This is more to do with rising total cost of ownership rather than a defence pact i.e. please maintain 60 year old equipment for us.

Correct. It’s not really a defense pact. It’s more of a logistics agreement. Russia isn’t *permanently* stationing 3000 troops within India, but now they’re allowed to rotate up to 3000 troops for things like *temporary* port calls, repairs, resupply, exercises, etc. India has similar agreements with nations like the US, France, Australia, Japan, etc. This follows the trend of: India doesn’t really choose sides, it chooses India.

This is nothing new, I don't know why these news agency trying to milk the clout. Friendship and relos treaty was signed and been effect since during the cold war era when the western countries unfairly attacked india.

It was I think indo pak war 1971, pakistan attacked india. West supported pakistan for God knows why, naval blockades using nuclear ships by usa and uk, nixon admin, soviets Sent there nuclear submarines. Bangldesh got its independence from this.

during the Bangladesh independence war of 1971, the US-UK combined demanded India not help liberate Bangladesh from Pakistan. If India did so, theh would sent a fleet then land invade. The 7th fleet, I think, was brought into the Bay of Bengal. (At the same time, Ukraine was sending tanks and ammunition to Pakistan) As a response, Russia brought it's Nuclear sub fleet to stop the 7th fleet in its tracks and did so successfully without a shot fired. This ultimately lead to the liberation of Bangladesh from the tyrannical Pakistan which was had already killed and displaced millions of Bengalis from there, especially Sylhetis

No direct attack was made militarily, I believe.OPs referencing the indirect support to Pakistan with military and monetary aid. There were some American officers who helped fight against India as well.

No it was a military attack the USA along with the UK sent it's 7th fleet towards india in support of pakistan but was warded off by the USSR which sent it's nuclear submarines in the bay of bengal signalling if they attack India USSR will strike back in place of India.

it was the Russia part of the USSR, as by then, the federation was already very fragmented. This can be shown by Ukraine at the same time sending ammunitions and a few tanks to Pakistan.

What could India possibly gain from a European military base

India buys a lot of Russian weapons. They are huge trading partners. Why is this a surprise?

It's just good business

I am indian and I still don't get it. Don't we stay out of any alliance?
-14
Khamvom Apr 20, 2026 +20
It’s not an alliance. It’s more of a logistics agreement. India-Russia gets access to each other’s bases for things like repairs, refueling, resupply, etc. Think of it like them setting up a “pit stop” or “gas station” deal. Russia wouldn’t be permanently stationing 3000 troops in India, but they’d be allowed to rotate up to 3000 troops for things like temporary port calls , exercises, etc. India has similar agreements with nations like the US, France, Australia, Japan, etc. India doesn’t really choose sides, it chooses India.

You are not missing anything. We have fairly good relations with the USA, Israel and Iran. As the official stance of the Govt of India is to not take sides in conflicts, it allows India to have deals with both Russia and Ukraine.

We have similar deals with a few more countries. It's more to deal with logistics than troops or equipment on ground.

India will never take ukraines side (who gave arms to Pakistan during indo-pak wars) compared to Russia (who brought a fleet to stop the us-uk fleet from attacking) though today, relations are better than the 1900s, India is for India and nothing else

Pani_ki_bottle Apr 22, 2026 +1
No no we will not , we support Ukraine. If you ask us do you support us, we will say yes. If you need medical aid or food related aid we'll say yes. And that's about it, no ending relations w your enemy or coming to fight for you pls.

This is why I feel the outsourcing of IT to India is quite dangerous for the US India is not an ally and they could compromise many systems.
-33
yaaro_obba_ Apr 20, 2026 +32
As if the US has ever been trustworthy to India's concerns. You are absolutely welcome to stop outsourcing your jobs to India.

Yeah It seems we buddy with your enemies as well so I dont blame you for feeling that way. Think corporations only care about $$$ so I doubt the outsourcing will stop.  I would much rather India and the us work together and be friends but Russia is just such a danger.

blud you guys literally fund pakistan keep giving them weapons despite then backstabbing u on Taliban and isis issue , you know they fund terrorism yet you continue the support? they share your tech with Chinese as well , idk why are you so obsessed with supporting Pakistan and then proceed to say "I would much rather like India and USA work together"

1_________________11 Apr 24, 2026 +1
Yeah hence why I said I dont blame you guys. Shit Pakistan had OBL under their noses for so long. The only thing I can think of is we play both sides to keep you both looking at each other. Idk

MasalaBaigan Apr 24, 2026 +1
USA kinda needs pakistan in its control so to make sure China doesn't get to middle East through pakistan Till 2018 India USA relations re stronger than ever before but Trump put everything in vain , now he's literally making racist remarks against Indians , maybe maybe maybe a president shouldn't be doing that

Hah couldn't agree with you more. He's doing irreversible damage to our country and our standing in the world.
1
MasalaBaigan Apr 24, 2026 +1
well the only thing saving America is that it's miles ahead of others in most tecnology so anyone can't really do something about it rn , next president after Trump already has a large burden which is only gonna increase

Pani_ki_bottle Apr 22, 2026 +6
Oh no why is India not our ally after we sponsored their enemy for decades , what's wrong with them

CurtisLeow Apr 20, 2026 -34
India is an authoritarian state that is more than happy to partner with Russia. That's why Russian and Indian news sources aren't reliable.
