I am honestly surprised how little opposition he has mounted to his defeat

He lost by too much and he doesn't have support of police/army forces.

Democracys are fragile and can easily become not a democracy.

When 2/3rds of the country hates you, I think it is best NOT to take the chance to see if the military is the 1/3rds or the 2/3rds.

Ferelar 15 hr ago +12
Also of note- did Orban commit crimes as per the Hungarian law that he can truly be charged with? If he has, he has WAY more incentive to fight back. But if he gets to just retire and be a wealthy private citizen... why roll the 33% survival as dictator vs 66% death/life in prison dice?

Positronic_Matrix 17 hr ago +97
In Hungary’s 2026 election, Orbán’s party won about 39% of the vote and just 52 seats, while the opposition won roughly 53% and secured 141 of 199 seats—enough for a two-thirds supermajority, ending Orbán’s 16 years in power. Although a supermajority was won, the popular vote was relatively close.
97
Life-Memory3736 17 hr ago +15
I read that the result was 36.72% vs 55.26%
15
rhododenendron 17 hr ago +101
39% is not close in a democracy. A similar result in most governments would completely wipe out whatever party got that figure. Edit: Provided that the majority of the vote is split between two parties. It’s different obviously if there’s several parties with decent representation
101
Strowy 16 hr ago +47
Yeah the Coalition in the Australian federal election last year got a higher percent than that and got wiped in the most severe loss in like 50 years.

Meanwhile in Canada 39% can make a majority government. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Canadian_federal_election https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Canadian_federal_election

30
tattlerat 16 hr ago +24
We’ve only got 3 national parties. Doesn’t take much to get past the post.
24
OkDimension 14 hr ago +10
Often 2-3 liberal progressive parties split the vote between each other and then the conservative candidate makes it past the post with less than 50% of the popular vote
10
space_for_username 13 hr ago +8
In NZ there was effectively a two-party system, until one year when a third party won 27% of the overall vote and only got one Seat in the Parliament. We have MMP now, and there are still two big parties, but there are many more at the centre and the edges and most folks feel their views are getting represented. We have had single-party governments, multi-party governments, and minority governments since it was introduced. Right now there are 6 political parties in parliament and three of them form the current government.
8
ZumboPrime 13 hr ago +2
NDP are doing their very best to turn that into two national parties.
2
RingIndex 15 hr ago +6
And 33.7% in the UK can give you a 63% of parliament supermajority
6
Wizardof1000Kings 15 hr ago +7
Not every country has a 2 party system. The majority party in Hungary was only 14% ahead - too close for comfort. That indicates its a very centrist country and conservatives would have won had Orban not been shitty as hell.
7
TheGoddamnSpiderman 15 hr ago +23
Hungary was effectively a two party system for the purpose of this election. The opposition completely consolidated behind one guy Also Orban had a lot of the playing field tilted in his favor (for example control of the media and different rules that made it easier for Hungarians living abroad in areas that support him to vote vs areas that support the opposition), which will now be undone since the supermajority can undo all the constitutional changes he implemented
23
NobleFraud 14 hr ago +2

And this is the proof that this can be prevented from happening if people stop arguing with each other over skin color and gender so damn much and learn to see what they have in common instead.

Tisza, his party, consistently recoils from immigration reform. But it is nice to see he's not a hardliner against gay rights.
3

Despite best attempts to reverse that situation, looks like.
32
PorkyFree 18 hr ago +19
It was really an autocracy with a constitution that was amended by Orban to suit his agenda. The fact that he lost by a super majority is the only reason that he is going quietly - he wants to retain as much of his ill gotten gains as he and his cronies can.
19
Peligineyes 16 hr ago +8
It's cute that you think democracies are timeless and uncorruptible.

