Yet we gut child cancer research and PBS.
752
blazelet Mar 25, 2026 +279
They also cut Head Start, TANF, school meals, summer nutrition programs, CHIP funding, Medicaid funding, Healthy Start programs, SNAP … all programs that benefit the most vulnerable children in America. Not to mention the effective gutting of USAID which it is already projected has caused the deaths of 300,000 people globally, mostly children, by cutting access to nutrition and HIV/AIDS medications in some of the worlds most vulnerable populations. This administrations priorities are crystal clear. I’d say they seem to want to screw children in favour of billionaires … in light of the Epstein disclosures, we actually know that’s true.

F****** children anyway they can

Right I work in biotech and my customers grants have been cut gutted or delayed. The NIH is a shell of what it was 2 years ago. But let’s bomb brown people in shacks half across the world for freedom or something I guess.

When Romney was running for president there was a massive PR campaign against him for wanting to cut PBS and he even ended up saying "I don't want to cut Big Bird". Why didn't we see such a simple campaign used again? It resonated. My guess is that there Democrats are complicit in the cuts because they are owned by similar money interests.
10
Jabberwocky2022 Mar 25, 2026 +18
Democrats are owned by some of the same money interests. But they've also been wildly incompetent in the Trump era. They act like it's business as usual, have done a terrible job investing in campaigning and PR, and still lean into seniority instead of listening to the voters that would win them elections. I blame their incompetence and electoral malfeasance more than anything else. It's worse than just being bought by interests, it's being incompetent to the benefit of moneyed interests.
18
nameduser365 Mar 25, 2026 +7
I do wonder how much of the incompetency is on purpose and how much is them actually being incompetent. There's some saying about stupidity being a more likely explanation for many things than malfeasance, but I think there's definitely a blend at work here

1

PBS didn't get much of their budget from the feds, about 15% I doubt they are going anywhere, and a new administration will surely restart VOA, PBS, and NPR federal funding. Hopefully, they pull through til 2029.

> WASHINGTON, March 25 (Reuters) - The Pentagon said on Wednesday it had reached ‌framework agreements with BAE (BAES.L), Lockheed (LMT.N) and Honeywell(HON.O) to boost production of defense systems and munitions as part of its shift to "wartime footing." Under the deals, Honeywell Aerospace will "surge production of critical components for America's munitions stockpile," as part of a $500 million multi-year investment, the Pentagon said. Yeah sounding like we are going to have another forever war…
286
IAHawkeye182 Mar 25, 2026 +114
$500m is nothing when it comes to this stuff..
114
Secret_Cow_5053 Mar 25, 2026 +38
Depends on what there buying but if we’re talking about patriots and tomahawks, then yeah. Thats like…two dozen.
38
embiidDAgoat Mar 25, 2026 +16
Right, but for smaller stuff like drones and a smaller business it’s a good amount. Lots of smaller defense businesses specializing in drones and anti drone warfare right now which should’ve been established before going into a war with countries whose main tactic is to launch garbage cans with wings and bombs on them….which was obviously known from the Ukraine war, but this administration doesn’t seem much for planning or doing anything right.
16
skobuffaloes Mar 25, 2026 +7
Article says this is for Lockheed BAE and Honeywell. So I expect a smaller tranche for smaller businesses/ smaller systems. This seems like it’s the $500k to $5mn munitions and systems.
7
ohlookahipster Mar 25, 2026 +5

3
patsfan038 Mar 25, 2026 +5
Healthcare, education, infrastructure, there are so many other departments that could benefit from having literally unlimited budget, which would impact an average Joe's life a million times more than what's being spent on defense. And yet, we keep flushing billions down the drain
5
Sic_Semper_Dumbasses Mar 25, 2026 +2
Yeah, basically one jet and it's ordinance. And not even the top of the line jet at that.
2
HP844182 Mar 25, 2026 +1
It's to build/expand facilities to enable more production capacity, not for buying weapons directly
1
NeverEndingCoralMaze Mar 25, 2026 +1

0
NeverEndingCoralMaze Mar 25, 2026 +1
I wasn’t disagreeing with you. Just adding how I see it.
1
skobuffaloes Mar 25, 2026 +1
Ehhh… it depends if it’s just ramping up production and buying existing equipment and systems then it’s something. But if this is new development(which I highly doubt) then it’s nothing. Let’s say the average system rounds out at $5mn then you get 100 of these!! No doubt there will be plenty of $500k weapons and a few $10-15mn systems. I think this would be something that can support the joint services with the current war for about 6months to a year. The devil is in the details but $500mn spent well can go a long ways. I’m hoping(not really but if we want to protect or service members) there is a smaller amount but similar scale for small counter UAS systems so each base and and battalion can have a few at a time and be replenished for the same amount of time.
1
Small_Run_3583 Mar 25, 2026 +10
Let's also not forget Don Jr and Eric investing in drone company Powerus. Doesn't give Daddy Trump much incentive to end this war if he can make money off of it.
10
Evil_Mini_Cake Mar 25, 2026 +2
So in 2-3 years they'll have enough air defence stockpiles for internal use plus allies (if there are any left) so they can keep shooting $2M rockets at $10k drones while shirking anti-drone technology from Ukraine. Please proceed.
2
TommyyyGunsss Mar 25, 2026 +2
Isn’t it interesting that they changed it from dept of defense to dept of war but they still call them defense systems and munitions and not war systems and munitions?
2
ohlookahipster Mar 25, 2026 +4
Thankfully, it’s still the DoD because Congress didn’t approve the name change. There were orders sent out allowing officers and NCOs to use either *DoD* or *DoW* in official correspondences, but colloquially it’s still DoD.

