I’m pretty sure I saw Samus Aran’s ship leaving in the background right before Fox shows up.

Same. Thought I saw Captain Falcons ship too

Love the Pikmin appearance with their Captain Olimar rocket. Thought that was adorable.

Miyamoto loves his Pikmin so. Had to get them in there.

Yoshi is in this movie for less than 1 minute before becoming a wanted criminal.
824
cows1100 Apr 2, 2026 +257
Does he commit tax fraud though? That’s the only crime I want Yoshi committing.
257
CosmosisJones42 Apr 2, 2026 +92
I think it was T-Rax fraud.
92
Ralphie5231 Apr 2, 2026 +141
The fact that he was a full grown sentient man that could only say Yoshi like a pokemon made the parts where they ride him wierd.
141
Blue_Robin_04 Apr 2, 2026 +30
Yoshi is always portrayed as smart. He's got a ton of solo adventures at this point. What's the weird part?
30
GooseGeese01 Apr 2, 2026 +34
Bring pop My ex wanted the yoshi “brinnngpop!” Notification sound for her phone. While trying to get it on her phone we slowed it down and it totally sounds like an old guy just saying “bring pop…”

Phillyboishowdown Apr 2, 2026 +58
My boy had a nice day out in NYC and nobody questioned it
58
Ill-Muscle945 Apr 2, 2026 +814
So they made a Galaxy movie and hid Rosalina away for most of it?
814
NotTaken-username Apr 2, 2026 +413
And then gave a bigger role to a character not even from Mario at all?
413
ManateeofSteel Apr 2, 2026 +286
and the plot had almost nothing to do with Galaxy. It was closer to a Mario Odyssey adaptation that Mario Galaxy!
286
Hitman3256 Apr 2, 2026 +88
I mean, they specifically were in space and on multiple planets, with spaceships. The Odyssey worlds are just a part of that.
88
Content_Godzilla Apr 2, 2026 +47
Almost all the worlds were from Odyssey.
47
Radix2309 Apr 2, 2026 +181
Really should have just done World and saved Galaxy for the 3rd. Its a clear and easy progression. Use Daisy if you need another princess for this one. Can still use Bowser Jr in this one and escalate with galactic power to make him more a threat.
181
OceanBoulevardTunnel Apr 2, 2026 +61
I think they’re planning for Odyssey to be the third movie. And then will probably move onto other things in universe (spin off movies)
61
TheRealMe99 Apr 2, 2026 +65
There was more shit from Odyssey than Galaxy in this movie already
65
Radix2309 Apr 2, 2026 +27
I think they should have done that here, and escalated to galaxy. It is just a better progression of scale than going to space and then just back to Earth or whatever the planet is.
27
GameOfLife24 Apr 2, 2026 +94
And the paintbrush is stronger than this super powerful Rosalina that can melt stars just like a Death Star
94
NewWaysToDream Apr 2, 2026 +47
I was hoping we would get a little explains to where he got this magic brush from.
47
CrimsonEnigma Apr 2, 2026 +53
I mean, in the games, E Gadd just gives it to him for no reason.
53
Personal_Comb_6745 Apr 2, 2026 +39
I mean, the title and maybe 40% of the plot is Mario Galaxy, but it's pulling from a bunch of other games, too. The "final boss" is literally that realistic dragon from Mario Odyssey.
39
keyblader6 Apr 2, 2026 +123
She did nothing in the Galaxy game either
123
plantersxvi Apr 2, 2026 +131
Neither did Fox McCloud 😭
131
GrandEdgemaster Apr 2, 2026 +71
You have no idea how much he sacrificed in Galaxy
71
seannyd1 Apr 2, 2026 +792
This is like if my 10 year old was in his Nintendo obsessive phase and they just filmed the stream of consciousness story that poured out of his head. The animation is beautiful to behold I just don’t understand why they won’t spend a little more time creating an actual story.
792
ImminentReddits Apr 2, 2026 +343
I agree. Call me pretentious, but in a post Lego Movie world I just can’t really accept the argument that these kind of mass market IP driven kids movies have mediocre stories by definition. There is just no reason at all the Mario movies couldn’t have had emotional, engaging, well written stories. It was my biggest disappointment with the first movie and I was really hoping they’d spend more time on the writing in the sequel. Guess jokes on me for spending my money to see it opening night and contributing to the cycle lol.
343
GameOfLife24 Apr 2, 2026 +121
Illumination doesn’t hire talent. The writers for Lego movie have made their own galaxy movie that’s way better and is currently in the theaters with project Hail Mary
121
Warm_Shoulder3606 Apr 2, 2026 +81
The history of Illumination really is quite something. Their first ever movie they make a genuinely great one with original storytelling, characters that have had cultural staying power, and genuine emotional/engaging beats, and then completely and utterly checked the hell out almost immediately after and became soulless and never remotely touched that level ever again They're the maroon 5 of movie studios. One good product at the very start, and then immediate shift to bland boring and soulless
81
DBZ86 Apr 2, 2026 +34
Can kinda see that the writers got overruled. The subplot between Bowser and Bowser Jr have somewhere to go but gets shut down. The themes of sisterhood and sacrifice are right there for Peach and Rosalina but not explored much at all. Mario would have been given themes of believing in second chances and confidence to be with Peach which aren't great but again ignored. Also does seem like the great action set pieces were set in stone and the movie had to cut around them even if it didn't make sense.
34
HopelessCineromantic Apr 2, 2026 +24
One thing I kinda expected to get touched upon was Bowser and Junior connecting via art. One of Junior's two primary weapons is his paint brush, and we first see the reformed Bowser through the context of painting. In general, both of the Koopas seem to have artistic talents, not only in painting, but in theater craft for Bowser and engineering for Junior. Maybe Bowser tries to redirect his son by having them paint together, but Junior's ability to manifest what he paints and Bowser's rage and resentment pair up to make him help his son.
24
robotortoise Apr 2, 2026 +21
See, it's funny you say that because the writer for this movie actually wrote on the The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part...
21
jessehechtcreative Apr 2, 2026 +29
That movie was kinda the same as this one, with constant gags instead of references, it turned out better.
29
Hokuboku Apr 2, 2026 +11
I just watched Hoppers. Fantastic animation, great story. Kids movies that appeal to all ages are not a thing of the past and don't need to be
11
BritishHobo Apr 2, 2026 +72
It makes me think of the filibuster from Parks and Recreation where Patton Oswalt just talks for ten minutes straight about a Star Wars movie where more and more Marvel characters keep turning up
72
actionparkranger Apr 2, 2026 +23
Pretty much describes the 1st movie, too,

