You wonder how many religious figures are hidden sexual predator.

Any position that gives someone access to vulnerable individuals will always be a prime target for predators. Look at the systemic issues in the US Boy Scouts or in foster systems globally.

Power corrupts. No matter the system, the same kind of abusive despots will arise if given the chance.

Does power corrupt, or does the offer of power attract those who would abuse it the most in the first place? Or both?

I don’t think power corrupts, per se. I think power does do what you suggest. But I also think power reveals people’s true intent. That is, I think power removes the veil to reveal a persons true character.
Another item - it’s easy for anyone to fall into the trap of a false dichotomy: if I don’t pass this MCAT I will be a loser and I will never amount to anything; if I don’t capture enough sales by the end of this month, my life is over; etc. This can drive people to cut corners, become unscrupulous, and make mistakes. People with power are also just people. But when they make mistakes these mistakes are more consequential; too, the urge to slip into a false dichotomy is likely greater, given the stakes of their power or what they perceive as “their” power. Though, I do concede my last point may be an example of corruption.

A third option: the people who are already there normalize the behavior and indoctrinate the weak-willed newcomers to perpetuate it. If everyone engages in the same behavior, they have to protect each other or else they all go down.

Given some of the things that religious clergy and monks would have to give up (not counting sexual acts) that’s some crazy dedication to doing predator things. If anything, that makes those types scarier.
19
iplaybassok89May 10, 2026
+41
Not really. It gives them the cover of the church and unfettered access to victims. It’s the whole reason why predators flock to roles like that. Like what do you think they’re giving up?
It’s why pedophiles become teachers, cops, doctors and community organizers. It’s why the Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls clubs, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, summer camps and sports leagues have had such problems over the years with predators signing up with them. It’s easy pickings. Especially years ago.

gcpdudesMay 10, 2026

In terms of what is given up (At least with regards to the Catholic clergy and Buddhist monks) - some financial independence, years dedicated to religious studies, strict hierarchies and obedience (I guess this also attracts predators who are ambitious), and ascetic lifestyles (not counting the sexual acts though, we know they’re cheating on that)
EDIT: I think we overall agree and my point is also continued with your second paragraph. If those other professions provide both opportunity and cover for predators, who the f*** are these scary predators that decide to go through the religious route?

Except none of that is exclusive to religious institutions. See my above examples as well as the entire Epstein issue, not to mention the modeling/pagent industry as a whole.
Its about power and access. Institutions regardless of being religious, political, economic etc. when made insular enough or endowed with enough power, will become protective of the status quo.
While obviously its an issue in religion, the abuse and predation of vulnerable people is not exclusively a religious issue. If we focus to much on one type of institution, we neglect the systemic causes of the abuse.

I'm agnostic, but the sad reality is, sexual predators are absolutely everywhere and most commonly, it's someone closely known to the victim, like family, intimate partner, friend, teacher, religious advisor...

People think of Buddhists as peaceful pacifists but they have a long history of horrible violence and sexual abuse like every other religion. In particular they used tho think sex thighs or forearms wasnt sex. They used to fight to the death over the best thigh and forearm concubines and have parades showing off how s*** and beautiful these concubines were. Lmao

The guy who first spread tibetan Buddhism among white hippies was a sex addict/predator who literally gave a bunch of his followers AIDS.

Edit: actually, that guy was just a regular rapist. It's [this guy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96sel_Tendzin) who was a rapist *and* HIV positive.

