So, nothing like "God, give us the humility and wisdom to do what is right." It's all "God, help us smash our enemies to smithereens." There's nothing like these good, godly men with their Crusaders' faith doing God's work.

He’s a drunken TV show host. He doesn’t know how to do the actual job so he sticks with what he knows, playing like he’s a tough guy on TV. He’s totally overmatched and is flailing.

I'm willing to bet big that the literal crusades were composed of bastards just like him
29
Economy-Pin2836 Mar 27, 2026 +21
They were. Just read contemporary accounts of the Crusaders, they were monsters who raped and killed their way toward Jerusalem (and then slaughtered everyone once they got there, including Jews and Christians). Even in friendly territory such as the Byzantine Empire, they sacked towns and committed countless atrocities, using Deus Vult as an excuse to do so. Hegseth would fit right in with those people, he is what the Classical Romans called a "Wolf's Head" (a bloodthirsty genocidal monster).

There have been a lot of recent reports of strange religious rituals coming out of DOD and something about a prophecy that the 47th president would save Israel and save the world from anti-christ. I mean - really weird, unfounded sh!t.

I don’t know what’s their obsession with the crusades. Why do they obsess over a series of conflict that the Christians ultimately lost against Muslims. And one of them was a very specific controversial crusade that went against other Christians (4th crusade)
6
rascallyrascal1511 Mar 27, 2026 +6
I would guess it's some combination of liking the general idea of the Crusades without educating themselves about the actual details.

Jesus is strictly a prop. They fake to appeal to supposed Christians who are hateful bigots.
16
CryptographerCrazy61 Mar 27, 2026 +13
No. The prop is the old testament god, Jesus taught compassion, love etc everything they say is “woke”. Some pastors will no longer preach the sermon on the mount because the evangelical zealots complain about it.
13
AlcibiadesTheCat Mar 27, 2026 +5
Don't even get started with the Sermon on the Plain from Luke, where Josh Christ eschews the spiritual side. It's not "blessed are the poor in spirit," it's "blessed are the poor."
5
CryptographerCrazy61 Mar 27, 2026 +3
lol there was a time when I would have cared what you call him. Anyways , yes whatever meaning you want to give it, some pastors have gotten complaints about preaching it.
3
AlcibiadesTheCat Mar 27, 2026 +3
I mean, Jesus is the romanization of Yeshua, and Yeshua in every other language transliterated to Joshua/Jose/Josue/etc; it only tracks that this absolute bro of a human wouldn't stand on pretense, and would likely have gone by Josh, or perhaps El Duderino, if you're not into that whole brevity thing.
3
CryptographerCrazy61 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Yes he wouldn’t have cared zfg and no i don’t believe he is the son of the biblical god
1
ChickenMcFukket1 Mar 27, 2026 +3
No no no, this is white Republican Jesus.
3
ragingreaver Mar 27, 2026 +1
So...the *literal* antichrist that preaches hate, violence, mercilessness, scorn for the foreigner, abuse for children, poverty is a sin, greed is a virtue, and justice needs to be denied at every opportunity.
1
lancelongstiff Mar 28, 2026 +2
The Old Testament God had a difficult job trying to teach people things like *"murder is wrong and there will terrible consequences if you do it*". He was basically the early-civilisation equivalent of "*just you wait until your father gets home*". So try to be a little more understanding, ok?
2
StoneWall_MWO Mar 27, 2026 +7
They are admitting he was brown?
7
Jeoshua Mar 27, 2026 +13
Republican Jesus isn't the same thing as the Quasi-Historical Literary Jesus. Unironically, Jesus (R) is basically the Demiurge from Gnostic tradition. An oppressive force that took over and imprisons us all while pretending to be the Creator.
13
CryptographerCrazy61 Mar 27, 2026 -10
Whatever AI you used gave you the opposite of what he is meant to be.
-10
Jeoshua Mar 27, 2026 +11
Is everything you don't understand the meaning of "AI" to you? I'm curious. What AI do you think I even used? Why? Did I use too many em-dashes? Bullet-point lists? What? AI has hurt us in more ways than just people asking AI to think for them. It's also made everyone super suspicious that everything they don't like is fake, somehow. F*** sake. So anyway, to clarify: I'm pointing out how "Republican Jesus" is the opposite of what he is presented as, in the Bible. That's just a (sad, sad) fact of how they are using him as a figurehead. Not some force of Love and Light, but an oppressive, violent figure justifying their desire for conquest.
11
BanginNLeavin Mar 27, 2026 -2
In reality Jesus was just a crazy dude who liked bro time a lot. His supposed rise to notoriety and subsequent killing has been used for literally 2000 years to oppress and control populations.
-2
Jeoshua Mar 27, 2026 +6
I mean, while that might be the case, it also might be the case that there was no actual "Jesus" in reality, and the stories in the New Testament (objectively written decades after his supposed life by people who mostly could never actually claim to have met the real man) are just the culmination of centuries of prophecy and religious thought. There may be figures and older stories that the figure in the Bible is based around, tho, and the "truths" spoken in that document are nevertheless worth considering, as they can shape people's outlook on life. My point is that there are, at least, two figures that we might call "Jesus". One is described in The Bible (and the Quran for that matter) as a man of peace. The other is a figure pointed to by the Crusaders and people like Hegseth, and is a vehicle of violent oppression. In my personal opinion, neither is actually a "real" figure, but the people who follow them are real enough. One of them has teachings that are a fairly good basis for living your life, and the other leads to oppression, wars, and destruction.

