They paid compasation to Korean government twice in exchange for their agreement on not bringing this up "unnecessarily." But the money was largely stolen by fraud in the korean government. They also dissolved the foundation they built and confisticatethe funds and subverted the agreement. Obviously Japan does not like these.

Can't deny history by writing a check.
1
FederalAgent17 Apr 10, 2026 +1
What does this statue have to do with the supposed Korean fraud? Japan’s govt should get over itself and be glad it was left in tact as a nation and be allowed to prosper in spite of being a hotly contested geopolitical area.
1
DateMasamusubi Apr 10, 2026 +1
Read the actual details. The govt was not supposed to. But this is a civic group and not party to any agreement.
1

Always has been. They absolutely refuse to acknowledge the atrocities they committed in lead up to and in WW2.

> the Japanese ambassador, Makoto Osawa, said “needlessly stirring up interest” in the issue could become a burden not only for Japan and South Korea’s cooperation I'd say needlessly downplaying it is also a burden on relations but what do I know.

Nooooo why must you ruin this family by bringing up what Uncle Japan did to your sisters, geez that was such long time ago, get over it already ahaha can we just not dwell on such negativity and focus on peace and moving on together 🙏😙🌹😇

hey_its_drew Apr 10, 2026 +47
What's funny is c*** like this spotlights them in the worst lighting a lot more than acknowledging the history ever could, but Japan has a very strong determination to be proud of their elderly family member and ancestors, character horrors be damned. Really, many cultures do, and they could all use a healthy serving of shame.
47
PhilosophyforOne Apr 10, 2026 +1
Because it’s not about valorizing people for their character, but about propping up social hierarchies and conserving traditions.  The goal is not improvement, it’s maintenance.
1
Imaginary-Case3976 Apr 10, 2026 +1
Yea, just freaking accept it and move on and the past is the past. Them trying to rewrite history is just adding fuel to the fire. You don’t see Mongolia rewriting Genghis Kahn evil deeds or Persia with Darius or France with Napoleon or China with their numerous bad emperors. Their obsession with being publicly liked and maintaining a good image reeks of desperation and insecurity.
1
Fickle-Maintenance-1 Apr 10, 2026 +209
Hmm far-right PM who wants to change pacifist constitution and talks about “making Japan great again”. I wonder which period of Japan she thought was great and they should return to.

To an era where they can strong arm 'minnows' like NZ into covering up inconvenient memorabilias of Japan's war crimes?
49
boofadoof Apr 10, 2026 +1
And it's funny for Japan to call somebody else a minnow when the Japanese economy has been on the decline for 40 years.

70
ccs77 Apr 10, 2026 +1
Well, feel bad is pretty convenient isn't it? Qatar and Saudi holding sports event? Sportswashing! USA (slavery) holding world cup? European football leagues (colonialization, theft, exploitation)? Nah they are good.
1

The difference is Qatar and Saudi have slavery TODAY
1
BuildAnything4 Apr 10, 2026 -66
I'm German and don't regret shit.  I didn't live back then, so why would I. The only people who should have regrets are those who are committing war crimes today.  That's the Americans, Russians, and Israelis.  Germans have to clean up their mess by taking in the refugees from their wars.
-66
Eagle4317 Apr 10, 2026 +63
There's a difference between personal regret and wanting to avoid the horrors of the past. Denazification was probably the most effective anti-brainwashing campaign in human history. Japan needed something similar, but it was never really done.
63
redcomet29 Apr 10, 2026 +7
It was effective at teaching them to hate the symbol and the name but not so much recognize the factors that led to it or the ideology itself. Germans would be back on that train if you give it a new name, logo and a different target than the Jewish. I moved to Germany and a lot of them are giving off that vibe again, its just "different this time".
7
Darkfight Apr 10, 2026 +1
As someone who went to school in Germany we were taught the underlying mechanisms of fascism EXTENSIVELY. Like I obviously don't know for sure but I would guess Germany has one of if not straight up the best education about that specific topic. What we were also taught is that economic factors play a huge role in these dynamics and looking at the state of the world economy...let's say I'm not surprised fascism is rearing it's ugly head again. Then again if you compare us to our neighbors, direct and indirect, we can see that Germany is actually doing quite well in that regard. But obviously because of history everyone is looking at us specifically. But I'm not under any illusions... One bad enough economic slip (cough AI bubble cough) and a big part of the so called civilized world will go straight back to the good old ways
1
Absolute_Enema Apr 10, 2026 +1
This is happening all over the west, including in places where they would still proudly claim that they're above fascism.

It wasn't that effective obviously as the AFD is the second most popular party here in Germany now.  They even invited Musk to speak at an event shortly after he gave the Nazi salute.

Maeglin75 Apr 10, 2026 +1
Fellow German here. I think you completely misunderstand what this is about. It's not about guild. The people that are guilty are almost all dead by now. You and me are not to blame for what happened before we were born. This is about responsibility. We are not guilty of the crimes our grandparents and great-grandparents have committed, but because this is part of the history of our country and us as a people, it is our shared responsibility to never let something like that ever happen again. And for this it's important to remember. We must never forget what happened. We must honor the victims and condemn the perpetrators and also the ones that did nothing to stop it. I think the Japanese are very wrong to try to forget and deny what happened in the past of their country, because this risks that it can happen again.

thewavefixation Apr 10, 2026 -8
Kinda funny how people so concerned about war crimes around here never list entities like Sudan, Hamas, Myanmar or M23 - but the Jews always seem to make the cut.

Israel doesn't represent the Jews?? It's their homeland and all the others around the world's silence on their atrocities is deafening.

My country was part of a true genocide- for reals.   That was easy.  You just think because you can't admit your country's atrocities, nobody can do it.

if you see the background, on the purple board, there is korean written. so I would assume that this is successful diplomacy of korea to undermine Japan. Japan is busy nominating trump for noble prize when koreans are winning in NZ.
12
troller227 Apr 10, 2026 +31
New Zealand women captured by japanese were also victims of sex slavery during pacific war as well along with Dutch, Australian, France, US, British, Russia, China, Indonesia, Maleisia, Timor-Leste, Myanmmar, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Papua new Guinea, Thaliand. So it's not solely Korean thing, rly.

The image of the statute resembles more to oriental features, that is why I mentioned Korea.
4

Read the article and text under the photo. It is a similar statue. Not the one intended to be installed in New Zealand.

Yes. For a long time, many countries were poor and receiving foreign aid from Japan so historical issues were kept quiet (The Philippines recently removed its own memorial due to backroom pressure from Japan).

Same energy from family guy. I'm not seeing anything about German history between 1939 and 1945. There's a gap. Everyone was on vacation! On your left is Munich's first city hall, erected in 15... What are you talking about? Germany invaded Poland in 1939. We were invited! Punch was served! You can't ignore those years. Thomas Mann fled to America because of Naziism's hold on Germany. No, he left to manage a Dairy Queen. That's preposterous. I vill hear no more insinuations about Germans! Nothing bad happened! I don't know where you're looking but German education spends a lot of time on WW1, the interbellum and rise of the Nazi party, WW2 and Germany's role in it. Maybe not make Family Guy your source of information...
