Strange to go out of their way to cast Barry, only to have the character recast for the show..why not just cast Bell for the movie and show?

Probably because they want to shoot it while Barry is committed to being Ringo.

Recasting this character 3 times now is certainly a choice lol.

Technically, isn’t it the second “recast”?

slug1590 Apr 2, 2026 +9
I guess they’re considering the young Duke Shelby in the series played by Conrad Khan.

Which would make it the third cast but the second recast

Barry had a middling performance,  but he wasn't given much to be fair. Honestly, this thing was cash grab after the first couple seasons however with the stellar Cillian Murphy performance I felt like most people didn't mind. Now you remove that which was the only reason to watch the show.  Not worth watching if the writing quality stays the same.

I remember being massively into Boardwalk Empire. And then craving that kind of era of the crime genre. And like you said, this series, initially was very powerful in what it was doing. Telling a story about a british crime syndicate and the importance of that time and place. Then you have Cillian at the lead, you can’t help but find his and some other characters interesting. But I think it’s pretty obvious the storytelling dipped as it began to near the series’ end. Whether that’s due to Knight developing other projects alongside it, I don’t know. But for some reason my intrigue with it dwindled and it felt like it got derivative. Another thing that put me off after that was because it got brigaded by people who adored that performative powerful male image that it got imbued with through the social media activity and stuff. The film language at times, certainly poses that, the slow motion walking, guys smoking looking hard. But Knight did well to show why that image was fraudulent I think too.

It massively dropped in quality after Sam Neil left the show. The first 2 seasons were built around the cop and robber rivalry and the pseudo historical fantasy stuff was ridiculous and just didn't work.

What are you on about? the first 4 seasons are great. After that they started, whole we are gonna stop brit hitler plot and couldn't even tie that in 2 seasons

Idk man, I remember feeling like the show had lost steam by Series 3. The story becomes a lot less interesting once Tommy actually makes it the top. The goals feel more convoluted IMO and it's just never really clear where things are supposed to be going. The ultra-stylized visuals and sound cues start to feel kinda childish. Still a lot of fun moments in the later parts, but after Series 2 it doesn't really feel like a "prestige" show anymore—just a really well-made soap opera. Feels like Peaky Blinders started catering to the dumber half of the audience, so to speak.

I consider myself a pretty big fan of the show and have rewatched it many times. The thing is I think the plot to series 3 was a little too convoluted for most so series 4 was dumbed down a little. It seemed like Steven Knight wrote the story plotting it through series 1 and 2 and then once the show was relatively popular and they ordered a series 3 he wasn't sure where to go from there. The stakes kept increasing and the Shelby's become obscenely rich and Tommy becomes a politician with an OBE but he's still going gangster stuff and having shootouts. They went from street gang to living in a mansion too quickly.

I wouldn’t call it cash grab after the first couple seasons, season 4 was the best and setting up the fight against the rise of the Nazis was pretty interesting despite a meh season 5. Just wish the movie actually followed up on the hype ending of season 6

... another recast? I thought they might keep Barry on with such a limited order and the potential to double up on filming. I have been along for the whole ride and am pretty disinterested in this. We are now in a less interesting time period with less interesting characters.

I thought Keoghan was really good in the movie, but the movie itself was terrible. I loved the show but I’m fine with walking away from the franchise at this point.

I wonder if they only approached Barry Keoghan for the movie and the show wasn't part of his pitch. Bit odd to recast him otherwise.

Maybe a cost perspective too? Understandable to want to splash out on a big name for a movie but the cost of getting him to commit to a series might have been beyond their budget

Realy doubt cost is ever an issue for Steve Knight. He is beyond loaded from selling the Who Wants to be a Millionaire IP to 100+ countries. The guy even built his own movie/tv production studio (which I think is where they shoot all the Peaky stuff nowadays?). It is an odd decision but I guess there'll always be the hat and haircut for people to make the connection with the original show. The character in the movie and the movie itself aren't exactly that popular by themselves...

He’s probably busy with all the Beatles movies.

I literally had 0 idea who Duke was in the movie. I knew he was the son but I couldn’t remember what he looked like I’m just like okay whatever moving on, he was cool in Top Boy

I'm surprised they are even making more seasons to be honest.

They said there might be a time jump after the film so Keoghan being 33 and Bell being 40 I guess it kinda makes sense. Set in the 1950s. We all taking bets on how quickly they introduce the Kray twins?

Heaton wasn’t that great in Stranger Things imo, but I’m guessing it was more of a direction issue because he was fantastic in Industry. So he’ll probably be good in this considering it’s another British role (so he doesn’t have to worry about doing an American accent)

sotommy Apr 2, 2026 +30
He was fantastic in S01. He didn't even have the chance to be bad in later seasons

Upbeat_Tension_8077 Apr 2, 2026 +12
I think he took a backseat as certain characters (especially Steve) blew up in popularity & as the comedic side of the show increased. With that said, I thought he was hilarious in his first scene of Industry opposite Kiernan Shipka. I'd love to see even more of his range in Peaky Blinders, especially if his character is a hateable one

Singer211 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Yeah he got nothing of any substance to do after the last few seasons.

I feel like they just didn't know what to do with Jonathan after the first season or two. He was definitely good in the first season in particular, and then they ran into the whole, "Oh shit we have too many main characters and nothing for them to do" so we ended up with Jonathan the stoner on his California adventure.

GlamMetalLion Apr 2, 2026 +3
i feel shipping jonathan and nancy became pointless due to the actors dating in real life and the whole thing being streched out too long. Should had dated for a bit at the end of season 2 and then have them split up and move on.

wer-erldturninggggg Apr 2, 2026 +1
Honestly, I think they both should have been written out after season 2 or 3. Should have probably sent them both off to College. The only reason they stay in Hawkins after they graduate is, well, they’re on a tv show.

He's in Industry? Must be season 4 or did I just miss him somehow?

sitcomlover1717 Apr 2, 2026 +2
S4, he’s good! I wasn’t a fan of his in Stranger Things but he really won me over with his performance in Industry

That is a stacked cast. I'm interested.

1950s English crime drama. Who are they going to cast as the Kray twins?

VogonSoup Apr 2, 2026 +2
Ant and Dec.

Had to look that up. Probably too old for the time frame it's set in.

Nooooo, I want Barry Keoghan =/

Blacknite45 Apr 2, 2026 +4
Tight, Barry Keough was too  emotionalless and dull not to mention he still looks like a teenager

Readitzilla Apr 2, 2026
You mean the usual for him? Haw haw. Sorry. I’ll stop.

Blacknite45 Apr 2, 2026 +3
I don't get his appeal, his presence in films just seem too dull.

Not sure if this spin off will work, but I'll give it a chance. For starters, '50s seems to recent to me. I absolutely can't picture this period piece show working past 1959. Casting wise I have doubts as well. But ya, love the original, so will give it a go.

teretere2000 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Heaton must be Charlie Shelby !

fiercetankbattle Apr 3, 2026 +1
The film was very good but one of the strangest films I’ve seen in ages. This cast looks pretty stacked

DireWolfWNY Apr 2, 2026 +1
After that terrible movie that should have been scrapped, I have no faith in this series any longer.
