Who is this balloon salesman? And why is she so sad?

tallcupofwater Apr 7, 2026 +94
I think that’s either Tilda Swinton or Jane Lynch

I could have sworn there was another word other for ballon as gaelige. Is it just because the had the american lad on that they simplified the Irish? I normally had trouble keeping up.

I’ve always known it as balún but ye it doesn’t look right written down. It’s one I would have said in school though.

snek-jazz Apr 8, 2026 +7
> it doesn’t look right written down. that's how you know it's right.

There’s a guy whose wife has the official position of taking new English words and creating the Irish for them. I always assumed just adding a fada on one of the vowels.

SpiffShientz Apr 8, 2026 +7
> There's a guy whose wife has the official position of taking new English words and creating the Irish for them So there's a woman who has the official position of taking new English words and creating the Irish for them?
7
BlackrockWood Apr 8, 2026 +3
Yes but more importantly she’s a wife
3
Technical_Ad_1197 Apr 8, 2026 -5
I know, I know. I meant …I know…. Forgive me, oh glorious grammar Gods of Listnook.
-5
TheUncannyFanny Apr 9, 2026 +3
What did you mean? The problem wasn't grammar....

I miss Beamish Irish Stout. They don't sell it in Ontario anymore, not for twenty years.
17
Comprehensive_Yak_72 Apr 8, 2026 +2
Get yourself on a visit to Cork
2
Mildly_Irritated_Max Apr 8, 2026 +1
Maybe someday... I should be in Belgium for a little bit this fall, maybe I can find it there. Or Asterdam where I'll probably be a couple days since Heineken owns it.
1
Comprehensive_Yak_72 Apr 8, 2026 +1
Possibly! I lived in the Netherlands for a bit and I did come across Beamish at an Irish pub. Guinness, O’Hara’s and Kilkenny Red were more common

Not the only celebrity to cameo on Ros na Rún. [Stephen Fry done one years back](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KerOgbJv-0k), as well as a bunch of Irish celebs.
25
riegspsych325 Apr 7, 2026 +59
with this and Gosling wanting to show up on Days of our Lives, I wonder if there’ll be a quick fad of celebs making surprise cameos in soap operas
59
adsfew Apr 7, 2026 +139
Conan has been making cameos in foreign-language soaps and shows for a few years now. Definitely not a fad for him

ladybugthefirst Apr 8, 2026 +6
D*** Van Dyke guest starred in Days of Our Lives…a little bit more than a cameo but similar imo
6
BrianWulfric Apr 8, 2026 +1
My favorite was the Armenian one.
1
Andrew1990M Apr 7, 2026 +38
Ian McKellen did a stint on British soap Coronation Street. And this wasn't "first gig out of RADA" acting either, he'd done Lord of the Rings by then.

Mr_SunnyBones Apr 9, 2026 +2
Michael Palin randomly showed up on an episode of Aussie Soap ,Home and Away too.
2
throw_every_away Apr 7, 2026 +5
Now I’m reminded of Colbert doing a cameo in ~~lord of the rings~~ the hobbit
5
push138292 Apr 8, 2026 +3
He was in ‘The Hobbit’.

throw_every_away Apr 8, 2026 +1
Ty for the correction

Creme_Bru-Doggs Apr 7, 2026 +14
I remember Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig starred in a Hallmark movie completely straightfaced as well. Apparently titled "A Deadly Adoption"
14
GrandmaPoses Apr 7, 2026 +15
The main thing I remember is that they had wanted no promotion for it, that it would just come on and be totally straight and be run just like any other of their movies, but somebody at Hallmark just couldn’t let it be and word got out and it ruined their initial premise.
15
bros402 Apr 8, 2026 +4
That was Lifetime, not Hallmark

