I hope it's at least close to as good as season 1

Taste_The_Soup Mar 19, 2026 +363
I'm hopeful that it's good. Season 1 is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. I can't go into it with those expectations, lol

Fireproofspider Mar 19, 2026 +360
A big part of why the show was great was because how much of a good guy the main guy was. And according to this article, it's the same thing with the new target. I really liked that it was a prank that made the target look really good as it happened, unlike other prank shows who make people look silly.

Interviews with the directors and producers are fun, they consistently say "Ronald needs to be the hero" in every scenario they come up with So like in Margaritaville with the huge bill, they had James Marsden head away and had the cast to convince Ronald to arm wrestle Marsden so he can pay the bill (and Marsden to let him win) so Ronald could be the hero He's never the butt of the joke, all the other characters are, and that's why it works so well

I think the first season of the Joe Schmo Show had to pivot because the guy was too nice. Don't remember much tho
49
FiveDollarGamer Mar 20, 2026 +26
The first season iirc, went off without a hitch. I think it was the 2nd season with a male and female schmo, one of them recognized one of the actors from doing a standup set at a local comedy club. So they ended up making them part of the cast and brought in a new schmo.

paradox183 Mar 20, 2026 +17
If I remember correctly, Ingrid was talking about Natasha Leggero. Those two seasons of Joe Schmo had some good talent. Kristen Wiig is the only one that became a household name, but Leggero, Ralph Garman, David Hornsby, Jonathan Torrens, and Jon Huertas have also had nice careers.

Put some respect on Jonathon Torrens name. Sincerely Noah Dyck

That's the version of the story I am aware of. There was no mention of him recognizing Kirk in that clip. That's the part I am interested in learning about.

AkibaPurple Mar 20, 2026 +10
iirc the initial plan was to be a very jokey/absurd show but as time went on and the guy turned out to be a genuinely good person, everyone started to feel guilty for tricking him and started "rigging" contests in his favor. The incident that really cemented this is during a game, the guy accidentally injured someone and when he won the prize he immediately gave it to the person he'd hurt as an apology.
10
The_LionTurtle Mar 20, 2026 +8
Watching him absolutely body Kristen Wigg in that sumo suit will never not be funny.
8
William_T_Wanker Mar 20, 2026 +4
I still remember that! it was both an entertaining and wholesome show especially when the actors would give their interviews about how much of a sweetheart the guy was.
4
khavii Mar 20, 2026 +10
Wholesome prank show was definitely not a genre I knew I wanted. It really sucked that they couldn't repeat the magic.
10
sloowhand Mar 20, 2026 +5
Supposedly they have repeated it with this new season.
5
PostModernPost Mar 20, 2026 +1
Is it me or is the guy from the first season and actor in this one? One of the people looks just like him with long hair anyway.

readyable Mar 20, 2026 +34
The scene in the courtroom when the incompetent lawyer shows his video re-enactment of the crime scene. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Everyone needs to watch this show.
34
LostInStatic Mar 19, 2026 -62
They need to tighten up what they pad the show with. I get that it’s probably really hard to edit a cohesive story after the fact with the footage they got but the storyline they did with the nerd guy and the s*** lady was not funny at best and atrociously uncomfortable at worst.

stonewallace17 Mar 19, 2026 +46
No way, the soaking scene was absolute gold

"Those are some big jumps, James!" was my favorite line of the season
19
idkalan Mar 20, 2026 +8
James - "You want smaller or bigger jumps?" Noah - "Uh, smaller jumps" Jeannie - "Wait, bigger jumps" Noah - "No, smaller jumps, James please" James - "Ok, we're on the same page" Noah - "No, these are really big jumps James"

