Philippine vessels get safe passage from Iran in Strait of Hormuz
Iran has assured the Philippines that Philippine-flagged vessels, energy sources, and all Filipino seafarers would be allowed safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been affected by the Middle East conflict, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.

They should let any vessel with Filipino crew pass the strait.

If you know a Filipino, then they have family who work on the seas. The boats are owned by Greeks and staffed by Filipinos.
24
KardelSharpeyes Apr 2, 2026 +2
Whats the story behind why the boats are owned by Greeks? Never heard that before.

DynamoSnake Apr 3, 2026 +1
They don't have to pay local shipping taxes/duties, it's been a law since the 70's created by the junta, they register their boats in tax havens and then just fly the ships under Panama's flag. They hire non-eu citizens to get super c**** labour as well.

We'll see more of this in the coming weeks. Iran will start letting countries who denounce the US and pay homage to Iran pass safely. People seem to forget that Iran is still selling oil, and with the current prices they're likely making more money than they have in years.  Trump gave them the most insane geopolitical and economic boost imaginable, because he's that f****** stupid.

Necropolis750 Apr 2, 2026 +40
The Philippines isn't exactly "denouncing" the US at this point; they have a Mutual Protection Treaty after all. There are thousands of Iranian students in various educational levels in the Philippines, and both countries have had diplomatic relations since the 1960s. *(Edit: dangling participle)*

Realpolitik at work. End of day, the Philippines and Iran never had issue with each other.

Kranken_DeHogge Apr 2, 2026 +6
nobody likes it when I say it, but the majority of the world does not give a shit about regional politics in the region relating to Iran, and just wants a regular supply of oil back and cutting a deal with Iran is a lot simpler than assembling an international flotilla to reopen the strait by force or joining a US/Israeli led invasion of Iran
6
SomeDumbGamer Apr 2, 2026 +1
They don’t necessarily need to denounce the US. Just agree they won’t help the US in their war and that they are against it

Minguseyes Apr 2, 2026 +10
And Iran is requiring that contracts for cargoes be settled yuan and new insurance arrangements will arise to cover vessels that pay Iranian tolls. Its the end of the petrodollar and the bond markets will move.

I told my friends last night after his stupid address speech how f****** hysterical it would be if Iran suddenly notified all countries except the ones actively bombing them/supporting the bombers they're free to pass through on one condition: Any oil that they allow through cannot have a single drop of it enter those other countries or else they are also cut off immediately. US, Israel, UAE, etc. all being instantly cut off but allowing the rest of NATO and such to continue freely passing through to help lower their gas prices would be funny as f***.

Impossible_Song4571 Apr 2, 2026 -2
The US doesn’t really need oil from the Middle East.

Prices are rising locally in the USA due to a created shortage worldwide. It’s a global economy, so a shortage in Japan will increase the price in somewhere like South Africa, as the Japanese are now willing to pay more. This is an essential point that Trump missed in his speech last night. When he called on nations to buy their fossil fuel products from the USA, he was basically admitting that the local price would further increase. This is very basic macroeconomics.

_side_ Apr 2, 2026 +2
Yep, Trump including his Maga base are too stupid to get the idea of a global market. These companies that are doing "drill, baby drill" will sell their oil to the euro market if they make a higher bid.
2
Alone_Again_2 Apr 2, 2026
I would assume that Trump has the basic concept down as he has advisors that have explained it to him. He doesn’t care. It’s not the same thing.

Lmao. Please, I urge you, go look up an economics class and take it. Learn something.

KardelSharpeyes Apr 2, 2026 +1
Don't tell Americans to learn, thats very offensive to them.
1
Impossible_Song4571 Apr 3, 2026
I’ve taken plenty. Blocking the US from Middle East oil while allowing others to purchase isn’t necessarily going to produce the impact the author intended. The USA gets most of its oil internally, from Mexico and Canada. Global prices may rise, which impacts everyone.

Try to explain how this gave Iran a boost over what it could do a month ago.
2
xynith116 Apr 2, 2026
They could have done this all along but Trump came in and gave them the confidence and justification to do it.
0
PainterRude1394 Apr 2, 2026
Correct, they could have done this all along. Iran is weaker now than before the war; Iran did not get a "boost" like the commenter claimed.
0
xynith116 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Weaker militarily yes. Weaker geopolitically no.

3,000 years later people still pay tribute to Persia. I like it.

