the more oil rises the bigger the profit for oil companies ... billionaires ... investors ... why should they care if it keeps going up

lucasd11 14 hr ago +341
Well you see, life was peachy on Thursday and Friday when the oil price fell to the mid 70s. So Trump's buddies all loaded up then. He does bullshit like this to manipulate the market back for tomorrow and his buddies sell. Then come Tuesday or Wednesday we'll hear about how a new peace deal is on the door step of completion and the war is for all intents and purposes over. Oil prices go back down. Then Friday night Trump says death to all Iranians! We're going to wipe you off the planet! And round and round we go

It’s a lot more than “someone”, and unfortunately the real answer is going to be no one.

The only good pet is it’s so f****** transparent that you and I can profit from it. Everyone is wondering why the market hasn’t “caught on” but the market is caught on, everyone is making money. I don’t have a whole lot to play with but I’ve tripled my starting options wallet in two weeks just expecting failure followed by TACO
12
trickortreat89 7 hr ago +2
Its sickening how these people so openly are robbing all taxpayers moneys, they don’t even try to hide it anymore. They’re just trying to take everything there is left of money and value. I can’t fathom how people in the US are not massively protesting every day. Why don’t anyone seem to care about how we’re being taken advantage of?

I think this isnt limited to us people, im sure billionaires in other countries are also participating. Its time people start using their pitchforks

Oil companies generally don't want oil going up too fast, leads to recession and then demand collapse. It also accelerates adoption of green tech.
92
babygrenade 13 hr ago +28
>It also accelerates adoption of green tech. I impulse purchased an EV two weeks ago. My wife and I had been talking about replacing the older car for around a year so not a complete impulse buy, but we didn't look at EVs until that week.

BoppityBop2 13 hr ago +18
In Canada, people are waiting for the Chinese EV why there is less of a push for impulse purchase

On the same token, to some extent, governments could get involved with price controls and caps, etc. That doesn't happen because it generally results in shortages, supply chain disruptions, production decreases etc. In short, it does more harm than good outside the scope of a timeline of a week or two, if at all. Companines could sell their products for less, yeah. But they rather up the risk to their business the more they do it and they longer they do it for. Businesses like low risk, high reward scenarios. They aren't gunna intentionally take on a huge level of risk, when they could instead see a big profit. It's just how the economy works. To be as sympathetic as possible to the idea here, this is a "don't hate the players, hate the game" scenario, and socialism doesn't have any sort of modern success story.
6
Impossible_Rip418 12 hr ago +5
Also… get this… there are millionaires and billionaires out that who’s business purchase said oil and this now have worse margins. How quickly we’ve forgotten that blatantly obvious fact.
5
DEEP_HURTING 13 hr ago +4
>It also accelerates adoption of green tech. Trump and Co. repealing the EV credit says that they're intent on blocking a shift in that direction. If the Dems win a majority in the midterms perhaps it'll be put back. But as it stands it's like having a 80% tariff for foreign cars in 1980.

They’re the ones setting the prices - nobody is forcing them to charge high amounts, if they don’t want to.
-14
weightedslanket 14 hr ago +17
Are you being serious? Do you have any idea how anything in the world works?
17
ben02015 14 hr ago -7
Yes I’m serious. There’s no reason that an oil company needs to sell for higher prices now. They sell for higher prices because they **can**. Some of their completion (gulf producers) have been taken out of business temporarily, so there’s less supply. If they wanted to charge lower prices they definitely could, as the production costs for companies outside the gulf haven’t changed.
-7
LoneSnark 14 hr ago +6
That is only true on the margins. Sure, they could lower prices in your home town with little issue. But the speculators bought the oil/gasoline/etc and are hoarding it. The oil company cannot stop them. So if they kept prices low, there would not be enough demand destruction, and shortages would soon develop. We did all that before in the oil embargos in the 1970s. Prices were prevented from rising by law. The result was shortages and gasoline unavailable many places at any price.