WintersDoomsday Mar 19, 2026 +128
Yeah not sure a corporate retreat concept is as good a premise as the literal jury one
128
Gyshall669 Mar 19, 2026 +160
I think a corporate retreat would be far better. S1 it felt like they struggled to give them plausible reasons to hang out.
160
mdp300 Mar 19, 2026 +88
They also skipped a lot of the actual "trial" because it was very...normal. With a corporate retreat there might be even more opportunity for wackiness.
88
filthysize Mar 19, 2026 +89
The danger, of course, is tipping him off if things are too wacky. The really smart thing about the first season was that anytime the actors get too ridiculous and he gets suspicious, the next day they go do a full authentic day of court and he's back to thinking it's real.
89
hustlehustle Mar 19, 2026 +53
I think the benefit of the corporate retreat is it’s a new job and they get to hedge on him doing what most people would do - trying to ignore the wackiness to fit in and keep a decent job, especially if it’s not like harmful shit and just silly
53
EmekaEgbukaPukaNacua Mar 19, 2026 +3
Ya, but as the above guy said… jury duty made it so much easier to keep the guy from guessing it was a setup. Doing a corporate retreat immediately gives you reality tv vibes. Jury duty doesn’t at all.
3
SnoopDodgy Mar 19, 2026 +2
Plus a lot of companies are a bit wacky.
2
Rodin-V Mar 19, 2026 +9
Guess they could do similar stuff here? "Oh hey, we're having a lecture tomorrow and need you to photocopy 140 of these 24 page leaflets using this ancient copier, then staple them together. It should only take most of the day"
9
joshhupp Mar 19, 2026 +2
The video recreation bit had me howling. It's legitimately something I could expect to see in court.
2
nimbuscloud9 Mar 19, 2026 +48
If there’s anything I’ve learnt from a lot of comedy prank shows and TikToks (that aren’t staged 🙄) there’s a lot of good willed gullible people out there. New employees at companies will definitely go along with a lot of office culture to fit in and not get laid off during their probationary period. As long as the show doesn’t go overboard with it, it’s really easy to fool people.
48
res30stupid Mar 20, 2026 +2
> a lot of comedy prank shows and TikToks (that aren’t staged 🙄) There's this fantastic old show by British illusionist Derren Brown called *Trick Or Treat* which actually brought this up. Each episode, someone comes in and they draw one of two cards - trick, which is something nasty, or treat, where they get to take part in a fun illusion. Well, one episode was based around susceptibility where a woman is brought in and told if she hits a button, a kitten *will* get electrocuted to death. The idea of the episode is showing how susceptible people are to subconscious control triggers which Brown used on her throughout the episode, with the narration explaining how it all works. >!She hit the button at the last second and was immediately overcome with guilt, horrified she actually gave in. Derren explained how the whole thing worked and no, the kitten was never in any danger.!< Edit: Also, this was a major part of his later series, *The Experiments* where under the pretense of teaching another person how to better use hypnotic techniques to learn how to better meditate, he programmed someone to commit an assassination based on rumors related to the JFK assassination. The subject went along with a lot of his later tricks since it was considered "behind-the-scenes" moments and he was just hanging out with Derren when he believed they weren't filming. This led to the major crux of the show - taking shots at Stephen Fry at one of his own shows - before he learned the truth about what happened and was deprogrammed from his hypnosis.
2
tfhermobwoayway Mar 20, 2026 +1
I mean that’s like the classic “told to electrocute a man by a person in uniform” psychological experiment. Although I heard that was dramatised and a lot less people killed the guy than most people think. Interesting how hypnotic triggers are more reliable than that.
1
res30stupid Mar 20, 2026 +1
They're all fantastic shows. Brown notably makes a point about how he is *not* a magician and doesn't believe in magic, but shows how people are easily predictable and can be manipulated. His infamous "Russian R*******" live TV special even relied on this, since he had a crowd of people and specifically used his time in the studio to screen them so he could manipulate someone into putting the bullet into the chamber he wanted. Considering the trick involved *a real gun*, he definitely couldn't have picked a wild card.

I really dislike anything "reality TV" adjacent, but that dorst season was the one exception. Incredibly entertaining and a little 'heartwarming'.

