Haven’t they been making this claim for years?
1018
Dull-Rutabaga8689 Mar 29, 2026 +507
Its already well known they have ballistic missiles that can hit US west coast.
507
Pale_Change_666 Mar 29, 2026 +192
Yup Hwasong-19 has a range of 15,000km
192
BoBSMITHtheBR Mar 29, 2026 +185
If it can hit the west coast it’s not much more to hit the east coast. It doesn’t have to traverse the length of the US from west to east because it’s closer to fire north and travel across the arctic and then just travel south.
185
Food_Goblin Mar 30, 2026 +7
Don't give them any ideas! The last thing I need is one landing in Canada on the way...
7
SsurebreC Mar 29, 2026 +53
So they claim but there's only been one test, in 2024, which flew for a thousand kilometers.
53
TachiH Mar 29, 2026 +155
You don't fire the distance for tests. Even the US doesn't. You just fire it higher and do the maths to work out what max range is. To test max range you would be flying over countries you don't want to mistake the test for the end of the world.
155
Briguy_fieri Mar 30, 2026 +89
This comment only drives home there's people so much smarter than me. Because I would absolutely have just run the full distance test
89
Dull-Rutabaga8689 Mar 30, 2026 +59
Test firing a missile over enemy territory is a great way to start a war. The safe way to test a ballistic missile is shooting it high and/or into the pacific ocean. When you get sophisticated enough, you frame it as a scientific or humanitarian effort , placing people on the moon or into orbit. When I reality, its a demonstration of your capability to place a missile anywhere on earth.
59
orangeyougladiator Mar 30, 2026 +1
I mean as long as you make everyone aware missile tests over enemy territory are fine and happens much more often than you think
1
LickNipMcSkip Mar 30, 2026 +19
To be clear, countries *do* do the distance test, including North Korea, just not for ICBMs. One of the things that they potentially gain from their friendship with Russia is access to a missile range to actually put theory into practice with their IRBMs/MRBMs that the DPRK is just too thin for. That way, they aren't just firing the same short range missiles at the same island or the Sea of Japan every few months. Also, now they just shoot a bunch of their shorter range stuff at Ukrainians instead. Less great for the ROK, that their Northern neighbors are getting real life experience on the systems pointed South
19
Newyew22 Mar 30, 2026 +7
Same, but in our defense, it literally is rocket science.
7
racso1518 Mar 30, 2026 +2
If you did that you would have 50 US nukes obliterating the whole nation within 10 minutes
2
Hodr Mar 30, 2026 +7
I'm no geography scientist but I can look at a globe. Since they already shoot over South Korea regularly, after that there's open ocean for 5000km until Papua New Guinea. If they can turn it even just a couple of degrees there's open ocean all the way to the south pole. Seems like plenty of room to do a real test/demonstration.
7
Pale_Change_666 Mar 29, 2026 +8
The test had 1000 km of range, and 7700km of altitude or apolgee( how far it traveled vertically).
8
Stunning_Mast2001 Mar 30, 2026 +8
I think we’re seeing in Iran, militaries tends to wildly overstate their capabilities
8
Atmacrush Mar 30, 2026 +11
Well, Iran has managed to reach Diego Garcia air base with two ballistic missiles, which is 4,000km away from Iran. While one was shot down and the other went dud, the attacks traveled 4,000km. Iran has demonstrated that they can reach the whole Europe. It may not be accurate, but raining a bunch of these can do massive AoE damage to a country.
11
Woozah77 Mar 30, 2026 +13
Noooo you didn't just use AoE in a sentence about real life.
13
More_Bigger Mar 30, 2026 +7
They should hit my house then before I gotta go to work tomorrow
7
ghosttrainhobo Mar 30, 2026 +35
If NK can put a satellite into orbit, then they can out a warhead on that rocket and have it hit America. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malligyong-1
35
orangeyougladiator Mar 30, 2026 +5
Not quite. It’s not a simple ballistic that just falls to the ground, it has to escape orbit at the right position at 2500mph+ and then readjust for its target while withstanding the heat
5
DragonWhsiperer Mar 30, 2026 +1
An ICBM, a "ballistic" missile is only powered in the Boost phase. The midphase and re-entry are are unpowered. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intercontinental_ballistic_missile
1
tigersharkwushen_ Mar 30, 2026 +4
You don't need to readjust. That's the main feature of ballistic missiles.