benderlax Apr 2, 2026 +593
Maybe next movie Wario and Waluigi will appear
593
Able_Advertising_371 Apr 2, 2026 +404
They need villains. I’ll be shocked if they don’t show up. Bowser is getting redundant and his character was all over the place
404
sonicgamer42 Apr 2, 2026 +193
There's a reason why whenever Mario actually does try telling a story (RPGs) Bowser is usually kicked to the curb by a bigger more intimidating presence.
193
Toriyosh Apr 2, 2026 +79
clearly this means the third movie will be The Super Mario RPG Movie featuring Geno
79
Radix2309 Apr 2, 2026 +38
They can just go Paper Mario or similar and give him a massive power up.
38
HopelessCineromantic Apr 2, 2026 +87
>his character was all over the place Kinda fits him to be honest. One day he's trying to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, the next he's entering a golf tournament with Mario and Peach. I think this is part of the charm of the games these movies will never really get. The games don't have to care about continuity or consistent characterization. They can be whatever is needed for the given game, and nobody will bat an eye. A movie franchise demands more consistency, and so it's going to suffer when the movie tries to have characters like Bowser and Luigi, characters that change the most from game to game, express that same elasticity of characterization.
87
GamingTatertot Apr 2, 2026 +97
Bring back Donkey Kong and get King K. Rool
97
TheLost_Chef Apr 2, 2026 +23
I really hope they do some great casting for Wario/Waluigi and write them as good villains. They have the potential to be hilarious if done right.
23
Marc_Quill Apr 2, 2026 +20
kinda surprised they didn't do a Wario and Waluigi stinger.
20
IsChristianAwake Apr 2, 2026 +228
The only thing really going for the Mario Galaxy Movie is the Visuals - They’re absolutely stunning. Plot is incredibly barebones. Pacing is all over the place - genuinely felt like I was watching YouTube shorts Enjoyed all the Star Fox parts.
228
Ecstatic-Clue2145 Apr 2, 2026 +35
Barebones means at least everything is justified because of a main arc and it's just not anymore interesting than that. But when I got to the latter half I started to feel like there stopped being a narrative because I was zoning out. That will happen when I'm waiting for a follow through for something but it's taking too long but here it feels like it never "got" to what it seemed to have set up. A paperthin plot is at minimum an ok movie but I literally felt like they only wrote the movie half way because it got shoved out for these mandated events that had to happen by the time the movie ended.
35
whiteshark70 Apr 2, 2026 +1360
Man. I wish Fox wasn’t spoiled in the poster. Would have been an amazing surprise in theater
1360
Sisiwakanamaru Apr 2, 2026 +528
Also, Glen Powell nailed it as Fox McCloud, when I was watching the movie I was like, "Damn! This guy is excellent as Fox, I can't wait to see him again"
528
ChillyWilly0180 Apr 2, 2026 +287
He was perfectly cast as the cocky flyboy for the second time
287
ContinuumGuy Apr 2, 2026 +136
Isn't this actually his fourth time as a pilot? Wasn't he John Glenn in Hidden Figures and he was in that Korean War movie with Jonathan Majors? Dude plays good pilot.
136
ChillyWilly0180 Apr 2, 2026 +38
But were they cocky?
38
NightmareDJK Apr 2, 2026 +49
He loves the Star Fox games and really wanted to do it.
49
Armascout Apr 2, 2026 +53
I couldn’t stop smiling whenever Fox was on screen. I love the cocky rogue archetype and Glenn Powell did an amazing job capturing fox.
53
ICumCoffee Apr 2, 2026 +127
i don’t know why would you spoil something like that ~~3 days~~ a week before the movie is in theatres?
127
OneTravellingMcDs Apr 2, 2026 +94
I think it was quietly leaked, and they knew reviews were going to be bad, so it at least got some buzz around the film.
94
Morgan-Moonscar Apr 2, 2026 +37
It's a common tactic by the studios. When the bad reviews for Batman vs Superman dropped, suddenly the advertising shifted to focus on Doomsday. Spoiling his appearance in the hopes it would generate enough hype to fill more seats.
37
2mock2turtle Apr 2, 2026 +61
It took me back to circa 2012 Nintendo where they would spoil *everything* in trailers, including late-game reveals. Not the resurgence I would've wanted but arguably the one we deserve.
61
ContinuumGuy Apr 2, 2026 +34
I read somewhere that apparently in Japan, there's like a cultural mindset where spoilers aren't a big deal. Something like the Japanese being more interested in the process, the journey, how it comes together. In addition, the fact is that a LOT of nerdy stuff there (and thus the stuff most likely to be of interest to western nerd culture that is obsessed with spoilers) is based on other things that have already come out (manga, for example, and manga-reading is far greater in Japan than, say, comic books are in the West -- there's a whole political/cultural reason for this that goes back to the late 40s/1950s but that's for another time) so nobody cares if Cool Character A makes a stunning return from the dead in the finale since the thought is the fans already read that in the manga. While obviously that doesn't apply to everything, it sort of exerts an influence that makes some companies put spoilers in even if it's a totally original work.
34
dabocx Apr 2, 2026 +24
Yeah spoilers aren’t a big deal. There was subway trains and posters everywhere in tokyo for the JJK manga that spoiled loads of things before the Anime got to those arcs. People that only watch the anime would have been spoiled way in advance but it’s just common there. There were loads of spoilers of stuff everywhere and even the movie trailers for their movies seem more spoiler forward.
24
micaroma Apr 2, 2026 +31
Japanese audiences caring less about spoilers (ネタバレ / netabare) is a myth. People very much don't want to be spoiled and are careful not to spoil others. Where you might see a difference in Japan is the *companies* revealing major plot points or surprise characters in marketing. That's because Japanese audiences tend to be more risk-averse when spending on entertainment and want more of a guarantee on what they're getting out of a media purchase. (But that doesn't mean people are indifferent to spoilers.) What you said about manga/anime is true, though. If major events already happened years ago in the original work and the whole fanbase knows about it, then marketing for the adaptation probably won't hide it. But that doesn't apply to completely original works. Source: I've been living in Japan for 6 years, watch various Japanese Youtubers, follow media discourse on SNS, regularly talk to Japanese people about media, etc. The attitude towards spoilers is no less relaxed than the West.