Is this the show where the girl pretending to be deaf almost blew the whole thing?
1
Bardmedicine Mar 20, 2026 +1
Yep, show deserved all the praise it gets. It is a very fine line to walk with the hoax, the satire of reality tv and remaining so positive and "feel good"

I personally liked life of prizes "*Denpa Shōnen teki Kenshō Seikatsu"* more than any other truman show adjacent media. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasubi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasubi) "When Hamatsu had won enough to return to Japan he was blindfolded, clothed, and taken to another apartment in Japan. When the blindfold was removed, he looked around, and instinctively took his clothes off, expecting to continue the challenge. However, the walls of the apartment fell away to reveal that he was actually in a TV studio with a huge [live audience](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_audience), who began applauding him for succeeding at the challenge. Hamatsu was confused by this, because he thought the show had not yet been broadcast." It's pretty messed up, but it's a great watch. EDIT: Here's an AMA he did. The documentary about that show is so fucked up.
20
Sprumbly Mar 20, 2026 +8
That scene of him there stunned from the audience and the cameras confused and seemingly frightened is still burned in my mind
8
A_Harmless_Fly Mar 20, 2026 +7
It's not all bad, there's a bit when he wins shoes and he puts them and the lingerie on and he's so excited to be clothed after so long he does a little song and dance. /s EDIT: I think they were actually the second pair of shoes, I think the first pair didn't fit.
7
SnooHamsters6067 Mar 20, 2026 +5
I mean, Truman doesn't know he's being filmed, so his private life is completely being invaded. In this, he knows that he's in a documentary that'll be publically released.

It started strong and then they eliminated every entertaining character and by the end it was just a normal reality show that was staged
7
Photodan24 Mar 19, 2026 +11
This just sounds like a re-hash of Joe Schmo.
11
RellenD Mar 19, 2026 +26
It's my understanding that Jury Duty was created by the same person. It's Joe Schmo amped to higher degree. The lead they found for the first season was kind of in the same mold as Joe Schmo. I think that's the kind of person you need for it to work.
26
Photodan24 Mar 19, 2026 +4
Even though I'm pretty sure Matt figured it out mid-season and was convinced to play along.
4
MR1120 Mar 19, 2026 +23
That happened in season 2. It was styled as a dating show, and they had a male and female ‘Joe Schmo’. About three episodes in, the woman picked up that it was fake. So they pulled her aside and told her, “We have to kick you out… or you can get in on it and mess with the guy.” She took the offer, and it ended up being really funny.
23
AkibaPurple Mar 20, 2026 +1
They brought in another woman to fill in her role so they could keep the core premise of the show.
1
MR1120 Mar 20, 2026 +2
That’s right! I forgot they brought in a replacement for her.
2
RellenD Mar 19, 2026 +12
I remember him being strongly affected by a character who was a really nice guy being eliminated the cast starting to get cold get over it and them rejiggering the show to be less torturous towards him about halfway through. I don't think he figured it out, I think it was quite the opposite.
12
gaanmetde Mar 19, 2026 +372
I’m curious if anyone felt the same - after watching the first season: I did find it entertaining. But ultimately left with a weird feeling. I think doing this to someone for three weeks, AND having tons of hidden cameras is kind of fucked up. I watched an interview with the guy and he alluded to having difficulties processing and was worried he was being secretly recorded after the show ended. Yikes? When he talked about his biggest concern being the friendships weren’t real…the actors assured him they were and they’ve stayed in touch. I don’t buy it- you’ve made up literally every single detail about your life. They may have become good friends after but it’s not the same fake friendship they built at all.

He didnt allude to it, he straight up said he was paranoid that nothing was real for weeks after the show. One of the main actors helped him through it.
42
MrJ429 Mar 19, 2026 +49
Early YouTube days there was something called Improve Everywhere, and for one of their pranks they pretended to throw a fake birthday party for some random guy at bar with his buddy. Pretty funny to watch. Then, iirc, he was on podcast, or the head guy who did the pranks was on one and talked about how the guy had a tough time afterwards - even though they told him was prank that night after eveyone left bar. Interviewed him and his buddy. His buddy was having an out-of-body-experience and was really question if he actually knew his friend of 30+ years. You can tell in the interview everyone was a good sport about it in the moment; however, I can total see if you're on a hidden camera show it could totally mess with your surroundings, the following days, weeks possibly year following.
49
gaanmetde Mar 19, 2026 +11
Yes even a short evening would mess with your head. 3 whole weeks 24/7 (And truly, much longer than that because he had to apply, audition ect.) is kind of diabolical.

