King Harald and Queen Sonja should be the last ones. King Harald has been a kind king and has as far as we know no history of trouble or done any illegal shit, and queen Sonja has been alright as queen. When i heard Haakon and Mette-Marit on radio and how Haakon defended Mette-Marit in everything i felt disgusted that he is going to inherit a royal title with her as a queen beside him. Had this been done by any of us we would lose our jobs and maybe be put in jail.

Norway has a perfectly functional apparatus of state without the monarch though, right? A monarch, even neutered and entirely symbolic is still a sign of a bygone age. In an ideal society nobody would be elevated to fame or fortune through blood alone.
Giving monarchy/royals a break sort of defeats those ideals and leads to abuse like we see here; where she can be associated with a known child rapist and still get to do news articles crying about how she's a victim instead of being put in prison

Note: shes crown-princess by marriage and said oldest son is from a previous relationship and thus not in the line of succession so no worries about him becoming King.
From what I recall having looked into this a while back, she is very unpopular with Norwegians, meanwhile her husband is decently popular with the main complaint being hes married to her. Both of the royal kids are also generally well regarded. Kinda an interesting situation overall where if the Norwegian Monarchy can make it to Princess Ingrid I think itll last a decent while longer, but Im not sure it makes it to her

>Høiby has admitted some of the lesser offences, and after his arrest admitted physical abuse and destroying objects. The indictment alleges he tore down a chandelier, threw a knife at the wall and shattered a mirror, calling the woman words such as w****.
>The four r*** charges date from 2018, at his parents' official residence on the Skaugum estate outside Oslo, to November 2024, after his initial arrest. One of the four, dating back to 2023, involves intercourse while the woman was asleep. The other three also involve sexual assault while the women were incapacitated, which also counts as r*** in Norway.

If the monarchy is to end in Norway the constitution has to change. There was a "vote" last year in the Norwegian parliament about if there even should be put into motion an abolishment of the monarchy, but it was voted down. The support for monarchy in Norway is going down, it was at 60% this year from 74% in 2024. It will be interesting to see what happens after king Harald dies and how it will affect the support. Haakons daughter princess Ingrid Alexandra enjoys lots of support by the people, she is very charismatic.

There seems to be a wave of Republican sentiment at the minute. I'm of the opinion that foreign agents are influencing this by manipulating online communities to destabilise the governments. King Harald absolutely provides value to Norway. In practical terms he's our most important diplomat.
As for abolishing the monarchy, yes it can be done. It requires changing the constitution, which requires 2/3 majority in the parliament across two parliament periods, if I'm not mistaken. It has been suggested several times before but never been close to going through.

This is NOT meant as a defense of anyone, I’m just curious: if it’s taken THIS MUCH global pressure and this much time just to get any sort of movement on this case, what exactly should she have been expected to “do about” what she knew, besides distance herself? Again, I’m absolutely not defending anyone, and I’m also not giving you attitude. It just really seems like the guy was astonishingly influential, and because the tales are so gruesome and horrific they sound like fiction, it’s hard to imagine what she realistically could have done, beyond distancing herself.
Honestly, the grim nature of the situation is what hits me harder than one woman’s refusal to try to be a superhero about it. Sometimes walking away is the only path to relative redemption.

It's possible to have a bad feeling about someone or something and still not really know anything/have anything of substance to back it up. Hard to "do anything about it" in those situations but you still might not want to be involved with that person further.
That said, this apology that's not naming the close acquaintance she knew him through and doesn't give any actual explanation of what the uneasy "situation" she encountered was, isn't really sufficient to give that kind of a charitable read of things.
16
erlendigMar 20, 2026

Yeah, there is also no evidence of her knowing enough to have anything big to expose. The main scandal is that she seems to have been flirting or possibly cheating with Epstein, and that she didn't distance herself earlier when (likely) knowing that he was accused of bad things. She admitted in yesterdays interview that she witnessed Epstein blackmailing someone, and that he had done something that made her feel uncomfortable, but I don't believe that she witnessed any of the trafficking, sexual crimes or worse activities.