31
Demiurge_1205 Apr 2, 2026 +21
I remember getting like, the character poster for Skyward Sword's final boss like a month in advance lmao. And when I finally played the game, I was like "why would they release this? The character doesn't appear until literally the last hour or so of the game."
21
VictorVonDoomers Apr 2, 2026 +116
Mr. Game & Watch was the biggest surprise cameo for me, never expected to see that lunatic on the big screen in my life!
116
dropshield Apr 2, 2026 +44
Was anyone else expecting Mr Game & Watch to hit a 9 when he pulled out the hammer? Honestly was a bit disappointed it wasn’t that haha
44
Kubu-Tsukareta Apr 2, 2026 +389
It felt like Bowser didn't have an arc in this movie as much as a series of disconnected flat lines. Someone wanted to give Bowser some moral complexity, but the corporate mandate needed him to be the unambiguous bad guy by the end. I don't think a compromise was the right answer here.
389
squidlaw920 Apr 2, 2026 +151
I wanted bowser to save Rosalina and sacrifice himself as an act of redemption. But alas we got dry bowser “the skull king!!”
151
Kubu-Tsukareta Apr 2, 2026 +63
Yeah, that was never going to happen, but they could have at least let him develop some sort of pragmatism. Not have him be all in on his kid's "let's kill literally everyone" agenda. I won't lie, though, I felt his pride when he said "and I am his son" and went into fury mode. Kinda jars with his motivation in Bowser's Fury, but w/e
63
GameOfLife24 Apr 2, 2026 +72
I saw the axe, I saw they were on the bridge, I knew they would ruin his character arc.
72
memberOFLocals1 Apr 2, 2026 +54
What I took away from it is that Bowser was willing to give up his past antics for a new way of living up until Bowser Jr showed him the dream he and his father envisioned since he was a child. That dream and finally being able to be close with his son and temptation of power overcame him. He couldn't resist such belonging when he's dedicated so much to reach that purpose. Seeing his son making it for him convinced him all the more to trade in his newfound growth for an old founded desire. Not excusing him of course but it never came off to me that Bowser wasn't going to at least be compelled by the idea in some way.
54
DarkMetroid567 Apr 2, 2026 +39
I think what makes it feel so frantic is that we only end up believing that Bowser is “changed” for a tiny tiny fraction of the movie. Bowser still retains his evil energy in tiny form — and when he ends up hugging and helping Mario it’s played as a huge shock. Him staying evil and to his roots isn’t shocking at all as much as him being friendly is a “wtf?” moment.
39
ToneBone12345 Apr 2, 2026 +557
I swear the star that crashes says princess peach I fuckingly found you instead of finally
557
OrangeVoxel Apr 2, 2026 +200
So long gay bowser
200
Personal_Comb_6745 Apr 2, 2026 +17
Well, Bowser *does* kiss Mario before Peach does.
17
nospimi99 Apr 2, 2026 +39
I literally gasped when I heard him speak because it 100% sounded like that lol. No clue how no one heard the same in production and went “maybe we should have he re-record that line” lol
39
evolution4652 Apr 2, 2026 +132
I THOUGHT I HEARD THAT TOO
132
arseniccrazy Apr 2, 2026 +90
I HEARD THAT TOO. After that line delivery there were tons of murmurs and giggles in the audience and I heard one kid relatively loudly tell his friend "no yeah I heard it too" which led to more giggles from the audience.
90
ToneBone12345 Apr 2, 2026 +34
I’m honestly surprised that take got in the movie
34
waynechriss Apr 2, 2026 +180
The 2D victory screen after Mario and Peach overcame Bowser Junior's gauntlet got the biggest laugh out of my theater.
180
GameOfLife24 Apr 2, 2026 +59
That and what looked like a kaizo mario level with jr putting ridiculous objects as traps for peach and mario
59
GearGolemTMF Apr 2, 2026 +29
I was always wondering how they'd incorporate SMM into the movie. They did not disappoint with the hot garbage!
29
NoNefariousness2144 Apr 2, 2026 +18
And the construction hats they all wore at the end to rebuild her castle was a little reference.
18
ANTEC221 Apr 2, 2026 +266
Movie was okay. Was there any point to have Donald Glover as Yoshi? Was he paid actors minimum? Not that I wanted to hear his voice as Yoshi but I checked casting after and it's like why not have anyone else.
266
Toushi138 Apr 2, 2026 +299
He specifically requested that role lol
299
EliteJoz Apr 2, 2026 +50
"This is the Galaxy, whoo. Fireballs in my area. Look there goes bowser. I'm gonna bury him."
50
Playful-Position4735 Apr 2, 2026 +108
Apparently cuz he asked nicely lol
108
TheWatersOfMars Apr 2, 2026 +94
Because "Donald Glover is Yoshi" was a headline that got a couple more people into the theatre. That's why they hire expensive celebrities at all, instead of talented voice actors.
94
isval17 Apr 2, 2026 +414
Fox McCloud will return in Avengers: Doomsday
414
Geno0wl Apr 2, 2026 +142
The few non-Mario IP Nintendo cameos really makes them doing Zelda live action a confusing choice.
142
GamingTatertot Apr 2, 2026 +67
It will be quite wild to see a Super Smash Bros movie without any Zelda characters
67
Morgan-Moonscar Apr 2, 2026 +24
Like Marvel vs Capcom without any X-Men characters
24
CardinalnGold Apr 2, 2026 +14
Could always do toon link as the Zelda rep for the Mario movie universe
14
NoNefariousness2144 Apr 2, 2026 +15
Exactly, Smash Bros Ultimate already has three versions of Link. So it won’t be too confusing for audiences if live-action Link stays seperate and an animated Smash Bros film has a Toon Link.
15
UnknownFiddler Apr 2, 2026 +21
Honestly with what these mario movies are I'm glad they are going live action with Zelda because it might actually have some substance to it.
21
brb1006 Apr 2, 2026 +85
While everybody is asking for a "Smash Bros Cinematic Universe" which has been talked to death. I'm just sitting here thinking of how much potential the Star Fox franchise has to getting adapted into a fun and energetic animated film series. The [Nintendo Power Star Fox comics](https://imgur.com/gallery/star-fox-nintendo-power-comic-by-benimaru-itoh-5Vvlb) released in 1993 managed to flesh out the game's universe and characters before it was retconned by SF64. It even introduced Fara Phoenix, the first female Star Fox member predating Miyu and Fay from Star Fox 2 and Krystal. It would be a decent companion piece with The Bad Guys films in terms of being more action-packed. I could see either Dreamworks of Sony Pictures Animation being the perfect fit to adapt it. Nintendo if your reading this, please put the 1993 Star Fox Comics back in print like you did with "Super Mario Adventures"!

