Exactly this. Trump is against mail in voting for one reason. The in-person votes in rural areas finish counting first. Which gives him an early lead. Then he demands they stop voting a declare him the w*****.
In reality, in the cities, older people and veterans have to use mail-in votes. Local conservative politicians know they need those ballots to win. Especially with how much conservatives have gerry-mandered everything. They can't lose the retirement home votes.

betty_white_breadApr 1, 2026

I would have to dig up the polling data—which could take some time—which shows, in 2024, the President’s biggest support by generation came from Gen X. As for Gen Z, while the attitudes of Gen Z tend to be more conservative than average, the likelihood of any random Gen Z individual actually voting is much lower; this makes sense given the fact the youth vote has typically been lower in proportion than other generations. We also saw in 2024, despite then-President Biden having pulled off two achievements long considered impossible—marijuana pardons and student loan forgiveness—Gen Z still couldn’t be bothered to show up, as a general rule. (As an aside, the fact Gen Z couldn’t give enough of a damn to support the president who pulled these off, requests long sought by younger voters, has shown politicians it’s not worth courting younger voters because they are either going to move the goal posts anyway or otherwise not appreciate the results.)
5
YeahhhhbutApr 1, 2026

Gen X support went from 51% Trump in 2020 to 52% Trump in 2024. It was 1% higher than Boomers, all well within MOE for an exit poll.
Still about 51% too high, but not quite a defining trait.

Except he’s not trying to block mail-in voting entirely, he’s trying to block mail-in voting by people who don’t show up in his “US citizen” database, which has not been authorized by Congress and I haven’t heard it explained how he’s supposedly getting this data.
So a suspicious number of registered Republicans are going to have no issues voting by mail, while a suspicious number of Democrats are going to have their mail-in ballots rejected, in what, I’m sure, is totally a coincidence and not election fraud or anything.
2
KommanderKeen-a42Apr 1, 2026
+2
Sure...he says that but I am not sure an underfunded and understaffed organization (USPS) is checking a list.
The bigger threat/risk is pulling funding which he has done before, but if it's wide-scale I am sure the states will easily fight back and since blue states prop up red states, his voting base and local politicians will be pissed.
And while that has been deemed unconstitutional, we know that doesn't stop him and there isn't a great way to correct (see PBS). So, I am not worried about that element of voting (as the real threat is tampered machines and that might be reason number 2 he is doing this), but I am worried about those less fortunate that will be impacted by lack of funding.

It is a leftover from COVID. In 2020, Democratic voters were more likely to vote by mail since they took the virus more seriously. Now that COVID is mostly over, it still does not make too much sense (like anything else Trump does).
Granted, there are also other things at play. Older people, who usually show up every election, generally vote Republican (though I would think mail-in voting ban would hurt that demographic). Meanwhile, younger people generally vote Democrat (and they work and go to college). Likewise, there are sometimes long lines at polling stations (this is mostly caused Republican bullshit), and in some states, you cannot even pass out water to people waiting in lines at polling stations, and people who work or are in schools are generally going to be more stretched for time. So, Republicans already want to make it as difficult as possible to vote to stay in power. Republican politicians will tell you it is fraud concerns for these, but those are unfounded and it is mostly a bullshit reason to make it more difficult to vote.
So, overall, it is a combination of Trump (and other Republicans) being pissy and Republicans wanting it to be difficult to vote.

>Within minutes of the signing, top elections officials in Oregon and Arizona pledged to sue.
>Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read, a Democrat, said, “We don’t need decrees from Washington, D.C.” Read added: “My message to the President: We’ll see you in court.”
>U.S. Senator Ron Wyden said in a post on social media, "Oregonians have successfully voted by mail for over thirty years, and we’ll be damned if we let Donald Trump change the way our state runs its elections. My message to the White House is this: if you come for Oregon’s vote-by-mail, you’ll have hell to pay."
>Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, also a Democrat, said Arizona’s vote-by-mail system was designed by Republicans and has delivered secure elections for decades, and that it is now used by 80% of voters. “Donald Trump is attempting to pick his desired list of voters in each state with the Social Security Administration’s help,” Fontes said. “We will not let this stand,” he added.
...
Trump’s first election executive order in March 2025 sought sweeping changes to how elections are run across the country, including adding a documentary proof-of-citizenship requirement to the federal voter registration form and requiring mailed ballots to be received at election offices by Election Day. Much of it has been blocked through legal challenges brought by voting rights groups and Democratic state attorneys general who allege it’s an unconstitutional power grab that would disenfranchise large groups of voters.
>He also said in a February interview with a conservative podcaster that he wants to “take over” elections from Democratic-run areas,
>Tuesday's voting order shows he hasn’t learned from his previous, blocked efforts to assert control over elections, said David Becker, a former Justice Department lawyer who leads the Center for Election Innovation and Research.
>“The Constitution is very clear — the president has no power over elections in the states,” Becker said. “This will be blocked as soon as lawyers can get to the courthouse.”
>Becker also added that the U.S. Postal Service is run by a board of governors, and the president has no power to tell it what mail it can and cannot deliver.
>“If Trump signs an unconstitutional Executive Order to take over voting, we will sue," Marc Elias, a voting rights litigator and founder of Democracy Docket, said in a social media post. "I don’t bluff and I usually win.”

