Got to give Olivia Rodrigo credit. She is doing a fantastic job at hyping up Gen X rock music and introducing great rock groups to her young fan base that probably wouldn’t be familiar with these groups otherwise.

She does a lot of great songs that have a real rock influence too (or are straight up rock songs in a pop wrapping).

I f****** love “Brutal” and I’m a Gen X dude. Amazing song.

SillyBanterPleasesMe Apr 1, 2026 +23
Brutal is what I recommend to anyone who says they can’t stand her and her girly pop music! One of my personal favorites and I’m still holding on to the hopes she goes grunge!

Unhappy_Cranberry700 Apr 1, 2026 +18
Ballad of A Homeschooled girl is probably as close as she'll get to grunge.

Responsible-Bet-8361 Apr 1, 2026 +7
Brutal is what turned me on to her music. I was listening to the Spotify hot hits shortly after Sour was released. I was blown away by the song. It made me listen to the whole album, and the whole thing is amazing. I have been a fan since then.

I have both albums and they slap. Born before the Chernobyl accident

MrSpindles Apr 1, 2026 +4
I'm 55, and spotify informs me that she was my most listened to artist (by a wide margin) in 2024. Both albums are solid, just wall to wall great songs. Really looking forward to hearing what she brings out next.

she's quite good at it, I like her style. it brings more soul into the music of rock.

Fastbird33 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Rock n Roll is just blues with a pop wrapping if you think about it.

OneReportersOpinion Mar 31, 2026 +34
She’s also bringing those bands on tour with her and exposing them to a new generation. I believe she had the Breeders on her last tour

# "Olivia Rodrigo said to my daughter, Without your mother, none of this would have happened." Melissa Auf der Maur, one of the unsung heroes of '90s rock, is finally getting her flowers

OK, THANKS!

OneReportersOpinion Mar 31, 2026 +32
Melissa is smiling in the background “Thank you for proving to my daughter I am cool!” Lol. Isn’t that what every mom wants?
32
goat_penis_souffle Mar 31, 2026 +13
It’s a nice break from teenage eye-rolling and saying “ugh, stop it mom, nobody wants to hear about Horn anymore!”
13
OneReportersOpinion Mar 31, 2026 +11
“Mom, no one cares about LOLpalooza”
11
SirPeencopters Mar 31, 2026 +28
No problem. It was a clickbait headline.
28
lockecole38 Mar 31, 2026 +12
I was able to figure out the headline because if Olivia was saying anything negative the word SLAMS would have been in it.

My daughter is a huge Olivia Rodrigo fan, and I am happy to have been able to share some of the music from my teenage years that are clearly influences on her work. Proudly got her listening to Elastica and Belly.

grimsnap Apr 1, 2026 +17
She might like The Breeders as well (if she doesn't already)! They opened for Olivia during the Guts tour.
17
--suburb-- Apr 1, 2026 +9
Yep, she does. And Veruca Salt, and we just listened to a bunch of Hole as a result of this article.

Hole deserves all the praise!

fanboy_killer Mar 31, 2026 +46
Melissa’s solo career as well. Her two albums are so good.

mzyos Mar 31, 2026 +14
Honestly fantastic. I listened to them again recently and thoroughly enjoyed them.
14
buffalotrace Apr 1, 2026 +20
Live Through This is as good an album as anything from that era. It is bangers start to finish.
20
migrainedujour Mar 31, 2026 +62
I’ve spent time with Melissa a couple of times, back in music journalism days… and she is genuinely one of the nicest, cleverest and coolest people in the music scene.
62
caitie_did Apr 1, 2026 +9
I honestly can’t wait to read her new memoir. I was slightly too young for Hole’s initial popularity but her solo work was pretty formative in my musical preferences. I think she is so rad.

Technically speaking we all owe our careers to hole, unless you were born by c-section.

Followed the Waves is one of my all time favorite songs.
6
el__dandy Mar 31, 2026 +35
“Brutal” is definitely a riot girl inspired song.
35
horadeoro Mar 31, 2026 +35
Hole isn’t riot grrrl, Courtney openly rejected that label
35
JimLeader Mar 31, 2026 +12
Okay, but same era, same part of the country, heavily overlapping scenes and social circles. It’d be tough to argue that Hole weren’t strongly influenced by riot grrrl, an influence they in turn would pass on to artists they influenced.
12
horadeoro Mar 31, 2026 +11
Riot grrrl adjacent would be my only concession, grunge and alt rock are still Hole’s defining descriptors. You’re definitely right about the fact that they were definitely in overlapping social circles, Courtney’s hubby (r.i.p. Kurt) was really good friends with Bikini Kill lead singer Kathleen Hanna.
11
hiimverysmart21 Mar 31, 2026 +8
Smells Like Teen Spirit literally came about because of Kathleen Hanna

Word is Nevermind’s love songs were all about the drummer Kathleen Hannah Edit: my bad the drummer was Toby Vail

The bridge maybe, but honestly the rest of it gives Elvis Costello & the Attractions 'Pump it Up' as inspiration as opposed to Riot Grrrl.

