, the people in charge are too busy trying to convince everyone they are literally god.   They don't even know what this is.  Last week they held a conference in DC celebrating their victory over climate change lies.  Finally we can burn fossil fuels without worry again!

Weird, almost like Someone cut the funding to programs that control livestock parasites in South America. Programs specifically made to prevent the spread of said parasites to the US. There couldn't possibly be a connection.

Jon1166 Apr 15, 2026 +93
If only we hadn't cut funding for efforts to mitigate the spread of the New World Screwworm... [https://www.tsln.com/news/us-terminates-funding-for-fao-animal-disease-emergencies/](https://www.tsln.com/news/us-terminates-funding-for-fao-animal-disease-emergencies/)

I think a lot of people in the USA don't understand just how crazy nature can get, and how much we've "tamed" it in the US through active efforts.  They're about to learn...

Gee, I hope the ongoing global shift in climate doesn't cause weird parasites and bugs to suddenly have whole new environments to live in!

Currently in America there is an invasion of South American (somewhere around Brazil) fire ants which are 100x worse than native North American fire ants. They are essentially replacing them. The only thing stopping them from moving westward across the US is they can’t handle the cold of the mountains. Just one really warm season and the west coast of the US will have fire ants which leave huge blisters with every single bite.
38
AwesomeWhiteDude Apr 15, 2026 +7
I mean…huge blisters is a bit of an overstatement. That species doesn’t need any more fear mongering attached to it.

americansteel Apr 15, 2026 +347
This is our own fault as I understand. The U.S. used to stop the spread of the screwworm by distributing sterilized worms at a choke point between North and South America. Then DOGE decided that there was no more money for this. Thanks guys

While I'm usually more than happy to blame DOGE for anything and everything they've touched, the current outbreak that's been ongoing in Mexico dates back to the fall of 2024. I think it started south of Mexico though iirc. US department of Agriculture lost something like a quarter of their workforce though due to DOGE cuts and early retirement offers... and is now  currently in a "reorganization" that farmers don't even want to see happen, which will lead to more retirements and resignations, all while dispersing operations around the US. They're also closing a ton of regional offices and have been reducing research dollars and programs. That agency (and I assume many others) are going to be fucked in the long term. They already had issues with staffing and processing BEFORE Trump. Everything is just going to get even slower and worse. A huge survey just came out on Monday from the American Farm Bureau showing only 6% of farmers say they're better off than a year ago. SIX PERCENT. This is Trump's bread and butter base and they've been getting absolutely fucked by him his entire second term. If only there was a way to know Trump was gonna be a disaster though....

There it is. There it f****** is. The plague I called back when Trump canceled the grant for Screwworm sterilization years ago. We'd gotten SO close to eradicating them and one stupid, uneducated a****** comes in like a wrecking ball. Well, the joke's on you conservative cattle ranchers. You get to watch parasitic infections race through your herds faster than a wildfire just like your great grandpappies did, only at least they can say they didn't know the cause. You idiots f****** VOTED for it.

Probst54 Apr 15, 2026 +12
I was part of the screw worm eradication project in the middle 1980s. We pushed the screw worms all the way to the Guatemalan border. Don't tell me it's coming back.

This is most likely just a standard bacterial infection with a secondary maggot infection. There have been zero cases in the US so far and the surveillance would most likely pick that up.

Kurzgesagt has a super informative [video](https://youtu.be/zxq60I5RSW8?si=i3arnNfLJYnYc4_0) breaking down this issue. We had a pretty good system for containment until [*somebody*](https://www.agri-pulse.com/articles/22636-bird-flu-screwworm-monitoring-among-foreign-aid-programs-killed-by-trump) stepped in and stopped funding the program. Shocker.

Don't worry, I'm sure RFK will got on Joe Rogan and talk about how it's actually healthy and beneficial to use these worms to cleanse toxins or some shit.

MikeSteamer Apr 15, 2026 +27
The easiest way to fix this problem is to use the SNE/HNE method. Shut down the Texas Dept. of Agriculture as well as the Federal Dept. of Agriculture thus See No Evil/Hear No Evil - everything is fine and it will be the Democrats faultp

A reminder to anyone not in the know, the US had a program that mitigated the spread of this parasite by dropping sterilized screwworms that kept populations at bay. DOGE cut the funding to this program in a penny wise pounds foolish incompetence.

There's a really huge one we've detected in the D.C. area. Eats McDonald's a lot. And is, right now, screwing millions of people on a daily basis.

A reminder: this was an entirely preventable thing that we had been successfully fighting off since the 1960s. It's native to the US, but we pushed it back to South America thanks for the foreign aid that Trump and Elon got rid of. This is going to wreck havoc on cattle, and drive up the cost of beef. For not f****** reason.

Hey Australia, about that USA beef you just allowed to be imported. Maybe time to walk it back?