I voted for the very first time, in a Federal election, by mail, in Oregon. My ENTIRE vote-capable life has had this insane privilege. It's very hard for me to not view this as the norm. I basically get to vote in advance of the actual election day, research every issue and candidate WHILE sitting in the comfort of my home, and just drop my ballot off any day before the end of election in any available mail box or ballot drop box. It's too f****** easy.
So of COURSE they want to make it so you can't make informed decisions. Have to recall to specific details of the measures and candidates after waiting in line for hours at a place you might have had to drive HOURS to get to, and take time off of work just to vote. If it's not easy, people just won't f****** do it. And that plays directly into their hands.

Congressional investigations into DOGE - who did they actually have employed, what did they actually do, *where is all the data they stole*?
It's also why he's gonna crank out EO's like this right up until November, he'll have his DoJ launch investigations into cheating and fraud to help cement his claims that "the Dems are rigging the election again!"

I’m not quite sure why they should even care. A Presidential executive order is NOT a law, and only applies (IF it doesn’t violate the US Constitution) to the Administrative branch of the federal government, NOT to the US States. The US Constitution clearly gives the States the authority and responsibility to run all elections. So this unconstitutional executive order is invalid.
18
ranmatoushinApr 1, 2026

That is true, unfortunately the USPS is a federal agency and is effected by executive orders, so they could refuse to carry mail that doesn't meet 'standards', and due to a recent Supreme Court decision they won't get in trouble for refusing to deliver.
So the effect of this law is twofold and one side is more complicated than just saying no.

USPS is not in fact a federal agency under the executive branch and is an independent entity mandated by the constitution set up by congress (This is why they have to fund themselves rather than receiving operational funds from the government), They answer to a board of governors not the executive branch so if they follow his executive order they are quite literally breaking the law because the president has no authority whatsoever over the post office.

I have been corrected about that, and accept that is the legal status in a functional system.
How that works in this environment?
I think the main laws governing the post are federal so Trump could pardon anyone who did follow his demands, but that might just be being pessimistic.

Fair point. Dems have been caught multiple times following the law while Trump just flouts it with no immediate way to stop him. See the big hole next to the White House, the open acceptance of 7 - 9 figure grifts, the pardons openly for sale, the kidnapping of a foreign leader, and the new quagmire of a war he unilaterally pulled us into. Considering he put a MAGA guy up to lead the agency who has already within a year managed to bring the agency almost to bankrupcy is likely more than happy to do what daddy wants, damn the 'law'.

Another false, clickbait headline from right wing KATU/Sinclair. Do NOT post of KATU/Sinclair. It's a right wing propaganda outlet.
Oregon has not yet sued, nor has any other state. What is going on at the moment is almost certainly a lot of discussion among officials from several states and interest groups about how best to structure a complaint for filing in federal court and the motion for TRO that will accompany that filing. It makes much more sense for states to file a single lawsuit join together as plaintiffs than it would make for each state or interest group to start its own lawsuit. I want to see some blue states join in this time.
I'm hoping Oregon AG, Dan Rayfield, will take a leading role in this litigation. He's proven himself in the past to be an able and effective field general.

I so dearly hope that Oregon will have plenty of other states joined as plaintiffs in the case and that Rayfield will be the leader of the state AG's representing their respective states.

I think of all of Trump's thousands of lies, the pure f****** fantasy he's created in the heads of Republican voters that election fraud is "rampant", elections are "stolen", that Democrats can "only win if they cheat" are his most dangerous ones.
We have one of the most secure and robust election systems in the world because of how decentralized it is. Listening to Trump constantly lie and just make up pure bullshit stories about election fraud is frustrating enough, but asd in the fact that his supporters eat it all up with a smile on their faces is even worse. It tears at the foundations of our democracy.

Aside from being unconstitutional, it should be illegal to change the rules in an election year. There isn’t enough time for states to make the necessary preparations nor is there enough time for all parties to have a fair day in court. SCOTUS better not let this stand. My guess is this will get struck and then in November he can cry the election was rigged because his EO got tossed.

