BocoteMar 29, 2026

I remember seeing those on YouTube where they'd pick up dead guys' phones and answer incoming calls, or call their mothers, to let them know that they killed the guy moments ago.
Absolutely cruel thing to do. What's even crazier is that I found the comments section full of people praising the act, calling it considerate to inform the family. They did tell the dead guy's mother that they'll return the body, but still, that's not a sane thing to do to some poor lady who just had her son killed, especially coming from the very people who shot the son dead.
926
mjohnsimonMar 29, 2026
+472
tbf, I think that last one was a different video from the one you mentioned earlier. In that case (and iirc), the Ukrainians were saying the Russians had basically told them they weren't going to recover the bodies since they were lying in Ukrainian-held territory, which made them "Ukraine’s problem", and those bodies had already been there for days/weeks.
So the calls were less about cruelty for cruelty’s sake, and more about trying to figure out who the dead were and where the bodies could be sent. (edit: I think in one of the calls, the mother mentioned that there were family members in Ukraine who could pick up the body, which adds an even extra layer of fucked-upness).
Still grim and fucked up as hell though, and it highlights the horror of modern warfare that I don't think many people ever expected.
Edit 2: yes, I understand that those could very well be faked/propaganda videos as well. As we've been finding out, modern warfare is full of mis/disinformation, but when it comes to Ukraine and their side, they tend to be a bit more honest/more likely to back up their claims with receipts unlike the Russians, who basically say "Trust me bro" whenever people ask for clarifications.

MrSpindlesMar 29, 2026

That's the thing. Iraq involved moving hundreds of thousands of troops, equipment and support structure into place over months of buildup and involved the co-operation of dozens of nations.
This has just been idiots thinking that a few days of air and missile barrage would see the regime collapse. Now there's no easy escalation, major hardware and troops aren't anywhere near being deployable in the region and what is there can't prosecute the campaign required.
As it is Iran has a long sea coast, an Eastern border which is both porous and connects to nations with a long history of moving weapons and fighting men through them and the US doesn't have control of the waters over which they would have to move troops. Iran has a northern border with supply lines between themselves and Russia, and it will take weeks to get a sufficient troop and equipment buildup sufficient to even try it, and to do so will first require the control of the waters.
The US has already lost this war, they just don't know it yet.

134

There probably isn’t really an easy analog for this conflict.
Vietnam was a post-colonial state with several factions vying for power. One of which that was pretty amenable to Western help and owned a fair bit of key terrain. The US Government had also done much better job of manufacturing the consent of its citizens. There was already strong anti-communist sentiment, with the Cold War on in full. Everyone had been sold the line that if we let one country in Asia fall to communism, the rest would follow. Then we’d have two giant communist states owning over half the globe and we’d be in real trouble.
None of this exists for Iran. The current US administration doesn’t even seem to know where to begin.
Beyond that, Iran learned a lot of lessons from the American occupation of Iraq. The IRGC was a key player, funneling weapons, money, and advisors into the country to fuel the insurgency to pretty great effect. They also appear to have decentralized their military, which would mean that even if the US didn’t completely botch the demobilization and demilitarization of the Iranian military (like it did in Iraq), assuming it wins the conventional campaign, the Irregular Warfare campaign would have already started. That is, Iran almost definitely has pretty robust contingency plan for invasion, specifically by the US.
The White House was hoping that some quick strikes would destabilize the Iranian government. Enough to ignite some form of grassroots coup in the country that would force whoever eventually grabbed the levers of power in the county to come to the bargaining table. This was a serious miscalculation and now the thought seems to be that inserting ground troops will somehow turn up the heat enough to trigger an agreement.
I don’t think this will work either. If the trend continues we will see a series of poorly thought out incremental escalations that lead to a very bloody and protracted war with no material gains for the US. Even if the US pulls out now, Iran is going to have a bone to pick and will probably bide its time looking for ways to asymmetrically hurt the US.

* 10x the military training of Iraqi soldiers and Taliban
* 3+ decades planning by Iran for _exactly this move_ by the U.S.
* With a dozen, splinter terrorist groups supporting Iran in the region and globally in various sleeper cells
This will not begin, nor end well for either side, primarily the U.S. casualties.

I think obama was a hope that we could return back to the optimism of the late nineties and that it was proof that George Bush and the Bible thumping brand of patriotism that came with a heavy dose a xenophobia was a fluke and on its last leg.
The absurdity of the tea party was actually once considered evidence that the republican party was dying.
But then 2016 painted the picture you just painted, that it was actually obama that was a fluke and that the Bible thumping, xenophobic, reactionary conservative politics was growing faster than ever.
But then trump lost after only 1 term to a geriatric Joe biden and people thought Trump was a fluke....
And then trump won again and now here we are.
The truth is, no one knows what is going to happen because a new media landscape and now new technology is completely changing politics and society in a way that is unrecognizable to me and many others.
The personalization of media has also made it very difficult to know what information other people are exposed to.
Edit: The florida debacle and Hilary Clinton winning the popular vote in 2016 support the idea that Trump and Bush were flukes but Bush beating out Kerry and Trump winning overwhelmingly in 2026 are evidence to support they aren't.

Similar age, I was in sixth grade when W won.
It was wild to have all of our political exposure essentially start with 9/11, then decades long wars.
And now there’s a generation that became aware of politics entirely in the age of Trump, and the ME war looks like it might replay in a dumber, wilder fashion

The US hasn't sustainably won a war or conflict since WW2. Almost every American alive today has watched the US lose (or abandon) every conflict it's been in, and yet it keeps doing it.
Even the conflicts people will claim the US succeeded in have almost exclusively resulted in failed states that hate the US and are ongoing humanitarian crises.

They insist on trying to halfway commit to war. That’s not how war works. You’re either all-in, or you’re losing. These troop numbers are an absolute joke for what they’re trying to do. But they don’t want to commit to a 300,000 man invasion force. Every one of these deaths will be an absolute waste. There will be no honor in being thrown to the sharks.

US military spending is half of world's military spending. And yet it cannot defeat a nation that had been 47 years under sanctions. To me it seems there is a very poor ratio of firepower per dollar. Industrial military complex creates fancy expensive weapons. In a way it is as if they built the Death Star and a band of rebels come with their c**** X-Wings to destroy it. Pure greed.

idk how the war is going to turn out, and anyone who tells you how it will play out might have no idea what they are talking about.
I was one of the people that thought Ukraine was going to be obliterated off the face of the earth, and I was pretty knowledgeable in IR matters and even studied it in college. I believed the hype train on the Russian military because who the hell would have thought otherwise? There was few actual analysts and military dudes who were even able to be smug at their accurate predictions of that fiasco.
Iran is not Iraq, nor is it Afghanistan, it has an entrenched military, and has had to deal with several wars. It is mountainous hellscape ( from a military point of view ) that makes Afghanistan look tame, we might be able to defeat the Iranian Military pretty easily but the occupation is going to be so rough if there is any resistance.
Afghanistan and Iraq were ruled by dictators who didn't care about their people, only cared about the extraction of resources and living lavish lifestyles. Iran is not like that, Persia is not some backwater with despots, the Iranian people genuinely believe in their country and have a semblance of nationalism. The Iranian military won't just lay down their arms and say 'I surrender' en mass like the Iraqi military.
They have the ability entrench and it will be horrible, this isn't like Russia invading Ukraine that had long stretches of flat terrain, the Iranian military will be able to put up defenses to fight off attacks that will be costly in manpower and equipment.
Gods, I hope it doesn't happen.
