Bloody Disgusting!
Official Runtime of the ‘Backrooms’ Movie Is NOT Over 2 Hours
After A24 released the official trailer earlier this week, a rumor began to spread on social media that director Kane Parsons’ Backrooms movie has a runtime of a whopping 2 hours, 25 minutes. This was information allegedly pulled from A24’s own ticketing website for the film, but is there any truth to the rumor that […]

Was concerned this movie would go the FNAF route and stay PG-13 to reach a larger audience, good to know A24 let Kane really go for it and make it be rated R

Weirdly enough it was the full penetration scene in the end credits that did it

Which is funny, because when they announced this film, Kane wasn't old enough to see an R rated movie without an adult.

This is breaking my brain lmao Kane is a legend
7
FictionFantom Apr 2, 2026 +21
Having seen (I think) all of the Backrooms videos, it doesn’t exactly scream “this needs to be rated R”. Or is my understanding of ratings incorrect and simple jump scares require an R rating?

Likely because of gore unless for some reason there’s a sex scene lol

I don't think the series would need an r rating at all even as is. The bacteria isn't bloody red which other than sexual content or profanity is the only thing pushing this movie for an r rating. It honestly doesn't need to be r at all but I'm all the more excited that it is. I can only imagine the horror we might see. Or possibly the funny use of curse words

I'll admit I didn't really know anything about the whole backrooms thing other than it being a creepypasta, I had seem games on steam and some posts on liminal spaces pages and whatnot. After the trailer came out I saw the director was 20 and was a little taken a back, then went on a deep dive and read all about Kane Pixels / Kane Parsons, and found out he had made this entire series on Youtube, and immediately went and watched the whole thing front to back. Holy shit - first of all, I cannot believe this dude was able to pull off such an impressive feat in his teens. Secondly, I am now a thousand times more excited for this movie now that I've seen the original series and gotten into the existing lore. Crazy how this stuff just sort of happens on the internet and you sort of hear about it in passing without realizing how huge it is or what impact it's actually having. Anyway, I'm BEYOND excited for this film now, and basically became a huge backrooms fan overnight due to this dude's work. EDIT: if anybody wants to check out his original series, [you can check it out here.](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVAh-MgDVqvDUEq6qDXqORBioE4Yhol_z) They've announced the movie is canon with this series, though I assume they are making it with the intent that you can go in completely blind. My assumption is just that there will be easter eggs and bits of lore that people familiar with the original series will recognize.
162
DataDude00 Apr 3, 2026 +63
It is pretty crazy that a 20 year old first time director making a psych horror film based on a 4chan meme was able to land Chiwetel Ejiofor and up and coming actors like Renate Reinsve and Lukita Maxwell for his debut film. A24 got a lot of clout in the community right now
63
StoneyLepi Apr 3, 2026 +50
A24 distancing themselves from Hollywood and focusing on more abstract/unique films really let actors & directors set their creative side free without worrying too much about exec interference. It’s almost similar to how an actor would jump onto a Scorsese or Spielberg film without much hesitation.
50
jamiemm Apr 3, 2026 +12
Always remember: Orson Welles was 25 when he made "Citizen Kane."
12
arsonist_firefighter Apr 2, 2026 +13

13
ThatGuyFromTheM0vie Apr 2, 2026 +29
[Here you go!](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVAh-MgDVqvDUEq6qDXqORBioE4Yhol_z) It gets better and better and better as it goes on. Even Kane himself admits the very first video, the one that went mega viral…he doesn’t like it lol. But he was also only 16. He’s too harsh on himself.
29
arsonist_firefighter Apr 2, 2026 +6
Thank you!!

ridddle Apr 3, 2026 +1
He also doesn’t like when folks focus on his age too much. This led to memes like "I can’t believe Kane has made this when he was 6"

I also highly recommend his short series, [The Oldest View](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DYOG1RuJ4w&list=PLVAh-MgDVqvAwoFF5hJmtRrx86Yw-pdN1).