PermBanOhNo Mar 31, 2026 +4
I like her songwriting but she seems absolutely wonderful to work with and as a human being

I love when newer artists openly acknowledge the people who came before them. Feels rare sometimes.

I love Olivia's music despite being a dude in my late 20s and not relating to a single thing she says lol. But it's because of her style that is obviously inspired by this genre and it's just great.
3

Imagine reading this without knowing beforehand that Hole is a band.

MrWillM Mar 31, 2026 -11
Hole had one good album and a few okay singles. Cmon. Theres way better women led bands than that.
-11
theragu40 Apr 1, 2026 +10
And those apparently aren't ones that influenced Olivia Rodrigo as much. She didn't say Hole was the best female-led band, she said her music owes a lot to Hole's music. It's her opinion and she's the one making the music, so I guess she is the authority on that one.

Blondie, sonic youth, and definitely bikini kill just to name a few off the top of my head
1
CoderDevo Apr 1, 2026 +3
My question was truly a test of whether you were being misogynistic or critical. Trying to choose the most influential woman-led band is an endless debate. But Olivia only said Hole was the most influential to her.

ayoungmanfromtheuk Mar 31, 2026 -139
People will hate on my ass for saying this but it's getting kinda tiresome how her entire personality seems to be gushing about how amazing the big names of alternative rock from the 80s and 90s are. Feels a little like the lady doth protest too much

_teach_me_your_ways_ Mar 31, 2026 +26
What are you even saying? Protest too much what? People don’t need your permission to like music from the 80s and 90s.
26
inkyblinkypinkysue Mar 31, 2026 +68
I don't think it's her entire personality. She has a voice and is letting her fans know about the bands that inspired her. My kids didn't know The Cure or Talking Heads before last year and it's because of her that they now listen to those bands. I think that's pretty cool.
68
_SwordsSwordsSwords_ Mar 31, 2026 +61
Wretched take overall, obviously, but please expound on what you mean by “…protest too much” in this scenario. What do you imagine she’s concealing or overcompensating for?
61
h_smith Mar 31, 2026 +27
Yea I don’t get that line either lol

Compensating for the fact she started out as a Disney Channel child actor and is a manufactured pop star

...who writes her own music and produces it mostly with a single partner. Credit where credit is due, she is talented.
37
_SwordsSwordsSwords_ Mar 31, 2026 +15
Nothing about her career arc precludes her from having genuine love of her craft and the people who influenced her to pursue it. Hope this helps!
15
wendybird27 Mar 31, 2026 +26
Personally I think it’s a breath of fresh air. We’re all inspired by things, and I find it refreshing that Rodrigo is willing to talk about her inspirations, rather than pretending we exist in a vacuum like so many artists do.
26
QNCLXXXII Mar 31, 2026 +18
Yes, how dare a massively popular artist take the time to give the artists who influenced her their flowers instead of acting like music began the day she was born. Absolutely dreadful. /s

-36
Principle_Away Mar 31, 2026 -24
Honestly I agree, her music is actually pretty good, but outside of the superficial there’s nothing really“alternative“ about it, while that sound was very quickly co-opted by the mainstream, a lot of those bands made very uncommercial music and operated outside of the corporate structure, at least originally. It’s like she thinks that if she name drops enough old bands people will forget she started out staring on Disney channel with Jake Paul.

What a nasty b****. I don't know of any evidence that Melissa has done sex work.
-190

It wasn't an insult or reference to sex work. Olivia was saying she was inspired by Auf de Maur's work.

8
crepss Mar 31, 2026
They’re calling Olivia Rodrigo a b**** for saying that Melissa Auf der Mar owes her career to her “hole” as in her v***** rather than the band Hole. It’s a play on words and feigned ignorance jfc listnookors man
0
lalasworld Mar 31, 2026 +2
Too bad, it's not clever and they didn't word it in way where it would be a 'play' on words. If we are going to applaud a misogynistic comment, it better be knowing and clever. This is neither.
2
nothatsmyarm Mar 31, 2026 -4
I know you’re focusing on the “nasty b****” part of it, but it is very obviously a play on words to say “owing your career to Hole” is “owing your career to sex work. You could argue it’s somewhat lazy because Courtney Love named the band Hole as a euphemism for that, but it’s still definitely a pun on how badly the title is written.
-4
lalasworld Mar 31, 2026 +4
Dude...I got it... as i said it's not remotely clever. It's bottom of the barrel shit. And sprinkle on misogyny, and apparently some listnookors think it's brilliant.
