These idiots have got to stop. If you’re more known for your TV work, you’re going to get the tribute on the Emmy’s and if you’re more known for movies, it’s the Oscars. Why do they insist on being this stupid every year?

the_main_entrance Mar 16, 2026 +26
Some crazy takes out there. I got into an argument with someone who was upset that Gene Hackman wasn’t honored and I tried to explain that he died right before last year’s Oscar’s and he was honored then. Apparently it’s highly disrespectful that the Oscar’s didn’t STILL do a segment and basically treat him like he died twice.

B_Wayne_8833 Mar 16, 2026 +55
I think it's because "movie stars" are always included in the Emmy's. Eric dane is known much more for tv, but has been in many main stream movies like Burlesque, X-Men the Last Stand, Marley & Me, and even Bad Boys 4 just two years ago. He's credited in like 20 movies, he deserved his name to be flashed for 2 seconds in a 10+ minute in memoriam
55
Carolina_Blues Mar 16, 2026 +104
He wasn’t an academy member. It’s usually reserved for academy members that passed
104
Dolphin_King21 Mar 16, 2026 +9
Nobody is getting this fact.
9
TravusHertl Mar 16, 2026 +1
Didn’t know this but it does make sense to me. I hope the Emmy’s do something special to remember him
1
B_Wayne_8833 Mar 16, 2026 +13
That I 100% understand, and if that’s the case I agree with it. But seeing people trying to minimize him as a "TV actor" and saying he's never done movies is just incorrect.
13
Divine_fashionva Mar 16, 2026 +1
There’s nothing wrong with being a tv actor He did do movies but he was predominantly a tv actor. Thats not an insult anymore, its not the 90s Greys is arguably more popular than a ton of middling movies that do ok at the box office. He wasn’t an academy member either. He was always going to be honoured for his own medium. Which is tv, hence why the Emmys is more appropriate Brad Pitt did bits of tv but he’s a movie star and will be honoured at the Oscar’s instead of the Emmys when he passes. That won’t mean he never did tv, it means that he’s known and recognised for his movies roles instead
1
disabledinaz Mar 16, 2026 +12
Movie stars end up in the Emmy’s if their stature in TV roles overall is just as well formed as their movie career. That’s when you get that honor/distinction. And vice versa.
12
Aeon1508 Mar 16, 2026 +1
and in any case, he died like 2 weeks ago. I don't know when they put this together but honestly they should stick to tributing people from 2025 and if you die in 2026 you get on next year's Oscars
1
rjcarr Mar 16, 2026 +1
Also, he just died like last week. They have some cutoff where they don’t remake their tribute piece. We literally do this every year.
1
IchBinEinSim Mar 16, 2026 +1
I swear they the authors of these prices can pre-write these articles before the show, and just add a few tweets before publishing, because it happened every god damn year.
1
sfearing91 Mar 16, 2026 +567
He was tv not movies. Shouldn’t the Emmy’s do this?
567
muftak3 Mar 16, 2026 +56
He played Multiple Man in X-Men 3.
56
notsure500 Mar 16, 2026 +47
Oh shit. Definitely should had been included then.
47
muftak3 Mar 16, 2026 +35
Exactly. He played at least 100 characters in that movie. Michael B. Jordan won an Oscar for playing 2.
35
Itchy_Professor_4133 Mar 16, 2026 +1
Meh the whole played out superhero movie schtick will be forgotten over time. By far not the most memorable character either
1
PeterNippelstein Mar 16, 2026 +32
He was in movies, he did both film and television.
32
Divine_fashionva Mar 16, 2026 +63
Yes but his part in those movies weren’t big and he’s not known for movies He is known for Grey’s and Euphoria. Two tv shows. There’s been stars with actual memorable movie roles that have been omitted in the past. Not sure why it’s hard for people to understand that some actors are known for tv and film, and others fall into either category. Catherine O’Hara falls into the first category hence why she was included and why she’ll be included in the Emmys too. Eric falls into the tv category and he’ll just be honoured at the Emmys If Robert Pattison was to pass away, you won’t see him included in the Emmys memoriam, he’d be honoured at the Oscar’s because he’s a movie star and not known for his tv work (despite having a few tv credits earlier in his career)

Existing_Set2100 Mar 16, 2026 +40
I had to google Eric Dane.  With all due respect.
