I copied the title from the article, but the PLANE'S WHEEL struck the vehicle while still being attached. It wasn't an errant loose wheel that went flying. Quite literally a plane struck a vehicle on approach.

The video went from normal to WTF without even showing the plane or the wheel. Poor driver never saw that coming. Glad he survived.

He’s just having a good day, sounds like he was singing along with the radio or a song stuck in his head, there’s a weird noise and before he can even wonder what it is beyond recognizing that it’s there the truck gets hit. So glad he survived and it sounds like the injuries were fairly minor. But it’s amazing how fast it happened.

Finally just had a chance to watch it, and man the aircraft noise right before he gets hit alone just makes me want to duck.

Only problem is there's no way the gear could hit the truck, then have the plane continue to a normal landing. The plane would have hit the bridge. Plus, you can see the main gear above the truck in a still from the video. Consensus is on the aviation subs that the plane hit a pole, and the pole hit the truck. Some have also claimed the wheel fell off but I haven't seen any photos to prove that claim.

You spelled consensus so incredibly wrong that you had me questioning how it was actually spelled lol

TheDrMonocle 6 days ago +2
Ha Oops. Spelling was always a weak point and im concerned it wasn't even caught by spell check
2
Leeciferous 6 days ago +2
Haha. You even had spellcheck confused, probably writing it off as a proper noun. ☺️

According to a KCBS, the plane's gear hit a light tower on the bridge. Debris from the light tower hit the truck.

The planes wheel [didn't do any of the damage to the truck](https://youtu.be/gQohIpj_usI). You can watch the video I linked with another view from a CCTV camera. The planes wing struck a light pole which nearly killed the driver by smashing through his windshield. Another light pole also caused pretty bad damage to the body of the aircraft.

https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/569924 Wait, the wheel was _attached to the plane_ at the time.

This made me laugh because I thought you were joking until I read the articles!

aaronhayes26 May 4, 2026 +31
That pilot is toast. This means plane was 14 feet off the pavement **outside** the airport.

TiresOnFire May 3, 2026 +2
I assume it was knocked off when then plane struck the light pole.

Warcraft_Fan May 4, 2026 +6
Nope, wheel still attached to the plane. The plane was too low at the time. Probably the same pilot who crashed in San Fransisco back in 2013, (the same plane crash with the 4 fake Korean-sounding names) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asiana_Airlines_Flight_214#cite_note-46

“Plane partially lands on top of truck” or “plane contacts truck on NJ turnpike during landing”…

Starfox-sf May 3, 2026 +19
Technically it was a touch and go.

A bake-off take-off

fxkatt May 3, 2026 +48
One in a million, but the piece should identify the plane... this came an inch or so from killing him.

It was N77066. The title is quite unclear --- the plane did not _lose_ the wheel, it was just a bit low on the approach.

aaronhayes26 May 4, 2026 +27
“A bit low” doing an awful lot of work here

RollMeBaby8ToTheBard 6 days ago +2
They had gusts of 30 mph at the time. There's some indication on the ADSB flight tracking that the plane was experiencing gusts based on the speeds on the slope. Doesn't mean that's what caused the plane to be so low, but it was a consideration on that day.

Just a tad too close to the highway, there nbd

Counting the cars on the New Jersey turnpike.

Lena-Luthor 6 days ago +1
counting or not counting turnpike traffic?

cinnasota May 3, 2026 +16
I do apologize for the title being unclear - didn't want to violate rules by editorializing it. Copied from the article, one of the few newer ones that indicated the plane struck a vehicle and NOT a light pole
16
DirkBabypunch May 4, 2026 +3
It wasn't both?

xIllustrious_Passion May 3, 2026 +5
The wheel was still attached..

darkmatterhunter May 3, 2026 +14
The article gives no info, but did the plane land successfully?
14
michoudi May 3, 2026 +27
Valid question, but I suspect we’d be reading news stories of that instead if it didn’t land successfully.

What a poorly written article.

Making sure that we know that the trailer was fine and "unscathed" before talking about the state of the driver is certainly a choice to make.

Have you ever seen Blazing Saddles? the scene with the railroad handcar going into the quicksand?
1
IAmTheM4ilm4n May 4, 2026 +4
Well - it's CBS Austin TX, so why are they reporting on an issue in Newark NJ? Aren't there any local news outlets? /s

Sure seems like we suck at airplanes lately.

What does any of that have to do with this situation? Literally none of those apply

ATC is not responsible for the altitude of the plane over the roadway.

\> A plane, United Airlines Flight 169, crashed into a bakery truck ~~while~~ which was traveling northbound on the New Jersey Turnpike No, the plane was not traveling northbound on the New Jersey Turnpike

GuelphEastEndGhetto May 3, 2026 +6
With the wheel still being attached, it’s amazing that the plane didn’t veer off and crash and instead landed safely.

Much better than flight 191. Pre high school me had to look up what decapitated meant.