If you're talking about the reported end of their friendship in 2014, I'm convinced that's not true, there's an email that mentions someone meeting Epstein and "Mette" in January of 2018, and another from Epstein in 2019 asking someone if they told someone else they knew "Mette" (and they sent a response saying they became friends with the "royal crown princess of Norway"). And several other casual mentions of the name "Mette". There just aren't any emails exchanged between them after 2014.
Now, this "Mette" person he met in 2018 and mentioned several other times after 2014 could've been anyone I guess, but I don't personally know about any other "Mette" that has ties to Epstein, and I'm not exactly sure I believe someone who says she knew nothing about him despite googling him and seemingly commenting on the results of his trial from 2008 with a smiley face at the start of their friendship in 2011.

There needs to be a point, when powerful people say things like this, that we reply “ok, you’re too dumb and irresponsible to have money or power. We are going to confiscate everything you have and you will live out your days in poverty in public housing (hopefully you worked to improve that before today).”

I think its crazy how literally *none* of the high status people who had links to Epstein had any clue he was such a disgusting monster. Like, they were all friends with him, and all kept their relationships very secretive, but not a single one of them knew the type of guy he actually was.
What are the odds! 🤷♂️

Im tired of all these mealy mouthed apologies from billionaires. It’s clear they don’t care beyond their reputation damage otherwise they’d be doing things like making massive donations to the legal teams for victims. But we see none of that, so it’s clear to me they don’t give one flying flip about anyone but themselves.

A lot of people on here won't remember this, but back in 2004, the current King Harald's late sister Princess Ragnhild warned that Prince Haakon was making a huge mistake in marrying Mette Marit, and even said she hoped she'd be dead before Haakon and Mette Marit would be on the throne (she got her wish when she died in 2012). Interestingly, Ragnhild also predicted Mette Marit's son from a previous relationship Marius would become an issue down the road. Looks like she was right on both counts.
Makes you wonder if King Harald and Queen Sonja are wishing they had listened to Ragnhild.

She knew he was blackmailing people. Her son was raised in an entitled environment, likely with an incredible number of bad influences.
People in positions like these live very detached from reality, feeling they have no one to connect with and no privacy anywhere on earth. I doubt she genuinely felt the autonomy others believe she has. It’s almost a given for people with this level of influence to believe they have no agency, outside of their positions.
Advisors, managers, and “trusted contacts” can and do manipulate them in these views and then public backlash makes it harder to fight against them.
Pulmonary fibrosis can be debilitating, impacting her memory, attention, executive functioning, and ability to process information.
I’d be curious to know how many people in her class feel exactly the same, have no idea how to address the public about it, and are being heavily coached by those who “know better.”
All of this is to say: we have no real idea what JE and his network were doing to people with this level of power to keep them quiet.
May she find the strength to say more about what she knows to the people who can make a difference with power she doesn’t believe she has.

Just another reason why we in Europe need to get over having hereditary heads of state. Even if the actual person in the job and the actual heir have been properly brainwashed to behave, it's clear their family often do not.
Personally, I think the Swiss have the right idea in simply not having a "head of state" at all and a system that rotates people though high office before they get a chance to develop enough cult of personality to try to change the system.

The simple and basic truth is that she came from a difficult early life and saw a chance to live the life of a jetsetter. She took that chance and went with it. Passionately. So yeah. She's not fit to be queen of my country, in my opinion. You're supposed to have some level of moral clarity to adequately perform that function.
Ad notam: Not widely covered these days is the fact that her closest family went on a $25K/week Mediterranean cruise on Terry Taylor's yacht "Mia Elise" back in 2015. They paid nothing for this vacation. The reclusive billionaire Taylor is reportedly closely linked to Epstein as per the Epstein-files. Which is not a shock as Epstein corrupted everything and everyone he came into contact with.
Much like I don't believe anything a republican says, I do not believe her remorse at all. She's afraid to come clean on her greed for material goods and living a life reserved for the 0.01%. Also the royal courts handling of this as well as the sitting king and queen is seriously lacking.