idkalan Mar 20, 2026 +21
The rest of the cast said that they were just up-and-comers and that for the most of them this was their first "big break", & because there was no script and were only told to make the scenes "real," they had to tell Ronald parts of their real lives in order to make the scenes believable. So that's what helped ease Ronald back into "reality"
21
SsooooOriginal Mar 20, 2026 +7
Thank you. Unfortunately I already have the trust issues, and can rationalize how you are just acting here. "Why would someone do that?" Why would we trumanshow reality tv?? I hate this!
7
possibly_maybe_no Mar 19, 2026 +16
Agreed. .really struggled with this. It was a good show but i felt very very uncomfortable for the ethics of it, the position it put him in  the paranoia he developped, and essentially having to say "yeah it was great" because otherwise you look like a sad fool.
16
bottleglitch Mar 20, 2026 +4
This is exactly what I thought of too (what Ron(?) from S1 said afterwards about how it impacted him). I really enjoyed the show, but that made me second-guess the ethics of doing this. I’m tempted to check this out but also have reservations about supporting it.
4
onduty Mar 20, 2026 +3
For me I just felt like they didn’t edit or produce the crescendo moment appropriately. So much great stuff, but they made episodes too short, or didn’t have enough of them, and when it was time to deliberate they just sort of fizzled out. They spent more time on the fake audition scenes than the entire deliberations. I thought the show was about to get super interesting with twists and turns and making him the hero, instead it was just one hold out who caved in about thirty seconds. Then two minutes later they reveal the gig is up
3
gaanmetde Mar 20, 2026 +3
I found the whole case shockingly underwhelming. I was waiting for much more clever things to happen. The way the show edited and presented it made it seem hard to believe someone could believe it’s a real case.
3
Media-consumer101 Mar 20, 2026 +6
This is why I won't be watching! Risking someones mental health just for a bit of entertainment does not sot right with me at all. This stuff could trigger health issues that could last for years! After Jury Duty, I learned of another TV show in the UK, an old one. Where they faked that a group of participants were going to a Russian space camp and eventually space, it was all faked in the UK with actors. They did a shit ton of work up front to select the right people (tests to see if they didn't mind being emberrased but also, they all had to give the name of someone they trusted to make life decisions for them. That person was then explained the entire plan for the show, and was allowed to decide whether the participant could take the joke or whether it would harm them psychologically.). And after all of that, you hear interviews with the participants and they were STILL mentally harmed by it. One person straight up became a conspiracy nut after it, never trusting anyone again. Meanwhile this show just casts whomever they think is going to be fun and there seems to be no (after-)care taken for the participant. James Marsden supported the Jury Duty guy on his own after the show: that should be the job of a paid psychiatrist.
6

11
Gigglypoof3809 Mar 20, 2026 +2
You see, this is why if I did a Truman show type deal I’d have them wake up in a pile of straw and they time traveled back to the medieval era. Get trained English actors and all of that. Build a medieval village and castle. Include people they know in the scenario after some actors training. Then a week later they wake up back in their bed. At least there’s a separation between reality and the crazy shit I put them through.

2) It probably costs a shitload of money to build a climate-controlled dome over Burbank, CA.
24
Channel250 Mar 19, 2026 +10
Expensive? That doesn't even scratch it. The dome can be *seen from space*. It's not just climate controlled either, it's environment controlled. Has its own man made weather conditions. Storms large enough to capsize a boat and kill a man. That entire part of the bay area is a goddamned *pool!* The part of the story that I always wanted to know was...what was the real world like? My guess is it's fairly bleak. Pick your catastrophe, but I always imagined the Truman Show being created for the same reasons as the Coliseum in ancient Rome.