Do north koreans even know there is a war in Iran?
17
hawkseye17 Mar 30, 2026 +19
Probably, North Korea is allied with Iran so they could probably use this war as a way of going "look how bad the US is"
19

Which wouldn't be all that false now would it...

7

No it wouldn’t, because they have nuclear weapons they’ll drop on the South instantly
7
superduperlongdong Mar 29, 2026 +4
I don’t think he means the invasion 😆
4
nekonight Mar 29, 2026 +41
Japan will never attack the US was a lot of the mainstream thinking before December 1941 too. Enough so that when the US diplomats sent a message to Washington that an attack is likely imminent it was ignored. The point is never say it wouldn't happen.
41
External-Plastic-154 Mar 29, 2026 +12
In fact, North Korea and the United States aren’t just simple enemies. If anything, the more North Korea maintains that kind of tension, the more it can work in the United States’ favor.
12
Cr4shK00l Mar 30, 2026 +5
That's an outrageous statement to make without even bothering to explain shit
5
External-Plastic-154 Mar 30, 2026 +2
Considering North Korea’s poor military capability and weak economy, if it didn’t even have nuclear weapons, the likelihood of it becoming a satellite state of China would have been quite high.
2
ConsiderationSea1347 Mar 29, 2026 +12
Japan had a comparable military to the United States in the 1940s.
12
nekonight Mar 30, 2026 +11
Not really. US navy was significantly larger and the shipbuilding was already running high due to the war in europe which is why the pearl harbour attack was planned in the first place. The US army was smaller than Japanese army and but had better adapted to new tech that emerged in the european front and was already adopting changes that would allow the US to mobilize quickly. Thats why Yamamoto was so against the attack because it was doomed if it didnt knocked out the US navy immediately.
11
ConsiderationSea1347 Mar 30, 2026 +3
Interesting. I was always taught Yamamoto was referring to the industrial power of the US allowing it to prop up and sustain a war engine that would devastate Japan even if Pearl Harbor was successful. Which is also what most of “the internet” says.
3
hjadams123 Mar 29, 2026 +6
Yeah, Japan did not know we were going to develop a nuclear bomb and then actually use it once it was ready. It's a different ballgame today, there are no winners in a nuclear strike. Just a lot of dead people on both sides.
6
SirBulbasaur13 Mar 30, 2026 +10
And even without the bomb, Japan *knew* the couldn’t win. Their entire plan was to deal a huge blow to the US early, dig in on their conquered territory and hope the attrition from the lost Americans trying the reclaim that territory pushed the American public to demand the war stops. There was no “beating” the US in a conventional sense, no Axis power had even the slightest plan or intention of invading.
10
Ecthelion30 Mar 30, 2026 +2
They wont attack by themselves if they do it. If Russia decides to do it they will attack as well.
2
Nelrith Mar 30, 2026 +1
I agreed, once. It doesn’t seem too far-fetched anymore.
1
LucentG Mar 30, 2026 +39
Here's my wild theory: I really think North Korea's only job is to threaten the US, secretly at the behest of China. This is China's way of just making the US paranoid and continue to invest in its military while China invests in its industry & people.
39
stealyourideas Mar 30, 2026 +8
Or at the behest of Russia
8

3

And short sighted fools wanted Iran to have this option.
3
PRSHZ Mar 30, 2026 +8
I am horrendous in the mathematics department, but as far as I’m concerned, wouldn’t a missile that can travel such a distance, require a very large tank to carry all that fuel thus making it slower and easier to target by u.s. air defense systems long before they even arrive? Also wouldn’t such a propulsion system make it stick out like a nail to satellite systems that have thermal imaging?
8
Skunkies Mar 30, 2026 +11
they typically go into space and then free fall with adjustment.
11
Kind_Conclusion1911 Mar 30, 2026 +10
Only in boost phase. Once it reaches cruise speed the engine shuts off and it practically goes dark. We can measure time to impact based on assumed trajectory but once the rocket exhaust cuts it’s a fuckin ghost.
10
Reversi8 Mar 30, 2026 +1
It’s basically just a rocket going to space, but instead of having enough energy to get a full orbit, it just burns enough to get to the target, so it drops the rockets early on and you just have the reentry vehicle flying through space and eventually reentering. Once it’s in space it’s hard to hit because it’s 100s of kilometers high, and once it reenters it’s basically impossible because it’s moving so fast. Modern MIRVs will also split the warheads while it’s moving so they can hit different targets and also deploy decoy warheads.
