Pirate movies

Posted by Double_Mission_6633

Hey so I'm a pretty big fan of pirate movies. I've watched all of Pirates of the Caribbean, Goonies, Cutthroat Island, Hook!, Treasure planet, Sinbad legend of the seven seas, Captain Philips, on and on and on and on. The point is, I LOVE PIRATE MOVIES. I just have one ask and it's that Id like you to recommend/make a list of a good or multiple good pirate movies that I could watch. Or something similar to V for Vendetta. Point being, I just want a pirate movie I haven't seen yet. I'll make a list of movies I have watched. . POTC 1 - 5 Hook! Cutthroat Island Treasure planet Goonies Sinbad Legend of the seven seas Captain Philips Water World The Bounty Harlock: Space Pirate

Not a pirate movie, but an age of sail movie set in the same period. Master and Commander. Fantastic movie.

If you like this movie, you might like the Horatio Hornblower series of movies.

Not a pirate movie and not a movie but I recently enjoyed the first season of The Terror.

Not a pirate movie but can I recommend ignoring the direct question in the post?

tattmhomas0 Mar 31, 2026 +1
I've heard amazing things about that movie and the way it shows how life on a huge boat like that would've been

ikickedagirl Apr 1, 2026 +1
It's a fantastic movie and one of the best sounding discs if you have a decent home theater.

Came here to say this. An overlooked treasure, can't recommend this movie enough.

The series Black Sails. It's somewhat historically accurate and one of the best TV series ever. Definitely the best pirate show.

MagicMST Mar 31, 2026 +7
Black sails are the standard. But watching any other pirate movie or show after will make you wish it was black sails.

HeyItsChase Apr 1, 2026 +2
Top 5 theme song too. You have to stomach a little extra horniness early in s1 but it gets unreal good.
2
preddevils6 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Black Sails followed by Muppet Treasure Island is my go to annually.

Lol mine too. "Cabin Fever??!!"

Meyou000 Mar 31, 2026 +6
Why is the top answer in r/movies usually a TV show?
6
makanimike Mar 31, 2026 +12
cause Black Sails is amazing!
12
Dustmopper Mar 31, 2026 +7
Plus Black Sails has the added bonus of having the most attractive cast ever assembled for television
7
WarriorPoetz Mar 31, 2026 +3
I second Black Sails...if your interest in Pirate movies is the way it sounds it is you need to watch Black Sails, it will soon top your list. The only other recs beyond the obvious are Master and Commander and The Bounty. Both sailing movies but not pirate movies.

Get some classic Errol Flynn watch Captain Blood (1936) also consider most any Zorro film for the swordplay🤔

I genuinely think that's why I'm seeing this post sitting on 0 I'm pretty sure people are just reading the title, thinking the same thing, and blindly down voting
2
BullAtTheGate Mar 31, 2026 +5
For classic Hollywood piratical adventure, the major Errol Flynn nautical swashbucklers ('Captain Blood', 'The Sea Hawk', 'Master of Ballantrae', 'Against All Flags' [though this one is dicey but I like the premise a lot]), and another great Old Hollywood pirate picture is 'The Black Swan' (1940) starring Tyrone Power. The French also just did absolutely fantastic adaptations of "The Count of Monte Cristo" [2024] and "The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan" and "The Three Musketeers: Milady". Also, "The Adventures of Tin-Tin" is underrated.

More of a modern take on pirates, but the Island with Michael Caine. I will say that it's been a very long time since I saw it, so I've no idea how well it holds up today. Just checked and it's been bashed on pretty much all review sites, but that climax has stuck with me for years.

Blackbeard's Ghost (1968). Classic Disney live action comedy movie about a pirate ghost only one guy can see. A lovely setting and great story, and really funny.
1
Jrswim Mar 31, 2026 +1
Hammer’s The Pirates of Blood River (1962). It’s light on the ocean-set pieces, but it’s a little appreciated Hammer studios film with a great look and the immortal Christopher Lee. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056350/

Kristy McNicol was definitely a crush back then.

The Pirates (2014) and the (not as good) sequel The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure (2022). If Master & Commander is allowed, then surely the trilogy on the greatest naval strategist that has ever sailed the seas on this planet is allowed, Yi Sun-sin! The Admiral Yi Trilogy: - The Admiral: Roaring Currents (2014) - Hansan: Rising Dragon (2022) - Noryang: Deadly Sea (2023)

Superb_Plum_627 Mar 31, 2026 +1
"Stardust" from 2007 had a memorable pirate segment. If you're ok with TV series responses, the excellent "Our Flag Means Death" lasted 2 seasons, 2022 to 2023. For something kid-friendly, there's Disney's "Peter Pan" from 1963.

Not a movie, but Black Sails. Great series.
1
ToxicNed Mar 31, 2026 +1
Sounds like you need to see The Pirate Movie. Came out in the early 80s and it's got all sorts of pirateness in it. It's even got a banger of a soundtrack, including the hit song "Pumpin' Blowin'".
1

Muppets Treasure Island.

Treasure Island (1950).  Still a classic gem.

Jungle cruise (2021) is a fun one that is pirate-ish.
1
Kathrynlena Apr 1, 2026 +1
Since a bunch of people mentioned Black Sails, I’ll mention Our Flag Means Death. It is based on a number of real pirates who actually existed. It is…not historically accurate, but it’s an absolute delight.

Have you watched the old live Sinbad and other stop motion movies: Golden Voyage of Sinbad, 7th Voyage Of Sinbad, Sinbad And The Eye Of The Tiger, Jason And The Argonauts. Some might be considered pirate adjacent, maybe more like corsairs or sea adventure. Swashbuckler - 1976 with Rober Shaw (from Jaws) The Light At The End Of The World with Kirk Douglas
1
Constant_Return Mar 31, 2026 +1
no movies off the top, but have you played Secret of Monkey Island?

Double_Mission_6633 Mar 31, 2026 +1
No I haven't, I'm assuming it's an old videogame?
1
WhiteLama Mar 31, 2026 +2
It is indeed but it’s been remade to look more modern. If you like puzzles along your pirates, check it out!
2
Constant_Return Mar 31, 2026 +1
yeah, ancient, but it holds up well. I think Pirates of the Caribbean copped a lot from it.
1
jtho78 Mar 31, 2026 +1
I’d play AC Black Flag instead

There are many One Piece films you can check out. One Piece: Red One Piece: Stampede Those are the two best of the lot.

Pirates of the Caribbean 1 is genuinely untouchable as a blockbuster but everything after that just got worse and worse... they really had no idea what made the first one work

MovieMike007 Mar 31, 2026 +1
There's Roman Polanski’s [Pirates](https://manapop.com/film/pirates-1986-review/). It's not a great movie, but it does showcase excellent production values.

Tangentially, if you only play one Assassin's Creed game, playing (and replaying) "AC4: Black Flag" is a series highlight- might be the best pirate game that exists. Remaster announced- release TBD
-1
Jack-Slinger Apr 1, 2026 +1
If you can find it, “Roman Polanski’s Pirates.” With Walter Matthau. It’s pirate gold.