This seems like an utterly immoral thing.
16
CardiganPanda Mar 20, 2026 +22
I’m going to be that person who comments without reading the article, but I heard the premise explained on a podcast recently and was horrified. Is it true that instead of jury duty, it’s a new employee recently hired at a fake company?! So this person, trying to make a living, having sent out god knows how many resumes, and is so excited to finally land one, will find out in two weeks that they do not, in fact, have a job?! And I can’t imagine the paranoia one would feel after finding out. I’d question every single person that I interacted with, and be suspicious of their motives or authenticity. I really hate it.
22
shizarou Mar 20, 2026 +22
I mean it says he was a temp hired via Craig’s list specifically for the retreat so it seems he always knew he was hired for an event as opposed to a long term contract.
22
CardiganPanda Mar 20, 2026 +2
Thanks for explaining! I just heard “job” in the description and don’t want to hear more, but “temp only for the retreat” is better. Probably should have learned more before whining. Now that leaves my only objection being that I don’t think people should be recorded without their consent :) and then coerced into the public spotlight because they need the money. But also, I’m generally a wet blanket/buzzkill, so to each their own.
2
SnooHamsters6067 Mar 20, 2026 +6
He is told that he's hired as a temp to accompany a company on their annual retreat, which will be filmed by a documentary. So he did agree to being filmed. If season 1 is anything to go by, he'll also be awarded 100k at the end. I think the only big moral downside of this would be the potential paranoia of having been lied to and having made friends which have at least partially been fake. I do think there are also a few instances of hidden cameras, but those are never in any place where he would be completely private and alone.
6
gilbatron Mar 20, 2026 +3
He agreed to being a temp background person on a documentary. That's very, very, far from being the center of this utter insanity.

You can see in the clips they’re actively interviewing him for the documentary. So he knows he’s not just a background character.

Blablablack Mar 20, 2026 +5
They gave the guy a $100,000 cash prize at the end of the first season at least, and I think it’s supposed to be a temp position in the new season

Thank you for this information! That does change things. I was only going off what I heard from the description in the podcast, and they said “job”, and then I didn’t read the article because I didn’t want to hear more about something that was making me uncomfortable. I probably should have realized they wouldn’t do that, but hey, there have been some pretty exploitive reality shows out there in the past. I still hate the concept, but now mainly because I would literally die if this was done to me and put on national television :)

*The Adjustment Bureau* based on *the Adjustment Team* *The Bourne* series.. *The Truman Show* *Dark City* *Great Expectations* We've explored the concept enough in fiction I am confident to claim it is likely social manipulations have existed for quite some time to varying degrees and we are simply horrified by the purest commodification of them, so far.

You know they end up getting money, right? Like a lot more than his yearly salary would’ve been for 2 weeks. He also gets free exposure to thousands of employers…
-2
gilbatron Mar 20, 2026 +4
Free exposure? It's insane to assume that anyone wants that.
4
CardiganPanda Mar 20, 2026 +1
Convincing things I’ve learned from responses: it was a short temp job, and they get quite a bit of money. Unconvincing things I’ve heard: free exposure to employers……………

sean2mush Mar 20, 2026 +1
I doubt anyone is going to hire someone because they were on a tv show. Plus this was all filmed months ago he has probably found a new job by now.

Welcome2Banworld Mar 20, 2026 -1
Dude gets $150,000 at the end. I doubt he gives a shit.

sean2mush Mar 20, 2026
Most TV is. Still enjoy watching it.

When though?
2
tfhermobwoayway Mar 20, 2026 +2
I’ve always wondered with these shows. What happens if you don’t consent to being filmed? Like, they do the entire show and then you say “I don’t want my likeness being used for money” and then they have to throw all the footage out? Would you have a case?
2
Media-consumer101 Mar 20, 2026 +1
With this one they say they are making a documentary. The target just doesn't know they are the main character instead of one of the people filmed for the documentary.