40
gretzky9999 Mar 16, 2026 +8
I had never heard of him. Also,I couldn’t name one movie that was mentioned on the show except I knew there was one about Frankenstein.
8
Divine_fashionva Mar 16, 2026 +7
Marley and Me is one but I only remember Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson from that. I only realised he was in it because someone mentioned it below He played the best friend but that’s kinda the point everyone’s getting at. He had a few minor roles in film, nothing that was super memorable. He’s known for his tv work
7
gmd24 Mar 16, 2026 +85
Eric Dane wasn’t a prevalent movie actor- he mostly did TV. He will be in the tribute at the next Emmys.
85
Alternative_Nerve272 Mar 16, 2026 -10
but they memorialized like five entertainment lawyers.
-10
genericnewlurker Mar 16, 2026 +26
They were academy members
26
JohnnyFKL Mar 16, 2026 +20
They’re academy members. He wasn’t.
20
yesmoreeggtalk67 Mar 16, 2026 +1
Actors aren't the only ones involved in the filmmaking process. Others have to be recognized too. So who do you cut? The award winning film cinematographer or the actor mostly known for TV work? I know who I'm cutting.
1
ItsRobbSmark Mar 16, 2026 +1
Yes... because they were prominent members of the filmmaking community, unlike Dane...
1
FuinFirith Mar 16, 2026
They threatened to sue, otherwise.
0
irishguy_2012 Mar 16, 2026 +60
He was more tv anyways
60
RiffRafe2 Mar 16, 2026 +21
Dane didn't make the televised cut, but he is on the In Memoriam page at Oscars.or g along with others who missed the televised cut like Brigitte Bardot, James Van der Beek, Robert Carradine, James Ransone and others.
21
Divine_fashionva Mar 16, 2026 +16
Feel bad about James Ransone but not surprised If Bardot wasn’t a bigot, she would’ve made the televised cut
16
bradtheinvincible Mar 16, 2026 +1
Cause none of them were members. So they put the rest elsewhere
1
RiffRafe2 Mar 16, 2026 +1
One does not have to be a member of the Motion Picture Academy to be included in the tribute. From an article last year about compiling the In Memoriam segment and who gets on air tribute: *"Campaigning the show’s producers, (Kate, Indiewire's Deputy Editor of Film) Erbland notes, doesn’t work, since “they’re not at all involved with the creation of the segment”. Being a member of the Academy isn’t a prerequisite for inclusion in the sequence – nor is it a guarantee. “Talents who might be better known for their work in other arenas, like music or on stage, will likely be left off the Oscar segment,” Erbland adds, “as the committee expects they will be honoured elsewhere, like at the Tonys or the Grammys.”* It's down to time constraints and contribution. Actor Peter Kwong made tonight's telecast, but Kwong wasn't a well-known actor, but he was an active board and committee member in the Academy and SAG-AFTRA.

That's not true. They are supposed to be people who passed since the last Oscar ceremony. They are listed on the in-memoriam page but we're not in the broadcast. >Take a moment to remember the artists and filmmakers we lost between the 2025 and 2026 Oscars. https://www.oscars.org/in-memoriam/2026
30
angryaxolotls Mar 16, 2026 +1
I was curious and looked through that list. Eric Dane is indeed in it!
1
oliver__james Mar 16, 2026 +32
O’Hara passed in 2026 tho?
32
Different-Courage679 Mar 16, 2026 +28
Robert Duvall just passed away a few weeks ago too
28
ghosts_or_no_ghosts Mar 16, 2026 +4
It is people who have died between ceremonies, not calendar year
4
mostlygroovy Mar 16, 2026 +18
Was he in a movie?
