How is this legal

freelanceisart Apr 6, 2026 +509
Because where we are right now laws don’t matter and the rules don’t apply as long as you have enough zeroes in your account.

“Where we are right now” Did you just recently learn of Citizens United. America has been an Oligarchy for decades.

lucasd11 Apr 6, 2026 +60
Ehh, they used to atleast *try* to hide it. In the past 5 or so years it's more or less "here's a new corporate monolith, deal with it peasants"
60
Opening-Tailor7275 Apr 6, 2026 +2
Given every 4 years people vote for the representative of the 1% class to put in power. In 2005, they found the will of the 99% is irrelevant to Congress. I don’t know how hard they are hiding it.

Yes but trump is pulling the strings now. Literally anything goes.
24
logicality77 Apr 6, 2026 +11
> trump is pulling the strings now Lol, Trump is a useful idiot for a small group of people with too much money and nutty ideologies who will do anything to get a fraction of their wealth.
11
PhilLesh311 Apr 6, 2026 +5
Trump is a useful idiot for Putin And Netanyahu. Trump is absolutely part of that rich elite that you speak of. He’s benefiting as much as anyone on that front. He’s made billions in 1 year.
5
Mind1827 Apr 6, 2026 +1
Obama used zillions of dollars to help out failing banks and the auto industry. Socialism for the rich. I will say, Biden actually got the antitrust ball rolling with Lina Khan, which is why I largely think he's been the best president in the last 40 something years.
1
PhilLesh311 Apr 6, 2026 +3
Obama did what he had to do to save the car industry. The car industry and America go hand in hand. Think of the millions of middle class Americans that would’ve lost their jobs if the car industry went under. Obama spent a lot but got alot out of it. Trump is just literally stealing money for himself. Manipulating the stock market. Dropping meme coins. Taking 10 billion for his peace committee whilst attacking other countries. Obama had to spend to correct 8 years of George bush that didn’t pay for any of the things he passed. Biden had to correct trumps wrongs. Both of them had to use their entire presidency fixing republican created problems.

[You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations, and peoples.](https://youtu.be/yuBe93FMiJc?si=KfejTYc4wyVt0mPb) There are no nations, there are no peoples, there are no Russians, there are no Arabs, there are no third worlds, there is no West! There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion of dollars! Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, reichmarks, rins, rubles, pounds and shekels! It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic and sub-atomic and galactic structure of things today!

Because we haven’t been electing people who want to break up monopolies and most recently we decided to just go ahead and hand over power to all three branches of government to people who want no regulation (or democracy) at all.

I don’t really see how letting Netflix have it would be any less problematic from a monopoly stand point.

They have the money, it's that Larry was extremely cautious about this so he had to distribute risk among his corrupt Saudi buddies. It's perfectly normal in this timeline.

MAGA views America as the ultra wealthy elite. The American citizens are assets/products. We are being sold, but that was always the plan.
4

Now you know what it's like. So many of our companies in the UK are owned by Americans. They are bought, stripped of what makes them great so the new owners can squeeze out as much profit as possible. RIP Cadburys.

> Paramount Skydance, led by David Ellison, has received commitments of nearly $24 billion to back its takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery from three Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds, the Wall Street Journal reported. > Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) agreed to provide about $10 billion to Paramount, with the state-controlled funds of Qatar and Abu Dhabi providing the remainder of the $24 billion, the Journal reported, citing anonymous sources.

RoddyViper Apr 6, 2026 +33
Is this actually going to end up going through, or will it run into problems that end up preventing it? I don't even mean being stopped by anti-monopoly politicians (lol), I mean with the amount of debt they're going to be in. I'm not business-savvy enough to get how it all works but somebody else said Netflix "pulling out" might have just been a tactical retreat and they'll try again if/when this goes belly-up.
33
SgtRedRum518 Apr 6, 2026 +41
At this point with paramount’s absolute dogshit slate they can’t go belly up soon enough :(
41
riegspsych325 Apr 6, 2026 +4
netflix could buy them up in a few years anyway
4
enjoythesilence-75 Apr 6, 2026 +1
Or they will just give it to Jared.
1
Ironsam811 Apr 6, 2026 +27
Mostly likely it will go through, become a very cash strapped debt ridden company that will need to cut costs quick and deep. Expect obvious layoffs, reduced content, the incorporation of AI into news and leisure content, higher pricing and the possibility that they will sell off assets in about 2 years. Be interesting to see if Harry Potter actually makes it to season 7.
27
Firerhea Apr 6, 2026 +4
They're not even committing to*annual* seasons of the Harry Potter series. Open question if it makes it to 2 or 3.
4
Morgan-Moonscar Apr 6, 2026 +1
John Lithgow isn't gonna last forever while they d*** around. They'll end up having to follow the films and recast Dumbledore.
1
ButtPlugForPM Apr 6, 2026 +1
i mean to be fair on that front it's not possible 2 of the episodes for season 1 are over hour and 20 minutes almost movie length and they take almost a year to produce. they could be filming back to back but even with the vfx works and post production u would be lucky to have a season done in 14 monhts
1
EmperorDxD Apr 7, 2026 +1
That show was never going past season 3

Oracle (Ellison’s daddy’s company who’s backing this) just fired 30k people via email last week. And everybody who’s ever bought WB has eventually run it into the ground and needed to sell.
13
TheCreativeComicFan Apr 6, 2026 +1
Hopefully the SAG, the WGA or any of the prominent actors/writers/directors/etc. that are firmly anti-Trump/anti-Ellison (of which there’s an abundance) could take a stand against this merger to prevent Trump from having sway over the entertainment industry and work to somehow prevent it by whatever means necessary.

whydontyousuckmyball Apr 6, 2026 +2
I watched an interview with the ruler of Qatar or Dubai, something like that. The interviewer was asking about the islands and sky scrapers the ruler was having built in and around Dubai (the Burj Kalifa, the Palm Islands, The World islands). The ruler acknowledged that theywere going to run out of oil eventually and he wanted a future for his country. They had c**** labor and c**** building material, so he decided to go for tourism and wealthy people to live there. I am guessing buying into a huge media empire would also help keep revenue flowing. Especially if you could persuade people to film in a foreign country with tax incentives, c**** labor, and cheaper extras.

WB is a huge lot. There are crews that work there but the facilities just to run the lot probably involves a thousand if not more jobs. I feel like Trump and his cronies are trying to further destabilize the entertainment industry in California to undermine its economy.
2

So now China, and some Arab countries own most (all?} of the media in the US. Expecting our movies and TV to change tone and tune pretty soon. Democracy bad, surveillance good. The Empire are the good guys in Star Wars, fighting the terrorist rebels. Handmaid's Tale is a documentary, not a cautionary tale. All so a couple of billionaires can make a couple more billions.

This is where I give up stupid Paramount Skydance and quite possibly shows all together. Because if executives and investors think this is how the best art is made, they are in for a helluva ride. Practically a network that’s positioned for your great grandparents with a world view that’s made for the silent generation. That’s what we are getting here. Books are better. Going outside is beautiful. Dinner with friends and family, the best. Do anything but support rich people who don’t know anything about entertainment or art.

It has so much debt there’s a very good chance they won’t be able to pay off all the debt there’s new company carries. In my opinion it just doesn’t produce anywhere near enough cash to pay all its debt. Their investment could go to zero because of it. Netflix will then take over the company for pennies on the dollar.