This! Everyone sees Star Fox and immediately jumps to a Smash movie. I'd rather see a standalone Starfox movie 1000 times over.
24
NES_Classical_Music Apr 2, 2026 +681
i still cannot believe that nintendo officially spoiled the literal best part of the movie. i hope they release a full "deluxe" soundtrack because there is a lot missing from the current album on streaming.
681
brb1006 Apr 2, 2026 +247
Seeing Fox and the original Star Fox team on the big screen was a very surreal experience! Man, the Internet would had a field day if Krystal alongside Miyu and Fay from Star Fox 2 were included.
247
trizzo0309 Apr 2, 2026 +38
Wait... was Slippi or Wolf in it?
38
NewAgeRetroHippie96 Apr 2, 2026 +60
The other members of the crew were shown in a sort of flash back.
60
brb1006 Apr 2, 2026 +66
That flashback was such a tease for a standalone Star Fox Movie.
66
Zorpix Apr 2, 2026 +24
I so very much hope the movie is done in the animation style the flashback was
24
NewAgeRetroHippie96 Apr 2, 2026 +18
I was thinking tv show ala Buzz Lightyear of Star Command
18
whiteshark70 Apr 2, 2026 +9
The Star Fox team shows up super briefly in an 80s style cartoon showing Fox's backstory. Fox explicitly blames the frog for getting him stranded in the first place lol. [The Corneria motif](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNyUL-3t3N8)(?) is played for a few seconds a few times in the movie as well.