Fun fact - Stephen Fry also had a cameo on the show back in the day, being an English traveller who was lost and asked for directions so the villagers decided to mess with him... unaware that he was actually fluent in Gaelic. Also, there's an award-winning ad where, due to a murder storyline on the show, a character from Ros na Rún was interrogated by Lily Rabe and John Stillman from Cold Case due to TG4 also being the channel that aired that show. They try to interrogate him in English which fails due to him faking that he can't understand the language... so they switch to interrogating him in fluent Gaelic to his shock (and Nick Vera's who is watching from the other side of the mirror). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gT2dXjeFJo They actually flew the Irish actor to the Cold Case set and he coached the Cold Case actors on their lines for the promo.
10
Logins-Run Apr 8, 2026 +5
John Finn from Cold Case actually speaks Irish. He was learning it before that ad even, I think his grandparents were Irish speakers. He was in a show called An Bronntanas on TG4 in about 2011 or so where he spoke Irish as well. He speaks with a bit of a Donegal accent
5
IvyGold Apr 8, 2026 +5
Cold Case was SUCH a great series!
5
6745408 Apr 8, 2026 +3
Of course Stephen Fry is fluent. He’s too smart.
3
HMWYA Apr 7, 2026 +26
John Oliver also recently did a bit about this where he begged to make a cameo in a soap.
26
somms999 Apr 7, 2026 +17
He's no Steven A. Smith.
17
lunacyofageek Apr 7, 2026 +6
I get that reference! It still amuses me because technically I know more of his soap work than his real job.
6
wvgeekman Apr 8, 2026 +5
Pfft. Bitches, we had Liz Freakin' Taylor on General Hospital in the 80's. Lol
5
spankadoodle Apr 8, 2026 +3
There was a 2002 People’s Choice awards show where Julia Roberts mentioned how star struck she was seeing the Days of our Lives cast. She’s a huge Deidre Hall fan as well.
3
Successful_Buffalo_6 Apr 8, 2026 +3
During his troll predator era, James Franco had a whole elaborate storyline on General Hospital.
3
Mr_SunnyBones Apr 9, 2026 +2
I think Stephen Fry was in this as well at one point doing a quick as Gaeilge cameo
2
Jeffrey_C_Wheaties Apr 7, 2026 +24
I’ve been learning Irish on Duolingo for a couple months, anyone know if this show is available to stream in the US anywhere? I’d love to watch a show in Irish with English subtitles
24
Homosuperiorpod Apr 8, 2026 +29
Yes. All TG4 shows are streamable with English subs in the US on the TG4 Player.
29
Jeffrey_C_Wheaties Apr 8, 2026 +8
Awesome! Thanks!

This is class to see fair play to you. When studying Irish for our leaving cert (our state exams before college), our Irish teacher got us all to watch Ros na Rún to help bring us up to scratch so it’s a great way to improve. It can sound hectic at the beginning but you’d be surprised how quick the words become familiar, also found myself getting really into the storylines
2
SparrowCrocodile Apr 8, 2026 -2
I promise you if you're using Duolingo you're not learning anything.
-2
Jeffrey_C_Wheaties Apr 8, 2026 +1
What do you recommend?
1
Hazel_Byrne Apr 8, 2026 +3
I've started a bit with Mango languages after a long-ass time with Duolingo learning not much. Not followed through a ton, but I liked what I did a good bit more than with Duolingo.
3
mango_languages Apr 8, 2026 +4
Big thank you for the shoutout u/Hazel_Byrne ! We're proud of our Irish course and (unfortunately) being classified as Definitely Endangered, it's one of completely free courses for everyone :)
4
SparrowCrocodile Apr 8, 2026 -3
Taking an in person class.
-3
Jeffrey_C_Wheaties Apr 8, 2026 +2
Well yes obviously, but that isn’t free. And I don’t know many Gaeilge classes near me.