Antithesys Apr 2, 2026 +5
I did the same thing (though I'm not quite done) and am also really looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I'm not sure all of this is my scene, but just the success story of this kid and the fact that it all blew up out of random 4chan nonsense.
5
we_are_devo Apr 2, 2026 +5
I find his videos pretty corny tbh, but I agree it's an incredible achievement for a 16 and now 20 year old. I'm definitely interested to see what he can pull off with a big team.
5
BreakCreepy4673 Apr 2, 2026 +121
I’m really interested in how the film is going to be critically received. I’m expected mixed reviews, but man I love the presentation and actors from the trailer. Edit: *expecting
121
Goosojuice Apr 2, 2026 +33
Honestly, I'm expecting it to be received as an average movie that will gain a following over the years. KP strikes me as someone who can keep his ideas restrained and ambiguous enough without pissing off audiences with a JJ Abrams like "mystery box".
33
Orleanian Apr 3, 2026 +11
Creepypasta horror's got quite some momentum these past few years. Rob Lowe and Crispin Glover are some big names in the Tommy Taffy adaption coming out, and I believe they're also shopping out the Right Left game.
11
_bieber_hole_69 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Are they really doing a Left/Right movie?? I remember when it was coming out on nosleep and was completely enamored. Always thought it'd be an awesome high-budget series. Some of the imagery is incredible. I havent read it since pre-covid but kinda want to again. Edit: I found the first part. I believe there are 10 parts total. Worth a read if you have time. https://www.listnook.com/r/nosleep/s/TwPh89flwU

53
sloppyjo12 Apr 2, 2026 +12
I didn’t even realize Faces of Death was a remake
12
cronedog Apr 2, 2026 +29
It's kinda just using the name, the old film was a gross mix of real death scenes and faked ones with no narrative.
29
AustinTanius Apr 2, 2026 +7
It is and isn't. The original was a collection of videos some real some fake but seemed very real for the time and most people believed it as it was really only word of mouth that spread the tales of this movie. Even though it came out in 70s As a young kid in the 90s it was such a taboo, and scary topic. "Did you hear they killed and ate a real monkey?" The new one is using that to make a mediocre movie to bank on the mystery behind the first VHS tapes of FoD.
7
iHeardYouShart Apr 2, 2026 +2
I’m not sure which faces of death it was I saw when I was younger but I remember a bear biting a guys head off. The guy got his car to take a Polaroid pic of the bear and boom! You see the head get torn off in a gnarly way.

SeekersWorkAccount Apr 2, 2026 +43
Why do people keep saying this movie is directed at teens?
43
TheGurpler Apr 2, 2026 +128
Probably because the director is 20 and has been making this content since he was like 16 and there's an entire genre of analogue horror of this type that's mainly watched on YouTube.
128
Malefectra Apr 2, 2026 +34
I’m 41 and I absolutely love this kind or horror. Reminds me of when I was a kid visiting my grandparents and other family out in rural Texas and the only station that was in range was some weird local station, and it was BARELY in range so it was often staticky and distorted. You’d think it was a scrambled p*** channel if you lived in the city
34
SeekersWorkAccount Apr 2, 2026 +6
Can you recommend any channels or videos to start with? I'm very new to this genre

The Oldest View was absolutely incredible. I recommend anyone interested in this to watch that - just skip part 1. Its around 40 minutes long, also made by Kane Pixels.
8
the_joy_of_VI Apr 3, 2026 +4
Why skip part one?
4
Reallycute-Dragon Apr 3, 2026 +2
Part 1 is a bit abstract and will likely turn most away. It's better watched after the other parts so that you can try to connect the dots.
2
the_joy_of_VI Apr 3, 2026 +3
Ok I skipped it and I’m currently halfway thru part 3, the lights just turned on in the mall
3
the_joy_of_VI Apr 3, 2026 +1
Bruh how are you gonna tell me to skip the first episode but NOT the last one??? To anyone reading this: Don’t watch the last episode unless you want to watch someone aimlessly walking around an abandoned lot for twenty f****** minutes
1
logosloki Apr 3, 2026 +1
the last episode is a behind the scenes combined with a director's commentary and a wake for a building. it's not part of the series in terms of narrative as it's talking about the destruction of the real life mall where Kane did the filming.