squidlaw920 Apr 2, 2026 +102
They didn’t spoil Mr. Game and watch!
102
radikraze Apr 2, 2026 +47
That was unexpected and hilarious
47
GameOfLife24 Apr 2, 2026 +33
I was in a full theater. If they didn’t spoil fox, I’m sure I would’ve heard a huge applause. Barely anyone flinched when he showed up since we all knew
33
DontBeAngryBeHappy Apr 2, 2026 +277
Fox McCloud/Star Fox was the best parts of the movie for me. Had a nice 80’s style anime scene with Peppy, Slippy, and Falcon. ![gif](giphy|2ijxqaLyJ4L2IgI06D)
277
Sisiwakanamaru Apr 2, 2026 +104
Yeah, I want a Star Fox project with that 80's anime style.
104
cows1100 Apr 2, 2026 +37
Gives me a lot of hope for the rumored Star Fox game coming out next month. Hopefully it’s got the sauce. I love Star Fox. About time he got a renaissance.
37
InnocentTailor Apr 2, 2026 +37
With Slippy getting dunked on with his N64 sprite XD.
37
evolution4652 Apr 2, 2026 +670
I saw a review describe this as “jingling keys” the movie and honestly…doesn’t get more spot on than that. Big goofy grin when toad told fox to do a barrel roll.

