Pet Semetery review (2018 remake)

Posted by MaeMae061212

I’ve decided to completely re-write my review because, looking back, I was very harsh. I’d like to start off with the fact I’ve never seen the original movie in the first place, so I’ll be comparing this to the book. Pet Semetery is one of my favorite books ever, and when my brother told me we’d be watching it, I didn’t think it would be the new remake of the original movie. (Which, is the original worth watching?) I’ve never EVER watched a movie and it been so incredibly inconsistent to the book. The lack of relationship between Jud and Louis, who are supposed to be like father-and-son, and (spoiler) the fact that Ellie does rather than Gage. I wasn’t even a huge fan of the acting in general. I can keep going on and on about how deeply this irked me to watch—quite frankly, I hated it. A solid 3/10, and that’s a bit generous. I think if the idea were applied to a different movie entirely—the killing off people and bringing them back to life—it could actually be interesting! However this really wasn’t at all. It was literally just a rip-off Pet Semetery. I’d like to hear your opinions on this.

I think the hard changes made to play with the expectations of people who saw the first movie are really interesting. The truck hit and the achilles tendon. Otherwise yeah it's not great. Which isn't to say to they work, necessarily. They're both very much, "hohoho, you expected this but instead you get this." If you felt trolled, you're not wrong. But the sequences are very well executed tension and then there's just enough space after what should have happened. You're reevaluating your expectations and BAM it happens anyway. It's been a minute since I seen this version and I haven't read the book. The different kid dying led to minor plot issues. The baby couldn't talk about "Paxcow" or however its spelled. But they worked around it in what seemed to me an acceptable way. Was there more that was screwed up by that choice? Overall unnecessary. I kind of like the ending but I'm a sucker for supernatural evil winning. It's good to murder babies in horror movies. That's horrible which was the point all along. And strictly speaking, you're here arguing that you wanted that baby to be hit by a truck.

I agree with you, especially on the last bit. To argue that though, I wanted the baby to get h it by a truck, not murdered by his family—if this plot was in a different movie, and not a shitty remake of Pet Semetery, it WOULD be good.

It's just Pet Semetery on a different level of the tower.

The one thing that this version of the story did well was give Rachel a bit more agency, and let her actually react to her child coming back to life. Her disgust at the idea, and her line “you dig her up” is really good.  It might be my only complaint about an otherwise perfect book that Rachel starts the book as such a strong character with her own back story and her own plot points, and then she races home just to be killed “off screen” and never gets to confront her husband or really react to what’s going on.  Otherwise, the 2018 movie botched pretty much every other aspect of the story. Especially the ending. For all the silly jokes people make about Stephen King being bad at endings, the end of Pet Semetary is perfect. If they had at least kept and nailed the original ending, it would have made the whole thing worthwhile. I have no idea why anyone would think the new ending was better than the book and original movie.

This is a clickbait post right? OP you do know there is a better version of the story, right? The original Pet Sematary movie from the 80s.

No shit, I’m giving a review on a different movie, not the original.

yeah, that remake was a total flop. they really missed the mark on the core themes of the book, which is such a bummer for fans like us.

Absolutely! I was so disappointed.

I thought the bait and switch with the kids was fun, and a neat way to provide a surprise in a story that’s been done to death. It’s also a lot easier to make a teenage girl scary on film than a toddler. I can’t take the ending of the 1989 movie seriously, even if it does work on the page.

Yeah I just read the synopsis and it seems to be pretty faithful outside of the Ellie bit

Overall I thought the movie was pretty bad, but my biggest grievance is the relationship between Louis and Jud. The very first sentence of the book establishes Jud as a father figure to Louis, and the theme runs throughout. In this movie it's portrayed like Louis doesn't even *like* Jud.  And yeah, the bait and switch with the kids was pointless.

I think the bait and switch was them trying to offer a new spin. It failed.

How could it be a twist when they spoil it in the trailer?

I put *Pet Semetary '18* and *Mortal Kombat '21* in the same boat, as they were films that had potential to be vastly superior to their previous adaptations...and they do everything in their power to not be any better (aside from technical improvements like budget and effects).

It's not like the 80's one was a cinematic masterpiece.

Sure, and I’ll be honest—my brother told me we’d be watching Pet Semetery and didn’t actually even mean to buy the remake. I was GOING to watch that but never got the chance to, which is why rather than comparing it to the original, I compared it to the books. Is the original worth watching?

The original is almost always worth watching over remakes.

I can't take that first sentence seriously so the review died for me there. Good bye.

To clarify, I’m not talking about the original one if you think I’m taking about that. Goodbye.

The 80's movie isn't a masterpiece but it's not terrible either. It's also fairly faithful to the book.