I do hope Chiwetel Ejiofor actually is the main lead throughout the movie, he's a great actor. Not that he's just the bait to get the therapist lady in there.
11
pigletpooh Apr 3, 2026 +19
That “therapist lady” is the incredible f****** actor, Renate Reinsve, who won best actress at Cannes for ‘The Worst person in the world,’ and was equally incredible in Sentimental Value. Put some f****** respect on her name.
19
JaylenBrownAllStar Apr 2, 2026 +9
Does that mean we might get a creature? I will admit I’m bored when it’s just the rooms. I feel the true terror comes from being chased and you don’t have time to think where you are going
9
Zedzii Apr 2, 2026 +29
Kane's first Backrooms short was the one that featured the weird TV headed creature that chased the MC through the backrooms, so I 100% expect something similar in this film.
29

Hoping for some Oldest View vibes too

People really have different takes on this. I think including - or certainly *showing* - a creature is absolute poison to this type of horror.
1
BMCarbaugh Apr 3, 2026 +2
As someone without much attachment to the youtube videos, the trailer for this looks f****** awesome and it's definitely one I'm eager to see. It just looks f****** neat. All the horror movies these days look the same to me; this feels like something entirely fresh and new.
2
thedinksterr Apr 2, 2026 +6
About the same length as Skinamarink. Interested in comparing the two after The Backrooms releases. Two horror movies of the 2020s dealing with liminal spaces, and probably, at the moment, the two biggest ones playing around with liminal ideas of the 2020s. Hasn’t gotten tapped into enough with new horror I feel like.
6
_back_in_the_woods_ Apr 2, 2026 +1
If it was over done, I think it would lose that spark. It's a pretty niche concept/setting/feeling and I'm ok with it staying that way. I LOVED Skinamarink (even though I admit it did feel a bit long for what it was). I'm excited to watch this for the uniqueness of it. I think the therapist angle is a bit odd. I really liked the "secret government project" aspect of the old shorts, but still excited.
1
thedinksterr Apr 2, 2026 +1
I’m with you on that that I’m ok with it staying that way as well. It is a concept and mood that seems can only be executed well in pretty unconventional ways. I liked Skinamarink a lot but thought it coulda been trimmed down a bit as well. It is something new and unique at the end of the day which is cool.

ThatGuyFromTheM0vie Apr 2, 2026 +4
[Obligatory link to the original YouTube series by Kane, the director of this film.](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVAh-MgDVqvDUEq6qDXqORBioE4Yhol_z) Kid was 16 when he made the first mega viral video. He’s 20 now, making and directing a movie for A24. Just casually.

nah, Kane just wants to have someone say f*** twice in a film and that makes it an automatic R.
1
DontOvercookPasta Apr 3, 2026 +1
I'm tentatively hopeful. The trailer made it look like it could be a "The Descent" or maybe a "Quarantine" with the way it is doing the hand held found footage stuff. I mainly have faith as MOST A24 features are at least decent. Also adding i am a fan of Chiwetel Ejiofor, dude can ACT regardless of whatever he's in (and he's been in some stinkers let's be real).

I kind of wish it would be longer. I always free like shorter movies don't expand the back stork or world details enough and I'm kind of worried that is what is going to happen here. I do appreciate the R rating instead of PG-13-ing it to hell for further reach.