thenatural134 Apr 2, 2026 +122
It felt like Super Smash Bros, the movie.

29
savageboredom Apr 2, 2026 +139
This movie was made for TikTok. It's basically a series of 2-5 minute sequences that have little to no bearing on each other.
139
GearGolemTMF Apr 2, 2026 +37
I love how BJR's "ultimate security" measure was literally him making a hot garbage Mario Maker level
37
crome66 Apr 2, 2026 +35
I can’t believe Fox McCloud had more screen time than Rosalina in a Mario Galaxy movie.
35
rockandorroll2 Apr 2, 2026 +123
If you're not a huge Nintendo fan, there is NOTHING for you here. The characters are slingshotted from place to place seemingly at random, they have a little battle/adventure/chase, then rocket to the next level.

Kuiper Apr 2, 2026 +91
A beat from the movie that confused me: is it ever explained why Mario needs to abandon the Mushroom Kingdom and go find Peach? Like, after Bowser Jr's unsuccessful attempt to rescue his dad ends with the castle crash-landed in parts unknown, Chris Pratt says "we gotta find a way off this planet and get to Peach," and it was not clear to me how he came to that conclusion -- why would he "get to Peach" instead of returning to the Mushroom Kingdom with tiny Bowser in custody? Wasn't Mario's job to protect the Mushroom Kingdom in Peach's absence? What changed? Was there anything during the scuffle between the Mario bros and Bowser Jr. that might suggest to Mario that Peach was in danger and need of saving?
91
TheMovieSimp Apr 2, 2026 +77
Tbh it made no sense why Mario and Luigi didn't go with Peach in the first place.
77
Practical-Ad-9099 Apr 2, 2026 +39
Peach snuck away, they didn’t have a chance to go with her and toad
39
Ecstatic-Clue2145 Apr 2, 2026 +29
They're saying why is it written that they had to be separated because it didn't seem like there was much consequence in them being together when they reunited. it was like "oh hey you guys made it!" ???
29
dloc85 Apr 2, 2026 +25
My thought process was Mario was just barely escaped bowers jr, he knows Peach is going to recuse Rosalina, so she’s probably gonna need help
25
HamsterMaster8 Apr 2, 2026 +17
Yep! Also they make a big deal of Wart getting in contact which led to nothing.
17
whiteshark70 Apr 2, 2026 +254
Pretty fun! Though the writing felt… missing. Like Peach and Rosalina didn’t have a convo at the end about them being sisters? That got swept under the rug? No tearful reunion?
254
WrongLander Apr 2, 2026 +99
>The writing felt missing. Agreed, in a very literal sense (there were long stretches with no dialogue where there really needed to be), and not something you should reasonably be saying about a sequel to one of the highest grossing animations ever. It's like they knew they didn't need to bother with a decent script or story, that the brand name would just carry any old c*** they shat out.
99
dagreenman18 Apr 2, 2026 +115
The writing was missing. Things just happened for the sake of happening. It also felt weirdly disjointed. Like this is a hacked together version of another Mario movie.
115
Blursed_Hearse12 Apr 2, 2026 +48
This sounds like the MO for a lot of Illumination movies. Scenes happen just to…happen, to give the kids a laugh or to move the “plot” forward one sentence.
48
uncanny_mac Apr 2, 2026 +17
That was my thoughts on the last dispicable me. Bunch of shorts ducttaped together.
17
Blursed_Hearse12 Apr 2, 2026 +22
I distinctly remember watching The Secret Life of Pets once and mid way through I realize I’m just watching scenes and I can’t grasp any connecting narrative or at the least any valid reason to go from this to that. How did the Mario film IP end up in Illumination’s hands? Because their movies print money? And Mario movies made by them will print five times the money? Cynically I feel like that is 100% the answer, cuz in a more just world where some measure of care and artistry will go into it - why the *f**** isn’t this at least a Dreamworks production?
22
Pho-Soup Apr 2, 2026 +19
The movie ended so abruptly it was kinda jarring
19
GameOfLife24 Apr 2, 2026 +79
That sister moment was not earned. Chatgpt writing
79
Able_Advertising_371 Apr 2, 2026 +60
Looked like they tried going for an elsa anna heartwarming ending? Just failed at it, and then the ROB joke mimicking the sloth from zootopia
60
OctorokHero Apr 2, 2026 +43
To be fair, that's what ROB was actually like.
43
CrazySnipah Apr 2, 2026 +13
I can imagine Miyamoto watching Zootopia, thinking, “Hey, this reminds me of Robot Block!”
13
WrongLander Apr 2, 2026 +42
I couldn't believe the audacity in straight-up ripping off Flash from Zootopia.
42
sablestew Apr 2, 2026 +57
Wish the Fox reveal wasn't spoiled. Easily one of the best parts of the movie Also it was shocking how little dialogue there was in the last half of the movie. Everything was about the gorgeous visuals and action
57
Barnard87 Apr 2, 2026 +21
Glad someone mentioned the action. Sure even the fights were reference-galore, but they were REALLY creative at mixing in a ton of different moves and power ups spread across the games. Hell, we got Game and Watch's Up B falling animation lol.
21
Batusiman Apr 2, 2026 +118
As with the first, the Score was the highlight for me, glad it wasn’t replaced with needle drops this time either Also, and I can’t prove it, but with all the E. Gadd teases I can’t help but feel there was some abandoned plot at some point about Bowser Jr just straight up robbing him.
118
Sisiwakanamaru Apr 2, 2026 +57
Yeah, one of the most positive aspects of this movie was they let the score shine and helped our movie watching experience.
57
The_Throwback_King Apr 2, 2026 +25
And the needle drops in they did use were reserved for instrumentals and background music. Perfect amount of restraint Yoshi exploring New York to Biggie’s Hypnotise being very tastefully done
25
Bukki13 Apr 2, 2026 +27
Was the post-credit scene with >!Princess Daisy!< supposed to tease anything or...?
27
MyNameIs_Jordan Apr 2, 2026 +45
Same as the previous film's end tease with Yoshi, they're just confirming that Daisy will be in the next movie.
45
ICumCoffee Apr 2, 2026 +240
I read a review that said ***”It’s a movie made for youtube shorts viewers”*** and I wholeheartedly agree. Very bland on the writing side, yes there are cool references and cameos but nothing much is going on. I know it’s a kids movie but those movies can use a good plot (e.g. Hoppers from last month)
240
squidlaw920 Apr 2, 2026 +17
Movie was made for marketing
17
dandaman64 Apr 2, 2026 +139
Honestly the people who try to negate criticism because "it's a kids movie" are f****** stupid. Not only do kids deserve good, well-written movies, some of the most impactful movies ever made are kids movies. Don't excuse mediocrity just because "it's not for you."
139
Able_Advertising_371 Apr 2, 2026 +38
There’s an insane amount of nostalgic references for gamers, so many I’m sure I missed a lot. Shame they couldn’t work in a good way for those references to show up organically
38
Adequate_Images Apr 2, 2026 +138
Watching this movie I was reminded of the behind the scenes video of Trey Parker talking about writing South Park. https://youtu.be/vGUNqq3jVLg?si=K_tz0f8GyfCWCDuD If between each scene if you can say ‘and then’ it’s bad. You should be able to say ‘therefore or but’. This movie has a lot of scenes where something happens and then something else happens and then something else and so on. Some of those scenes were fun and fine but this is barely a movie.
138
JasonAnarchy Apr 2, 2026 +36
Yes, I was thinking of this exact line while watching! It's just random stuff happening and you don't have a reason to care.
36
Phillyboishowdown Apr 2, 2026 +14
True, the biggest take away for me was just pacing, didn’t”t feel like “and then and then and then and then” it was more like “andthenandthenandthenandthen”
14
jessehechtcreative Apr 2, 2026 +12
I was literally thinking of this during the castle abduction scene. And then and then and then with no cause and effect. No one talks to each other in a meaningful manner in this movie….