2
jenjer2007 19 hr ago +9
I think you meant to say, its a democracy, not the US under trump.
9
No-Comparison8472 19 hr ago +8
USA is also a democracy. Trump was elected by the people two times.
8
jenjer2007 19 hr ago +25
We are very aware of that. I didnt see anyone storming the capital in 2025 saying that the election wasnt valid.. trump and his supporters tried and failed to overturm the results of the (2020) election. They attempted a coup of our democracy. You cant have it both ways. Either you accept the results of elections whether your side wins or loses or you dont believe in democracy. He and many of his supporters have shown over and over that they actually dont believe in democracy. (Edited for clarity)
25
Polar_Vortx 18 hr ago +10
Orbán was elected five times.
10
TheFlyingBoxcar 18 hr ago +16
The people only elected him once, the first time was the electoral college. The fact that the people elected him outright the SECOND time is just deeply, deeply pukatronic.
16
TheVitt 19 hr ago +11
*Allegedly* First time? Maybe, although Putin had something to do with it. The second time, with Musk’s fuckery? Highly f****** unlikely. Why do you think he wouldn’t shut up about a “rigged election?”
11
I-Might-Be-Something 15 hr ago +3
> Trump was elected by the people two times. Only the second time. Clinton won a plurality in 2016, while Trump won by a narrow plurality in 2024. The only reason Trump is still a thing is because of the EC.
3
Kind-Let5666 18 hr ago +2
Not ""the people"" the first time.
2
Diligent_Buster 18 hr ago +2
He was elected by stupid people and fascist racist evangelicals and along with Musk and the other shenanigans where they tampered with voting machines. Counties that Kamala got no votes. Statistically impossible.

It was democratically backsliding. Sure, he can't put the country in the same tight-fisted iron grip Kim can, but his kind typically don't go so quietly.

Democracy is not a binary thing. It was more of a democracy than North Korea while at the same time violating some basic democratic principles (e.g. in independance of justice and media). Look up "free but not fair elections".

Is there a possibility of prosecuting Orban for his fuckery? No doubt he and his cronies profited big time. The bullshit he pulled almost seems like treason in some cases.
6
dedicated-pedestrian 15 hr ago +3
I surmise he'll be headed to Russia in the near future.
3
ZuAusHierDa 13 hr ago +14
Because the Hungarian voting law is absurd - thanks to Orban. They shouldn’t have gotten that many mandates. But that’s how Orban changed their election laws.
14
epicredditdude1 22 hr ago +225
I’m not. Everyone is expecting him to pull a Trump without acknowledging this MAGA tendency to refuse to accept an election loss is extremely unusual and alarming and the rest of the world is looking at us like “what the f*** are you guys doing?”
225
SuedJche 21 hr ago +113
Even conservative political analysts over here in Austria expected some sort of (legal) opposition after the election. Although, admittedly, they did not foresee that the result would be such a landslide.
113
Artistic_Concern_33 21 hr ago +50
Trump lost by basically 40,000 votes total from 3 states that is a close election, Orbans loss was so massive there was nothing to hang on to, if trump lost like the way Orban did, he would have left without resistance, people forget it took days before Biden was declared the w*****
50
SockPuppet-47 21 hr ago +60
>If trump lost like the way Orban did, he would have left without resistance. Trump would have denied the results anyway. Conceding defeat and bowing out with dignity just isn't how Trump operates. He's a huge narcissist and he knows that he has a cult following. January 6th was just the most talked about part of the plan. The fake electors scheme was the real issue that could have put his fat ass back in the Oval Office. The riot was just a distraction meant to either force Pence to comply or pressure him to leave with Trump’s loyal SS. I believe that if Pence had gotten into the car Trump sent for him he wouldn't have been able to finish the mission that day and Chuck Grassley would have taken his place to make Trump a king.
60
epicredditdude1 21 hr ago +29
Thanks for bringing up all of the other sketchy stuff about Jan 6th. So much attention is given to the riot people forget the VP was afraid of Trump at this point in his term, and there was a genuine concern within his own administration that Trump would basically seize control of the government. MAGA is working so hard to rewrite the history of what happened on Jan 6, I think it’s important we remember what actually happened.
29
SockPuppet-47 21 hr ago +17
The congressional hearing about the whole thing was supposed to have told the American people exactly what really happened. Many people who testified were long time Republicans. Unfortunately, Fox Entertainment News refused to cover the hearings fairly and without adding their spin and ridicule. Trump has threatened many media outlets FCC licenses and obviously got Colbert fired as well as Kimmel. Their crime was basically hurting Trump’s feelings. Seems to me that Fox Entertainment News should have been dealt with. They paid almost a billion dollars for lying but just chalked it up to the cost of doing business.

