Intergenerational trauma. And most of it will go unnoticed because the media will ignore it, while the survivors (along with their descendants) won’t feel safe enough to talk about it. Their silence will render their suffering invisible. Looking back at Japanese American incarceration camps during WWII, we can see why: > After the war, Japanese Americans faced the daunting task of re-entering society and rebuilding their lives, uncertain of the level of anti-Japanese sentiments they would encounter. > Some distanced themselves from anyone or anything related to Japan (psychological identification with the aggressor). Their shattered identities, tensions about assimilation, and silence resembled that of Holocaust survivors. > Many attempted to blend into the mainstream, prove themselves, and minimize associations with Japan. This also affected their children. Sansei interviewees reported an "inherited" need to become "super" American and downplay their Japanese identity and culture, "not rock the boat" to avoid drawing attention to themselves, and prove their worth to society through high achievement and hard work. > Meanwhile, their parents fell victim to a kind of "social amnesia," suppressing unpleasant memories and feelings. > Minimal attention in textbooks/the media suggested that Japanese Americans were a "model minority" who had risen from prejudice with no obvious lasting negative effects of the incarceration, but this was an illusion. > Their silence and efforts to "prove" themselves to a home country that unjustly imprisoned them took a critical toll. Survivors were plagued by prevalent psychosomatic disorders, peptic ulcers, and depression, which may have stemmed from the repression of their experiences. > Whether due to suppression or the trauma itself, the physical effects were severe. Former incarcerees were more than twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease, and twice as likely to die before the age of 60. One interviewee said: > *”I think that many Nisei have died early of various diseases. (My father included. He had cancer at 40 and died at 54.) I really strongly believe that the trauma of incarceration had a physiological effect on them. Most of my Japanese American friends' fathers have died before the age of 60.”* > There were critical intergenerational impacts for the children. Family avoidance of what the parents had endured created a "conspiracy of silence" observed in trauma survivor groups across the world that created a significant gap in the Sansei's personal history and identity development. > Children of survivors grew up hearing about the incarceration only in indirect or cryptic ways. Parents often mentioned it as a vague and general reference point in time using phrases such as "before camp" and "after camp," or shared positive or humorous memories. > From the Nisei's perspective, the lack of communication reflected an attempt to circumvent burdening their children with knowledge about what had happened. Small government has *always* been a dog whistle for allowing communities to run out the unfavorables. I.E. lynchings.  That is all it has ever been.  They've just had good branding which captures those annoyed with anything government related.

Republicans never get to hide behind the fiscal responsibility and small government bullshit ever again. It was always horseshit, but especially after Trump and Bush Jr.

The whole thing becomes really simply once you realize that conservatives don't believe these people have souls.