Expensive-Ranger6272 Apr 2, 2026 +113
Finally understood what children felt like watching A Minecraft Movie when Mr. Game & Watch, Wart and Fox McCloud showed up on screen
113

I can’t believe Mr. Game & Watch is f****** dead

Glen Powell was the best part about this honestly. He’s the only voice actor who sounded like he really gave a shit. Green light that Star Fox movie immediately.

KingMario05 Apr 2, 2026 +16
Yes. Hopefully with better f****** writers.
16
AFF123456 Apr 2, 2026 +19
This is the first time I’ve seen a “this movie can’t be used to train AI” line in the credits. Wonder how much that would hold up in court, though everyone knows how ruthless nintendo’s lawyers are
19
LilJerBear Apr 2, 2026 +61
Can we talk about how Princess Peach fight at the c***** is straight out of The Matrix Reloaded?!
61
KingMario05 Apr 2, 2026 +20
Eh. Shrek did it first. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
20
EducationalMusician2 Apr 2, 2026 +8
That fight scene was actually pretty cool lol
8
DeoGame Apr 2, 2026 +48
An awesome collection of setpieces, references and a killer soundtrack that doesn't really gel as a film. I'd be lying if I didn't say as a lifelong fan I had a blast, but I also would be lying if I said that even as a fan this was barely comprehensible at points. I really wish Fox and Lumalee weren't spoiled.
48
DUKEPLANTER Apr 2, 2026 +88
All jokes aside, how the hell did they manage to make a Mario GALAXY movie and have Rosalina get the least screen time ????
88
Kotose Apr 2, 2026 +29
And then what little screen time she does get, she spends it being tortured and imprisoned. She doesn't even get her just desserts at the end, just a nonsensical hand touch with her long lost "sister" that saves the day I guess. Bad movie for Rosalina fans :(
29
squidlaw920 Apr 2, 2026 +55
Why did stardust create two blonde princesses, we may never no.
55
GameOfLife24 Apr 2, 2026 +23
Way to retcon the Mario galaxy storybook they even brought back to retail. Also why did Rosalina throw a baby into the warp pipe instead of going with her
23
Thedarkpp Apr 2, 2026 +30
The sisters reveal is like the most Mario lore in the past 20 years.
30
Ill-Muscle945 Apr 2, 2026 +43
In the trailer, Mario saying "over my dead body" felt SO weird to me. Mario is not a character I'd ever imagine saying something like that. Is the writing in the full film as awkward?
43
NotTaken-username Apr 2, 2026 +34
I can’t picture Charles Martinet saying that. “Over my-a dead-a body! YAHOO!”
34
Dairunt Apr 2, 2026 +10
On the other hand, we do see Luigi's soulless corpse in the Simon Belmont trailer for Smash
10
brandonchristensen Apr 2, 2026 +234
It felt like a Disney Ride. It’s fun and fast paced with a very shallow story. But I enjoyed it, and more important my kids really enjoyed it.  I had low expectations but was met with a ton of fan service that my young self would have loved to see. So I’m happy with it for that.