SorryRoof1653 Apr 2, 2026 -8
I understand the runtime keeps it accessible for general audiences, but wow I would love a long, nightmarish, Lynchian style film set entirely in liminal spaces. It could be a sort of reflection on liminal space culture and how it has influenced horror and Internet culture in general. A 150-minute film of a lone person exploring iconic liminal spaces (Backrooms, Poolrooms, Apartment Complex, Infinite Garden) trying to escape while being haunted by an entity? It might be divisive but I would pay a TON of money to see that.
-8
StuartM96 Apr 2, 2026 +11
It wouldn’t be divisive it would be terrible. A two and a half hour movie where nothing really happens except exploring liminal spaces with one character and a perceived threat would be truly insufferably boring and self indulgent. Also nothing about that is Lynchian is that word has truly lost all meaning.
11
SorryRoof1653 Apr 2, 2026 -3
In concept it sounds daunting, but its not like it would have to be an extremely boring film in execution. There could be many ways to make a dream-like, liminal film like this while retaining horror elements in order to keep the audience ingrained. The short film by Kane Parsons, which this movie is based on, was exactly that, albeit only 10ish minutes long. The whole concept and point of liminal spaces is that they are endless and dreamlike, yet you can't shake off the feeling that you are being watched, or hunted by someone, or something. It would be an incredibly hard film to pull off, but if it worked, then it could very well be cemented as a sort of prestige/arthouse film that would bring enjoyed by a more limited audience for years/decades to come.
-3
StuartM96 Apr 2, 2026 +4
It doesn’t sound daunting, it sounds boring. I have seen plenty of slow cinema before but this idea doesn’t have any plot to warrant a 2h 30m run time. You literally said it yourself it’s the concept for his videos which happen in only ten minute increments you cannot build the same tension for over two hours with no pay off to it. Even arthouse films need some sense of a story to follow. Even if it’s vague and not immediately obvious it still has to be something you can understand on some sort of level.
4
SorryRoof1653 Apr 2, 2026 -2
I'm not saying there doesn't have to be a story, there could easily be a deep and complex backstory to the character that is slowly revealed to us as he traverses these liminal spaces. Perhaps trauma, or bad memories, or dreams he once had for his life, that are now dead. Liminal spaces are based off of our memories and dreams we've had as kids, which makes them a strong vessel to depict a complex and rich backstory to the main character.

I mean there is, just watch Kane’s series on YouTube lol. But in all seriousness….only David Lynch can David Lynch lol. It’s a miracle Inland Empire was made at all. Craziest film I’ve ever seen. Unwatchable probably for most people lol.

Same here, although it's likely just for language.

This is one of those concepts that's cool but I don't want an hour 45 of it. Probably just Google the twist/ending.

Good. So sick of these 3 hour movies.
-2
Brandon_Me Apr 3, 2026 +1
3 hour movies are an incredible rarity. But for me movies are never really too long, just poorly paced/edited. If I'm glued to the screen for an hour and half or 4 hours, I'm still glued to the screen and enjoying myself.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but the way the trailer framed the movie as a conventional horror flick had me feeling a little disappointed. The main draw and appeal of the original Backrooms for me was its mysterious and liminal nature (beyond just the environment itself). I was hoping they'd stick to that raw first-person "lost footage" formula similar to Blair Witch Project, rather than taking the conventional approach of telling the story of various characters visiting some spooky place. This to me just seems like they took the safer approach to appeal to a wider audience ($$$).

ThatGuyFromTheM0vie Apr 2, 2026 +7
I have seen only the opposite from almost everyone. Kane’s original series isn’t going anywhere. I assume he’ll continue to make more. Selling 90 minutes of 4:3 blurry VHS handy cam footage just doesn’t work in 2026. You forget Blair Witch EXPLODED because people thought it was REAL. Found Footage did not exist as a genre, so it was able to sucker punch the market. Now that shit is literally everywhere, and it kinda ran its course tbh. I think the film will be half and half. They built a set for the Backrooms, but it’s not like they built the entire Backrooms as a set—Kane will work his magic, and there WILL be large found footage sections in the film that utilize his traditional Blender skills to create the more fantastical rooms and insane imagery—they kinda have to. It can’t all be “normal film”. Some has to be CGI, but thankful Kane will do it in his style we know and love.

The backrooms have been a creep internet thing for awhile. That’s why the movie got greenlit. Look up liminal space. This all started on 4chan back in like 2018 or something.

Bobobo-bobobo-bo-bo Apr 2, 2026 -1
Definitely not going to see it in a theater if it’s less than 4 hours. Give me the Backrooms epic I want.

A movie whose audience is mostly teens has an R rating in 2026?
-31
Planet_Oblivion Apr 2, 2026 +29
It's a horror film.
29
turb0_encapsulator Apr 2, 2026 -9
lots of horror films directed at teens have a PG-13 rating.
-9
Planet_Oblivion Apr 2, 2026 +10
This is not directed at teens, it is for everybody.
10
happyflappypancakes Apr 2, 2026 +4
I watched the trailer of this earlier today. I can't really say I came away with the impression that it was for teens. What part makes you think that?
4
aliens-the-musical Apr 2, 2026 -20
And the horror footage we love is all pg-13 at best what's your point.

JaesopPop Apr 2, 2026 +9
Who is 'we', here?