I don't. They're not hidden. They're made. Humans are sexual beings. We need it, and we need to mature with it. You know how everyone's first gf is the "love of their life"? And you know this after you hold her hand? And every gf after that makes you wiser and more realistic and sexually secure? That's called sexual maturing.
But these religious groups don't let youths sexually mature. They twist their heads up with self hate. Being sexual beings though, the church victims does eventually act on their need - unfortunately, with someone who is at the same sexual maturity level as them (nil). Usually someone they can control to keep it secret - out of shame. The f***** evolves from what the church teaches.
That's not the cause of all cases of pedo thru hebephilia, but it IS a preventable cause that science has discovered, yet no one wants to fix because we'd all rather hate "pedophiles" than prevent them. And it IS the cause that led myself - and the four other men in my support group - to be sexually violated for years by our religious fathers, youth pastors, pastors.
They're not hiding in church. The church makes them. And then, granted, usually hides it. Everyone in my church cut ties with me when my abuser went to jail, for example. Like... Connect on Facebook years later, only for them to say "yeah I'm actually im still friends with x just wanted you to know" (first message. It happened twice lol). Or walk by me in a superstore and pretend Im not there- someone I considered my best friend. When it first came out in the paper, I must've gotten five anonymous FB messages asking why I'm accusing a good godly man of things.
Ugh. F*** orthodox religion. If you can't accept creation as it is - sex, gays and evolution included - then you're rejecting whatever creator we might have.

This title is pretty clickbait. Saying he's "one of the world's most senior Buddhist monks" is about as dishonest as attempts to portray the Dalai Lama as the head of Buddhism/Pope equivalent (he's not either). He's the equivalent of a high up Prelate within Sri Lanka, and just a monk to any Buddhist outside it.

F***, another parent who essentially sacrificed their child's well-being and has caused permanent, foundational damage to them because they're stupid enough to be religious.
People, some crazy person ranting about god and wanting to do illegal stuff with your children is not reason enough to actually let them do said stuff with your children, I can't believe this needs to be said.

The vast majority of religious people live normal lives. They form communities, volunteer for good causes, and don't bother other people.
There are predators in every part of society. Bankers, doctors, police, military. I don't agree with calling religious people stupid as a whole because some horrible people happen to practice religion.

Abduction and detention. By her own mom. Religious figure involved, in a Buddhist-majority country. I can imagine what happened.

Religion isn’t inherently the problem but can be a tool used by the powerful to abuse the weak.
Some of the most notorious predators like Epstein, Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Cesar Chavez, and (allegedly) Michael Jackson did not use religion to facilitate their fucked up deeds.

The counterpoint could be made that we know of these people only because they were exposed, and didn’t have a powerful organization like the church to conceal them.

What religion often does is provide an organizational shield to protect abusers that most other secular organizations don't. I say most because there have been a few cases where secular organization have looked the other way for abuse. However they generally do not go so far as to smuggle the abusers out of country to protect their abusers. Secular organizations also do not have a shield that allows them to fail to provide court order documents without risking contempt charges.

Saying "well you can manipulate people other ways" doesn't excuse religion when it comes to religious leaders getting away with horrendous crimes for years before anyone speaks up, if ever. Just because crimes can be committed in other fashions doesn't make it okay to do it this way. And this way (using religion as a guise to gain the trust of parents and minors) has been going on for thousands of years and only within the past few decades has anyone tried to stop it.
-7
gcpdudesMay 10, 2026

I never excused anybody, I even stated from the get-go that religion can be used to abuse people.
I guess my incomplete point is that getting rid of religion won’t solve it, since that’s not the original problem. All those other figures used fame, charisma, and/or money to get their way without religion.

The problem is people. People suck. People are horrible. Society has bought into this idea that people are basically good, and it's complete bullshit. People are awful.
11
gcpdudesMay 10, 2026

This is a shallow cynical take. It’s like saying “if there are bad people, then people are the problem”
Yeah, bad people exist and they suck. For every crisis where bad actors exist and exploit, I’ve also seen plenty more step up with an impulse to help out in whatever way they can.
Society bought into this idea in the first place because deep down, we also have an altruism impulse, a desire to punish wrongdoers, and the desire to cooperate for a common goal. If society didn’t buy into that, we’d just be solitary animals.

There are simply too many bad people, even if they are outnumbered by good people. And good people don't even outnumber bad people when it comes to politics and geopolitics.