VampireHunterAlex Apr 2, 2026 +12
I’ve got tickets to take my nephews on Saturday. Wasn’t really a fan of the 1st, but they loved it so I’m sure they’ll love the sequel as well.  Hopefully this’ll convince them to play some Star Fox games.
12
Give_Me_Ramen Apr 2, 2026 +10
The animation is honestly stunning. I couldnt get over how good it looked, saw it in imax. Story was pretty non existent and there was like a weird lack of dialogue? I had a really fun time with it tho
10
reecord2 Apr 2, 2026 +25
In the mid-credits scene when they were in the jail, I would have bet my life savings we were about to get a reveal of Wario and Waluigi in the next cell over.
25
GameOfLife24 Apr 2, 2026 +11
Anybody else upset that Mario had no character arc? He thinks he’s just a plumber not good enough for peach and then fox comes, who would be a good competitor to make Mario jealous but they become friends right away.
11
ProblemSl0th Apr 2, 2026 +12
Honestly it kinda feels like no one has a character arc in this movie except bowser, who flip flops very unnaturally imo, and maybe debatably peach? I find it really puzzling that Bowser's obsession with peach, the driving force of his actions in the first movie, plays no relevance in his actions/conflict this movie and is only brought up for two gags. I understand not wanting to do the same thing but you can't just sweep it under the rug when you made it his **entire personality** in the prior film. How did it never come up between him and Bowser Jr.? Even if they don't want to redo the whole "Peach is your mama" thing from sunshine, it's a pretty big elephant in the room he should address before deciding to go ahead **and just try to kill her** along with Mario. The character writing is just so weak...Even Fox didn't feel like himself. Falco is the cocky ace pilot. Fox is the cool-headed, responsible leader trying to live up to his father's legacy. Sure he can have fun from time to time but idk he came off weird in the movie.
12
AltoKaze Apr 2, 2026 +34
Why does both Fox and Bowser Jr. have significantly more screen time than Rosalina and why does she only meet Mario in the last 2 minutes of the movie that ends extremely abruptly
34
radikraze Apr 2, 2026 +9
Loved Fox. Also the Pikmin getting off the Dolphin made me smile, was hoping to see Olimar with them
9
TheUltimatenerd05 Apr 2, 2026 +10
Bowser and Bowser Jr's ark feels off.  The setup of Bowser not being a good dad and reconnecting with him is fine but it's weird the only flashback is to Bowser reading a bedtime story. It's like they couldn't commit to their own setup.  I think it needed a flashback to show Jr being left at boarding school and feeling abandoned. Then them reconnecting could have had weight.

Every time this movie approached a character moment it ran screaming in the opposite direction.

Salt-Hotel-9502 Apr 2, 2026 +45
Were there any writing teams involved in this movie?
45
averageweebchan Apr 2, 2026 +29
Glen Powell stole the show
29
Clemenx00 Apr 2, 2026 +29
The only bad thing about this is that I had a m*********** behind me literally saying "reference!" out loud at pretty much every character that appeared lmao.
29
heyitsmejosh Apr 2, 2026 +43
So he was talking for an hour and 38 minutes straight?
43
darkultima Apr 2, 2026 +19
Really sad how little Rosalina is present for the movie :(
19
ShitAlphabet Apr 2, 2026 +9
The movie was awful compared to the first. Was just all over the place. An the just kept going from one fantastic over the top fight sequence to the next. Atleast the first one had a story.
9
NoNefariousness2144 Apr 2, 2026 +9
It was funny how quick the film ended. They saved the day, rebuilt the castle in one minute, then ended with a random ass shot of Mario planting the flag.
9
Fragahah Apr 2, 2026 +8
Man… what a disappointment. After the first film I was excited for this series to be a fun mix of nostalgia, adult humor moments and of course catering to kids to love these characters. Instead we got Nintendo trying to shove every IP they have in a thin script with no real stakes.
8
chads3058 Apr 2, 2026 +59
There was literally zero character development or progress in the entire movie for any character. Any signs of character depth was rushed or immediately glossed over. We didn’t learn anything about Rosalina, she gets captured and then we see her at the end. The entire movie felt like it was designed for the TikTok generation. All visually overwhelming with zero substance.
59
Seaphron Apr 2, 2026 +33
This movie should have been a home run for me and I walked out really not enjoying it. I loved all the nostalgic love they were throwing in every scene, but you still have to write a good plot around it. It made for an incredibly disjointed movie that didn't flow well at all. I also don't feel like they sat in any of the musical arrangements long enough to really enjoy them. We got snippets that all sounded incredible, but most of them really felt like they were like 'did you see we referenced that one too'. They were better than the licensed music from the first movie, but that's a low bar lol Also was bummed how little Rosalina is actually in the movie, but I was afraid that was going to happen from the trailers. Her story played out exactly like I expected and it sucks. She's never been in a damsel in distress role prior to this movie.
33
dagreenman18 Apr 2, 2026 +16
I guess it’s my fault to expect things to happen with motivation instead of “we’re doing this now I guess”. They just blasted lots of references for 90 minutes instead of focusing on any one plot. Also, Fox McCloud is here because “reasons”? And he’ll conviently be leaving because Peach fixed his warp drive from another demension. Despite them not being able to fix the ship earlier. It’s just a lot of empty noise, but cool action scenes help things. The mid credits is literally the funniest scene in the movie. I’m happy they remembered they have access to the library of literally the greatest video game music composer of all time Koji Kondo. Instead of just using music references the whole time. Yoshi in Brooklyn was a great moment. It’s agressively okay 6/10
