Smoothies are the biggest trap they feel healthy but can easily hit 500–800 calories without realizing.

That's good to know! Sounds like I need to drink more

So real. I started making smoothies with a bit of frozen fruit, lots of spinach, and some water. I tell myself they’re like the roadside local smoothies that you get in a tropical country

Fact people already drink smoothy daily is alarming to me.

Foods like olive oil, nuts, and peanut butter are nutrient-dense but calorie-bombs.

Exactly healthy, but super easy to overdo. That’s where most people slip.

Wasn't so much as the calories itself. It was how much shit has sugar in it. And how much sugar is in fact in a lot of shit. like... holy f***. Plus I learned that the bigger the ingredient list, the less healthy it is. So I've really been cracking down on zero sugar and foods that have the smallest list possible.

That’s the shock “healthy” foods loaded with sugar you’d never expect.

Yeah, makes life as a type 1 diabetic in the US a shitshow. Add to it that anything that is good for me, is something I have to race all the keto fitness junkies to. Thank God I know how to cook real food though.

Yeah no. It's insane. Or how shit like those protein bars or health bars are like... 500 calories and full of c*** ingredients.

For me it’s salt. Everything has way to much salt and sugar and not enough fiber

That cutting down on calories so much for an entire lifetime would mess my metabolism forever and create worse weight gain issues. Also to discover I was actually suffering from malnutrition. I never realized how little calories I was eating. My endo kept telling me I must eat more than I say because I'm not losing the weight, I counted, it was horrifyingly low. That and you can under-eat and gain weight. It doesn't happen for most people, it's relatively rare, and plenty of doctor don't even acknowledge it, but it's pretty much you body becoming a doomsday prepper and every time you cut, it thinks the famine and apocalypse is here, and ration everything cutting down on energy and abilities to be able to store more if need be.

Yeah under-eating can wreck energy and slow things down, but actual fat gain still needs a surplus. Most of the time it’s adaptation + hidden calories.

I reached a point I could barely stay awake at all (though I have other contributing factors for developing Chronic Fatigue Syndrom, but this contributed a lot). Enough so that I could just be too tired to even eat at all, and sleep over 24hrs. Only medication helped me. I lost 60 lbs. with the contraceptive alone without any change in diet and exercise. That being said, my health is wrecked. I am not representative of a healthy person, and I left things unchecked for too long. Also, learning dieting from a woman obsessed with things never being healthy and homemade enough made me developed a bad relationship with food to begin with. Discovered lately this is a food disorder that may be added to the DSM6. Learning that helped me start my journey of having a more peaceful and laidback attitude with food.

Looking back this seems obviously stupid, but when I was in my early twenties I thought I was the epitome of healthy eating making scallops in like a half cup of olive oil and garlic. I was GOBSMACKED when I went to track the calories in MyFitnessPal lmao should have just feasted at McDonald’s instead 😂

Half a cup of olive oil will do that 😅 easy 500–600+ calories right there. That’s where “healthy” cooking sneaks up on people.

Not a healthy eater but calorie curious. Asian here so just the “normal” amount of rice that I eat with every meal.

That even unhealthy food won't make you gain weight, it's the overconsumption of calories. And some healthy food has lots of calories in them.

100%. You can gain weight eating clean or lose weight eating junk it’s the total that matters.

Olive oil. I was drowning everything in it without noticing.

Avocados. Thought they were good replacement for salad dressing. I’m not going to save 1/2 an avocado to turn brown, but 300 calories!?!?

I don’t fall into this trap, but I’ve seen it. Salad dressing.

Scones and muffins

Peanut butter. It’s not worth making a pb&j anymore if you try calorie counting.

That I barely reached half my supposed daily requirements much of the time. I figured I'd be fine with my 2-3 meals a day but with my low appetite I almost feel like I'm going to have to rely on high-calorie snacks to survive at this point lol