IAmTheGoomba 19 hr ago +3
Here is what is even more terrifying: In that case, Drumf had not fired any non-loyal military en masse like we have seen these days. In such a situation, the military would have stepped in to ensure a transition of power to Biden. Now? Yeah, we are absolutely, totally, complely fucked. This self absorbed, narcissistic a****** who is not worth the price of the diapers he shits in every minute of the day, will ABSOLUTELY claim "rigged elections" and use the military, which is run now by Drumf loyalists, to crown himself king.
3
avcloudy 14 hr ago +1
The riot wasn’t a distraction, if the riot was successful, the US wouldn’t have had elections in 2024.
1
epicredditdude1 21 hr ago +75
lol yeah the guy who’s literally never admitted to an election loss in his life, dating all the way back to the 2016 primaries would suddenly decide to do the right thing when he loses the presidential election.

overfloaterx 18 hr ago +24
Seriously. He ***won*** the 2024 election and he *still* claims was rigged against him!
24
swolfington 16 hr ago +4
he would have denied it but he wouldn't have had the political capital to do anything about it besides ineffectually whine from within the harbor of his online safe space. the fact that it was so close gave his supporters, the right wing media, and everyone else looking to exploit the opportunity enough courage to really have a go at it.

NotAnotherEmpire 20 hr ago +5
Orban is a thug. Trump is a narcissist. He believes most of the propaganda he puts out about himself.
5
Tromort77 19 hr ago +2
Yep, Orban's loss was so bad that he conceded when only half the votes were counted. Obviously, parties know sooner than it is officially presented, but still. It was so obvious by that point that it would be a generational defeat. He would have acted very differently if it had been a close defeat only. The only solution against these thugs is to show power and beat them badly.
2
MarkMew 13 hr ago +2
We Hungarians expected that he'd refuse to give up power too.

Don't believe for a second a man who has driven his country as a de facto dictator for 16 years like Orbán suddenly develops a conscience. He's intelligent enough to see he lost too much, so he's not going to stay to shout and ramble impotently in the opposition, he's planning for an escape from the oncoming prosecution.
15
20past4am 21 hr ago +28
Yeah, in The Netherlands, Geert Wilders, the far-right leader, admitted his defeat even though he was close to being the largest party here. The USA is the outlier, not the norm.
28
Pseudanonymius 21 hr ago +10
Big difference though, Wilders never had true power. He was always bound by coalition and could never have set laws, change the constitution, or for example change the entire judiciary or voting system.  Orbán actually had been in form control of power for a very long time, and many of the levers of power were solely beholdent to him. He _could_ have attempted a coup, but he would have faced instant revolution. I think he knows that it's better not to attempt.
10
terlin 14 hr ago +3
> He could have attempted a coup, but he would have faced instant revolution. I think he knows that it's better not to attempt.  Yeah, with this he's looking at a cushy retirement where he gets paid to attend speakers events or act as a consultant. Trying to hold on to power has a nonzero chance of him being Gaddafi-d.

He lost by 2/3 and also turned his own enforcers against him. There’s literally no way apart from pulling a Lukaschenka and sending for Russia to send "Green Men"
4
NewspaperAdditional7 11 hr ago +1
You are misremembering. Russia didn't send men to quash the Belarus protests. That was OMON, which is the Belarus security forces. There was lots of talk of Putin sending men, but they were not needed. The Belarus protests were mostly peaceful. Lukashenko didn't need external help except for money to pay his security forces.

3

Same.  For all his faults he seemed to accept defeat graciously. Politicians in certain other countries should take note.
3
BasicMatter7339 20 hr ago +3
He is leaving the door open behind him. If he mounted opposition, his political career would be forever over. Now he still has a chance win future elections. He is only 62, which means hes got like 10 years of career left at least. Elections in hungary are every 4 years, so if the new government somehow fucks things up so bad that the people of hungary want to go back to Orban, he still has like 2 chances to win the elections.

He has already said he is taking an "extended" vacation to the US to visit his daughter (whose husband managed to embezzle a fortune in gov contracts) in NYC (crime is how you afford to live there I guess). He will also take in some World Cup games. I expect he will ask for asylum from Trump in the late summer and live off his stolen money in the US.

