I used to think Maher was awesome in the early 00s. I thought he was like an edgier Jon Stewart, who I also loved. I was all about that angsty atheist counter culture life and he really appealed to me.
Then I graduated high school and realized how lame Maher really is. He's contrarian just to be a contrarian. He isn't funny or insightful. But to a young teenager he was "telling the truth" against religion and government.

Other than being an atheist, Bill Maher is not the least little bit like Carlin. Carlin had a brain, empathy, and wit. Maher has none of the above. Maher is a bigot, a racist, and a misogynist. Carlin was none of the above. Carlin was a philosopher and a comedian. Maher is a drag on all thinking people.

The fact is that Maher and Carlin possess similar worldviews based on skepticism and absurdity. Certainly Carlin was a far more skilled standup but the original comparison holds. Carlin often broke with progressive orthodoxy - such as his views on environmental issues. He basically said f*** the environment whereas Bill makes the environment his primary political issue. Since I am far more educated than you are I would put Vonnegut in the same category.

Based on the fact that you didn't understand the article whatsoever, I'd be surprised if you made it more than 5 pages into a Vonnegut novel. He's not getting the award. I've actually read Slaughterhouse Five, breakfast of champions, and Sirens of Titan, all of which were very good. Cover to cover even! Carlin's jokes about the environment stem from his disdain of the human species, as exemplified by your post, not a hatred of the environment itself. I've actually read Carlin's books too. Yes, he was a writer as well! Your self-righteousness would have disgusted them both but I imagine Maher would appreciate it at least

Maher really lost it around Covid during Trump 1.0 before that I did like him quite a bit. Saw one of his shows and he literally just said lines from the show verbatim then chastised the audience for not laughing. Very lazy.

I'm a pretty big Bill Maher fan. While I don't always agree with him (and I think it's okay to disagree with folks), I find myself agreeing with him way more often than not. I agree that he can come off as smug and, when you disagree with him, I can see how unlikable he could seem. That said, I watch his show regularly and appreciate his stance on current events. (Your downvotes don't hurt me).
But...I was always surprised that he is considered a *comedian.* I love Bill Maher the Political Commentator. I appreciate Bill Maher the writer/editorialist (which his final New Rule segment is). But I've never really understood Bill Maher the comedian. His jokes are usually Tonight-Show-Leno-level obvious and hacky. The 'comedy' bit that gets shoehorned in the middle of the panel discussion of his show is usually a groaner.

I’ve seen his standup a few times and generally enjoy it. Though I did not enjoy the special he did around 2016 just before Trump was elected the first time—it was just too depressing (though I understand why).
That said, the bit in the middle of the show is always an eye-roll.
