I would disagree that the change was until last year. The US greatly cut science funding that didn’t agree with Reagan or Bush’s agenda. The country was ahead in electric cars and solar tech, but pulled back funding because it would upset oil execs and has seceded the lead in those industries to China who has been innovating on American innovation. Trump is just a symptom of greater American failure.

Painful for the next 3-5 years but in the long term, the alternative is much worse.

Remember, the more Lutnick hates Canadian trade policy, the better/more effective it is. If we were the 51st state providing all our natural resources for free he'd be happy. We should seriously talk to Alexander Stubb about how Canada could join the EU with flexibility on the periphery while maintaining our own currency and immigration policy while taking advantage of free trade with europe. Stubb is an expert in this area. Flexible membership in the EU was his PhD thesis topic.
