At this point in the movie I still wasn’t sure what genre it even was. This scene totally scared me because I was sure it was about to turn full blown horror.

The biggest laugh of the film was when he just says, "NOPE" and starts backing away.

Yeah, I remember being on the edge of my seat in the theater. Particularly love the sound design in this scene.

He knew exactly what we were expecting to see from this movie and at the end of this scene he made it clear it ain't that kinda movie. Masterclass in subverting expectations

In the same vein, I was very disappointed in NOT getting a Grey-alien style Peele horror movie. Were expectations subverted? Sure, but so were Game of Thrones, doesnt always mean it was the right choice.

The theater I saw this in was our local independent theater that could barely afford to keep the lights on, much less buy modern tech, so Nope was waaayyy darker there than on the other screens I saw it on later. That meant that the scene where the first monkey suit stands up, it truly was not visible at all until it rose fully from the shadows. It was waaaaayyy creepier than when I saw it in IMAX and you could see it the whole time if you had your eye in that quadrant.
RIP tiny independent theater in my neighborhood

Aw man, at least you got to have that experience there.

Not enough horror movies do the "thing poking its head around a corner" thing. I always thought it was intensely unnerving, I wish it was used more. In fact, I can't even think of another movie that does it. The only thing I can think about is one of those faked haunted recordings from one of those slop youtube channels that I saw a few months ago but could never find again.
I remember this video spooked me a bit (sorry it’s one of those AI slop videos, I couldn’t find the original) https://m.youtube.com/shorts/ySJ7-kyXdck

It's been quite a long time since I've seen it, I want to say Signs did something kinda similar?

Nope was a very brilliant concept. Some of the comments suggest they were let down from their expectations, but when you realize the real antagonist of this movie is a f****** screen, and the real horror is our obsession with spectacle, the brilliance sets in.

up until this point i thought Peele was essentially doing his Signs which, initially, is what i wanted (i love Signs). he was doing it really well too. once this scene ended i realized i was not getting a "new" Signs but something else entirely.
im so glad he did not go in that direction despite that being what i wanted. Nope is probably in my top 5 of the last ten years. i am still hunting for an alien movie that captures what i enjoyed so much about Signs though.

A big part of Signs that just does it for me is the score. I think it adds so much to the tone of the movie.
Straight out of the gates with opening title scene, just a fantastic score that set the movie up.

You should check out The Vast of Night. It’s not a big movie like signs but it is a great ufo movie.

the first 2/3's of that movie i thought were incredible, it captured a very specific after school event vibe so well. lost me in the end but would still say it was very good.

I watched this movie tripping my ass off. What an awesome ride that was.
Now, I sometimes look at the sky and clouds to see if I notice something *off*. I truly think some alien ships just hover over us sometimes.

This scene has more tension it that most horror films…just the way it’s filmed just highlights Peele’s ability as a director so impressive

This scene is suuuuch an absolute flex. Peele showing he can do something super scary if he wants to.

I remember first seeing this in the theater and just how many different directions he could’ve taken the movie from this scene on then it’s just some people f****** around then I was just like yeah I guess bro….

Yeah after this is where the movie lost me. The way this was shot was so f****** unsettling. The giant CGI alien was just boring to me.

That's wild. The plot of the movie literally involves not looking at it. It is the opposite of spectacle. If the thrilling nature of characters being pursued by a foreign animal that killed the main characters father is boring to you... idk man.

I meant visually. Obviously the stakes are higher in the scenes with “jean jacket” because, well, it’s actually an alien trying to kill the characters. I mean from a filmmaking standpoint, this scene was a lot more well done than the ones with the real alien.

I think the house scene, all the brief shots of it flying in the night or through the clouds hit hard.

I mean I don’t think Jean Jacket was actually supposed to be an alien ultimately, but rather an undiscovered cryptid that inspired both the UFO and >!angel!< legends (the behind-the-scenes went into what its unfurled design was based on, hence the Bible quotes all through the film, and why it was given a majestic vibe). Different generations looking to the sky expecting knowledge, something from beyond, but getting nothing but an animal looking for food. That part does have a sense of religious horror once one picks up on what Jean Jacket is meant to be.
The director also expressed interest in a potential sequel or prequel with multiple Jean Jackets.

I get that. I’m just saying none of that was compelling to me and didn’t freak me out like the barn scene did from a filmmaking standpoint. Just didn’t hit for me

The Dead Meat podcast described this as "Pelle showing off he *could* do this version of an alien movie if he wanted to" and I gotta agree