To understand who is who: * NAV: National Tax and Customs Administration * Antal Rogán: Minister who controls the media, also known Propaganda minister, referring to the media empire he controls, which resembles Goebbels' propaganda machine and is supplemented by secret services in 2022. * TV2: One of the biggest commercial television channel. Fidesz's biggest non-government operated propaganda television channel. * Lőrinc Mészáros: Orbán's childhood friend who (worked as a gas fitter) became the richest man in Hungary due to Orbán. He is known as Orbán's wallet. His money is Orbán's money. **Péter Magyar:** Orbán’s oligarchs are transferring tens of billions worth of money to the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Uruguay, and other distant countries. I am aware that Hungary’s tax authority (NAV), based on bank reports, has suspended several high-value transfers linked to Antal Rogán’s circle on suspicion of money laundering. I call on the leaders of the National Tax and Customs Administration to immediately freeze the stolen funds. I once again call on the Prosecutor General, the National Police Chief, and the head of NAV to detain the criminals who have caused thousands of billions of forints in damage to the Hungarian people, and not allow them to flee - before the formation of a TISZA government - to countries from which extradition is currently not possible. I am also aware that Orbán’s mafia figures have begun selling TV2 and other media outlets at below-market prices, as well as the hundred-billion-forint "mothership" of Rogán’s hate propaganda, Lounge Event Kft. I call on honest domestic and foreign investors to refrain from acquiring the mafia’s assets; otherwise, they may find themselves before the National Asset Recovery and Protection Office. I have also learned that several oligarch families have already left, and in the coming days the Mészáros family is also flying to Dubai. According to reports, several influential oligarch families have already withdrawn their children from school and are arranging reliable security for their departure.

Orban didn't have a choice. If he didn't leave voluntarily, he'd be in jail - this was entirely out of self preservation, not some act of goodwill of show of respect. Trump on the other hand was emboldened because he knew nothing could happen to him regardless (hence why he's president right now).

In the Hungarian voting system roughly half of the MPs are coming from the district and you can (could?) cast your vote for the list of the party. Orban won his district in '98 - last time. After that he got into the parliament as the leader of his party (fidesz) list. This mandates could be changed IF the candidate refuses the seat, then the party could nominate somebody from their list.

Can we get rid of Trump next plz!?!

Artistic_Concern_33 21 hr ago +6
Trump is basically termed out, he will basically be a lame duck after the mid term and his final year will be focused on campaigning for his party to win reelection, so he basically has a year + to achieve his goals

ReddFro 21 hr ago +10
I hope so. However, we assumed he’d lose to Hillary too. He also ignored the rules and tried to take over the country by force and trickery after his last election so I am not as confident as you.

Artistic_Concern_33 21 hr ago +1
lol he is already talking about building his library, he has said on multiple news channel he has about two years left, there is no way he can be on ballot, he is already asking his donors if they want Vance or Rubio

Trump a firehose of contradictory bullshit. The fact that you have fixated on a single stream of that bullshit while ignoring the other contradictory streams of bullshit has me questioning the reason for your assertion.

East-Ice-3199 18 hr ago +1
Honestly, what’s stopping him from running for a third term? The constitution means nothing to him.

Positronic_Matrix 17 hr ago +1
Basically.

He doesn't have any goals besides getting the best "ratings". The real problem is all the people around him letting him be a f****** idiot on camera while they Kansas City Shuffle off-camera. They *do not* have term limits. Most of them don't even have terms.

The_Overlander 18 hr ago +1
He’s probably going to die before the end of the term. He’s not exactly spry

Everyone doing comparisons to Trump, remember that Trump lost by comparatively little and still had significant political support at his departure. The conditions are pretty different in the details. It was even split in the Senate and a difference of 10 seats in the house. Trump was never looking at the level of rejection as Orban.

> Orbán's fate as Fidesz leader, meanwhile, will be decided at a party conference in June, he said as he vowed to continue shaping the nationalist movement. and, so I'd hope, in court.

He doesn’t have a choice. The parliament is not his anymore, and I don’t think he is the type of person that likes to be told what to do. So, there’s that

Dear Orban, Please move to Moscow and live in a skyscraper with lots of windows and a balcony. Sincerely, Democracy

Ironically, I think we can actually thank Trump for this. He made the corruption and grift *way* to obvious for people, even in other countries, to ignore. Same thing with Canada.

Don't be too happy folks. People like Orban never give up power. He "officially" steps down to elect a new face to represent Fidesz whom he's going to control from behind the scenes.