18
SpaceCampDropOut Mar 16, 2026 +6
I only remember him doing Marley & Me… I think
6
Dick_Earns Mar 16, 2026 +2
Was also the qb in Valentine’s Day I think. And I also think he played a friend character names Sebastian in something.. edit: the Sebastian character was Marley & Me. The name stuck with me more than the role I guess, always wanted to name my boy Sebastian.
2
disabledinaz Mar 16, 2026 +1
Ah Valentine’s Day. That’s the one where I was trying to remember where he played the guy with the reveal at the end.
1
BluntChillin Mar 16, 2026 +1
Bad Boys 4
1
bradtheinvincible Mar 16, 2026 +1
Being in a movie doesnt make you an academy member. Thats their criteria. If they did this with every actor that has a sag card and producers, writers, musicians etc then it would be 10 minutes without the extra tributes
1
alacrity Mar 16, 2026 +24
Do we \*have\* to do this every Oscars?? Primarily TV actors don't typically make the Oscars In Memorium.
24
bradtheinvincible Mar 16, 2026 +1
Because nobody understands they dont recognize non members
1
NotTheRocketman Mar 16, 2026 +4
Oscar viewers must RAGE about something.
4
FuinFirith Mar 16, 2026 +2
We're glorified chimpanzees, all of us.
2
ImaginationDoctor Mar 16, 2026 +6
What people should be raging about is the atrocious sound, particularly in this moment where Barbara's Mic was barely audible. And she didn't get a second mic until she sang.
6
NarlusSpecter Mar 16, 2026 +1
Melissa had sound issues too
1
liveforeachmoon Mar 16, 2026 +1
The only weird thing about the segment was letting Streisand talk about how much Redford loved her for 5 minutes. Bizarre.
1
CalvinYHobbes Mar 16, 2026 +12
It was the most moving in memorium I’ve ever seen.
12
Equivalent-Willow179 Mar 16, 2026 +1
Seriously. It's the best In Memoriam they've ever done. Of course people are going to discourage them from ever doing it again by showing they cannot be pleased no matter what.
1
Chrono_Convoy Mar 16, 2026 +15
They’re never gonna remember everyone But at least they don’t play the walk off music during the in memoriam or split the screen with an ad
15
Equivalent-Willow179 Mar 16, 2026 +1
I love where we're placing the bar. They didn't drag out the deceased's urns and urinate in them.
1
Nice_Cloud4603 Mar 16, 2026 +13
they 'snubbed' luke perry, prob have qualifiers like movie actor or academy member
13
reachingrespite Mar 16, 2026 +3
I was briefly outraged when there was no David Lynch mention but then I remembered he died over a year ago. Time isn't real anymore
3
orvillesbathtub Mar 16, 2026 +1
Nobody raged, cmon now
1
jsakic99 Mar 16, 2026 +5
People who post on X should not be considered authorities on anything.
5
PepeNoMas Mar 16, 2026 +8
Every year its the same thing. People raging over the In Memoriam segment about people they themselves barely thought about
8
disabledinaz Mar 16, 2026 +3
I’m constantly waiting for one of them to say what they’re all thinking: We only want to see the celebrities. We don’t want to see the industry people.
3
noggerthefriendo Mar 16, 2026 +4
How many times do we have to say it’s members of the academy that have died not everybody who had ever worked in the industry who happened to die that year
4
XuX24 Mar 16, 2026 +2
Every year people are left out and every year they complain. If I'm the Oscar's I would put a deadline we will recognize people that die from this to this date and that's it that way this stops happening.
2
TheOriginalJellyfish Mar 16, 2026 +2
There's no way to stop it happening, because far too many people die every year to be included in the time available. There will always be more omissions than inclusions.
2
rixx63 Mar 16, 2026 +2
He was a TV actor. Hardly memorable
2
Divine_fashionva Mar 16, 2026 +1
He was memorable for his roles in tv He just wasn’t a movie star. You don’t have to be a movie star to be memorable. It’s not an insult to be a tv star anymore. Some of the best things you’ll ever watch is on tv. I’m not claiming Grey’s Anatomy is a masterpiece but it’s definitely culturally significant
1
Kazaloogamergal Mar 16, 2026 +3
Eric Dane was primarily a television actor. He didn't belong in the Oscars In Memoriam segment. He belongs in the Emmys in Memoriam segment. Playing the bad guy in a Bad Boys movie doesn't suddenly make you a movie actor.
