The road scene alone justified this win

One of the best shots in a movie in a long time. It must be really difficult to make action or car chase scenes new and exciting in this day and age. Watching distant vehicles go up and down those hills was harrowing.

The right decision.

Am I the only one that thought the movie was just okay?

I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it is definitely an odd choice. Much of the intro felt like what a neo-liberal's idea of anarchist activism would look like. Definitely felt cheesy at points. I still think it's worth seeing it for Sean Penn's performance.

Hint, that’s intentional

Own-Bar-8530 Mar 16, 2026 +3
No it’s incredibly overrated

Doggleganger Mar 16, 2026 +7
I liked this movie a lot, but I agree it's overrated. It was not, IMO, an all-time great movie, but it was a good movie that was beautifully shot on 35 mm film. That, combined with it being an original movie in a sea of sequels and IP, made cinephiles excited about it. I was one of them. But I also knew people were going to get disappointed because the hype was getting out of hand.

So is Sinners. This was a weird ass year at the Oscars.

Aggressive_Chuck Mar 16, 2026 +1
Just a weak year for films

generalwalrus Mar 16, 2026 +1
How was this year weak? Honestly. When was a strong year for you? . . I will take PTA's take for this year... The top tier were incredible. I think it's gonna be historic. I do imagine a director's film with an aim to be memorable. Second time in my life where there were multiple memorable movies. Only time will tell obviously but I'm curious what I missed in weakness as compared to other years (did not care for vampires in sinners but can see how it's gonna live beyond you). Bugonia was incredible. Was Eddington nominated? That was my favorite. One battle after another was Paul t. Anderson at his best. who I will dogmatically defend on principle. I'm just being insecure because I enjoy my cynical opinions but I really fell hard for these films this year.

MantusTMD Mar 16, 2026 +2
Was not very good. I was disappointed after the hype

Me too..the first half hour didn't grab me..I'll give anything a go..perhaps I wasn't in the mood

bluerose297 Mar 16, 2026 +5
Did you make it past the time jump? That’s when it clicks for most people who didn’t like the opening stuff
5
ThechosenoneBatman Mar 16, 2026
Thank you!! I thought it was okay and that’s being nice. Felt over acted and nothing special at all.

Ghibli214 Mar 16, 2026 +1
Same. It was scattershot and all over the place 🤷‍♂️

I actually thought it was straight bad.

Tell us why

youreusingyourwrong Mar 16, 2026 -5
It was liberal p*** with no clear direction or purpose for the story.
-5
themisterfixit Mar 16, 2026 +1
That’s actually part of the movie I liked the most. Lots of movies suffer from the magical fact that everyone seems to know what and where everyone else is at all times. OBAA is fresh because every player had different goals and didn’t really know who else was in the race. It just so happened to all culminate at the same time.
1
MeatballUser Mar 16, 2026 +1
It was extremely critical of modern day liberals
1
taner1992 Mar 16, 2026 +1
Sinners was far better
1
CarrieDurst Mar 16, 2026 +8
What an electrifying movie, deserved the BP and supporting actor win

sweetsterlove Mar 16, 2026 +5
I waited awhile to watch it, despite multiple friends and family (whose opinions I respect regarding movies and music) telling me how good it was. I never read synopses or spoilers about the movie prior to watching. I thought it was really good. I loved the character development and how they complemented one another.

Accomplished-Cup8182 Mar 16, 2026 +13
The satire in this movie was not biting or particularly deep to me at all. It was well acted though.

researchiskey8 Mar 16, 2026 +7
Do I think One Battle After Another deserved to win best picture? No. I thought it was mediocre. But, Paul Thomas Anderson absolutely deserves this for his whole career. I hope this leads to him getting bigger budgets so he can make more films.

not_your_username_00 Mar 16, 2026 +5
Same, it had its moments but over all not a great best pic win.. There Will Be Blood is one of my favorites. PTA deserves an oscar, just not for this film.

Aggressive_Chuck Mar 16, 2026 +1
The film probably lost money
1
BerserkerX Mar 16, 2026 +2
Such a boring movie
2
sweetsterlove Mar 16, 2026 +2
Your choice for the award? OBAA was an incredible film. Seriously interested in which film you found more deserving.

BerserkerX Mar 16, 2026 -16
I walked out halfway through. I'd pick the predator movie or anything else that was more interesting.

MeatballUser Mar 16, 2026 +6
Anybody that can't complete a movie should never share their opinion on them
6
Huckleberry_Sin Mar 16, 2026 +1
I finished it and also thought it was boring. Dude didn’t miss much.
1
MeatballUser Mar 16, 2026 +1
I mean he missed the ending amongst other events
1
BerserkerX Mar 16, 2026 +1
Out of the 50 movies or so I watched in 2025 this was the only movie I walked out on. That should say something.
1
Sorona Mar 16, 2026 -2
I fail to understand this decision.

This is Train Dreams slander
3
Beautiful-Rock7554 Mar 16, 2026 +1
That movie was incredible
1
themisterfixit Mar 16, 2026 +1
I loved Train Dreams. What a beautifully sad movie.

notsoeasypeasy Mar 16, 2026 -5
I was hoping “Frankenstein” would win. Visually more unique, truly stunning cinematography. Oh well… 😞
-5
ThechosenoneBatman Mar 16, 2026 -5
Nah Sinners was light years better in every category to me.

SoberDuffman Mar 16, 2026 -2
The overrated knockoff of from dusk til Dawn? In your dreams…

Idk if this was the movie that deserved it most, but in the year 2026 I think it kind of had to be One Battle After Another to win it, at least considering the world we're living in. The award is just as much about sending a message.

seeker4lyfe Mar 16, 2026 +1
If that were true the voice of hind rajab would have won