Kind of like a cross between the movie BowFinger with Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy, and the old Candid Camera show with Allen Funt

CiDevant Mar 19, 2026 +2
"The Joe Shmo Show" was one of my favorite shows ever.
2
ReleventReference Mar 20, 2026 +6
WHAT IS GOING ON?!
6
crackenpuff Mar 20, 2026 +4
I thought this was about The Joe Schmo Show when I read the title. That season 1 was amazing.
4
flashmeterred Mar 20, 2026 +4
The Joe schmo show is back?
4
KeremyJyles Mar 20, 2026 +2
The hoax is getting people to believe that nonsense, which would be a moral, legal and practical *nightmare*.
2
talking_fake_tongues Mar 20, 2026 +2
Joe Schmo was better
2
RIPGoblins2929 Mar 20, 2026 +1
I thought this was going to be a reboot of the Joe Schmo show. Which famously kind of fucked up the unwitting lead.

evo311 Mar 20, 2026 +1
Just like last season, people don't act like they are on The Office in real life. There's no way possible that the the "non-actor" character doesn't know this. It's insane.

Exactly there’s actually no way he wouldn’t have caught on fairly quickly
1
TeacherOfThingsOdd Mar 21, 2026 +1
I hope we get more amazing lines like, "I'm going to let him cum on my shoulder!"

Season 3, full on Truman show?

Current--Anything Mar 19, 2026 -3
This show is so f****** toxic. I'm astounded that people lack such basic critical thinking to see how dangerous it is
-3
MicrofoneAssassin Mar 20, 2026
Have you watched it?
0
Current--Anything Mar 20, 2026 +4
Yeah. It's manipulative and fucked up
4
MicrofoneAssassin Mar 20, 2026 +1
I found it to be quite wholesome.
1
Current--Anything Mar 20, 2026 +1
Welp, let's hope someone dupes you for months, puts it on international streaming, and puts you in a position to pretend to be happy about it.
1
MicrofoneAssassin Mar 20, 2026 +1
If I came out of it with $100,000 and a bunch of new friends I made along the way, I’d be cool with it. I hope it does not happen to you as the show only works if they get a really cool person. I’m guessing you would ruin it.
1
Current--Anything Mar 20, 2026 +1
You actually believe they're real-life friends? Buddy. I have a bridge to sell you
1
MicrofoneAssassin Mar 21, 2026 +1
You’re just mad because you know a show about you would suck. It works because nobody there thinks like you
1
Current--Anything Mar 21, 2026 +1
>You’re just mad because you know a show about you would suck I'm not mad at all. And a show about me wouldn't exist because $100,000 is a fraction of what I earn in a year, and I'd sue the production company into oblivion. >It works because nobody there thinks like you We agree on this. The show works because they carefully selected a pawn who wouldn't object to being manipulated
1
MicrofoneAssassin Mar 21, 2026 +1
Oh my god this is gold. Thanks for proving my point, bud. I don’t know if you understand how perfect this is. I was trying to say it wouldn’t work because you’re probably not a fun guy and your response was “erhm actually I’m too rich and I would sue everybody.” You sound like someone with more money than friends and it’s sad.

AKA we copied the Joe Schmoe show and made it worse edit: lot of sensitive little fellas watch Jury Duty apparently
-18
Scuggs Mar 19, 2026 +16
Jury Duty is f****** great, you’ve obviously never seen it
16
FriendshipStatus4824 Mar 19, 2026 -11
They copied something that has been done 4 times already, one season of which is one of the best seasons of all reality TV.
-11
Scuggs Mar 19, 2026 +9
You haven’t watched it, how do you know it’s worse? Is it wrong to rehash an idea that was used thirty years ago if you do it well?
9
FriendshipStatus4824 Mar 20, 2026 -7
Funny that you are so personally invested
-7
Scuggs Mar 20, 2026 +2
Ok sure but ditto cause you’re still in the thread except you’re so interested in something that you’ve literally never seen and that’s so f****** lame lmao
2
FriendshipStatus4824 Mar 20, 2026 -7
Are you going to lose sleep over all of this lmao
-7
sean2mush Mar 20, 2026 +2
Joe Schmo fans are really loud about how much they enjoy it.
2
FriendshipStatus4824 Mar 20, 2026 +1
Are you going to cry and have a breakdown about it like the other guy?
1
gaytechdadwithson Mar 19, 2026 -36
Yeah, I’m calling bullshit on him “not knowing” did they find someone living in a cave or that just woke up from a 30 year coma?
-36
TwoBlackDots Mar 19, 2026 +6
Why would that be necessary?
6
gaytechdadwithson Mar 19, 2026 -35
