The state Supreme Court ruled that mandatory life without parole for second degree murder like being a lookout or a getaway driver is unconstitutional. This is a massive shift because it finally separates intent from outcome. Until now, Pennsylvania was one of the last places where a 19 years old sitting in a car could get the same die in prison sentence as the person who pulled the trigger. This ruling doesn't just open the door for 1,100 resentencing cases; it forces the legal system to admit that one size fits all justice is often just state sanctioned cruelty.

The more severe the penalty, the more careful you need to be with it. How many innocent people has the US government mistrailed, put on death row and executed? No government should take innocent people off the street and kill them. But the US still does this. It's not worth killing innocents just to inflict the highest penalty on the guilty. Can't undo a death sentence.
