Nuremberg (2025) - Thoughts?

Posted by wouldudoitforme

I just finished watching this. I wasn’t bored or anything, I’m very passionate about history and specifically anything to do with WWII but I did get distracted a couple of times or like zoned out idk. At first I wasn’t sure why they casted Russell Crowe cuz he looked nothing like the real Göring imo, but he did a pretty good job w the “Yes. Heil Hitler” scene, I think. The blonde guy who played the German-Jewish-American is so hot… I thought he was hot in White Lotus but he was way hotter in this one. Thoughts on the movie? Or on any of the real characters?

Russell Crowe was unexpectedly brilliant and the best part of the film. Everyone else was in a completely f****** different movie. What the hell was Rami Malek doing!? What were his directions? It's quite a melodramatic film but it's like they wanted Burn Gorman but couldn't get him so asked Malek to do his best Burn Gorman impression. One of the most inconsistent films I've ever seen. You can also just watch the actual Nuremberg trials. They're quite boring.

I actually have, and tbh I found the original trials and all the b&w documentaries to be much more entertaining than this movie. And omg u crack me up!! i LOLed at the “what the hell was Rami doing” hahaha

Yeah the actual trial footage/transcripts which show the prosecutors list various horrific crimes committed by the accused and seeing their psychopathic responses is far more affecting than this movie

Malek's character was pointless and served no purpose in this film except for the final radio rant. He was also extremely unlikeable and difficult to sympathise with. The prison commandant was absolutely correct in thinking that he was an a****** and was way to patient with him. He should have booted him much earlier. Even his great insight that helped the prosecutors was that the fanatical Nazi leader is really committed to being a Nazi. Wow, no one would have ever figured that out.

Three thoughts: Thematically it was wildly inconsistent, like the movie couldn't decide if it should be a dark comedy, courtroom drama or serious history drama. I cannot count how many times there is a scene where two characters says something along the lines, "it won't be a problem". Cut to next scene: we got a problem! XD LOL . The same movie shows actual concentration camp footages. I felt like the movie was written with the expectation the audience will be on their phones while watching the film, especially the courtoom scenes are filled with exposition via chatter among the courtroom audience, telling us what should we think: "He's got this!" "Oh boy, we're in trouble!" "What happens next?" Russel Crowe is great.

dude was absolutely unhinged in that interrogation scene, like you could see him trying to keep it together but just barely failing

It felt like I was supposed to feel bad for the f****** Nazis based on how much of an absolute weirdo a****** Rami Malek’s character was???? And I don’t think that was actually supposed to happen it’s just that character was so distractingly centered in a story where they weren’t that relevant nor good at observing. Rami Malek’s acting was also atrocious and at no point did I buy a single bit of that performance because everything he does is over the top and out of place. Russell Crowe was surprisingly better than him in every scene.   And the build up to the trial following that Supreme Court Justice only for the real big “gotcha!” moment to come from the British prosecutor who we know literally nothing about at that point was baffling. Michael Shannon did not sell any of that being purpose at all because it doesn’t seem like it was in anyway. The whole climatic scene fell totally flat and amounted to nothing to instead build up this weird secretly German Jew character reveal that isn’t believable at all.

I'm a native German speaker. The fact that they cast English natives in German roles killed the whole movie for me. Russell Crowe speaks decent German, but far from a native speaker. The surprise that the interpreter is a German jew? No he isn't, he's American. Not believable. I more knowledgeable people talk about the historic inaccuracies. And furthermore, it's hollywood overkill in a lot of scenes. Didn't like Rami Malek on this one either

The world saw Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds and US studios thought „what if we dont cast native speakers but have Americans attempt to do a German accent based on what they think a German speaking English may sound like“. To this day The Blacklist still has the worst example.

This sending me because almost none of the actors playing Germans were American???  They were all British (Triest the secret German Jew), Australian (Russel Crowe), Austrian or actually just German actors lol. One of the Germans was played by a German-American who speaks fluent German and grew up in Germany is as close as it gets.

Tarantino is the exception to the rule I fear. You can make it even worse like Ferrari

I kinda of agree with all of this. I’m American but I was bothered by the lack of any native German speakers. Or any Jews for that matter lol. Cuz there aren’t any in the entire movie! Not 1. And wow the interpreter wasn’t a native speaker either? Fully agree with the last part about Rami too.

It was a weird movie. It took on a huge topic but couldn't really commit to one angle. It didn't necessarily fail at anything it tried to be, but it wasn't coherent from start to finish. I liked it, but I would have been very confused if I didn't already know the historical background.

The big issue with the movie was that it was basically a modern fantasy of Nazis getting their comeuppance and ignores reality to achieve this. The Nazis who were hung weren't crying and pissing themselves at the gallows, as much as we wish that were true. These fuckers were fanatics, thought they were being martyred for their cause. Furthermore, the film neglects to mention that a solid chunk of these fuckers were just given prison sentences that were later commuted.

The original (1961) is legendary, and quite well done. It still holds up today. It was released just 15-16 years after the end of WWII, which explains why there was so much emotion behind the performances. Highly, highly recommended. Especially if you want to school in a state where the Holocaust isn’t taught at all.

for me it’s a 4.5/10. I don’t feel like it was a waste for time, but I wouldn’t rewatch it.

It’s by no means an awful movie but I found it mostly underwhelming and boring. Also I felt like the name of the book was a more honest representation of the plot. (I didn’t read it, but just saying). I gave it a 6.7/10. For me a 6/10 means “disappointing in some way. Sometimes but not always ‘mostly enjoyable’ ”

Haha thanks for defining the rating! Now I’m starting to rethink mine. I was thinking 4.5 but your rating sounds more accurate. Although.. 6.7 is a huge stretch for me. Too close to 7 lol

Yeah I found it helpful to write down the definitions for myself to help me be consistent with ratings. I look back and read them from time to time when I’m unsure of where a movie lies. Here’s all of them: https://imgur.com/a/Wdm4mzh And here’s how my rating breakdown looks on Letterboxd. You can see I am quite successful at avoiding movies that I’d regret watching (5/10 rating or under): https://imgur.com/a/P4L3RlK