SnooKiwis5538 Apr 2, 2026 +7
PG 13 horror films would all be better at R
7
homecinemad Apr 2, 2026 +11
What makes you think the audience for this movie is mostly teens?
11
ThatGuyFromTheM0vie Apr 2, 2026 +1
That article is largely incorrect about that. The Backrooms stuff that sprung up around the original hype has been more flipware games and TikTok shit, but the core series made by also the director of this movie…is much more mature.

APartyInMyPants Apr 2, 2026 -18
Whoa. I’m super shocked about the R rating. My daughter really wanted to see this. Now I’m wondering if maybe this won’t be totally appropriate.
-18
Hpfanguy Apr 2, 2026 +7
You’re wondering?

kvlt_ov_personality Apr 2, 2026 +17
I was gonna take my 3 babies (triplets) but I guess A24 doesn't want my money. Edit: Also before anyone complains, I was gonna set my cell phone up with the screen brightness on 100% and play Cocomelon videos for them during the movie.

This has to be a joke :)

I mean, an Internet viral meme that grew popular through a tween/teen demographic … yeah, I’m kind of surprised it’s getting an R rating. Now if it’s an R rating because it has a few too many “fucks” or “shits,” meh I don’t care about that. But if it’s violence or gore, that’s kind of a departure from the original series.
-7
Kennayy Apr 2, 2026 +1
I mean, it grew popular through a tween/teen demographic over 4 years ago, so a lot of those in that demographic will be around 17-18 now.

APartyInMyPants Apr 2, 2026 -1
So are you saying a bunch of 22 year olds are suddenly going to go to the Paw Patrol movie?
-1
turb0_encapsulator Apr 2, 2026 -2
thank you for proving my point.
-2
APartyInMyPants Apr 2, 2026 +2
Yeah, I apparently angered some people. But based on the source material, the “suspense/horror” worked without needing to go into the things that usually constitute an R rating. And for people who care, my daughter is 14, not 4.

Actually_loves_drama Apr 3, 2026 +1
I get it. My 11yo is a big fan of the OG youtube series and was excited it was being turned into a movie. He'd have been fine with PG-13 but not R. It's a bummer but I'm still exited for the director! I'll still go see it, myself.
1
NazzerDawk Apr 2, 2026 -28
I have mixed feelings about the R rating. Generally I like it, because I want this to be a serious and intense movie that takes no compromises. But, I have a son that likes the backrooms and was wanting to see this, despite being just 8. If it were PG-13, I would watch it first and then see what content it has first. But, at R, I doubt it will be suitable, even at a stretch.

wallabyenthusiast Apr 2, 2026 +18
take him anyways. necessary character development
18
Rex_Suplex Apr 2, 2026 +5
Probably be R for Language, so it won't be any different from the youtube shorts your son has already seen. You can look up why it's rated R on IMDB etc the day it comes out more than likely if you want to be sure.
5
sixthvoid Apr 2, 2026 +2
Wait until it comes out on streaming?
2
Gloomy_Interview_525 Apr 2, 2026 +5
I mean it's not like backrooms is e for everyone, feels like you're past feigning concern

Fickle-Ad2042 Apr 2, 2026 +2
My parents took me to see The Matrix in theaters in 1999 when I was 9. Literally a formative experience! They saw it first and were like "we have to bring the boys this movie is 100% up their alley"

May be r for violence.

I saw some of The Sopranos as a kid. I think he’ll be okay.
1
MisterFingerstyle Apr 3, 2026 -4
Is it really necessary for it to be R rated? My kids are going to want to see this? Dropping them Iff at the theater is one of the few times I have 2 hours of peace.

metametamind Apr 2, 2026 -4
Did they swipe this from https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/?

West-Cardiologist180 Apr 3, 2026 +2
Backrooms has been a thing for a while, all starting from a picture posted on 4chan back in 2019. Seperate from SCP lore.
2

oh interesting. Cool to see it make it to a feature film.

A kids meme movie with an R rating?
-47
BreweryRabbit Apr 2, 2026 +22
I..don’t think this is a kids meme. This is from the original basement dwellers of 4chan, I’d say 20’s-30’s.
22
rich1051414 Apr 2, 2026 +6
Probably too violent. And most of those original fans aren't kids anymore.
