If the Philippine officials are to be trusted then American communists dying fighting in the Philippines was definitely not a headline I expected to see in 2026.

They were Filipino-Americans associated with Anakbayan, a youth political group that has ties to the New People's Army (Communist Bandits)

Anakbayan have active chapters in American universities that caters to Filipino-American youths

This reads like a MAGA thing to scare the world about "indoctrination" at universities.

I know it sounds like that but as a Fil-Am, I’m usually surprised when I see Anakbayan flags in US protests. Throws me off a lot really because I thought they’re simply localized in the Philippines. Really exercising the international part of international revolution. https://www.anakbayanusa.com

That's really interesting. Can you help me understand the name they use? I know anak because that's what my wife uses with our son and what her mom refers to her children with, but a search says that bayan means something close to motherland.  When used in this context, is the intent to show an almost maternal connection to an idealized motherland? Is the intent to draw in a larger, global community or is it a local group saying "we are the true children of the nation"?

It really means "Children of the Nation/People". Its a revolutionary term in the Philippines stemming from the Katipunan (Kataastaasan Kagalanggalang Katipunan ng mga **Anak ng Bayan**/Supreme and Venerable Association of the Children of the Nation). Its a leftist youth organization so its in their wheelhouse to use language that appeals to organizing the masses. Theyre more focused in bringing "democracy" in line of Marxist-Leninist-Maoist ideology with a Filipino flair

Ah gotcha. So it's alluding to an earlier revolutionary movement from the 19th century. Is that an attempt to prove legitimacy or does that naming convention just ring as associated to a Tagalog speaker? Kind of like Liberty being heavily associated with our own revolution in the US when it's used in certain ways.

All revolutionary movement in the Philippines likes to claim a link to the Philippine Revolution, conservative and liberal. For example, Magdalo Group attempted a coup in mid 2000s. The original Magdalo were part of the Katipunan but the modern Magdalo are a conservative anti-communist group. Leftist groups just has anti-imperialism in their ideology and specifically anti-Americanism (due to the US colonizing and subsequently suppressing leftist movements in the 20s-60s on top of continued American presence in the Philippines to this day).

Well, last year we learned an American communist who happened to be a son of some big time CIA manager died fighting against Ukraine, so it's just a trend.

I guess you don't know about lemmygrad yet. It's like the conservative sublistnook, except for tankies - e.g. an 80/20 mix of Russian Glavset influence bots and useful idiot incels feeding off each other in a veritable vortex of moronity, whataboutism and bad faith "arguments". Not recommended. 0/10.

If you ever manage to figure it out, you'll first achieve enlightenment and then - almost immediately - immense disappointment. If you wish to retain even a shred of faith in humanity, I strongly suggest leaving it be. Even in the best case, only justifiable anger and profound frustration awaits those who dare enter this rabbit hole. In the very worst case... You'll gradually start to think the idiots might have a point. It's like watching TikTok 24/7 or asking the nearest LLM what your opinions are supposed to be - even if you start out sane, the brain rot will eventually seep in by osmosis. Like RFK Jr. rolling in the nearest roadkill, you will eventually end up sick. But to give you an idea: First, try to imagine the very worst Tumblr blog from back in the day. The kind authored by a person who've managed to so thoroughly confuse themselves that they're mainly preoccupied with trying to figure out which of ten arbitrary subdivisions of pan-sexual they are and scouring the nearest thesaurus for new and exiting pronouns to use. Now imagine an entire community of like-minded people, except instead of harmlessly attempting to settle on their favorite flavor of DnD Dragon for their fursona, they're instead arguing about why one of the genocides they've decided they like was *totally* justified. Trust me, whether they're Neo-Nazis, Tankies, MAGA, religious fruitcakes or conspiracy nuts, it's best to leave them all in their echo-chambers to wallow in the madness they spew. Especially when most of said madness is deliberately seeded by [Агентство интернет-исследований](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Research_Agency).

The meaning of every single term I used is only a trivial search away, so if you're truly interested in understanding what I said, figuring it out shouldn't take you more than five minutes of your time.

Just a nothingburger story really. Phillipines has a lot of citizens who immigrant to the US. US allows birthright citizenship, Phillipines allows citizenship by birth. So there is naturally a lot of duel citizens
23
alexwasashrimp 1 day ago +11
Do you have to fight other applicants to death to become a duel citizen?
11
JerbTrooneet 1 day ago +1
It technically is a nothingburger but it's being used as political ammunition towards state universities and what the government is doing to try and bring down their legitimacy. Which yeah is basically one big whataboutism ploy meant to flood the news feeds since there's currently a massive anti-corruption campaign that's ensaring so many high ranking government officials including the current VP who has some not subtle at all presidential ambitions.

The communist insurgency in the Philippines under the New People's Army (NPA) is more Maoist in its ideology and structure ("revolution must begin from the peasantry"). However, [even China now sees the NPA as obsolete](https://globalnation.inquirer.net/21671/chinese-communist-party-says-it-has-disowned-local-rebels). Meanwhile, the United States labeled the NPA as a terrorist group in the early 2000s.

Impossibu 1 day ago +4
It's honestly kind of sad that China supports the right-wing Duterte faction as it is more impactful than the NPA, who shares their ideology.

ZapLordTrack 1 day ago +5
China hasn't really been maoist since the 60's and 70's cultural revolution. After a bunch of economic reforms (example Deng xiaoping) China has adapted and is now able to rival the US dollar. If Mao rose from the dead right now he'd start rolling in his grave. Not once but twice. Also current CCP structure is more of a Leninist/Marx state party structure. That doesn't mean that China denounces Maoism but rather they still revere Mao and his ideology as a sort of nostalgia.

Nothing could be more ironic than Americans trying to spread communism outside of America. If you like it so much do it in your own country.

Ok there propaganda eater. There is no path to communism in the US and the people that I have known that support it are educated and above average income.

VoopityScoop 1 day ago +3
I'm a little bit educated (2 years in college for economics, then switched to history for 3 years). Communism is a mess of an ideology and whether it succeeds or ends up killing tens of millions of people is essentially up to luck. Socialism can work, communism can not.

The more you know about these terrorists the less you think they have any ideals. It's sadly just a trap for mentally ill kids to make some local oligarch money. And if you're wondering why they don't just get rid of them, that's another oligarch.