What about this is AI to you?
1
CryptographerCrazy61 Mar 27, 2026 +3
It makes sense now after the edit , when I read it this morning it was written to sound like the opposite of what it reads now or there was a bit too much nuance for me. I work with AI every day and at times the way it structures responses exactly how it was written before the person gave it a second pass

Netanyahu actually said recently the Genghis Khan's ideology should be followed over Christ's, because you know, it worked out so well for him in the long run when all his kids fought and destroyed what he built. It's why the Mongol Empire still exists and Christianity doesn't (wait, that's wrong ...).

I mean, who can forget the verse, Jesus dying on the cross, crying out to God the Father about the Romans that "they deserve no mercy" and that God should "break the teeth of the ungodly." I mean, Hegseth is just slightly paraphrasing Luke 23:34, and if you don't think that's true, you haven't read your Trump "God Bless the USA" Bible, available for $99, complete with a hand written chorus of God Bless the USA by no other than Lee Greenwood himself. /s

>"Give them wisdom in every decision, endurance for the trial ahead, unbreakable unity, and overwhelming violence of action against those who deserve no mercy," Hegseth said. He also called on God to "break the teeth of the ungodly." I wonder if it has occured to him that he is the one that "deserves no mercy" and that he is the "ungodly."

Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (Luke 6:36) Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you. (Luke 6:27) Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. (Matthew 5:7) I desire mercy, not sacrifice. (Matthew 9:13) Overwhelming violence of action against those who deserve no mercy. (McGospel of Pete 3:26)

Toy_Guy_in_MO Mar 27, 2026 +6
Oh, they've given up on that Jesus. I've seen multiple people doing the "well actually..." and trying to justify Hegseth by selectively quoting the old and new testaments. They'll talk about how David prayed for god to bring down his enemies or how Revelations talks about Jesus coming back to put the beatdown to Satan. They worship Swole Jesus now.
6
rascallyrascal1511 Mar 27, 2026 +3
I get the feeling Pete is more of an Old Testament guy . . . as long as it doesn't apply to him personally.

Pete Hegseth is a cartoon character. Or perhaps more like teh insane general in Dr. Strangelove.
7
Theferael_me Mar 27, 2026 +7
Hegseth is no more a Christian than I am, and I'm an atheist. He's a member of Douglas Wilson's demented sect which has been roundly criticised by many, many Christians for the way it ignores the Jesus of the Gospels and prioritises the Old Testament and Revelations.
7
AccomplishedEarl Mar 27, 2026 +7
Overwhelming violence." Imagine the reaction if a different official from a different religion used that phrase in a government building. The double standard is doing backflips right now. We’ve gone from "Soft Power" to "Pray for the End Times" in record speed.
7
TransiTorri Mar 27, 2026 +7
If Democrats manage to retake power at some point, Hegseth should be sent to the Hague to stand trial. That'll make sure he faces proper justice and also allows the United States to claim they aren't "playing politics" or attacking someone on political party affiliation. But what Hegseth has both said, done, and continues to say, are blatant war crimes.

1
crom-dubh Mar 27, 2026 +3
To be fair to Kegseth (more than he probably deserves), the full phrase he used is "overwhelming violence of action." Violence of action is a military concept which basically means like sudden application of force. That being said, it's still really fucked up that this is part of a prayer, and the part about "breaking teeth" is definitely disturbing.

I was a drummer at a major Pentecostal church for 3 years. They were like a cult. We had to sign documents and shit saying we wouldn’t listen to secular music, swear or masterbate. The list was long of what we couldn’t do. The Youth pastor found my Good Charlotte CD and kicked me out. He was caught two years later with an underage boy.

This is the danger of what we did in Venezuela with Operation Absolute Resolve. Maduro's seizure violates the long-standing rule of *immunity ratione personae* for heads of state. We created or laid the foundation for justification of a \_new\_ doctrine where domestic indictment justifies military capture of a foreign head of state on their own soil. The overwhelming lack of humility of our admin leaves them thinking that the decision paternalistically can only applied by them (which is the same reason we do need to prosecute and litigate the Epstien files - same thing, different circumstances). We reap what we sow.

To everyone here saying oh man the bible says Jesus wanted peace - just stop. Hegseth is an Apostolic Reformationist - a branch that heavily focuses on the revelations side of the bible which believes starting a war with evil (Iran) will bring about Revelations and the second coming of Christ. You are not talking to a sane person, this is a doomsday cult.

The entirety of existing human civilization is built upon the Age of Discovery—a feat that was only pushed to its conclusion because Catholicism and Christianity leveraged their internal faith to forge unity. The synthesis of justice and divine mandate bolsters a soldier's endurance in extreme combat environments. When piloting a sortie through the defensive fire of Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, Hamas, and the Taliban, the 'Call of the Lord' is far more effective at stabilizing one’s performance than trying to recall the entirety of the U.S. Constitution in the heat of the moment; it is simply more concise and potent

Why do writers quote people when they know the person doesn’t believe what they themselves are saying? It’s obvious that these people only agree because they think it appeases. This makes their sentiment meaningless. Printing it as a genuine quote gives it false credibility. It’s more than just being complicit with the lie, it’s what gives it life. Do reports just no longer care about witness credibility?

Talarico is the only individual that even comes close to having a willingness to bring up the topic of Christian Nationalism & I sure hope he’s got the ability to recruit others, because all of the prominent religious figures in this country are either Christian Nationalists themselves or unwilling to speak up on the topic. There’s a darkness that is setting in around God & Christianity where there should be light for people. I always thought that if this started to happen, reasonable people would dig their heels in, but now I am afraid that they’ll assassinate Talarico because he’s in the way, blame Gavin Newsom for it, and/or just come right out and say that it is payback for Charlie Kirk.