Maybe let poorer countries pass free and more wealthy countries pay. even better good wil
1
Easik Apr 2, 2026 +1
I think you are miscalculating the how stupid Trump can be, or his arrogance/husbris. I can just about guarantee that the US launches a massive strike on Iran once the market closes. If they blow up Kharg Island & Iran retaliates against UAE and Saudi Arabia, then it'll cripple the global economy and oil moving through the strait will be like 1 of 100 other problems.
1
PolloConTeriyaki Apr 2, 2026
It's not that hard to tell the USA to f*** off at this point. I do it like 10 times a day and I live here.

Small add-on information: The Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs clarified that there will be no toll fee.

Alone_Again_2 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Whose department of Foregn Affairs? Lots of players at the table.

Philippines.
2
Alone_Again_2 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Ok. Makes sense now. Interesting tactic by Iran. They are currently projecting soft power better than the American administration.

And now Trump will say he got another great gift from Iran
7
georgeyp Apr 2, 2026 +9
Well Trump said one thing right in his selfmastabatory speech, ships will be mostly safe while ours are operating nearby Best defense $ can buy
9
milkonyourmustache Apr 2, 2026 +4
Which will mean that they've agreed to trade oil in Yuan and not Dollars.
4
redpandafire Apr 2, 2026 +6
The most smooth brain part of it is the fall of the USD in trade. Americas linch pinch on the global economy. Iran isn’t going to let you pay their toll with US dollars. You have to buy foreign currency to pay them. That was the US Ponzi scheme until now.
6
S99B88 Apr 3, 2026 +1
The U.S. might have been doing all this, especially looking at their attempts in Venezuela, in order to stabilize their currency. Another failure.
1
Sieve-Boy Apr 2, 2026 +2
So, the toll was paid.
2
jraymcmurray Apr 3, 2026 +1
This makes me worry that the US is going to start bombing the strait if too many vessels start getting through without his approval.
1
S99B88 Apr 3, 2026 +1
I’m amused as this sort of reminds me of the U.S. putting hefty tariffs on some countries and going easy others.

All these ‘X was let through but Y wasn’t’ articles are glossing over the reality and making the credulous think Iran has total domination of the situation. Philippines is suffering as bad as any country from this war and this won’t make any difference. Their economy is in freefall. Every single country on earth, no matter their opinion on the war, would chew their arm off to go back to pre-war oil prices rather than be a chosen ‘favourite’ of a pariah state in a price shock. And for the same reason every country is using every diplomatic channel it has to pressure Iran to open the strait. And a huge number are also (rightly) pressuring US and Israel to end the attack.

ForeignExpression Apr 2, 2026 +10
The largest and most violent military machine to ever exist on Earth is bombing Iran every day and night along with the most unscrupulous air force in the world--and this is on top of facing the harshest sanctions regime for over half a century? Beyond what it is already facing, what possible "diplomatic pressure" can any country put on Iran if you consider what they are already up against? Iran is already facing the most intense military-diplomatic-economic pressure of any country on Earth, for decades now, and is not only still standing, but fighting back--and winning. I don't think Iran has to listen to anyone about anything right now. Most likely, we are going to have to listen to them soon.

Lmao glazing a terrorist regime. Holy shit a regular Iranian people wants their government to get out.

RelevantOldOnion Apr 2, 2026 +6
Lmao I love that we've fully reverted back to 2000s. "A sober assessment of the real situation? You must want the terrorist to win!" Next do the "don't you support the troops" line. It's was a classic!

Ngl, you had me till the end But one murderous, drid dealing pedophile who terrorizes the neighborhood beating up another murderous drug dealing pedophile terrorizing the neighborhood... Is actuabeating a huge f****** win for the world long term, especially as it seems to be making some oil addicts reexamine their life choices and take small reluctant steps towards getting clean. Now if only my mom had listened to me about marrying that first a****** a few years ago, I'd really prefer to watch this shitshow from a LOT farther away.
-3
Hope_Justice Apr 2, 2026 +2
Long term? What about the millions who will suffer in the meantime? It's not that cut and dry.
2
Ultra_Metal Apr 2, 2026 -8
The Islamic Republic is undermining its own strategy by letting ships through. This is proof that the regime cannot fully close the strait because the regime itself depends on it for its economic survival. Once again we see that the regime is a paper tiger and its threats are empty threats.
-8
Alone_Again_2 Apr 2, 2026 +4
Is it though? They get the Americans to leave them alone, likely lifting oil sanctions. They get an increase in revenue on crude in the short term, helping them rebuild the damage to their military. They’re keeping their nuclear stockpile. They didn’t exactly lose this war.
