It's not that weird in the context of history, the reason NK has a famine in the 1990s was loss of food imports from former Soviet Union and the only reason North Korea exists is because of the SU I sometimes wonder if Russian government officials get nostalgic for the Communist days when visiting NK

More China than the USSR, the former intervened militarily during the Korean War to prevent UN forces from sweeping all the way up the peninsula.

The ONLY reason is SU? Bahahahahahahahahah oh you sweet summer china.. I mean child

The only reason SK exists is because of the US* Kim Il Sung was already a popular anti Japanese imperialist figure at the time among the people, the southern fascist government was mostly made up of leftovers of Japanese imperialism and propped up by US military. Of course the USSR did also intervene on North Korea's behalf, but without any foreign intervention it's much more likely that Kim Il Sung would have unified the peninsula

And the war was fought mostly between US forces and Korean ones, at least until China intervened (which was caused entirely by US forces approaching a red line that China had set). If America doesn't join in, it's a pretty short conflict, if one at all. Kim was more popular and more organized. But America wouldn't allow that, and so Korea remains split to this day

That's actually incorrect. Kim Il-sung was an anti-Japanese partisan sent by the Soviet Union, posing as a general (a legendary figure combining several famous figures) who was well-known in the anti-Japanese movement. edit:If you're not familiar with it, look up Kim Kyeong-Cheon. edit 2:Quoted from South Korea's public broadcaster KBS. There is much debate as to who Kim Il-sung really was. The traditional cult of personality surrounding Kim makes one hesitant to follow North Korea's allegations at face value. Particularly, while one can track Kim Il-sung’s history after he returned to North Korea, his earlier years are shrouded in obscurity. At the heart of the debate lies the issue of whether Kim Sung-ju is the same person as the Kim Il-sung who we know as having ruled North Korea. This is a sensitive issue, as it touches on his history of resistance against the Japanese. Kim’s supposed history as an anti-Japan leader played a vital role in justifying his initial rise to power in North Korea. One frequently-mentioned achievement is the 1937 Bocheon-bo Battle, where Kim supposedly led resistance forces to victory over a heavily fortified Japanese police force. The event was recorded as one that gave hope to the Koreans and terror to the Japanese colonialists. Kim’s public debut as a resistance hero was crafted in 1946 by the Soviet Commander in North Korea, Romanenko. The man that Romanenko introduced to the people was ‘Kim Il-sung’, not ‘Kim Sung-ju’. Therefore, some claim that ‘Kim Il-sung’ was an alias used by Kim Sung-ju for his resistance activities, while others believe that Kim Sung-ju had made fraudulent use of the name of the resistance hero Kim Il-sung.

Don't treat things you don't know about as baseless conspiracy theories. The legendary Kim Jong-un is said to have graduated from a Japanese military academy and participated in the anti-Japanese movement, but there is no such fact about Kim Il-sung. He was an anti-Japanese partisan in northeastern China and also spent time in the Soviet Union. Kim Jong-il was born while he was in the Soviet Union, and he also has a Russian name.

North Korea, Russia, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, and China have all been loose allies since at least 1980. Syria was pretty close to them all as well before Assad was overthrown.

Does the average North Korean even know what Russia and Ukraine are?

Shiplord13 1 day ago +118
They know Russia is an ally of theirs and Ukraine is probably described by the North Korean government as some breakaway state of Russia that has chosen to side with North Korea and Russia's shared enemies of the U.S., EU, South Korea and Japan. Or know something insane like that.

That isn't a particularly insane take although certainly one sided. But to pretend that NATO hasn't been pushing towards Russia for some time is dishonest (as well as encircling plenty of other nations, China included). Putin made it pretty clear that that was a hard line for Russia, so although i don't condone the war, NATO could have totally seen this coming and therefore I can only conclude that NATO chose to sacrifice countless Ukrainian lives for its own ambitions
-44
masterwolfe 1 day ago +30
To pretend or present like NATO extending its protection to states on the Russian border is an act of aggression against Russia is more dishonest though.
30
StarFalchion 1 day ago +20
And what? NATO is a defensive alliance if putin didnt have any ideas of invading countries around russian borders he wouldnt care about NATO - Switzerland doesnt care that NATO surounded it + NATO is a defensive alliance wdym ambitions what does it stand to benefit from protecting other nations. Russia is the ambitous nation that stills sees itself as a high tier super power not the low tier super power it is today so it demands it gets treated like one and has temper tantrums like invading Ukraine when its not
20
EpilepticPuberty 1 day ago +7
Damn, NATO had the chance to sacrifice countless Baltic lives instead. Now NATO has to take on the burden of not sacrificing Finish and Swedish lives.
7
TheLividPaper 23 hr ago +5
It's an insane take. These countries can willingly join NATO if they wish, and if they are accepted by every NATO member. The main factor that pushes countries to apply is because Russia keeps invading its neighbours. I do not understand this take, we legitimately lived through this, together. Russia invaded Ukraine, which resulted in Finland and Sweden joining the alliance. This isn't something that's up for interpretation, we literally witnessed the cause-and-effect. Cause: Russia launches its full scale invasion of Ukraine Effect: Finland and Sweden join NATO

Sometimes I like to watch this video to not fall for Russian propaganda like you did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjU-ve4Pn4k

Xynical_DOT 1 day ago +5
No what’s become clear is that putin is an EU spy who, realizing that NATO had become weak and was losing its purpose, concocted a scheme to renew the strength of the alliance and prepare the west for future conflict through a proxy war. He was also smart enough to realize that to ensure Russia could not succeed in the future, it needed to be severe enough to scare the Nordic countries into joining nato, ensuring that Russia would be encircled in the next war.

...yes? North Koreans are still educated, they have schools and universities, it's not like the average North Korean thinks the world ends at their border, like the flat earthers think there's a wall of ice surrounding Earth.

Fantastic-Tomato-245 1 day ago +23
You would think flat earthers who believe in an ice wall would be absolutely freaking the f*** out about the ice caps melting and trying to stop it. Like what do they believe will happen when this supposed ice ring melts?

They probably know where Ukraine is as a result of their old SSR maps but we've found out a lot of these North Korean troops were actually killed because they simply don't grasp modern warfare Per South Korea's spy agency it seems North Korea suffered a high number of troop losses because their troops lacked an understanding of what drones were. It apparently took over 50+ NK troops dying in a single attack for them to even consider setting up an observation post to have some guy watch out for the weird things in the sky which crash and explode
3
Visual_Collapse 1 day ago +15
That's reason why NK sent there troops. To get actual experience in modern warfare. I'm surprised that China didn't do that as well.
15
Dzugavili 17 hr ago
I don't think China and Russia are allies, so much as Russia is a customer who can test hardware.
0
Vallkyrie 21 hr ago +1
There were tons of vids uploaded to /combatfootage showing NK troops absolutely terrified of drones, recorded from the drone's perspective. Many would panic and blindly fire randomly at them, sometimes hitting their own troops.

A museum dedicated to the troops killed in Ukraine which Russia and Vatniks denied were ever in Ukraine. When even North Korea can seemingly tell the truth compared to the dictators of the world super powers of the US and Russia we should be terrified

The videos of this on the combat footage sub suggest these guys got wrecked and accomplished virtually nothing. A few of the smartest/lucky ones surrendered.

They're all humans bro. We attacked Palestine, Iran, and Gaza too but yet mourn our fallen that served in these campaigns. It's only fair we mourn theirs even if they're not on our team. Even China mourns Indian soldiers and they even give them a proper funeral if they died on the Chinese side during border clashes