Cozy up to religious zealots who will never be satisfied even after the country they inhabit (THANKS TO THEIR IMMIGRANT RELATIVES) is completely ruined socially, politically and economically all because the crime you committed would put you AT LEAST in prison for the rest of your life.

Here in Oregon, we don't provide any ID when we vote by mail, which is everyone. Instead, we are required to sign the back of the return envelope, which is stored separately (if stored at all) from the completed ballots. The signature must match the sig on file with the county elections office, which is how the votes are protected from fraud. If the signature doesn't match, the elections office notifies the voter right away for tge person to come in in person to rectify it.

SCotUS has ruled against him before. With even the people he appointed voting against him.
And the problem for Trump here is the constitution is pretty explicit in that states have the right to run their elections. The fed's can't do this except to enforce a couple foundational rules.
And mail in ballots have been used since like post civil war days. So saying its been an issue this whole time or not allowed would be pretty insane even by their standards.

Within 120 days of March 31, so about July 31, he wants a rule requiring States to do something within no more than 90 days of an election, which is about August 3. I.e. A State has 3 days to get approval for vote by mail.

There are already articles suggesting USPS won't deliver the voter packets in states that don't follow the EO and won't return any ballots that don't have your name on the outside so they can check it with their lists. If your name isn't on their list, your ballot won't be delivered. I strongly question the logistics of all this as they will be a nightmare to implement so goodness only knows what will actually happen. I suspect mail-in voting is going to be a huge problem no matter what as USPS does whatever his Orangeness wants. I suspect USPS is going to engage in funny business with the ballots. I say this based on the fact there was a lot of this with the last election (as if they were testing the waters or were already manipulating voting) in which many people reported never receiving their ballots or the ballots were never received by the county election officials. BTW, this was mostly in blue states.
No matter how you look at things, you know he's going to be pulling every stunt in the book with this election. If it isn't this then it will be something (or more likely several somethings) else. He will try stuff with mail in voting by ordering USPS to do things, having ICE or the military at polling locations, will have last minute polling location (and drop box) closures and moves to different, less convenient locations to limit the number of places where people can vote, might even have last minute bomb threats to intimidate people from voting (as well as other types of threats/intimidation), and if all that doesn't deliver the desired results, there will be some type of false flag operation he can use with one of his many handy wars to cancel or otherwise delay the elections. They might even send the FBI in the seize huge quantities of ballots under the excuse they're removing a bomb (or some other excuse). They have already shown they don't have a problem with seizing large numbers of ballots.
If people get upset about this, he then brings out Martial Law, the Insurrection Act, etc. to completely suppress them and turn the US into one giant ope air prison. This is the point where bad goes to worse in a hurry.
I get it that this EO is against the law, but when has the law ever stopped the Republicans? Litigation only works until they start disappearing those judges. While I can't say how he will do it, I am absolutely certain he will. I am afraid the days of free and fair elections are over, future elections will be heavily rigged - if we're allowed to have them at all.

Get 'em Oregon!
In Florida, vote by mail registration is annual. And, Florida doesn't do much in terms of reminding voters to re-register.
Funny, we can vote if we get up and drive somewhere, causing traffic and burning fossil fuels, without annual re-registration. How does that work?
It's just a road block set up to make voting difficult.

It's pretty nice being able to sit down with the voter book and read each candidate and prop as you fill out your ballot and then drive it over to a drop box. Much better than standing in line to spend 2 min quick punching a ticket after standing there 2 hours.

I'm confused... Are you saying the first time you look at what a candidate supports is when you're voting? I'm fully against this illegal executive order... But if that's what you're saying, I also disagree with that.
One of the things that got us into this mess is people do not research the candidates leave vote for. They just vote for whatever candidate has an r or a d after their name
1
AJ_GreyApr 1, 2026

City council and some and some of the smaller positions, just don’t get much media attention. State senate and house positions get some attention but limited for your district. National positions do get a lot of attention. But some of these it’s really easy to just pick a D or R and thats the plan. People
Don’t know , they won’t invest the time , and they aren’t really interested in down ballot issues. The commercials on tv are pure propaganda. It’s nice to be able to drill down.
1
SoraUsagiApr 1, 2026

No, I 100% agree with that. I'm just saying the first time you do that shouldn't be when you're casting your ballot. I just didn't know if that's what you were saying or not. I'd argue that down ballet/ local elections are way more important to impactful to your life than national elections. Because it's the local elections that decide your gerrymandered districts. My town has two town hall meetings a year. I go to both and for any election they'll send out a booklet with the candidates and ballot measures. I then take that and do more research.