Organic-Ad9360 Apr 8, 2026 +1
There's another App called Sionnach that might suit you. ( Sionnach approximately pronounced Shun-ock =Fox 🦊)

ChronoMonkeyX Apr 7, 2026 +14
The Pogues were originally called the pogue mahones(don't know the actual spelling). It means kiss my ass
14
ArcadeRivalry Apr 7, 2026 +24
Póg mo thóin. Póg pronounced pogue and meaning kiss. Tbh I've only ever really heard that used in tourist stuff than actual spoken Irish.
24
HenryofSkalitz1 Apr 8, 2026 +3
Yeah, there’s heaps of fascinating ways to tell someone to f*** off as Gaeilge, póg mo thóin has fallen out these days imo.
3
Orleanian Apr 8, 2026 +4
To be fair, you just heard it here! Though this is the first I've ever heard someone say "PMT".
4
masterofn0n3 Apr 8, 2026 +4
I thought this was a 30 rock sketch I missed somehow
4
Holdenater Apr 7, 2026 +7
Only word I understood was ‘Balloons’. 😂
7
helge-a Apr 8, 2026 +16
Here’s a new one for you: The old gentleman said “Póg mo thóin” (*Poh-ma-hon*) It means kiss my ass
16
Holdenater Apr 8, 2026 +2
HAHAHAHA! So what the name of the language? I’m clearly not from around that part of the world. 😂
2
BattleAnus Apr 8, 2026 +7
Literally just called Irish, or Gaelic (from the word for Irish in the language, "Gaelige")
7
Abbot_of_Cucany Apr 8, 2026 +7
Although "Gaelic" is ambiguous, because it's also the name of the related language spoken in the Scottish Hebrides.
7
helge-a Apr 8, 2026 +4
which is why many irish just call it "Gaeilge" (*Gwail- ge)* to specify. Or Irish-Gaelic.
4
Orleanian Apr 8, 2026 +1
My favorite little tragedy in the world: I cannot, for the life of me as an English speaker, understand Scots speaking in English. I cannot, for the life of me as an Irish speaker, understand Scots speaking in Scots Gaelic.

bros402 Apr 8, 2026 -1
Gaelic

Sit down. I have some bad news for you…
1
AhhhSureThisIsIt Apr 9, 2026 +2
The last sentence he doesn't say "shut up or I'll kick you out" it's "shut your mouth or I'll kick you out". Slight difference.
2
TheBatemanFlex Apr 8, 2026 +1
[He also had a cameo in a Kdrama.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5luRy97UxU)

Handitry_Banditry Apr 8, 2026 +1
And a Mexican and Armenian soap operas as well.

spots_reddit Apr 8, 2026 +1
sounds like Dutch Klingon

Teleguide Apr 8, 2026 +1
I understood póg mo thóin (pronounced "Pogue mahone") from being a fan of The Pogues, it's the saying they named their band after. It means "kiss my arse" lol. I take it the pub owner didn't take too kindly to Finlands former Prime Minister trying to sell him balloons.

Ros na Run is so good. My mum watches all the soaps here and just got bored with them, so we went channel-hopping. Here comes TG4, and Ros na Run was on. We leave it on as a laugh, and when the scene starts, a man has a gun to the head of a screaming woman tied to a chair. Divorce drama turns crazy, and the town isn't expecting the woman anywhere, so nobody thinks to check in on her. It cuts back to her telling her ex to f*** off basically, ***and he punges a syringe into her neck.*** She gets knocked out. We sat there stunned after the 30-minute show like...What did we just watch?

Realistic-Try-8029 Apr 11, 2026 +1
Who else but Tadhg?!!
1
gcerullo Apr 8, 2026 +1
Honest to god! I didn’t know the Irish had their own language. I thought they all just spoke English with an Irish accent! 😅
1
Mewtwothis Apr 8, 2026 +5
It’s because the British attempted to eradicate the language that’s why you don’t know. Most Irish are still attempting to learn it themselves
5
gcerullo Apr 8, 2026 +2
That makes sense. Most of my knowledge comes from watching shows on BBC, Sky, ITV etc from here in Canada. I do know that the Welsh have their own language and I learned that from watching those same sources. Some of the shows set in Wales actually have people speaking Welsh and they add subtitles. Even some of the shows set in Scotland have people speaking Scottish. Never had that experience with shows set in Ireland.
2
Aquiper Apr 7, 2026 +1
Why is he looking at the floor?
1
DiceMadeOfCheese Apr 7, 2026 +10
I assume his lines are written down there
10
Dirks_Knee Apr 8, 2026 -5
TIL enough people still speak Irish to warrant TV programing in that language.