daenaethra 14 hr ago +6
oil companies don't set their prices...
6
ben02015 14 hr ago -2
Yes, they do. The producer of anything decides how much to charge for it. Normally, they charge the market rate, based on supply and demand. But they don’t **need** to. They could charge below market rate! I think they don’t want to do this, but they could. I think they like higher prices (therefore I disagree with the comment implying that they’re not happy about this situation). Oil companies **could** definitely sell for 70 per barrel now instead of 100 per barrel. What’s stopping them? If they put a 70 dollar price tag on it, of course people will buy it!
-2
Complex-Sugar-5938 14 hr ago +8
That doesn't make any practical sense dude. Yes a single oil company could unilaterally decide to sell for less (a terrible decision but let's pretend)--guess what happens? Their oil gets bought up immediately and there's increasing pressure towards higher prices elsewhere. It's a global market. The fact of the matter is, there is now much more demand than there is supply relative to a couple of months ago. Either supply has to increase or demand has to decrease. If every supplier magically decided to sell for less despite that, apart from that just being entirely impractical with a global market, we'd just end up with a shortage and no way of allocating it.
8
ben02015 14 hr ago +3
I know how the market works, and I know they want to charge as much for it as they can. They like selling for higher prices, not lower prices. If they want to sell lower they definitely can, but why would they want to?
3
trickortreat89 7 hr ago +1
You’re definitely on to something. It’s all just a massive scam and we’re sitting back here as the fools, but people don’t wanna acknowledge it
1
upandcrawling 14 hr ago +5

That's the neat part, We don't! We're not in the echelons that matter or get good stock rates.
7
AbraxasTuring 14 hr ago +7
Good stock rates? The shared price is the same regardless of who you are and there are several free brokerages that make money on order flow. So, um, wtf are you talking about? It's not 1920.
7
xXPawnStarrXx 14 hr ago -2
If I'm not mistaken, traders will take commissions and such.
-2
AbraxasTuring 14 hr ago +7
Traditional brokers take small commissions but most people today use accounts like eTrade, Robinhood, IKBR, etc. that take zero or very small commissions. Anyone can trade stocks. With fractional share ownership anyone on earth can afford to. I don't invest in oil stocks or own or drive a car for ethical reasons.
7
dildobagginss 14 hr ago +4
So I probably can't get VP level investments or whatever these hedge fund specifics are, but I've had like \~12% or so annual returns out of my S&P index fund for the last 7 years or so. You can get in on something for sure, the hardest part lately is having the extra money to be able to.
4
ben02015 14 hr ago +1
If you want to own an oil company, you can. Even if you can’t afford the whole company, you can have shared ownership with other people. That’s the concept of stocks.
1
FTwo 11 hr ago +2
Sorry, but by the time normal people get the news the stock manipulation has already happened and you will not see much benefit by acting at that time. Normal people play the stock game and fund it for those in control of the scam. Trying to move your own funds leaves you well behind the power curve in trades. Hell, remember when the big trading companies froze trading on Gamestop when ordinary people were making money off the stock. Stick to your mild 401k returns and hope they don't trigger a massive correction or even worse, a 50% crash.

It’s getting genuinely close to the point there’s no action they could do to prevent gas from being high into midterms. These ships take a long time to get from destination to destination.
8
redfoobar 10 hr ago +1
Do not forget about the broken infrastructure. There is no way oil production and distribution (so price) will be back to pre war levels within a year. We are probably looking at 2+ years for that. The only reason oil would significantly drop sooner is a big recession but that’s also not exactly great news..

Picking fights in the age of drones is a really bad idea. If bad actors flew explosive drones into a few dozen data centers and chip fabs in America it would probably pop the AI bubble along with the economy. Drones are way to small and effective that any country could pull off attacks anywhere if they really want to. Even making them fully automous is almost benchtop that anyone will be able to do soon.
13
CryptoThroway8205 12 hr ago +2
They're not able to get close enough to bomb data centers in the US. They could bomb the GCC states if the US "destroys a civilization" and all the Iranian power plants though. That might affect American AI data centers since it relies on GCC funding.
2
wildweaver32 10 hr ago +9
They 100% could. Have the drones leave a truck a couple hundred feet from them would be pretty easy. They have no need to send a drone across the ocean or anything if that is what you were thinking.
9
Stifffmeister11 9 hr ago +7
Exactly—that is what the Ukrainians have done successfully a few times. They smuggle their drones and a team into Russia to get close to a high-value target, usually an oil depot or an ammo factory. They unload the drones from a truck and launch them; no air defense can stop a drone if it’s flying low and launched from within a two-mile radius. This type of attack could be used anywhere.
7
Elegant_Tech 10 hr ago +3
Yeah, modern FPV and Healy lift drones have ranges up to 30 miles. With fiber optic unjammable ones around 20miles.

Reminder that 80% of the world’s oil is unaffected but doing stuff like blocking the straight raises oil prices globally. So. 80% of companies benefit from this war, as profits will rise while costs don’t. Just free money! For a few. While prices increase for every product for everyone.

Let's say iran allowed them without toll maybe 10-12 ships but still the straight of hormuz is closed at the mercy of Iranian .. what USA can do it long run to open the straight ... Though will be interesting how this blockade responds when a Chinese or NATO ship try to pass. Iran argueably won as they came out of the war in a stronger position internationally than before.