1
B6TM6N Mar 25, 2026 +1
A framework agreement is just that till the actual cash money to ramp up production capacity is provided. These companies aren't going to expand factories and hire extra staff only to see the orders drop off at the end of a conflict
1
gamesbonds Mar 25, 2026 +140
$850 million in grants, tax breaks, and infrastructure incentives for the Anduril drone factory in Ohio being built. JobsOhio leases the state's liquor monopoly and uses that revenue to fund these grants. No idea how a private non profit that makes money through a tax on liquor sales, is able to pump out millions for billionaire pet projects with zero oversight or transparency reporting.

We had doge cut medical research for military funding. What the actual f*** is wrong with this country?? It’s mentally broken.
58
Cormag778 Mar 25, 2026 +10
It makes perfect sense when you realize this administration doesn’t actually have a cogent goal. You have a bunch of people who all know that they can get Trump to agree with their pet project by flattering him and being the last in the room, which is how you get Elon cutting spending everywhere (to save his companies and so he can feel important), that hurts Hegseth’s desire to be a scary shotcaller General, who’s war is going to increase economic harm, etc.

What is wrong is that we are so sexist and racist that we couldnt get ourselves to vote for a woman president twice. All the rest is excuses trying to hide that fact.
10
Crazy-Comment7579 Mar 25, 2026 -3
>we couldnt get ourselves to vote for a woman president twice Are you referring to Hillary Clinton? Because she voted for the Iraq war and supported intervention in Libya and Syria.
-3
S417M0NG3R Mar 25, 2026 +7
So obviously she would have unilaterally jumped straight into a war with Iran with no plan despite all of the very good reasons not to do so. After gutting the military leadership of everyone who dared tell her it wasn't a good idea. I'm sick of people acting like war hawks on the left would have done anything as asinine as this war. It's simply lies and deliberate manipulation.

Don't worry, people keep correcting us that we should keep calling it "Department of Defense", because we're definitely not a nation preparing for a lot of protracted wars on a lot of different fronts. The government totally renamed it by accident and this administration has NEVER said something outrageous then almost immediately done it.
13
Not_Campo2 Mar 25, 2026 +4
No, we’re correcting it because a congressional vote is necessary to rename it
4
Slypenslyde Mar 25, 2026 +3
Congress does not seem to agree, and to me that's a bigger concern since they're also supposed to have some controls about when and why we go to war.
3
Ok-disaster2022 Mar 25, 2026 +10
If they try to put boots on the ground in Iran that's going to be thousands of dead and captured Americans. I'm not saying American service members are incompetent I'm saying it's a black hawk down situation where simply overwhelming numbers will still win. Iran and Iraq fought using human wave tactics back in the 80s. Iran has numbers on its side, especially as a defender in their home territory.
10
ohlookahipster Mar 25, 2026 +7
Iran is also 2.5x the size of Texas with the altitude and terrain of Colorado. It’s f****** cold. It’s f****** hot. You’re at 4,000ft with mountains towering above you. Their air power is crippled, but you would still need to secure more than two Texases plus a coast line that’s as long as the southern tip of Florida to Delaware. You can already get lost and hide in one Texas. Now imagine how many fighters you could hide in TWO Texases. Also from what we know, there’s no major schisms or fractioning of Iran’s army or leadership. It’s not like Syria where the country Balkanized into multiple factions. Whatever is left waiting is still loyal and not going to turn on itself.

So the original plan and reason for the war. We all know the industrial complex needs this right? And the weapons experts are telling their military counterparts for years, how good these products will be.
12
agent674253 Mar 25, 2026 +5
The war was always the plan, that is why there is the 'build manufacturing back to the US' because once we are at war with China, where will we get anything? Trading alliances help prevent wars because you need each other, but with China's 'Made in China 2025' program, they no longer need us, and we seem to apparently hate them, so war it is.
5
One-Internal4240 Mar 26, 2026 +1
Well, they certainly don't want to take the chance of putting their so-very-refined weapons technology against a peer, and especially not against China. Even barring the nuclear weapons aspect of that, if we went balls out to "Free Taiwan" it's a fight I am increasingly sure we would lose. We might lose that fight very badly, maybe even humiliatingly badly, as in "we don't know what happened to that ship, but the PLAN is picking up all our sailors bobbing in the water". Ah we keep coming back around to nuclear weapons. Increasingly, the non-nuclear nations of the earth look more and more like the colonialized of the 19th century, held under the power of steam, iron, and guns. Today there are no longer the Enlightenment notions to soften the imbalance of power, and old Rousseauism / Old Right stirrings of "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" echo through the West. Along with a wholly new and totally undisguised delight in cruelty for its own sake. Not even justifying it with "anti-partisan actions" or "purifying the blood of the nation" or any of the other old time-honored excuses. People like Hegseth and his ilk find brutality amusing, and they think you should too. One wonders if they would chuck a nuke at the unsuspecting _for the lulz_, and one is not comforted.

We were/are already low on certain munitions. For instance, a lot of the older munitions that would normally be used for training was sent to Ukraine (possibly Israel too, but not sure.) While front line units were fine, spot shortages were cropping up in training units. These were also a hedge in the event of a large war. Those stocks need to be refreshed asap.
