> In its statement, Ford's office defended the price tag of the private jet, saying that it is "significantly less than the C$107m Quebec paid for its fleet of one pre-owned and two brand-new Challenger 650s". Those planes were purchased by the province for its air ambulance services.

Imagine if a Liberal leader bought this plane?
We’d never hear the end of it!
When the American owned media in Canada wanted to take down Kathleen Wynne (a Liberal leader and former PM(edit: I mean premier)) for being a progressive, liberal lesbian premier responsible for pushing a wind turbine agenda that benefited the most economically depressed and conservative region of Ontario (hey Chatham Kent 👋)… they are still repeating the talking points.
Meanwhile Doug is buying jets and paving the Greenbelt and it’s all good.

The ignorant description is spot on with everything (not just Ontario voters). I’m not saying people are dumb, more so people don’t take longer than 10 minutes to look into how things work and the downstream impact of their logic. Society’s lack of critical thinking will be our biggest downfall.
Classic example being how many people I spoke to who blamed Trudeau for the poor state of Ontario’s healthcare and education…. Trudeau was a useless PM, but he was not to blame with how terrible our public services are becoming in Ontario. Makes it even more frustrating when Ford gets away with this stuff.

I'm in a small town about an hour from Toronto and the majority of people here will vote conservative no matter who it is. They have no idea about a single issue, they just check the same box every time. The guy won by a landslide, as usual.

26

Ontarian here. The reason that he and the Ontario Progressive Conservatives (OPC - center right/right) keeps on getting elected is that the opposition is split between two other parties - the Ontario Liberal Party (OLP - centrists) and the Ontario New Democratic Party (ONDP - Center left).
The ONDP has a decent leader (Marit Stiles) but the ONDP has not had electoral success since Bob Rae in the early 90's - the tenure of which has left a lasting negative legacy (though likely overblown, at least in my opinion - particularly since the OPC and OLP have done far worse in the last 30 years). It doesn't help that the ONDP generally get no media coverage, and the media barely ever refers to Stiles by name.
The OLP has put up two listless wet sock leaders in a row, and are now currently leaderless - with the leadership convention scheduled for this November. Despite being leaderless, they are polling higher than the ONDP. (Though, based on vote efficiency during the last election, they polled higher than the ONDP and still got less seats). The province bounces between the OLP and the OPC, so it really depends on the leader that gets picked. If they can get one that brings some excitement - and pull just a little bit of the ONDP vote -they will probably be able to win. However, if they vote another wet sock (and there is no indication that they won't do that) - I can see Ford winning yet again.

Just to add context about Bob Rae, he inherited a ticking fiscal time bomb from his Liberal and Conservative predecessors. Their decisions had resulted in a lack of available cash to cover expenses, and Rae had to solve that problem. Any other politician elected at the same time as he was would have faced the same challenges. It was a no win situation.
He came up with a solution known as Rae Days that worked and got the province through that crisis. It didn't help his public image though. People just remember that belts were tightened under his tenure and got better after he was booted out; not that the reason they were in that mess to begin with was due to the combined efforts of the other two parties.
Rae Days became a slur, and since it's simple and rhymes it was extremely popular messaging with conservative voters. That slogan has become a rallying cry against the provincial NDP, maintaining its effectiveness as a slur decades later.
Other Premiers such as Harris, Ford, and even Wynne have all done objectively far worse things for the province than Rae ever did. But the voters - especially rural voters - just don't seem to see things that way.
Ignorance abounds in Ontario. The show Letterkenny is not far off.

I have no problem with the Ontario government having airplanes. They already have a fleet, including a Beech Kingair used for VIP transport.
Ontario is huge. It takes almost 2-3 hours to cross it end-to-end in a jet. There are a bunch of communities that are fly-in only, and a lot of gravel runways.
This is why the Kingair works. It can land on gravel and smaller runways.
If the gov't seriously needed a jet, a Pilatus PC24 at 14 million brand new (including 3 year warranty) would be a much better choice, given it is one of the few gravel capable jets and can use smaller runways.
At the end of the day, the gov't Ontario does not need more/new VIP transpo
Buying a BD 650 is just vanity.

Hey Canada, can we bring back the Wilderness World War Workcamp? It’ll be a reality tv show this time. We’ll get Ford, Trump, Bb, Putin, and a surprise guest from Hungary for a big show where they have to live in the work camps they keep touting! They can improve Highway 1, to start.

If he could only get a toy firetruck he could hang out with Linus and joke about it.

Why? He needs to fly up to Muskoka on the weekends and can't be caught in traffic.

How else is he supposed to smoke crack on the go? Tampering with smoke alarms sounds impractical

Man who says "socialism doesn't work" buys himself a private jet.
The classism checks out.

Canadians are unusually suspicious of leaders spending public money on anything that is a benefit for them. All people are like that to some extent, but Canadians take it up a level.
The Prime Minister literally lives in a cottage out in the woods behind the back garden of the viceroy's official residence because the Prime Minister's official residence has been so starved for maintenance over the years that it became unsafe for human habitation. Margaret Trudeau, once the Prime Minister's wife and more recently his mother, referred to the official residence as "the crown jewel of the federal penitentiary system." I'm not making this up.

It is actually fiscally absurd to buy this plane...
Without factoring in interest this would cost over $8000 per day, whether it's used or not. That cost includes maintenance, fuel, crew, hangar, catering etc.
It would take Dougie and his entourage traveling 293 times per year at a combined cost of $10,000 per trip to break even on this staggering bad financial play. Do you think they travel that frequently? (Hint, they don't)

I completely agree that something needs to be done about 24 Sussex, but I also understand why Trudeau didn’t do anything & Carney hasn’t yet.
There’s also no reason why Ford can’t travel commercial or on chartered flights like any other premier.

I get the notion of poor optics, but the alternative isn't to fly commercial. That would be ridiculous. The travel needs of the Premier and senior officials are not well suited to being at the mercy of commercial airlines. The alternative is private charters, which are certainly not c****. $21M relative to the provincial budget is not a big number, though the operating costs of the jet aren't mentioned in the article. If we assume the operating costs are essentially a wash with what they currently pay for private charters, then the $21M is the cost of operational efficiency for the senior leadership of the province which doesn't feel unreasonable.

Round trip charter jet Toronto to Muskoka is 45K. That’s over 450 round trips for the price of this jet, not including maintenance or operating costs.
