Reminder that the FBI consistently warned about, investigated, stopped, and arrested violent or violently intentioned domestic right wing terrorists before Trump started purging staff.

Fun fact: The Obama administration scaled back it's efforts into tracking violent right wing extremism after DHS released a report saying that these groups were attempting to recruit more military veterans! So called liberals have always been spineless when it comes to cracking down on right wing extremism while conservatives love ramping it up. Hell the Greensboro massacre, where Klansmen and Neonazis shot and killed 5 communist demonstrators while an FBI agent was embedded in the the Neonazis ranks, happened under Jimmy Carter! And next to nothing was done to counter these people. Just look at the rise of the militia movement and the rise of the Bundy Clan, the growth of right wing street fighting movements, the growth of white supremacist gangs within police departments, and a host of other disgusting things. The US government has rarely thought it useful to go after right wing elements within the US (and abroad) but you bet your ass they'll repress, kill, slander, and surveil any left wing groups that may pop up.
-1
RainSurname 2 days ago +40
Just STFU with this bullshit. It was the Republicans lost their shit when that report came out, and it was the Republicans that fired that guy and nuked his entire department once they had a majority in Congress again. Republicans have been slashing funding for any and all investigations into right wing extremism ever since our intelligence agencies started saying right wing extremism was our greatest domestic threat, about 25 years ago.
40
Wizchine 2 days ago +15
Right. The bombing by Right-wing terrorists of the Oklahoma City Federal Building was 1995. Just seven years later In 2002, the FBI said the number one domestic terrorist threat in the US was from "Eco-terrorism." The GOP has always considered right-wing terrorists as their own, and at the very least has been hands-off and at the worst has quietly supported them. And now, here we are.
15
RainSurname 2 days ago +12
Of course they did. An oil tycoon had just stolen the election from an environmentalist. Weird how reports about how right wing extremism was actually our greatest terror threat finally started surfacing under a Democratic president, only for Republicans to step up their efforts to discredit and defund them.

You know the GOP has gone too far right when the Catholic Church is considered "woke"
334
NetZeroSun 2 days ago +173
Which is kinda inevitable. Considering if they actually listened to Jesus, they would consider him “woke”.
173
cynognathus 2 days ago +122
The former editor of Christianity Today [has related stories of congregants complaining to their pastors that the Sermon on the Mount was too woke:](https://www.npr.org/2023/08/05/1192374014/russell-moore-on-altar-call-for-evangelical-america) > pastors [told] me essentially the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount parenthetically in their preaching - turn the other cheek - to have someone come up after and to say, where did you get those liberal talking points? And what was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, I'm literally quoting Jesus Christ, the response would not be, I apologize. The response would be, yes, but that doesn't work anymore. That's weak. And when we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we're in a crisis.
122
starspangledcats 2 days ago +38
So... If they don't think Jesus's teachings are correct anymore, are they even Christian? It's one thing to misunderstand the teachings, but to deny them outright how could they call themselves Christian??
38
Regi0 2 days ago +24
They aren't, it's just an arbitrary title. It's a cultural rot more than anything.
24
jakreth 2 days ago +9
If they don't believe in Jesus teachings they have 2 options, to consider themselves as Jews and ignore the New Testament, or consider Jesus as just a prophet and, thus, convert to Islam. But the reality is that they are doing the same than a lot of Germans in the 1930s and 40s, replace Jesus with their political leader
9
NetZeroSun 2 days ago +24
That’s pretty scary that they don’t even understand what they are saying about Jesus’s own word.
24
Wizchine 2 days ago +6
Right - a lot of us think the pastors are leading their flock astray, but the dynamic more often is that the flock puts pressure on the pastor regarding what they want to hear and how they want to be preached to else the congregation walks and takes their tithes to a more politically palatable alternate. The tail wags the dog.

So it is with all authoritarian belief systems; the MAGA of tomorrow will believe the MAGA of yesterday was too soft, and that invariably manifests as ever-worsening extremism and a ever-downward spiral into hate and dehumanization of whatever flavor of "other" is on the menu that week.

It's chilling to see the parallel to our own Supreme Court: "It also provided a legal grounding for the Nazis, as the **German courts and cabinet quickly swept aside centuries of legal prohibition against extrajudicial killings to demonstrate their loyalty to the regime.** The Night of the Long Knives marked Hitler's absolute consolidation of judicial power and was a turning point in the establishment of Nazi Germany."

42
jetsetninjacat 2 days ago +7
The catholic church was always considered woke. One of the pushes against catholic immigration from places like germany, Ireland, Italy, and part of eastern Europe(that weren't orhthodox) was because they considered the catholic church too liberal back then.
7
AdeonWriter 2 days ago +6
Jesus was insanely progressive for his time. Love your neighbor? (which meant country neighbors, aka people who do not look like you?) that was u unheard of at the time. Feed the poor? A lower class than you? Why?
6
SVALTACT 2 days ago +8
For years, MAGA just preclaimed to be Catholic while completely ignoring any of the teachings of the religion. Anytime people would question them, they would hand wave some reason why its okay. Now the actual Pope is following those teachings and not allowing them to hand wave their way out of it, they go on the offensive.
8
OtakuAttacku 2 days ago +3
Just another flavor of "If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. The will reject democracy." They would proudly declaim their religion but if their religion doesn't actually align with their hate, they'd sooner create a schism than abandon their hate.

24

Because the essence of conservatism is fear and dislike of change, even though it is often inevitable and often undirected. So they are constantly angry and at war mentally with all change - even if the past they long for was an idealized myth that never really existed.