3
Carolina_Blues Mar 16, 2026 +3
He wasn’t a member of the academy
3
VampireHunterAlex Mar 16, 2026 +3
Ever since they snubbed Dennis Farina at the 2014 awards, I’ve called this snub being “Farina’d”.
3
Middle_Aged_Mayhem Mar 16, 2026 +3
Yes, "you've" coined this saying all by yourself 👌
3
VampireHunterAlex Mar 16, 2026 +3
Nah it was a podcast I used to listen to: I’ve been largely off those for about 5 years so I can’t recall exactly.  May have been “I Hate Movies” ? Woah excuse me: Maybe it was “WE Hate Movies”
3
the_purple_lamb Mar 16, 2026 -1
It was coined by Chris Cabin, one of the hosts of We Hate Movies. But by all means, keep giving yourself credit for it being something that “you” say.
-1
Middle_Aged_Mayhem Mar 16, 2026 +1
Next he will say he started "Hey Dean Cundey!!!"
1
VampireHunterAlex Mar 16, 2026 +1
So you’re claiming that everyone is supposed to have an infinite knowledge of every single piece of content that passes through their ears? I used to listen to that podcast, haven’t for a while, but always remembered that “Farina” bit. Thank you for clarifying its origin, and may your following day go as well as your personality.
1
the_purple_lamb Mar 16, 2026
You were literally taking credit for a term he created. I know we’re living in braindead times, but it would have taken you 30 seconds to google it and remember the name of the podcast instead of playing it off as something you made up.
0
Prior_Success7011 Mar 16, 2026 +2
Save James Van Der Beak and Eric Dane for the Emmyz. Let the film people have their time to shine.
2
Alarmed_Drop7162 Mar 16, 2026 +1
Did I see a lawyer in memoriam in there?
1
spaceflower92 Mar 16, 2026 +1
He died this year, he would be included in next year's show
1
Divine_fashionva Mar 16, 2026 +1
Catherine O Hara and Robert Duvall also died this year. Both were included That’s not how it works. It covers deaths from the last Oscars to this one, not by a calendar year He wasn’t included because he was a tv star, not a movie star or a member of the academy
1
stevefrench90 Mar 16, 2026 +1
If you ‘rage’ about shit like this you need to sort your life out

Wrong guy? That’s James Van Der Beek, another tv actor
2
Independent_Tie_4984 Mar 16, 2026 -2
You don't want a life filled with actual life instead of fictional stories conveyed by people pretending to be other people? I get it, but it's a strange hill to stand on.
-2
Divine_fashionva Mar 16, 2026 +4
It’s a reference to a movie and they got the actor who starred in it wrong anyway, that wasn’t Eric Dane, it was James Van Der Beek’s line in Varsity Blues
4
Independent_Tie_4984 Mar 16, 2026 +1
Thank you for the explanation. I'm glad an actual person didn't say that.
1
nutznboltsguy Mar 16, 2026
I thought showing pairs of lesser known people who had passed was pretty tacky.
0
seacon65 Mar 16, 2026 +2
They do that every year. Time constraints, and there was a pretty heavy death toll coming into this year’s ceremony.
2
EyesLikeBuscemi Mar 16, 2026 +1
Not an academy member and had one shit movie last year as his most recent movie credit followed by a bunch of TV.
1
itsallgood013 Mar 16, 2026 +1
The whole segment seemed overwrought and drawn out into a faux-funeral. Just give us a video segment and some somber music. I don't need Barbra Streisand singing about Robert Redford.
1
kathink Mar 16, 2026 -2
missed van der beek too
-2
Divine_fashionva Mar 16, 2026 +7
He was a tv actor just like Dane They didn’t miss him. They intentionally didn’t include them because they’ll be honoured at the Emmys, which is for tv actors
